Fast and stable ROM - Samsung Galaxy W I8150

I know that such threads aren't welcomed, but friend of mine just brought me stock 2.3.6 Galaxy W whining that it's so slow. Since I've never flashed I8500 yet, I have absolutely no idea which ROM and kernel should I pick. Idea is to get maximum performance and stability as possible. Could you please help me with recommendation? Thanks

stock rom is still the best.
always row back to stock after tried out those new roms.
u need to know w i8150 hw limits, even with swap n zram, still wont let u play ram hungry apps/games.
i have done my own script n add a few to boost performance/battery saving (no enhancement apps).

Thats simply based on your personal needs I clearly won't use it anymore, if i had to use stock rom. For me a slimmed 4.4.2 works pretty well

yes, is my personal choice after all i did tried out all those custom roms n still row back to stock rom.
tried 4.4.2, no 3G, no over-the air radio, does not wait up when i plugin my headset, very hot when play games......etc,etc,
back to stock rom with some tweaks, faster n cool (never hot up), run with no bugs, never once fc (force close).

Thats just what i would say about my phone, too Stable, fast, ui that doesn't hurt my eyes badly (That's really important to me!), not noticed any f/c or (random) reboots yet, temperature is good during use. Of course mobile network works. I feel happy using it
To be fair i have to add that DarkCM 03/19 was first release without issues noticeable for me. All other versions had AT LEAST one bug: ProCapture camera didn't work as it should. May be i find issues while using it. we'll see

I used OneOfAKind Rom now, pretty stable but some apps are just slow and eat a lot of ram. I blamed the apps, not the ROM. You should try it.
I know Stock is great but I upgraded mine because some apps doesn't work on Gingerbread.

luv to share but .......many (cyberbullies) here didnt want it, want latest fads.
GB is old n past just like XP (eol), which to me is the best OS.
use at ur own risk.
requirements:
basic knowledge
rooted phone
init.d support
(if unsure wat to do, search n u will get ur answers).
i only use these two on stock rom, no other enhancements or tweaks.
attached r two files zipped:
1) build.prop.GB.Addon - copy all texts n paste to end of line build.prop, if u have duplicate, just remove the sentences.
(mount read/write b4 edit if u cant edit).
2) VMscript140309 file is a script, u can use script manager if u want but i preferred to copy n paste to etc/init.d.
remember must set permission, chmod rwx,r_x,r_x n chown root, shell, else it wont work.
(mount read/write b4 paste if u cant paste).
edit 03/april:
deleted these lines from build.prop.addon file, becoz GB orig apps - music, gallery n video will not update with new add music, videos n pics.
media.stagefright.enable-player=true
media.stagefright.enable-meta=true

original lines in GB build.prop has two portions:

i'm using this bottom portion, becoz the last entries will be log-in, replacing the first entries.
another concern is the read ahead for the rams/cards, it seem to speed up but when i tried use clockworkmod backup, the md5 is mismatched. backup is useless, if u have this problem, remove those read ahead sentences.

most games with installation files below 100mb runs good, board games will just fly thru.
those power n ram hungry games, i dun recommend play games with installation file above 100mb (hw limitations).
candy crush sage is quite power n ram hungry even its installation file is below 100mb, it runs without problem.
edit:
i played magic mania for more than an hour on GB, generated less heat than when i played candy crush saga on KitKat for less than 10 mins. :silly:

I'm looking at flashing my W too. It has GB still, but I modded it by CWM recovery, root and debrand plus stripped out un-needed bloat. What I want to do with it is flash it to possibly JB and run VIPERaudioFX and either Poweramp or Neutron audio player and mostly keep it as a smart music player for my car. I run a modded quad core phone as my main device now because it is a great multitasker and has a big screen for my failing eyes. The W is a nice, small size for a music front end though. So pocketable or fits nice in the centre console. I still have a thing about that phone despite it being old now. So, a modern and light OS is needed. Must be stable but it's not going to be a main phone. What are the recommendations?
If it's not practical, I will keep GB on it and see if I can slim it down further and if I can get a version of Viper that will work with it.

in general, i recommend stick with GB becoz its less buggy than the new android OS (ics/jb/kk).
if the app(s) cant run on GB, its becoz the app(s) need more RAM (hw limitations).
new OS have swap n zRAM which makes it laggy (in one way or the other).

