Can anyone direct me into the thread that shows step by step how to add a custom recovery , root and install a custom rom on the stock Android 4.4.2 rom..I haven't installed roms on xda in a while ...so im kinda out of the loop and confused on what I need to do ..thanks
Odin your preferred recovery, reboot to recovery, wipe, and flash your custom ROM.. That's it.. And you can make a nandroid before if you choose to as well.. Your thread says rooting but you talk about installing a custom ROM, for rooting I was gonna suggest cf-auto root or saferoot, but its not needed

after rooting, what is a good recovery to install and good rom that gives good battery life to install? Thanks.
I'm using clockworkmod for a custom recovery, and Insane Kitkat as my rom. Battery life is very good.

...but im really confused by it all.
Im not new to rooting or flashing roms etc but im confused with all the different builds and my efs folder and what not.
I came from having a moto atrix and a htc desire before that.
My phone is currently on stock XXDME6 with baseband DMF1 and im in the UK.
Can someone point me in the right direction to be able to root, install TWRP recovery and flash miui v5 please?
Any help would be much appreciated.

For TWRP: HERE
MIUI thread: HERE
Once TWRP installed make sure to make a Nandroid Backup and check EFS partition.
Then you will be able to flash MIUI safely.
The easiest way to root is chainfires autoroot but that won't give you custom recovery you will have to flash separately. Dr ketan has published a gude that is stickied, you can't go wrong if you follow that and dr ketan is always helpful and friendly if your confused

Thanks for the replies.
If i root using CF auto root, how do i flash the twrp recovery?
Is it only roms built using a stock base that i have to worry about the build number then?
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda app-developers app
You can flash any build number I think the issue is with the latest modem which once flashed can't be downgraded . There are a few threads on it. If you want to use auto root you can use something like rom toolbox pro or I used mobile odin to flash a custom recovery. Personally I recommend phils touch recovery. I think he has an all in one root and custom recovery package that you just flash with odin

If I remember correctly you can downgrade to an earlier rom as long as you reflash your modem

Hi Folk,
I have a N7105 and I'm quite familiar with rooting and flashing roms...
atm I'm on 4.1.2 stock rom, due to a repair case, I'm still on stock because I wanted to see what Samsung
has to offer in the new 4.3. But there is no Air command etc, and I read a lot about problems with Knox and the new boot loader..
Now I want to flash a custom rom (most likely 4.1) and there is my question:
Do I have to root the stock first or is it enough to just flash a custom recovery trough Odin and flash the custom rom ??
I can't see any sense in rooting the rom before flashing, it gets eliminated anyway... but I am no expert...
Cheers
there's no need to root your rom, just flash recovery with odin and then flash any rom with the recovery
:good:

Please head over to Doc Holiday's Stock 4.3 thread and follow the instructions to the letter.
I know this is a dumb noob question, but I rooted my s3 with cf autoroot and after updated supersu root works fine and knox is removed but i want to install the cm11 4.4 rom, 2?s, im still on stock recovery, can I install cm11 without flashing twrp or cm recovery and also since i had the 4.3 update will cm11 brick my phone? I was told it tries to flash the bootloader and I know thats prob a bad idea.
thanks,

I see cm11 in goo manager, just dont wanna click it and brick it LOL, anyone know if it would be safe?
Install a custom recovery first. Then flash the zip in the recovery. You'll be fine and should not brick. I've done the same

thx, i installed clockwork mod recovery then beanstalk 4.4, seems to be working
I just got a Rogers note 2. I'm a little lost on how to install a custom rom/recovery on this device. I only have experience with the nexus 4 and htc one x,s and evo 3D. So i know the basic adb commands and such and have fastboot set up. Basically as an end result I want a custom rom, kernel and a working recovery. I was also wondering if a custom rom such as cm10 supports the s-pen? and can I flash a at&t rom on my Canadian phone?
Info:
Model: SGH-I317M
Android: 4.3
Baseband: I317MVLUCMK5

Recovery: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2159652
S Pen: you can get some spen feature with AOSP roms but most of em will not be like a touchwiz rom.
Yes you can use att rom on your note but you might need to manually input your APN. This is no big deal.

You can do it both way. If you have a costum recovery installed you can flash the zip file provided in the thread. If not you can flash it with Odin.
It all in the thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2159652

You first need to root, I think there are two ways of doing it, I usually do it with odin and cf-autoroot. I'm not familiar with other ways.
Then you can install recovery trough odin OR using goo manager from playstore and press menu, install open recovey script
Once you have done all this, you will be ready to install a new rom.
Take a look at the cf-autoroot thread and the twrp thread in the development section.
Read a lot before attempting stuff, you need to prepare yourself and understabd how it works or your risk ending up with an expensive paperweight.

OK sounds good. I just thought some firmware you couldn't root. Am I good to install kernels like that too? Most phones I have owned need an unlocked boot loader to flash kernels. Are Samsung phone pre unlocked.
