Connected to WiFi but no internet connection - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

Hi,
I both have a Galaxy Nexus and a Nexus 7 2013, and just this morning, I don't have internet connection even though both of my devices are connected to our home WiFi. The weird thing is that all of our other wireless devices here in our home are working fine. I'm on my laptop connected on WiFi as we speak (write).
My brothers' smartphones are all working fine. They have an Alcatel, a Samsung Note 1 and 2. I have an old Samsung Galaxy Ace, and it can connect to the internet too.
The weird thing is that it happened simultaneously with both of my Nexus devices. I have my Galaxy Nexus for almost two years already, and I never experienced this before. I got my Nexus 7 just this December 2013, and it has been working fine until this morning.
My Galaxy Nexus is on stock 4.3 and rooted. My Nexus 7 is on stock 4.4.2 and rooted as well.
I've tried restarting both of my Nexus, and tried removing WiFi settings and reconfigure them again.
I'm not sure on how to proceed on this matter.
Thanks in advance.
Update:
I left my Galaxy Nexus for a while, and I got a connection. I was about to hard reset my wireless router.
My Nexus 7 is still the same. It's like having a limited or no connectivity on a PC/laptop.

What is your home WiFi? A/b/g/n ?
Nam Huy Linux http://namhuy.net

By chance, would you happen to be using any Bluetooth accessories?

No. I don't have any Bluetooth connections here at home.
My home WiFi is set to mix of A/b/g/n.

Can you access a website through ip address instead of url? (to exclude dns issues), do you use any mod which you flash on both?

The first thing to try is definitely to reset your WiFi router.

I did hard reset my WiFi router a dozen of times, and it's still the same.
The visiting a site through IP address did not work as well. My mobile devices aren't connecting to the internet.

Right now, I've got connection. Out of my frustration, I told my older brother about it. When I woke up, I've got connection. I asked him about it, he' saying about the MAC address clone.

Is your router security setting set to transmit it's ssid? Android has problems connecting if it's hidden :silly: sounds to me like your DNS server isn't working properly though.

It has been hidden ever since. We've been using it that way for more than two years. It just acted up like this recently.

Have you tried this?

I think I know the reason why. Apparently, my older brother is a Cisco certified professional, and he has been playing with the settings on both of the router and modem.
He created an enterprise-like policy on our home network and was affecting our devices. He's such a scumbag!

When you know a lot in these matters you end up deleting essential files.?
Just flash stock recovery and you are good to go!

I just got my Nexus today, so I apologize if I am way off base here... but why not use the Tethering & Portable Hotspot function that is built into the stock 4.1.1 settings? Just to test it, both my wife's phone and iPad both connected to my tether, and were able to pull down webpages just fine. In case you didn't see it, under More... in the wireless & networks section, you will find Tethering.
If you're on Sprint, flash the tether.zip in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1658288
This will allow you to use the built in tethering without needing to pay for the hotspot feature. You'll need a custom recovery.
I don't pay for any sort of hotspot feature. The FCC ruling forced carriers like Verizon to not charge for it, and fined them over 1 million bucks for doing so. http://www.extremetech.com/electronics/133810-how-everyone-benefits-from-verizons-fcc-mandated-free-tethering

Tethering Not working...

So I am using Straight Talk ATT... and I realize its against all terms of service and so on...
But it still should work. so far I cant get the APP wifi tether to work or FoxFi says its not available for ATT Nexus 4.
What are you guys using? on any carrier
Use the one built into android...
settings > (under wireless & networks category) more > Tethering and Mobile Hotspot
There are also plenty of widgets in the market that will allow you to use a quick toggle.

Probably drivers if you're using USB tether. Try Wi-Fi.

That is WiFi... Also tried USB... It connects and gets an IP but no data is transfered. Its sending and receiving but not actual data is working

Try doing it with Open security, change the SSID and if you are using Win 7 make sure you select a profile (home, work, public) it will take a few seconds before it will work even though it is connected and assigned an IP. Also try it on something else, it make be your computer and not the phone.
Also, I find it odd that it only shows up as an Ad-Hoc Network? not an actual AP like normal
Hmm, I'm have the same problem with my Nexus 4. I'm with rogers and I used the sim from my Galaxy Nexus in my Nexus 4. Using the built in tethering Wifi and USB works on my Galaxy Nexus, but the on the Nexus 4, devices can connect but no data is transferred even though data is working.
The only thing I can think of is because I'm using the rogers LTE APN on the N4 but the normal APN on the GN.
Could this be caused by the straight talk APN that I am using? I am having he same type of situation. It connects but no data is transferred.

I found it where if you connect and reconnect, it'll eventually work.
It is a bit buggy how it works but it does work somehow. Just keep trying!