I found it laggy on GB anyway. Removing Touchwiz and various Sammy apps after installing Legacy Launcher improved things. Also Smart Launcher2 Pro is nice. I'm actually running that one on my W200.
I was thinking getting rid of the Samsung account and extra software plus Keis etc would help things. strip out as much as possible without breaking it, do CWM backups before any major change, just in case.
I do know what you mean by the RAM, despite newer ROMs running well, they do need a lot of RAM. Minimal widgets, only the Gmail account etc will help.
I'll have a play with it. Mine is an i8150T, not an i8150, the Australian Vodafone version. Does the phone support 900MHz 3G in hardware? It's not accessible on my Vodafone ROM as they run 850MHz 3G. Maybe I could use a ROM meant for a different country. I did that with my Garmin Asus Nuvifone a50. Installed a Canadian ROM and got it working on 850 instead of the 900 it was supposed to be on as it was an Optus phone originally.

2.3.5 rom slow graphics

I see people report that new rom is fast in graphics and slow in cpu response but for some reason i'am getting oppposing results
I am using this rom now... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1361368
Reading through 3-4 messages is slugish and its not smooth and angry birds thend to lag. When i was using older jakintaru rom(salsa port) my phone was flying and games where smooth.Anyone have any idea what can i do to make it better?(any tweaks, tried clearing caches)Tnank you in advance
When I referred to faster graphics and slower CPU scores I was referring to the stock RUU of that release.
Rather than Jikantaru's release I installed the stock and let it upgrade my radio, hboot etc.
I have no Supercharger V6 or kernal scripts on it.
I used Link2SD rather than App to SD and any widget app or app that needs good priority on boot, like Set CPU, Battery Monitor Pro, Superuser, etc, I leave on Internal and don't make links to the second EXT2 partition.
Boots nice and fast then and becomes responsive sooner.
I also use Rom Toolbox Pro and define the various startup apps, freeze out system apps that I don't need and leave widgets unloaded that I don't need.
I also make use of the default memory tweak from RTP and the SD card read speed tweak.
I use Green Power for battery and wifi management as well. Works well.
All in all it has allowed me to install 400 MB of apps and I still have 50 MB of internal memory free, plenty of system memory free at all times for things like in memory processing of camera filters, etc, and a responsive, fast booting system.

OK, sorry about my manner but there are lots of people just thinking that the other members are supposed to sort the info for them and I was a little bit nervous after I read some other threads.
We all have to help each other not only with knowledge but with time spending too, I hope the people will become more principle and will request things just after they tried (no matter if they are sure) to find the info themselves.
Regards

Agreed. It's what I've been running on and I've tried every rom on here over the last month.
Off to play with the Salsa Euro 101 with the OC kernel mod and remove Data2SD in exchange for Link2SD.
I would love the Stock RUU 2.3.5 with an overclockable kernel. Nothing else fancy except the ability to have min 19mhz max 806 mhz.
Yeah,i will now install stock and wait for the overclocked kernel and i hope we can then stop flashing our phones every few daysFor now i think we can use that stock 2.3.5 with supercharger scripts couse they do verry nice(lag fix) in my pnone
After installing official rom and some testing i can also confirm that this rom is fastest i have ever triedIt works verry nice, smoth and graphics is great, cheers

