Hi,
I bought a locked Samsung S3 (At&t). It is rooted with cyanogenMod 10.2 Android 4.3.1. All i was trying to do is unlock it so i can use it with other carrier. So i bought the unlock codes for 30 bucks but later i found out that the unlock codes only work with Stock rom. I am not an expert at this Root, Custom Rom...stuff, but not idiot either i can follow step by step directions if anyone knows how to make this work. I would like to use the custom rom though, so do i have to recover in stock rom, unlock the phone using the code and than install the custom rom again?
Plz help

Yes, that is what you will need to do. As you can only enter an unlock code on a stock ROM (or one of the numerous custom ROM based on the stock one), you won't be able to make it work on CyanogenMod or any AOSP derivatives. You will have to revert back to stock, then (if you want to try a cutom ROM) install another custom ROM of your choice, be it CM or anything else.
Though if you currently have CM installed in your device, you most certainly already have a custom recovery (TWRP, CWM, PhilZ Touch...), which make it even easier for you to flash ROMs at your will -- the step of installing a custom recovery is already done. So browse the AT&T SIII Android Development forum, choose a stock-based ROM, install it -- pay close attention to the installation instructions in the ROM's thread --, unlock your phone; then repeat those steps to install another ROM if you want to.

Could you please direct me to how to unroot? I am able to go into the recovery mode but not really sure how to go on from there. I appreciate the help.

Before you flash a stock ROM, you would need to check what bootloader your phone is currently on as flashing the wrong one could cause your phone to brick or become unusable. Custom ROMs like the CM you currently have do not have their own bootloaders but rely on manufacturer's bootloader to run. The bootloader, quite simply, is a small application that loads the operating system and all other applications & systems required for the phone to run once it is powered on. Therefore, with a faulty bootloader, your phone can not gather all the resources required to power on successfully. If your phone is running on the 4.3 bootloader which would be the case if it was on 4.3 before the update to a custom ROM, then you would have to return to stock Android 4.3 which is the latest OS available for the AT&T GS3. However, if it has an older bootloader, then you can flash Android 4.1.1 via Odin.
There are different sets of instructions for either system so I would suggest you check your phone's settings and advise the OS parameters you can see there so we can steer you in the correct direction.

Did the phone originally have 4.3? or did it have an older version before you installed CM 10.2. This would determine how you would go about it.
Also is there a custom recovery like clockworkmod installed?

2) if it does prevent OTA, can anyone link me to the latest & best custom recovery anyway. I know i can simply use the "fastboot boot <recoveryimagefilename>" command to boot into custom recovery without flashing it
3) if i were to flash it anyway, can i manually flash OTA's then. According to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2380113 you need stock recovery to flash OTA's, then what's the point of custom recovery (other than nandroid backups) if ya can't flash stock OTA's

1) yes
2) I would use this http://www.wugfresh.com makes every thing easy as pie. I would recommend twrp (team win recovery project) wugs fresh will automatically download, and install the latest version for you
3) no you can't flash "factory images" but if you want you can run flash-all.bat with the SDK tools thru ADB, but that would replace your recovery with the sock one, and return you tablet to pure stock, with whatever android version you downloaded from Google. But the good folks here on xda will create an update .zip you can flash thru your custom recovery, before the ota is even available. As far as why have a custom recovery in the first place, you can flash custom software (ROM's, kernels, mods) that will have more features than all the ota's will have in 1000 years. :victory: Examples, Multi window, overclocking, undervolting, change the color of everything (lol everything) shortcuts every where, (EVERYWHERE, without getting in the way, I know, how, but they do it, lol) battery meter mods, themes,(change the whole GUI), expanded desktop, native screen recording, the list goes on on and on...
Anyway, no don't accept an ota while your running a custom recovery, it will probably soft brick you, but the features you will gain from custom ROM's/ kernel's will vastly outweigh the features you will ever receive from an ota (and almost all custom ROM's will be based off of the latest android version anyway, so all the latest android features will be baked in) so ya IMO you should go for it. :highfive:
your 2) does not answer the question. Im not asking how to root, i've already done that
3) is wrong again. After removing a pinyin keyboard on 4.3 the 4.4 OTA wouldn't work. so YES i COULD flash a factory image. But then again. That answer is again besides the question. I'm not asking to flash a factory image. I'm asking if using a custom recovery would make it possible to still manually flash OTA's. I'm not gonna flash custom rom on the nexus either. I love the stock rom, smooth and fast but that's again besides the question