Add "dun" to your APN type.
Tried adding dun and still not working. Any other ideas?

if you tether LTE plan, will you get LTE speeds on the other connecting phones? or just the original host LTE phone
so anyone else have Straight talk and get this to work?
I had the same problem (with T-Mobile), adding "dun" as mayastig suggested did the trick.
Specifically, the APN type for epc.tmobile.com now reads "default, supl, mss, dun".
Sorry to be off the straight talk topic.. don't know about that but I am on the $30 tmob plan.
I just really need to tether maybe twice a month and I can't see spending $15 on that. My question is, of I do it using fox will tmob find out and ban me or something?

This is the best I can do for you.
http://www.kombitz.com/2009/02/09/windows-7-how-to-create-an-ad-hoc-network/
Also, check your security settings. Some devices will not see a wireless network with security settings it can't support.
Rarely, because it's an international thing, channel settings can also prevent discovery. Just something to think about. Not that it should be an issue but may want to double check.

Android has issues with ad hoc sometimes. Certain devices like the Kindle fire can only use infrastructure based wifi due to the chipset used and/or the drivers included. Infrastructure mode is a more robust and stable network vs ad hoc too. I get about an extra 20' in range on infrastructure vs ad hoc. On infrastructure I can cover my entire 3600 sqft house with 1 access point getting 2-3 bars at the farthest end of the house, with ad hoc the back side of my house gets very weak or no signal at all. If your router/hotspot is capable I'd recommend settinf it up in infrastructure mode with the same ssid and security key (if you use one) and go from there

Is it a work pc? If so, they may have a blocker of sorts. I worked at EA Games and could never connect to any of the test laptops via ad hoc. Even using third party. But, I could come home and connect with no problem.

You said your phone's reception sucks at work. I'm sure someone will chime in if I'm wrong. Are you trying to get better data connection or phone connection? If phone, piggybacking off a router or PC won't help you to make calls if you can't now, unless you're using some form of voip on the phone. The SMS and phone voice run on the same line (I think). If you put the phone into airplane mode, but turned on wifi, you wouldn't receive calls or text. You'd only be able to do data. You have to be on a sprint tower to use the phone part.
Also, if you want your phone to get on adhoc and you can't now, you need a modified wpa_supplicant file for this phone. I don't know how to mod the file but a simple file swap and reboot would do it. At least that's how I did it with my original sprint galaxy 7" tab.

Reception is fine, it's just that data speeds at work are painfully slow. If I have a lot of apps to update on my phone, would be nice to just piggy back into the work network and do it that way.
My research has indicated that I'll need a modified wpa_supplicant, like you said, and I've tried some that are floating out there but they all seem to bork my wifi and I haven't been able to locate one specifically for the E4GT. Also, I have no idea how to mod it myself lol

Is there a way to report a different MAC address on stock android?

Hello everyone,
I recently bought a new Nexus 7 tablet. Unfortunately, my place of employment does not allow Android devices to be hooked up to the internal network, which is MAC restricted (its BS, I know). One of the IT guys was nice enough to add my Nexus phone to the network but he is not around anymore. So the only way I can get internet access on my tablet at work is to report the same MAC address that is on my phone or laptop. Is there a way to do this? Thanks!
I doubt it. The mac address is the physical address for the device. I'm sure it's not possible to alter.

Have you tried the Linux command to change mac address.. You will need root and busybox.. Though I have never tried it but it may work..

You would have to tweak the kernel code to get this working.
Hmmm interesting. I assumed it would be easier to change. It is quite simple to do in Windows. Thanks anyway!

and which superuser app are you using? i.e. supersu, koush's

I don't know if they can block a MAC based on Android. I'm in IT and it is easier to block all and only allow approved devices such as PCs and Laptops.
Unless you copy the MAC of your PC or something but they'll detect 2 MACs from 2 different PCs.
Your best bet is to grab another WiFi dongle for your PC and download a WiFiRouter program to share. Or a 4G cellular card.
Just be careful.

Could be that the device must be rebooted after the MAC is changed in order for all network components to recognize the change. Don't know it that has been tried.

Use ifconfig and macchanger commands, setup a script to run then when your company's bssid is in range, then reboot or use another script to change it back.
This is assuming those commands work. I'm not sure. That is just how I do it in backtrack on a pic.

How to set up a WiFi hotspot

Hi
Can anybody steer me in the right direction. I have a nx7 2013 I want to connect it to a WiFi network but it won't connect, just goes from connecting to saved, help desk won't help, so I thought if I can get my phone to connect to WiFi network I can then connect my tablet to network through phone by setting up WiFi hotspot ( think this is right). I have never set up a WiFi hotspot so am a newbie at this can anybody help or know where there are some simple instructions. Thanks
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Free mobile app
As far as hotspot goes, I don't think you can get it through wifi. It has to come from your cellular data. Just be aware that you will be using your phone data. Do you need directions to set up hotspot? It depends on your device and your carrier. On GP devices, it's under wireless and networks>more. It should be somewhere in network/wireless settings. When you activate it, your device will generate an ssid and a passcode to use for connecting devices.
However, your tab will use its WiFi to connect to the phone's hotspot so if that works, I'd say that you either typed in the wrong security code on your N7, or your router needs a reboot-even if every other device connects to it.
