I know that how much we can do with any given phone is really up in the air at this point...
However, I am wondering how many people are still interested in this device and will still give it a shot even it requires some fiddling with the boot loaders and what not.
I completely understand if no one wants to dev here but, as someone who really doesn't have the option of nexus-y goodness, I figure it isn't beyond reason that some people will at least try to tinker with this one.
I'm definitely interested and will probably be here in january. Hopefully the bootloader will be unlocked by then. If not, I will try to figure out how to do that.

Awesome.
I won't be able to upgrade till December but, it's not like I have a lot of places to go really in terms of options.
Very encouraging, gentlemen. Would this potential development be compatible with the F180 model? I am currently living in South Korea, waiting for my current phone contract to expire next month and (finally) purchase my first Android device.

Yeah, I will do stuff for all variants if I get one. I can probably make a flashable zip that can detect which device you are on and throw the right files in corresponding to your device.

Well sir, I am about 96% convinced that I will be getting this phone (the F180) and would be more than happy to provide any sort of assistance/ file dumps as requested/ required.
Pretty sure a few roms have that for the s1 variants.

I was going to get a Nexus 4, but alas since it's gsm only looks like I'll be getting the Optimus G. It'll be a nice upgrade from my heroc. With luck I'll get it on the 11th. First mission will be the bootloader.
I currently maintain cm10 for the heroc, so I have a bit of experience around the block.
Once the bootloader is unlocked, this will basically be the nexus for us Sprint users. Nearly identical specs will make development a breeze.

It will pretty much be the Nexus for me assuming unlocked bootloaders.

I probably will as long as the boot loader is unlocked by Jan, which is when my contract ends, or if the nexus boot loader works.

Let me start off with saying sorry if this is the wrong thread/forum to locate this:
I have an upgrade with AT&T that I can use and I am highly interested in the Galaxy S3, however I am more cautious than my last upgrade because I previously upgraded to the Nokia Lumia 900 and just a few weeks later, they released no windows 8 upgrade, etc for it. I am worried that if I plan to get the S3 somehow I will miss out on the next S4. I guess what I am asking is should I wait or go ahead with the upgrade. I am interested in it now, because I can get it for 149.99 and get a free $50 dollar credit to the google play store. Any advice would be great, thanks!
The S3 is a great phone with really good dev support. The S4 hasn't even been announced yet so that means it's going to be over 6 months before the US ever sees it. If I were you I would get the S3 now. At $150 +$50 play store credit that is a pretty decent deal.
We just got 4.1 jellybean and 4.2 (I think) is looking promising, hopefully. I mean, we still have approximately a year left of support from Sammy.

If any kind of SIV is releasing in April, it would be the international version, and even that is highly unlikely.
An announcement of the international version might come in April, but I highly doubt that the U.S variants will be in stores before June at the earliest.

Really??? Then again, I've just been reading reviews and haven't actually seen someone with an one. But from what I see, the build quality looks excellent... only downside is the inability to change the battery/back cover at ease. Not sure about the battery life though :S

If that's the case, I will most definitely not be purchasing it. I can only imagine the update delays when there are multiple carrier variants floating around. In fact, I think I'm done with carrier-branded phones altogether. As noted by another user, the GS3 is not going to become obsolete any time soon, so I may just hold out until the next Nexus, in hopes that it'll come with LTE. ::fingers crossed::
I think I am going to get it, best chance is now!

No hope of boot loader unlock on that firmware currently. Only option is send to sonic for s-off. Or change carriers to att or someone else and get a one from them, I returned my Verizon one and did just that and couldn't be happier.

Verizon has blocked the bootloader from being unlocked via HTCDev. Currently, the ONLY way to unlock is to send it to Sonic. Visit this thread:

So you are against sending it out to get s-off'd by sonic? That's a permanent root for you...
If not, do some research before you purchase a new $600 device. If root is a MUST for you please take time to make sure a new phone will fit your needs in this matter before you waste their time with return of an otherwise GOOD product.
I apologize if this sounds snarky.... that's not my intent.

If you kept your old phone, reactivate that one, send your One to Sonic to get S-Off (for a very reasonable fee... the java cards are expensive!), then when you get it back, reactivate the one. Done and done!

more development will be on the htc one maxx than this phone (unfortunately HTC kinda did again - what they did with the HTC Inc4g I just hope this community actually stays and doesn't leave), not saying that it will get S-OFF faster, but it will have more of a community than us, which = more bounty money = more developers working on exploits. Personally I can't use a phone bigger than 5' large. Again, this is just an opinion from word around the water coolers.

Quick and dirty version of how.
Visit http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2427960 for information.
Go to http://htc.s26tech.com/ to purchase the S-OFF option for the One, send it off and wait for it to come back.
Quick question that I'm thinking about that you should think about. If HTC goes out of business and fails as a company soon, will that mean we won't potentially get future software updates? Or will they all just be rolled out by Verizon as stock software like the Google Play edition HTC One?

there is a lot of media talk that HTC is failing. But I don't think they are in any danger of going out of business anytime soon. If anything, they'll get bought out by someone.
As much as I don't think that'll happen, I'm fond of the idea of a straight Google experience on this device without having to buy the GPE edition.
Sent from my HTC6500LVW using Tapatalk 4
I'm guessing each one of us already has an experience that speaks to this question (which is a pretty good one, by the way). OK, Motorola...Samsung...LG...none of them have failed yet, but here's my version: bought the Droid 3 in October 2011, and two short months later Motorola announced the D4. WHICH (magically) had just the minimum hardware to get the ICS update. Of course the D3 fell under the bar.
So I've suffered the shame and frustration of running Gingerbread on a phone for two years (fwiw, there *have* been ICS and JB ROMs, but all a bit wonky one way or the other, e.g., camera function), while the world of Android has raced by me. To owners like me -- less than 6 months after buying the beast -- all manufacturer support for the device went stone cold.
To be honest, I don't have any nuggets of wisdom to offer here. The two rays of hope if HTC fails are (1) we get root/unlocked bootloader and the devs save us, or (2) we get the 4.3 update as promised and find peace, happiness, and contentment one version short of Kitkat (which, by the way, doesn't look yet like the kind of leap we've seen from one version to the next -- many of the expected improvements are under the hood). I do not think that Google or Verizon will do any work whatsoever on the phone if HTC drops support for it.