2)I believe you asked what the "latest and best" custom recovery would be. (matter of opinion) I was simply trying to simplify your quest, by linking you to a toolkit that will do it for you.( wugfresh will install the latest version of twrp.. It will do much more than root your nexus... if you explore it) the check box under root. ( I personally don't use it, I prefer to do things the hard way)
3) I agree the stock ROM is "super smooth, and fast", (stable) that's why I personally use the xposed framework, with the stock ROM (updated to 4.4 krt16s, with the elementalX kernel 2.2)... And yes rooting, AND removing a system app (pinyin keyboard), will make an ota fail... Don't think you asked that... I don't know about flashing an ota thru a custom recovery, never done it, but it definitely sounds like a sketch idea to me. IDK why you wouldn't just flash an update.zip. ( pretty much the same as an ota...) If you are running a custom recovery... And if you really want that stock ota... flash-all.bat is your best friend...

Hi im new on this forum and I would like to have some tricks and tips cause I just rooted my phone yesterday and it seems more difficult to find information for my phone I have a galaxy s3 on 4.3 sgh i747m with Rogers .... Is it me or there is just a lot more stuff made for the i9300... I have tried to find ROM'S and tricks to put CWM recovery but it's harder to find information !!
to put CWM recovery I saw a lot of stuff saying download rom manager and install CWM recovery with this app but they offer me a version of CWM recovery for a galaxy s3 (metro cps) they doesn't say if it's made for a sgh i747 so im really scared to do something wrong if I install this version of CWM recovery ..
Could some one help me maybe with website limks or a guide for beginers noob like me or this forum seem's to be really good with some people with knowledge
Before my galaxy s3 I had a Jailbreak Iphone 3gs a year ago but Rooting an Android and putting stuff on it is not really the same thing it's far away from it!
And does it matter if put some stuff on my phone made for at&t sprint etc.... even if those are sgh i747
Hey,
I am running CM11 d2att and CWM d2att on my i747m and it works perfectly. It has been so long since I did it that I can't remember the exact steps that I took, so I would do some more research. Everything I needed to know was on these forums somewhere.
I believe the rough steps I took were:
- Root
- Install CWM (d2att)
- Update bootloaders (i747m)
- Flash d2att rom
But I can't remember exactly, so do some research before you go ahead!
You can install pretty much whatever you'll find in these forums except for bootloaders and modems.
There are specific bootloaders/modem for the i747m vs. i747.
The rest, unless explicitely specified otherwise, is 100% compatible between i747 and i747m.
As for your recovery script, I would suggest installing TWRP instead of CWM.
TWRP is more user friendly for people that are new to Android and both are usually supported.
For this, go to the Play Store, download and install the "Goo manager" application.
Once installed, open up the app, hit the menu button and select the "install recovery script" option.
It will automatically select/download/install the correct recovery for your phone and ask you to confirm before doing so.

I recommend not updating your phone to any stock 4.3 ROM. A stock 4.3 ROM will install a 4.3 bootloader which cannot be downgraded and may cause problems when trying to root or get back to stock.
Some newer ROMs require an updated bootloader in order to install and boot. I am running a 4.1.2 bootloader on my i747m and don't have any problems installing 4.4.2 ROMs.
Rooting gives you access to the system files and does not unlock you bootloader.
For installing custom ROMs, I use Philz Touch which is based on CWM. I have tried TWRP and I was getting errors when flashing custom ROMs. I was able to flash the same ROM using Philz Touch without a problem. TWRP is more user friendly but doesn't work as well for me.