[SCRIPT][TWEAK] MPEngine LMK Update 6

Not my work Just sharing it... "
"[Feb-11-13][Update6]-=RPEngine™=- Turn your Lame Ass
Phone into a Good Gaming Rig.
old thread here
What does it do?
-MPEngine is a live engine script which was supposed to help on some parts that LazerDroid script couldn't handle,
but now its complete independent script(some little parts are shared), this one beast engine will demolish all those crappy huge lags
How do i apply?
-if you have a older version of my script, or other scripts, delete them.
-my old script is located in init.d, wipe init.d with cwm, or manually delete them before flashing new version.
-now that my script is coded to be completely UNIVERSAL, i dont see why not combining with the other scripts out there!
-you must have cwm recovery that supports wipe init.d or nandroid backup.
1.first download busybox from stericsonhttps://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=stericson.busybox and install busybox.
2.download the latest flashable zip in attachments, flash through recovery.
3.reboot & enjoy!
for latest RPEngine: -REBOOT TWICE after flashing. its a part of procedure, for full installation.
if you want to uninstall, flash rpengine_uninstall.zip. only works for rpengine.
inside usrguide.txt from MPEngine12
========================================================================================================================
usrguide.txt
article updated at 1-21-13.
hi guys, this is the mpengine author known as Lag Dr. in xda-developers.com
here im going to show you how does it work, benefits of tuning usrsettings, and how to use it.
lets begin!
1.how does it work?
this engine is made to clear out all lags that happens while playing high end games on your inefficient ram memory.(512mb or less)
tuning LMKs will tend to freeup more memory, so many of you think just tuning this will kill all the lags on games.
well then how about gta3 or max payne games? do they work better?
afaik, LMKs kill processes but the leftovers(registered caches) still remain.
the free ramspace youre seeing through task manager is not entirely a freememory.
so even though LMK cleans all the processes, games will suffer from lags because they have to detect which cache remains and which cache gets dumped.
this engine calculates all that sh*t and flushes page caches REALTIME. once you apply this and play a game, you will notice that there is no more hanging on gta3 or max payne games.
some of you may have a question about why this cache doesnt drop dentries and inodes.
its because clearing inodes will make apps totally lose control and have to rebuild it again, what a resource waste. also apps will still be able to load faster since inodes and dentries remain.
page cache normally takes up bigger amount of ram than dentries or inodes. so why you want to drop all caches? dropping only page cache is more efficient than ever!
2.advantages of tuning usrsettings
this version has a cool feature called usrsettings.
changing values for this file will immediately take affect, you dont have to reboot(except VALUE11 & VALUE14).
the default settings were based on my crappy and sluggish radiowave walkie-talkie, so manually tuning them for your own device may give you much more advantages.
3.how to use usrsettings.
there is a file called usrsettings on the same directory. open with text editor, and edit.the descriptions about which value does sth is included in there also. good luck!
(some engine parts were disabled by default like dalvik booster, but these settings can be re-enabled by editing usrsettings. oh, and some easter eggs are hidden in there)
thats all for now. enjoy

How to check if it works?
for new RPEngine™.
-open terminal shell
-type cat /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches.
-if the result is 1, it means its working!
if you have problem that the script doesnt get applied, try manually extracting files and copy those files into the right position.
-/rpengine/ should be pasted to your /system/rpengine/
-/etc/ should be pasted to your /system/etc/
-/xbin/ should be pasted to your /system/xbin/
test it and some feedback please

Every times i flash this tweak , i will get bootloop.
I have tried it on CM9/CM10/AOKP
none of them works for me.
Many people have asked the OP , why we get bootloop ,why the values of cat /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches always 0
but he seldom answer them and never fix it lol
a certain co-filipino xda member here,, also shared that thing to our own filipino forums/android section,,
i was tempt to try it,.,, and flash the latest mpengine_12,,
he said i just flas it via cwm,,, but after flashing,,, my wonder never got the chance to boot... i've tried to wipe cache/dalvik/fp/ but to no avail...
my wonder didnt even got the chance to reach the bootanimation,,,,,, after the wonder preview,, it was just plain black screen....
Hmm.. I guess i habe to delete this thread since everyones isnt working...

the same thing happened in our forum,, some said they're stuck at bootloop,, others confirmed that their device works wickedly faster and smoother...(someone confirmed that by using the tweak,,, he was able to play nba2k13 to an xperia mini pro)
so i guess its just a matter of tweaking to make it work to our devices....
iv followed n tried the mpengine since mpengine 10 n the command given"0".sometimes give "3".did try the manual method using terminal n got "1" but after rebooting my device the command didnt work anymore..iv tried many other tweaks to my wonder..for those who really want to try this tweak, try follow every step of the instruction including the installation of the busybox.if im not mistaken from the original thread someone did mention that the installing busy box from that particular provider/site is an important step together with the removal of any other script n tweak.(im guessing not only in the init.d but mayb in xbin folder if there is any)hope it will help and CMIIW.

Confused Noob needing Help

Hi,
My Note is hardly 5 months old and i see that to dial a number twice it's taking 10 seconds! It pauses, returns back to the dialer and then finally dials. I'm wondering whether flashing a custom ROM will solve this problem and also if i flash one, is my warranty void for eternity?

Greetings,
It might be a good idea to install Quadrant (benchmark) and run it after you restart your device, to have a check on the hardware capabilities and compare.
If your device is loaded with some applications that hog its RAM with background processes you may need to uninstall them. Check your application manager, go to running applications to see what is using your memory.

