I have and have tried to answer most. I been on 4.4 from day 3 no issues. So many people dirty flashing not following rules flashing kernels from 4.3 on 4.4. I have seen so many dumb moves that all could of been avoided by reading.

well i was instructed how to properly update which i knew how to but wasn't quite sure about boot-loaders. but what gets me is i flashed the factory image and even on stock with no root, no rom, no kernel i had issues with network dropping, FC'ing apps, random reboots daily, Samsung Knox still causing issues daily (i deleted all apk + odex), only Philz recovery decided to work too TWRP 2.7 4.4 Boot loader edition wont work for anything nothing gets applied at all in that recovery. The only good thing KK has given me is slightly better battery.
YET on 4.3:
Stable, Works, No Samsung Knox issues, Working Recoveries, No network issues, No audio crackling issues
The only reason im still on KitKat is the fact that im waiting for a ROM that will be actually good that's near stock and odexed.
I rooted and updated using the cf easy update. Followed all steps. Noticed there was no network so I switched Sims, still no network. I factory reset , still no network. So I tried flashing just the new modem all via Odin 3.09 still nothing.

Hit thanks by accident. ...but I was gonna say I had the opposite experience. ...got my n3 from tmo about 3 weeks ago with 4.3 and had random reboots. ...no root or custom recovery. ..jumped on kitkat when it dropped and rooted, debloated and threw custom recovery on it and now No reboots, wifi issues, imei loss, or any of the other issues I've seen people report.
I remember back in my og evo days on one of the forums....that suddenly it arose that many people thought they were doing full wipes and turned out their idea of full wipe meant cache and dalvik.....they didn't realize they needed to wipe system and data......so my point is that there usually tends to be issues based on people's different approaches to upgrading though they swear they followed directions.

You shouldn't have to that zip I posted (linked earlier in this thread) clears the efs so th phone can rebuild it on boot. Samsung must have gotten sick of getting corrupted efs phones for warranty service so they built in a method for the phone to restore it. Problem is it only works once the efs has been cleared. As mentioned before it is at your own risk but I can confirm it worked for me .

1. If you are using an unofficial version of a rom then please check if it has know issues. (the developer usually lists them on the rom page)
2. Use Odin to reflash your original files.
3. They are available. Just search for them on google with your model number.
4. This should solve your signal problem.
5. Now reroot following a proper guide.
6. Flash an official version of a rom or if not available a rom with lesser issues. Current many unofficial kitkat ports have signal problems and blue tooth problems.

How common is this I would likevcto flash some roms and all that good stuff. I have been reading about people phones not working after rooting and applying a Rom. Should I be worried ? Should I wait? And if it's all good any methods that worked cleanly for other people ? Thanks in advance

Any help greatly appreciated ready to flash away
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
I wouldn't say its very common as there are tons of people flashing and we dont hear about half the forum crying about corrupting their imei, thats not to say that its a non issue though. As you can probably see from the numerous threads (main one in the att development). Its advisable to wait, but with any flash you know the risk you are taking.
I was actually holding off till yesterday, ended up just saying eff it and flashed, did the non trip rooting, flashed the latest cwm from the official cwm site. Flashed Aokp, no imei wipe (was scared ****less the whole time though ) Decided i didnt even like the AOKP rom and flashed my carriers stock rom again through odin, So far so good.
However in the future im waiting for a full solution to this imei problem before i root or flash again. :good:
Id say just read the threads, if you understand the risks and want to proceed go ahead. good luck

i flashed my phone with the original at&t root method (which increased flash counter). since then, i've flashed the stock rom (UCALEM) to get non-modified status, reset the flash counter, and flashed the stock update rom (UCALG1) with no problems so far. i wasn't even aware of the imei issues until poking around the forums the other day. i suppose ignorance really is bliss.
---------- Post added at 08:05 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:00 PM ----------
i should add.. i used the stock root injected roms (after the initial flash) from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426
So ish there a chance even if we follow AT&T stuff directly? I've never heard of this happening I've had and flashed a lot of phones and never heard of such a thing should we worry or what I wanna flash but don't won't a brick

i think there's always the chance... but you can reduce that chance significantly if you read up and follow the directions.
With all of the forums merged it was so hard to get a read on the real amount of IMEI Problems by AT&T Users.
So a quick poll / count. Who has lost their IMEI on AT&T.