Your post says youhave 4.3 on your phone. Is it a stock 4.3 ROM?
d2att (i747) is the AT&T version of the s3. Canada has the i747m.
The bootloader does not need to be unlocked in order to install a custom recovery or to root like Motorola phones.
The bootloader is software that an OS works with in order to function as a phone.

yes its the 4.3 jelly bean stock rom
but can I put any custom rom for my model the i747 or 747m ? The carrier doesn't have any importance ?
Any warranty left on your phone? Installing a custom ROM will void your warranty.
If you want to install a custom rom, copy the ROM you want to the internal or external SD card, install Philz Touch recovery, boot into recovery, wipe cache, Dalvik, install the ROM, and reboot.
You can install any ROM for the d2att as long as the ROM supports the phone's bootloader.
How I know which bootloader I got? If I have the 4.3 jelly bean I have a 4.3 boot loader?

I know there are a few threads regarding this issue but I can't seem to find a definitive answer.
I am currently running stock 4.3 jellybean (rooted). My phone hasn't received the 4.4 KitKat update yet, so I wanted to install CM11 in order to get KitKat on my s3. However, I heard CM11 can be buggy on the s3, so in case things go south, I want to be able to revert back to the stock 4.3 rom. Some people have said that you can easily flash the stock ROM via ODIN. However, others said that downgrading from 4.4.2 to 4.3 will hard brick the device since installing CM11 updates the boot loader. So downgrading to 4.3 stock with a 4.4.2 boot loader will cause a hard brick according to other threads I've seen. My question is, how can I downgrade from CM11 to stock 4.3 safely without bricking? Thanks in advance.
If you are sure you are using a Canadian version of the i747m, you can flash back to stock in Odin using a stock 4.3 ROM for the phone's original carrier (Bell, Rogers, Telus).

Yes I got the phone from Rogers, it's most definitely i747M. But do I have to worry about any issues with the bootloader? I'm assuming installing CM11 will install the 4.4.2 bootloader, so if I choose to downgrade to the stock 4.3 rom, will it cause any issues seeing as I'm running a 4.3 rom with a 4.4.2 bootloader? I just want to make sure because I heard it can cause some serious problems if the bootloader is newer than the rom.

I have never come across a custom ROM that touches the bootloader. A compatible bootloader has to be loaded on the phone before you attempt to install the custom ROM. Supported bootloaders can be found in the ROM's updater script.
I assume your phone has no warranty since you rooted it on stock 4.3. Did you root it by installing a pre-rooted ROM?
You could copy a ROM to your external SD card, install Philz Touch via Odin, reboot directly to recovery, create a nandroid backup, wipe cache, Dalvik, data, and install your KK ROM.

Okay, I was just making sure because I know OTA updates can change the bootloader, so I just wanted to make sure the custom roms don't do that. As for the custom recovery, are you recommending Philz Touch over CWM and TWRP? Do you know which custom recovery is installed from the CM installer?

Oh and one more question, my phone was originally carrier locked to Rogers and unrooted on 4.3 jelly bean. I brought it in to a cell store for them to carrier unlock it for me, but they used a rooting method to unlock it (because SuperSU was installed on it when I brought it back). They didn't unlock it with a code, so I'm guessing they used something like Samsung Tool or z3x shell. If I install CM11, will I lose the unlock, considering it's more of a "soft unlock", or is the unlock permanent regardless of how many roms I flash? Thanks for your help!

Philz is based on the latest release of CWM and I prefer CWM over TWRP because I had problems flashing ROMs. Once I switched to Philz/CWM, no more problems.

