Hi XDA,
I'm stuck with my HTC One X (non-branded, probably the international version?). I have read a lot of guides, but can't seem te find the right solution for my problem. I hope you can give me some advice how to fix my One X.
First of all; I rooted my phone, put Clockworkmod Recovery on it, made a complete backup with it and installed MaximusHD on it (and probably flashed the kernel, as mentioned on the How-to).
This was in september last year. Everything worked fine.
Yesterday I wanted to install the newest Cyanogen (cm-11-20140325-NIGHTLY-endeavoru), so I did a Factory Reset and wiped cache and dalvik through recovery. When trying to install I got an error message: set_metadata_recursive: some files could not load.
After that I tried some other roms. The latest Miui and Cyanogen cm-10.1.0-RC3-endeavoru installed succesfully, but all the signals were not working (no wifi, bluetooth, data, mobile operator).
It wasn't even possible to install back the OptimusHD rom (got the set_metadata_recursive error upon instal).
After searching this error message I read about updating ClockWorkMod to the latest version. Through fastboot I could finally update CWM, but this didn't solve the error.
It was possible for me to restore my own backup through CWM, but I got the same problem with all network/signals not working.
I tried to return to stock with RUU, by following a guide. Can't find the link again, but I first needed to relock and than install the folowing exe on my pc;
RUU_Endeavor_U_JB_45_S_HTC_Europe_3.14.401.31_R_Radio_5.1204.162.29_release_302015_signed
My device showed a HTC logo, but at the end of the installation the exe gave me an message that it couldn't update or something.
I also tried guide, but now my device is Relocked, so it won't work.

Can someone please help me with the next step to fix my phone? I think I need to unlock him first, but don't want to do anything untill I know if I do it right.
At first... Unlock bootloader again,....then always if you flash a Rom you have to flash the boot.img through fastboot which is inside each Rom.zip....second yea like you saw then you need a newer recovery...the best is to use this recovery http://downloads.sourceforge.net/pr...5bfb18530caaa2&ts=1395833912&use_mirror=cznic
(Sry for the long link )
There you can flash kitkat roms and sense roms so you don't have to change each time the recovery...all is working fine there...then again do the factory reset and flash the Rom you want...then boot into bootloader and flash the boot.img of the Rom you want to use...like I said the boot.img is inside the zip you flashed
Gesendet von meinem HTC One X mit Tapatalk
1. Unlock bootloader again
2. Flash latest twrp recovery
3. Wipe data, system, dalvik and cache from recovery
4. Extract boot.img from the rom zip file you want to flash on your pc
5. Flash a new ROM
6. Flash boot.img from fastboot
7. Reboot
Thanks for the quick answers!
Flashing the boot.img of the rom did the trick!:victory:

You should post your getvar all (deleting your imei number and S./N ) there is a post here but it is in german with the same problem which points to an incorrect recovery!

Being rooted or not has no bearing on OTA update.
Also, it seems that you are trying to tell the OP to root (not completely clear, with the 2 word post), when he clearly states he is already rooted.

By the way, the other guy had a different problem.
Has anyone got an idea of whats wrong?

Wrong stock recovery image.
OTA needs stock recovery 3.28.401.9 (389838.9) or 4.16.401.10 (448934.10)
but you installed 3.28.401.6 (389838.6)
Get the right recovery image, OTA will proceed.
I have one here - 3.28.401.9_recovery.img : http://sourceforge.net/projects/htconem8/files/Recovery/3.28.401.9_recovery.img/download

Okay thank you so far!
But now it comes up with a different error; It says "/system/xbin/nc has unexpected contents".
Let me tell you the whole story:
Some time ago i installed busybox, xposed and xprivacy (and luckypatcher) and used it normaly.
Then the Lollipop update came around and since it wasnt working (giving out the unexpected contend error) i thought it would be a good idea to just do a factory reset.
It didnt work afterwards either, so i went here to ask what the problem was, and i was told it was because of xposed.
However, xposed wasn't installed anymore (the app), and (i think) the newer versions installed it somewhere else, so installing and then uninstalling (the button in the app) it didnt delete the old directory. (Btw. in an last attempt i tried installing the stick recovery and got the wrong one apparently)
So yeah, i have no idea on how to fix this problem, but i would be okay with having to reset my phone.

That's expected
There are a few methods to solve your problem.
The easiest one is RUU it back to stock.
Follow this thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2735235
You need to relock bootloader and also make a backup of your internal storage files/pic/music or whatever you like to keep.
The RUU will update your device to the latest

You don't have S-Off - that's why you need to relock bootloader
That's the only difference - read the thread thoroughly.
First step - relock bootloader with command fastboot oem lock
then follow the step 3 onwards
Also note you need to use htc_fastboot.exe not the usual fastboot.exe
Anything you need to ask, you can ask there. I believe @EddyOS will gladly help you