I lost my IMEI on my first Sgs3, went flash happy (only AT&T ROMs) but still had data and cell. Not sure where I lost it, but I noticed when I was flashing back to rooted stock from early CM10 preview (official) is when I noticed.
So far with my new phone, I've done the same and still have it. I'm now running Aokp jellybean.
I've had no problems as of today but the fear of losing my imei has definitely caused me to not experiment as much as I would like to! I've rooted, installed CWM-Touch, flashed Ktoonsez Kernel, and flashed back to the AT&T Kernel. I'm honestly afraid to try CM as it seems that ALOT of the people who have lost their IMEI had flashed CM10 or CM9. I bought a Galaxy Tab 2 7" a few months back and it's become my tinker toy to flash ROM's and mess with. I don't want to screw up my $500 Galaxy S3, I like it too much!
I voted as flashed a few, but really it is probably closer to many. Only AOSP based ROMs though. CM9, CM10, and AOKP plus updates for each. Also both Faux and Ktoonsez kernels at various times. IMEI still present.
I do make sure that I flash the EXACT same way every time though since it has worked so far. Only thing I have changed now is moving from latest non-touch CWM (installed through ROM Manager) to latest TWRP (through Goo Manager).
If I end up losing my IMEI without adding variables to my flash process, I will start to believe it is a random occurrence. Until then I have to think partial user error coupled with a bad update script or recovery.
I ALWAYS download the file straight to my phone via WiFi.
Reboot into recovery. Wipe>Factory reset.
Flash ROM.
The last couple days since moving to TWRP I have felt more ballsy and did things a bit differently.
For the first time, I also wiped cache and Dalvik before flashing JB AOKP last night
Still no issues.
Today I decided to flash the ktoonsez JB kernel. I usually only download via WiFi at home (just to keep minimal variables in flashes) but today I did it at work via WiFi. Still have IMEI.
I have NEVER done a Format System so not sure if that might break something.
My process has been if it isn't breaking, try to keep the process as consistent as possible. If something does go wrong, I can say what I did differently. I also haven't had any trouble with the ROMs I flashed despite only doing factory reset then flash.
How do I know if I have any issues with this. What do I look for. I found out and mines good.

I know you found out, but when it happens you will know.
In some cases it seems as though you only get Edge at your maximum speed, in others your mobile data completely died. Generally speaking, there was a lot of confusion and some issues with clarity regarding the issue.
It's possible that there are several different (but vaguely related) issues going around, now that we have our own carrier based forums that should actually help clear it up in my opinion.
Hopefully we will all reach a general consensus on the acceptable recovery (my vote is TWRP!) and method of flashing. The only thing I've personally considered is that it might be an issue with the files transferring via MTP (only because I've never used a phone with MTP instead of mass storage).
I don't think people should be THAT afraid to flash though. If your flash counter is at 0, Samsung should do a warranty swap for you. In addition, it seems like 2 in 25 people (read: NOT FLASHES, but people.) seem to get the issue based only off of the very small number of people in this poll so far.
The reason the issue is so feared is because those that do get it will inevitably be far more vocal than those that don't as they try to find a solution and vent their frustration. Most of the people in the major thread about it didn't have the issue, but were afraid they might lose their IMEI.
I flashed the stock rooted tar that doesn't trip your counter, then injected CWM with dd. I've flashed everything with CWM since then, CM10 included (once) and I still have my IMEI. I'm running AOKP JB now.

Go for nontrip flash root + CWM topic - worked for so many people without issues.
The only way to screw up IMEI with these ROMs is via Odin, I think. Odin is a scary tool without much documentation, and in past used to be buggy.
Once you get CWM - do not use Odin.

Odin is a scary tool indeed. Someone in the IMEI thread said if I was feeling feisty to flash stock nonrooted OTA ROM via Odin straight from JB AOKP. IMEI is still intact after all that I have done.
EDIT: Also, anyone who reads this. Try out TWRP. We need more people flashing with TWRP, if an IMEI goes missing while using it we can rule out CWM being the problem as some have suggested.

Don't do it if you think you might ever want to be able to use Odin as a recovery option. Once you upgrade to 4.3 on AT&T you're stuck if something bad happens to your phone you're going to have a hard time fixing it.
If yours sure you want to do it then Odin your phone back to an early firmware as soon as it boots it will force you to take an update. It may be 4.1.2 or it may be 4.3? Not sure but you just let the phone update through ota. Or alternately there are files with instructions in threads labeled with names similar to 4.3 OTA official.

Well right now there are some disadvantages, imho, to upgrading to 4.3 stock, once the bootloader is updated you cannot downgrade to any other build at this time, but that is a call for u to make, if you want to ota to 4.3 you have to get on stock 4.1.2 which you do through odin and then ota, not what I would do at this time just to many horror stories for my taste on 4.3 right now

It is all up to you. I have 4.3 and am happy with it. It is very stable and has decent battery life. It isn't without issues though. I have problems with it giving me the weak wifi signal message or that my Internet is too slow (10Mbps DSL? Slower than some but certainly no slouch) when it does this it disconnects and I have to manually tell it to reconnect. The other thing is in my battery stats built in the rom not all of the apps are being logged only things like screen on time, cell standby, wifi, bluetooth, basic phone stuff but none of the apps???
Why I wish I hadn't done it? Because I lost the ability to be able to recover my phone with Odin and the ability to do whatever it is I want to with the bootloaders.