It's your choice mate but keep in mind that on some ROMS you would lose some of the unique capabilities of your s-pen or some other stuff like HDMI out (on non touchwiz based roms).
I like to have a best of both worlds and running Criskelo ROM (tw based) v17 with saber kernel. It's still 4.2.1 but rock stable, great battery life and with overclock it's faster than stock ROM but you would need to run a benchmark to notice it.
Hi friend you can choose Swift rom, im using it and it is fast and im having a screen time of 8:30 hours, you can try it, or choose an aosp rom but youll lose all the s pen functions and the sammys camera, you can even try changing other kernel, hope i helped

That was just a discussion thread... and now some people think that just because it can run on 512MB RAM they can install it on their phones straight away... If kitkat ever comes to the Arc/S it will take a while for it to become stable enough for daily use. Also, the drivers we use are old since there have been no updates. If you guys want kitkat running successfully on this device, these old drivers need to be integrated with the new software, which is very tedious. Mike is already going to drown under 4.2 and 4.3, adding another OS to the pile will place him under more stress.
Don't assume the work we developers do is simple, just because an update came out that meets the system specifications means it can run just by downloading and installing it in recovery. If you ever tried to create a ROM by yourself, you'll find out that a lot of work needs to be done, along with many user complains and flooding your development thread with useless posts. That's how messed up the user community is nowadays. Jader's UHD ROM thread is one example of how users interact with the developer.

Im sorry, but which part of perhaps its a "definitely yes"?
I just point to that thread so he and anybody with the same question can see that it really going to depends on how google code it and how hard could be for the developers to bring that code to our devices...
I never declared that it will be a fact, but you have to admit that the 512 MB its a nice hope.

That reply was for that thread itself since some prick was like "hey Kitkat runs on 512MB devices"... I wasn't even referring to you in the first place.
Yes, it is hopeful but not promising, see Mike's reply at the thread itself

Yes, it's possible to port Android 4.4 for our device but it all really depends on if there will be any developer / developers who want to spend their time porting 4.4 for our device. Mike have started working on it for our devices, but we will see when or if he releases it or not.
I might see if I'm able to sync the sources, but the main problem on my end is that my PC is really bad and not suited for development.

Yes, Harsh is developing the same, follow the link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2134257&page=184
The fact that it can run, does not mean that it will run.
Either way, I am sure the devs will be porting it over in no time.

but kitkat based in my option is bet AORP kitkat rom try it
Just as a suggestion, I'm currently using VanirAOSP and it's pretty good. All I've to say is that right now one should get the vanir_anzu_4.4.2.012814 version, as the latest, vanir_anzu_4.4.2.022314, has a few additional bugs. On the mentioned good version WiFi works, everything is fairly smooth and you're left with enough space to actually install the apps you want, which seems to be an issue on many roms due to Arc's small internal memory.. Only real problem's the default browser lagging terribly, but I hear that's a general issue? Anyway, for anyone interested in kitkat on Arc it's definitely worth checking out.