I believe you do know this is M8 thread and not HTC Desire 820n
But .. this is what you can do to fix your problem ...
Check for OTA as usual, download OTA then select install later.
Connect your device to PC then copy the OTA zip from internal storage\download folder to PC
Open the OTA zip with 7-zip, you'll see firmware.zip. Open firmware.zip and extract out recovery.img <--- this is the one that you need.
Boot your device to bootloader
Fastboot flash this extracted recovery.img
Reboot, check for OTA again, this time select install now
Done

First ... remove the serial no. & imei no in your post as they are sensitive info.
You have 3 options :
1. Restore 4.16.401.10 TWRP backup - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=60147089&postcount=5104
It read as WWE 4.20.401.10 TWRP Backup but that's typo error .. it should read as WWE 4.19.401.10 TWRP Backup
or
2. Relock your bootloader and install 4.16.401.10 RUU.exe - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=56140330&postcount=1
(make backup of your internal storage important data as this will wipe everything)
or
3. Relock your bootloader and fastboot flash the 4.16.401.10 RUU.zip - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2735235
(make backup of your internal storage important data as this will wipe everything and also note you need htc_fastboot instead of normal fastboot)
thanks for your fast response.

You need to extract it with 7-zip and put those files in your backup folder not to ADB it nor fastboot it.

No need to relock bootloader.
Only when running RUU.exe or RUU.zip you need to relock bootloader when S-On.
Using a backup no need to relock bootloader. Just flash stock recovery then do OTA.
If that backup fails (as I'm not sure whether that's fully stock or not), I put up my own stock backup in my thread .. you can try that later if current one fails.
Restore successfully completed. Now, in order not to have problems with latest OTA , i have to restore stock recovery, right ?

Yes. OTA downloaded and I tried twice to install, but all it did was restart phone into bootloader.
After flashing stock recovery, I rebooted phone, ran OTA and update started.
After update completed, phone rebooted to white start screen with HTC logo and froze there.
I have read that this is probably because I ran OTA on rooted device.
So now i am stuck with no OS and hope these files will help.
Thanks ckpv5 for help and link.

now to flash custom TWRP recovery and re-root.
if I may ask, what is the safest method to run OTA in future?
i dont really know. Anyway , how about your free space. i dont know what happened because now i have less that 1 GB free space.

The best solution for me if I ever have this problem .. I will format data (not wipe data) in TWRP before I restore the backup (of course need to backup internal storage data somewhere else first)
Done . Now i have free space. many thanks !!

i need you help guys , i'm just trying to power up my phone normal and never go back to this bootloader screen
You flashed a rom that wouldn't work on Sprint device by default. You need proper kernel to run with this ROM but I will not go further on this.
Your best bet now is install RUU meant for Sprint.
Everything that you need is here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2729173

Thnks for your reply sir , i was trying to do this , but now my phone cannot connect to the RUU installation wizard , How can i do it
I'm not on PC .. unable to write proper guide.
The easier one for you is download 0P6BIMG_Sprint_HTC_One_M8_4.25.651.14_RUU.zip
then rename it to 0P6BIMG.zip and put it on your microSD, not in any folder.
On bootloader, press power once to go to hboot. Once on hboot it will scan the file and ask whether to update. Volume up to update and let it do its stuff. Once completed, reboot.
After setup complete, delete that zip file.
Before that, if you select to go to recovery, do you still have TWRP ?
If yes, boot to recovery and make backup of your internal storage as the above procedure will wipe everything on your device except microSD.
Or you can install any ROM with sprint support (like the one I'm using now) then you don't need RUU.
After completed and ROM is booting, you can install any other ROM with Sprint support.
But it's best for you to update your firmware to Marshmallow first.

the last part that i didn't get , how can i update my firmware to marshmallow first ?
ckpv5 , got the ruu file and rename it and copy it to sdcard , but when i go into HBoot it says
Image Update Fail
Parsing ...
Device Halted due to large Image Update Fail
press power to rebbot .
You downloaded the one that I mentioned ? I made a mistake there (wrong file copied).
You need the one that have 4.25.654.14 in it, sorry.
When I said update to Marshmallow first, that's after you fixed current problem.
After you successfully installed 4.25.654.14, then do OTA to 4.25.654.18 then later to 6.20.654.3
(That's why I don't like to help when not on PC.. sometime copy wrong filename)

Hello guys,
I have a big probleme. I decided to change mobile, i put my as original since it's easy to sell. I was on leedroid rom with twrp on custom recovery.
So on twrp i flash my original Rom (i ever done it one time so i know it's the good one). Everithing work great, the phone restart. I want to improve the Rom step by step, and i download kitkat 4.4.4, when it's done the phone restart, load kitkat and restart. That the begenning of probleme, it reboot i here the small song, then i stay lock one start screen (Htc-Powered by android), very strange, the screen give some vibration as if it work but nothing move, locking on this screen ........ No probleme, i restart on recovery and i start on recovery factory, the phone boot, as if it load the recovery factory version, it boot again, but nothing more, locked on white screen with Htc powered by android, and the small thong.
Here's, i don't have phone since 2 days. If you have a solution to restart this M8, please help me.
Thanks in advance for your answer.
Most probably because of a very low android version installed on a high firmware version.
Post fastboot getvar all result (without serial & imei no.) to see what actually that you need.
Thanks for you answer, how can i get fastboot getvard ?
Never expect this kind of question from a "member" of XDA.
Anyway ... connect your device to pc after you put it on bootloader/fastboot mode
Open a command prompt from your adb/fastboot folder then type
fastboot getvar all
Sorry, i have done that long time ago.