Read the stickys here and in the general section it will have nearly all of the information and tools you need. Then you can get firmware to flash in Odin from http://www.sammobile.com go there register for an account click firmwares in the top bar of the site and search for your phones model number such as mine is SGH-I747 and a Canadian phone or Mexican phone would be SGH-I747M.

I take absolutely no responsibility of any bad things that happen if you use the above links. make sure you understand the tasks you are wanting to preform and the risks associated with such, 4.3 has caused MANY HARD BRICKS.
ok i just did this but i think i might of messed up. i did just as the op said and i was at the downgrading part and now my screen is on the samsung screen and just flashing

Give it a few minutes to try to boot then pull the battery, boot to recovery and do a factory reset. if that doesn't work then flash the odin file again.
When you do get the 4.3 it will take several minutes to boot it will look like its stuck on the boot screen but be patient it will likely boot eventually.

No it shouldnt take ten minutes but 4.3 takes considerably longer than all the roms I have used in the past.
You are still at the stage of flashing 4.1.1 correct? if it didnt boot just reflash it(uncheck the box for auto reboot so you have to pull the battery out after you flash it) then go to recovery and do a factory reset, then reboot the phone, it should boot this time.
You did check to make 100% sure you downloaded the correct 4.1.1 file for the phones model? right?
Don't mean to make anybody sound silly just trying to figure out exactly whay is going on.

i got passed it. i guess i wasn't patient enough lol. i'm on 4.3 now. now time to try to root and flash beanstalk lol.
pitbullmommy45245 said:
ok i got passed that. i got to the part where you flash 4.3. it was going through the flash then it got to a part where two errors came up in red (i couldn't see what they were it rebooted right after) and then it rebooted but got stuck on the att ball and wouldn't reboot. then i went into recovery and it was all red and blue and the android had a triangle with a red exclimation mark. i just tried to reflash but it keeps doing the same thing. it gets stuck on the att ball.

Do you still have custom recovery (Which one do you have) or do you have the stock recovery?
Edit: I see you edited your post after I quoted you to respond, glad you got it going, now just follow the guides as written for root, I had to use method #2, but you should try method 1 first.
Good luck
Whoa, this has got to be one of the most unorganized forums on the internet. LoL, sorry, its just soooo hard to find clear, up to date info, that I had to make a thread here.
I basically decided its time to update my phone and I want to root it, mainly to get battery savings and stop google from running all those apps in the background (who knows what info they are gathering).
Anyways, like the title states,
I'm on Tmobile, with a M919 on 4.3 with MK2, I would like to go to kitkat and root and NOT TRIP KNOX, if possible.
I'd also be interested in custom roms, if possible, like CyanogenMod... But of course, I'd like to keep my warranty, as I've already had to use it once, and I still have 2 whole months left and wifi is acting up (I get a lot of unstable wifi messages recently, didn't check my router yet but my laptop is working fine....)
Your help is appreciated.
Thx
ohh, my wife's phone is on 4.2.2, she is due for an update too, she wants the emoticons so that's one "major" reason to update...
Perhaps I can switch phones with her, and update that one to a rooted 4.4.2 without tripping knox, if possible?? Please point me in the right direction... I also like many of the features that dbombmod rom has, like call recording and more..
Yours is gonna trip Knox.
Trade her for yours. And update your modem to nb4 this way:

cool thanks, I will read up on safe root, but it looks like it may work. So once I'm rooted, I can install any rom right, even the 4.4.2 with knox removed and it would be fine right? And also the NB4 modem as well, and any kernel too?
My wife is hesistant to switch with me now because of the wifi unstable issue I have. I think I may have fixed it by clearing the Wifi Direct and Wifi Direct apps cache and data. Hopefully it is only a software problem, and not a hardware problem.
oyyy, after further reading, this does root the phone, but doesn't unlock the bootloader, and without an unlocked bootloader you cannot install custom roms, but I still didn't read if I can install another modem or another kernel???
what about towelroot? Does that unlock the bootloader?
tried towelroot on 4.3...
didn't work
updated to 4.4.2,
still doesn't work
ughhh
ohhh well, I guess I will switch phones with wife...
Lol. You can still download custom ROMs with a locked bootloader. If you do flash the NB4 modem you will definately trip KNOX. If you flash a non stock kernel you will trip KNOX and if you flash a custom recovery you will trip KNOX.