The unlock should be permanent. I unlocked it using the free method when on 4.1.1 and no ROM has ever caused it to re-lock. Reflashing a completely stock ROM, including the bootloader, did not relock the phone.
Please remember that flashing and changing ROMs will always carry a risk of soft bricking or hard bricking your phone. Make sure you read all of the guides and be prepared for disaster.

Two options:
1) flash back to stock 4.1.2, root and install cwm via freegee
2) install gpro_recovery.apk from forums, flash recovery from there, update that dinosaur (I think it's 6.0.4.4) to something newer (Philz, which is slightly newer or latest TWRP available) and profit.
Thanks again shadi
But u mean to flash the gpro recovery using odin? (The old familiar way)?
Odin is for Samsung devices Which option confuses you?
I cant access the recovery mode so how can i flash the gprorecovery?
You download an APK called GPRO recovery, install it, and flash from there. After that, update recovery and enjoy.
To be honest with you, better option is to return back to Jellybean and start from there, possible less problems (wakelocks, deep sleep, battery drains etc.)
I did what ShadySquirrel said myself, It took a lot of looking and reading. Used the LG flash tool to go back to 4.1.2 then used I believe easy universal root where you connect the phone to the pc with charge only chosen under pc connections, then on the pc you run the bat file and it tells you what to do and roots the phone, checked root with a root checker app then used FreeGee to install cwm and twrp. So far so good. Good luck like I said it took a lot of reading.
Many thanks again for both of you...

shady i have an inquiry, do you recommend to go back to jellybean and then update the phone through the air? OTA update? or you mean to go back to JB and then start rooting and installing recovery?
as i understood from what you recommend is to go back to JB and then root and install recovery, but you mean to stay on JB??? and if not what i will get from returning back to JB, root and install recovery as im going to upgrade again to KK?

Depending on what you plan to do.
If you want to use any non-stock based ROM out there (CM, Bliss, Slim etc.) it's better to return back to stock 4.1.2, root, flash recovery (Freegee + new TWRP after that) and start flashing. This way, you have great chances to avoid random wakelocks, problems etc. , which are typical for moving from stock 4.4.2 to any other ROM.
If you want to keep using stock ROM, well, you're in a problem because freegee doesn't support Kitkat, so you'll have to root, install GPRO_recovery.apk, flash it's recovery and then try flashing recovery from freegee or try flashing new twrp. If you want to stay on stock 4.1.2, then it's the previous cycle (root, Freegee, twrp update) and that's it.
If you decide to use stock roms, DON'T install OTAs, you'll get a soft brick because of custom recovery.

Depending on what you plan to do.

many many thanks for this explanation, but i decided to stay in stock KK, so i maybe in a little problem, so i will stay in KK and root my device without installing the recovery, then i will be OK
Many thanks again,,,,
How do I root my tmobile m8 running Android 5.0.1 and bootloader unlock. Also custom recovery so I can flash a 6.0 ROM
You're saying your bootloader is already unlocked? It may already have custom recovery installed. Just pick "recovery" from bootloader, and see if TWRP boots.
If not, just flash TWRP with fastboot.
You don't need to root, if you are going to go and flash a custom ROM anyway. Depending on the ROM, it may already be rooted. Otherwise, flash the appropriate SuperSU version.

I know you got it sorted out. But its best to post your solution, for the benefit of others that my have the same issue/questions and be looking at the thread in the future:
For a completely stock device on Lollipop, the suggested sequence to install a custom ROM:
1) Unlock the bootloader by HTCDev.com (the process is rather self-explanatory if you follow the instructions on the website)
2) Install custom recovery TWRP 2.8.7.0 by fastboot
3) Flash the MM ROM of your choice. Most will work with Lollipop firmware (meaning, if your phone was on LP when you were stock) but check the thread of the particular desired ROM to be sure.
4) Most ROMs are pre-rooted. But again, check the desired ROM thread to confirm (as root on MM is a little different from past builds).