That's your problem .. you have Marshmallow 6.12.163.4 firmware but you restored a very old version and it get stuck due to too high firmware.
I don't see anywhere a backup or RUU for 6.12.163.4 around ... you need to find it.
I'll see whether I can find a lower version than make a good collection in my backup thread
Edit : you should have already make your own backup since our last conversation here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=57254494&postcount=3175 .... maybe you can contact him again.
Edit 2 : You can wait and I'll upload 6.12.163.4 backup to my backup thread (link in my signature) either tomorrow or Sunday
Arf, ok, so i will try to find this one. I hope i will get it.
I'm just asking, how can i flash this version (if i find it), since i can't access to my phone, i never do this before ?
I found this for you ....
ROM 4.19.163.2 (+ radio & stock recovery, màd par Migascalp, flash via TWRP*)
Install TWRP then install it as same as you install custom ROM then do OTA to 6.12.163.4
Source : https://monhtcone.com/2015/03/05/boite-a-outils-pour-le-htc-one-m8/comment-page-1/
Thanks to @migascalp
Thanks a lot
The problem is that before i use Twrp to flash my custom rom, and now i only have the original recovery

Reinstall TWRP - https://dl.twrp.me/m8/
Download twrp-3.0.2-0-m8.img and place it in your adb/fastboot folder
connect your device to pc after you put it on bootloader/fastboot mode
Open a command prompt from your adb/fastboot folder then type
fastboot flash recovery twrp-3.0.2-0-m8.img
then you get TWRP recovery installed then proceed the rest
gotta go now ... good luck
Thanks a lot Kuala for your help. I download everythings then i do it. I give you news when it's done.
Thanks again mate
Thanks a lot mate for your help.
TWRP installed
15 minutes to go for Rom ....
Working great Kuala. Amazing, thanks for advices and help
Arf, it's not working perfectly, i can't install 6.0. It's loading, decompress, but when M8 reboot to install it make error.....
Does some one have idea ?
Thanks for answer.
Why error ? Did you root it ? If you root it, you'll get error.
Here is another way for you :
Install latest TWRP
Restore 6.12.163.4 non-rooted backup
Install 6.12.163.4 stock recovery
Done
All files needed and how-to, read my thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/help/tutorial-how-to-stock-stock-twrp-t3086860
Any further question, ask in my thread
I have an HTC One M8 (International) and I don't remember how, since this happened long ago, but while flashing some ROM I somehow switched my phone back to S-On while the bootloader stayed 'Unlocked' but it showed the 'Tampered' sign.
After an year, my new phone isn't working and I needed to get my old phone back so I took it out and decided to wipe everything because I didn't care about the data inside it and I just wanted all the storage space. Unwittingly I checked every box in the 'Advanced' section of the factory reset menu, including the 'System' checkbox.
Now my phone has no OS, it has an unlocked bootloader with the latest TWRP installed (not completely sure about the latest part) but it shows 'Tampered' below the unlocked text and I've got 'S-On'. I had the Viper ROM on it before if that matters. It wont boot past the HTC screen which has the red text below it that tells us that the version of HTC is for developers.
I really need some help here, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Download a ROM on your PC and transfer it to an SD card, then flash it in recovery. Wiping everything in recovery doesn't wipe recovery, so you should still have TWRP on your phone.
To get there after you've inserted the SD card with the ROM to flash, power up your phone by holding power+vol down. That will boot you to bootloader. Use the vol keys to navigate to hboot and the power button to select it, and there will be an option to boot to recovery. Navigate to that, then flash the ROM.

I tried that, but it doesn't flash the ROM. Instead it starts flashing and then restarts back into TWRP midway. I tried flashing superuser the same way but to no avail.
You may have outdated firmware and outdated TWRP version. Most of current ROM won't get installed on outdated TWRP.

Are you sure it was ever s-off? S-off isn't need to flash ROMs, root, or a great many other things.
The only way you could have gotten s-off is with the sunshine app ($25); unless you did s-off with firewater before that method was disabled in Dec 2014.

There is rarely ever a reason to go into the Advanced section. But if you do, its called "Advanced" for a reason. You shouldn't be wiping any partitions on this device without understanding what it means, and what the results will be.

If you haven't installed a new TWRP version in a year, there is no way its the "latest".
There is also no reason to guess at this. It says the TWRP version number right on the main screen of TWRP. You're always better of giving the specific number, instead of just saying latest. Folks on here often post they have the "latest" TWRP. But once prompted for the actual version number, I often find its something very old, often 2 years old!

Jesus. 1.54.651.8 OS? That phone has never been updated since forever.
Go to this thread for instructions and links to update your device.
You want the ones that aren't "Harman"
EDIT: You are S-Off, so keep that in mind (security: off from your getvar)
Feel free to send me a PM if you need further instructions.