Tried it. Really cool ROM, some minor bugs but its OK
KitKat 4.4.2 AOKP and ART-runtime enabled
It is very well possible to use KitKat 4.4.2 on our phones. Even with ART-runtime enabled. I personally use AOKP (Android Open Kang Project)'s KitKat version, and I managed to get ART-runtime enabled and running very fast and smooth.
You can find the ROM here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2624761
Of course you have to first install the kernel, which is given in the zip-file. Just unzip the kernel and Flashboot it to your device. Then go into CWM-recovery and go to Mounts and Storage and activate USB-mount. Locate the full AOKP-zip and place it on your SD-Card, as wel as the minimal Gapps for 4.4.2., found here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2012857. Unmount the USB, and install the zip as usual through the menu for it. Then, after installing AOKP, install the minimal Gapps.
Reboot and let your device sit for a while, or play around with it a bit....
I proceeded with installing Mounts2SD from playstore, while before having prepared my class10 8 Gb sdcard into two partitions. One partition FAT32, size about 6Gb and one partition EXT2 size around 2 Gb. Move everything to SD-card through the menu of Mounts2sd, except Dalvik-cache. NEVER MOVE THIS!!! (Don't move dalvik-cache to SD...)
Reboot at least two times to let the script (Mounts2sd) settle in... After this I installed Pimp-my-Rom from playstore and activated the nav-bar and some other scripts to improve the experience. Also I odexed (after finishing all my modifications) the phone through this : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2527732
I then went to CWM-recovery through a reboot and made a full backup, which I advice you to do also, in case something goes horribly wrong.
Reboot to AOKP. As you can see, this ROM is awesome-fast beyond belief already. I had benchmarks in AnTuTu of around 6000, with NoFrills-CPU at 1401 Mhz. But, it can be faster if you choose to run ART-runtime instead of Dalvik. Be sure to remove all unwanted programs before switching to ART-runtime, because it'll take a lot of space in cache, and every program you don't need (system-programs that is) will reserve more space for ART.
Only and ONLY if your system is running smoothly on Dalvik, I advise you to go to your Phone-settings, (under Settings of course) and tap on 'Build-number' like 10 times. You will now become a developer. An extra menu will appear under Settings, where you can choose to run the ART-runtime library. Choose this and you will reboot.
Wait, wait and wait a long time for reboot. After initial booting everything has to be updated to ART-compiled apps. This will take a long time per app. Just wait and don't disturb your phone. If you get to the phone after booting, then you probably succeeded... You can check under the same settings-tab under Developer-options. If ART is selected, then you have it.
I strongly advice in case of mishaps regarding loss of network etc. to just reboot. Wait, wait and eventually you'll get there. Make a backup as soon as you have a stable working system under CWM-recovery.
I have been running stable ART under this AOKP-rom for about two weeks now and I'm really happy with it. Not only is the phone lightning-fast (6417 under AnTuTu, with CPU on my Arc LT15i on 1401 Mhz), but smooth as hell! Batterytime is amazing. This is as fast as it's gonna get! (I must have tried almost every ROM out there from stock 4.0.1 to 4.4.2...)
Hope you'll try and may it work for you too...!
(BTW my ultimate thanks to the guys from Open Kang Project!)
P.S. stock-browser is lagging... as usual under 4.4, but I use Dolphin and it is fast! Some toggles require reboot to function again. Some programs might fail you due to not being ready for ART. Facebook is a mess for instance, sometimes quitting unresponsice etc. Otherwise I have encountered no problems whatsoever.
Tried ION kernel and stuff and I can say that apart of one or two really minor bug the KK experience is just awesome and will be better within some months i suggest you to follow all the "Xperia Overlay" thing a I hope it gonna be amazing:laugh:

For memory management, i trust it to NX engine tweak and sreeder in int.d folder, u can try it. dont forget too make bakcup firts, ( but you have to install int.d first), for facebook some times i got lag on it . but not often.
i've tried many roms n tweaks, GB is still the best (least bugs).
minimalist stock GB, ie. removed all samsung bloated apps, add my own tweaks and use black wallpaper. :good:
I flashed back to stock (then rooted and debloated it) just for "old times sake"............
Might flash to KitKat if there is an option to swap storage partitions.....

Dark CM is based on CM11 = KitKat.
KhaN is compatible with arco's BUT arco's doesn't support swap and also was kinda buggy for me. But Arco is really great as all builds are based on his work
Most reliable release yet for me was Mokee OS
Just flashed Dark CM........
Seems kinda strange (in a good way) to see those three little numbers.....
4.4.2
being displayed on my W......
My wife says I'm a phone geek....She's probably right
best is still rooted stock rom without samsung bloated widgets, add my own tweaks (with init.d support).
no fc, no bugs (compared to custom roms), longest battery operating life (if dun play power hungry game like candy crush).
normal usage, ie. phone, messaging, listen to music n radio, battery at 50% after 2 days 10hrs. :good:
play power-hungry games (candy crush sage), last 3~4hrs.
edit:
charging was due to transferring of video clips when usb was plugged, ti also charge the phone.
anyway, it still is far better than buggy custom roms, ie. i have to charge my phone every day.

share with ppl whom want it.
rooted stock rom with superuser, busybox, root explorer and init.d support (do a search in xda forum) or a script manager.
remove all tweaks or enhancement apps, no need any.
i find tat most dont work becoz they r directed at non-existence, non-changeable, non-rewriteable or non-virtualise parameters.
a placebo effect(s) if u believe their tweaks really works or it works on benchmarking but severely lagging in real life usage or at random, sometime good and sometime bad, unknown and uncertain.
i complied tweaks tat i find it works and re-direct parameters so it will work properly.
note: not for any other phone (not even gw custom roms), strictly for rooted stock rom gw only.
.
attached is rar (zipped two files), one is an add-on file for build, prop and a script file (these r not flash-able files).
unzip and copy to your phone sdcard.
add-on file, open build.prop.addon file, copy all texts and close.
open build.prop in /system and paste texts at the end of file, save file.
script file, either use init.d support, copy n paste script file to etc/init.d, change permission chown to root, shell
or use script manager to load at boot.
done, reboot.
note:
use it at your own risk, it's working great on my phone.
always do a nandroid backup, just in case u screw it up.