I finished setting up my old phone for my wife. I "Turned off" many of the apps that are installed that we never use, so her battery should do ok on 4.4.2
I just did towelroot on her phone, and it has instant root access, no reboot required or anything. Root Checker says I have root already. yay. Now I guess I need to update with modded firmware. Is there any particular order I have to install stuff?
Can I start with the rom, then modem, then kernel or is there a particular order I need to install stuff. And what should I use, odin or what?

You can flashbin any order. Some ROMs come with a kernel that they recommend but you can flash a different one if you prefer. If you DL Titanium Backup from the play store you can freeze any unwanted apps completely instead of just turning them off.

just to clarify, I did the towel root on her old phone on 4.2.2 which is my phone now.
towelroot didn't work on 4.3 nor 4.4.2
I just did a wipe on the 4.2.2 with clockworkmod setup and tried to install the fenny stock 4.4.2 rom and it came up with an error, something about expects 5 args got 4
should I use odin or something?

turn off Google now as well if she doesn't use it, saves a ton of battery! and you just flash the ROM and then the modem, kernel is in the rom.. read the guides on how to flash the NB4 modem on older bootloader, and read OP of the ROM you are flashing, there should be flashing instructions for you too, good luck!

Thanks, I searched and found out that TWRP is the way to go. I used flashify to install it and I was able to flash the new rom. Works good. I also got call recording to work, but not with wifi calls, is that something that never worked or its just a bug in my phone? I'm thinking of trying other roms to see if they got call recording with wifi calls, but that would take a lot of time.
I also did install the NB4 modem flash (twice like the instructions said) and its good, got 2 extra bars (but I doubt my signal got any better, they just want you to see more bars)

Interesting. Not sure what's different, but towelroot did work on my wife's MK2 4.3. Titanium Backup confirmed root and AdAway works so it would seem root access is there.

Completely stock TouchWiz 4.3. OTA update took it from 4.2 to 4.3. It's my wife's phone and she never had any desire for anything custom on it. The only reason I rooted it now was she asked if there was any way to block ads.

Yeah, but you need to be on a stock ROM to get the OTA, or you can download the whole ROM from sammobile.com. It's a security fix for stagefright. I just wanted to try the new modem and see if it made any difference. I won't be able to test the kernel, since I switch back and forth between a 4.4.4 TW ROM and 5.1 CM ROM.
Appreciate the info, have you notice better signal with the new radio?

Maybe a little better signal (?), but basically the same. Haven't been on it real long, I'll have to see if the standby improves after I've been on it a while.

Warning, don't flash this modem. I did and it killed my baseband. I tried flashing 3 other roms which wouldn't even finish booting to my phone before I finally realized it and flashed my original modem back and all was working again.

Working fine on mine. Did you maybe get a bad download? You could maybe try downloading again?
Which modem did you go back to?
Flashed fine and so far no issues. Previous user might have a bad download or different device.
Flashed via TWRP today.. I had no service after reboot but did another restart and it was working.
Don't know if its any better than the previous modem version but will give it a try. thx
Working great here no issues

You caused the problem when you altered the stock ROM. From your thread about it here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-2-tmobile/help/recent-tmo-ota-update-bricked-wifes-t3245890), you said "Had her note 2 with stock 4.3, Rooted it last year to titanium backup and uninstall a couple bloatware apps. " This is what caused your problem. It was no longer a stock ROM when you remove apps. I know it doesn't seem like it would be a big deal, but it is, and you found out unfortunately

That's kinda what I was thinking had happened.
I suppose I shouldn't blame the OTA. I just noticed someone else had issues with it too.
so to the people that actually flashed this new modem and kernel, is it working better than previous iterations?
question:
I flashed the C0H4 modem on note 2 (nameless lollipop rom) seems ok...
DO I have to also flash the Kernel ? is there an advantage to flashing the kernel? thx
Hello! Thanks for this! I flashed this over TWRP 2.8.7.1, and wiping my dalvik cache. My phone's originally T889UVALK8 (16gb SGH-T889 t0ltetmo) and the signal drops but after flashing this (C0H4) the signal greatly improved, although I'm having some signal instability since I'm supposed to have full bars because my house is just in line of sight, 2km from the tower. Also I think I'll do a clean install of another custom ROM since I'm using the CM12.1 t0lte nightly, and maybe this affects my signal (I know I'm stupid for doing it but it works).
Welp. After rebooting, the phone lost signal again. I have to do a wipe of dalvik cache to restore my signal. I guess I'll try using another ROM instead.
Upodate: I may be experiencing hardware issues. I have yet to flash back to stock since my phone's signal drops. I can't flash the firmware because it says 'zip signature verification failed.'
