[Q] Is my battery dead? Or is there another problem? - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey Guys,
Woke up this morning to my G2 out of battery life, due to getting home late and forgetting to charge it.
I plugged it in and turned it on, as I usually do in this situation. When it started up it, everything seemed fine until it got into the Rom, and it immediately powered itself off (not abruptly, it came on with this usual "powering off" message that happens when it runs out of battery life.
I assumed this was because I hadn't charged it enough. So I let it sit for a couple of hours on the charger. Tried it again after that and the same thing happened, and has been happening all day since then. The strange thing about this is that the Recovery and HBOOT seem to work fine, so it can't just be the battery that's causing this.
I wiped the phone, and installed a new rom. Still the problem persists. And I still have no issues going into Recovery. It's only the actual OS that doesn't work.
Any thoughts?

Have you done any undervolting?

Any undervolting wouldn't be present after a full wipe but you may not be getting a full wipe
Use a superwipe script and or fastboot wipe and try flashing a new ROM again

battery charging/draining too quickly

my battery was down to 11%, so i turned my phone off and charged it for about 60 seconds through USB and now that i turned it back on it says 47%! there's no way it could have charged that quickly. this is on cm 6.1.2
i flash a lot of different roms but wipe data, cache, and dalvik before each new one. i don't run any unusual apps that would drain my battery and i have tried wiping battery stats every once in a while. ive also tried charging techniques such as charge for 8hrs, charge for another hour, etc. and nothing seems to work. my battery will drain in about 4 hours of moderate use (just web browsing and google talk while watching TV). im in an okay signal area, not using any 4g - happens with any rom.
this is a launch day evo battery but the actual phone (was 002) is replaced with my current 003 refurb.
im gonna try to wipe the whole sdcard and start from complete scratch.

i had this problem and when i checked to see what all was running i saw Google Maps was running... I didnt turn it on either but with a force stop and reboot im back to normal.
wiped sdcard completely, repartitioned, flashed latest cm 7 nightly, used for a while, charged to 50%, unplugged and in 20 minutes went from 50% down to 31%. had the same sort of behavior before on all roms. just display, cell standby, and android system using battery - not much else. maybe i need a new battery?

[Q] Normal Stability?

Hello all. Ever since I got my EVO, I've been experiencing random restarts, even before I was rooted. Right now, I am running CM7.1 and Tiamat from kernel manager, and I probably have to do about 8 restarts and 5 battery pulls a day, no matter how often I use the phone. For instance, today I woke up and had to do a battery pull because the screen would not turn on. The light was also still orange despite the battery being fully charged. I unplugged it at about 8 in the morning and by 10 with no use, I had to pull the battery again because the screen was frozen off once again. Once I got it back on, the battery was down to 80%. I tried using it and half the apps would force close immediately, so I restarted... You get the picture. Some roms have been better than others, and kernels don't seem to make any difference, and I figured it was about normal. Then, I installed what is supposed to be a really buggy CM7 on my touchpad, and have only had to restart it once in the past 2 days, which makes me question how stable my phone actually should be. Does it seem like I should take it in to sprint, or is my experience about normal?
I also never overclock because of my already poor battery life and have tried underclocking, but don't see any noticible difference
bump. should I post somewhere else?
Run an RUU but stay s-off for the moment and see if the problem persists. If your phone begins working properly, then you can flash a recovery and flash whatever rom you want - but don't restore your backup. I'd start totally fresh if RUUing fixes your problems, don't restore your apps and data, just download them from the Market as you need them.
If the RUU doesn't help and the problem continues, take it in to Sprint. It's up to you if you want to s-on before taking it in - I've never heard of anyone getting problems from Sprint with s-off but without root, but I think it's a general rule to do so.
I hope everything works out for you!

I have heard and seen on here many times that random reboots are caused by battery problems, and bad software installs. Try calibrating the battery, also use battery monitor widget to see what ur batt temps are. Then reinstall all your apps, do not restore them then see if that helps.

I'll try an RUU when I get enough time to do some thorough testing. I have reinstalled everything directly from the market multiple times since I've had the phone, and also have used a total of four batteries with no change in behavior. I Will try the RUU soon though. Thanks for the replies

[Q] cant calibrate battery (?)

Hello.
I have a little problem. My phone keeps shutting down at 17%. Ive tried everything. Recalibrating via apps. Recalibrating using "wipe battery stats ". Tried every single tutorial. Wiped cache. Wiped dalvik. Did a full wipe and the problem still remains. Im using cm nightlies and I didnt have this problem before I installed 262 but when I switched back to older versions or the cm7 i couldnt get rid of the problem . Im currently using euroskanks nightlies. Any tips?
THANKS.

Try this calibration-guide:

You could do the calibration Matdroid suggested, if that didn't worked out well for you then just give yourself a mental note that 17% = dead battery.
My battery goes down at 15% and I lived with that fact. As long as I get my normal battery runtime I am used to, Im not bothered by it. Saved me all the trouble fixing something that'll eventually happen again. :-D

Powering off by itself

My Note 2 has suddenly started shutting off by itself. It started right after a charging glitch. I loaded up a new kernel and was charging the phone up. At almost full charge it went into download mode. It took a few battery pulls to get it back into recovery where I wiped caches and rebooted. Since then it shuts off by itself every hour or so. I full wiped and re flashed the rom with its stock kernel and the problem is still there.
Any ideas? Hardware issue?

[Q] Rom/Kernel issue OR Battery?

Hi all
After sitting with my stock SGS4 (i9505) for a few months I decided to root (as i had my N7000 and HTC Desire).
About the same time as this my phone began turning off seemingly randomly. At first i thought this may be a ROM/Kernel issue but I have tried a couple including Stock(rooted), Carbon and the GooglePlay Rom. The same thing happens for all of them.
Once off, the phone boots to splash screen then turns off. This cycles. I remove the battery and the phone will turn on, sometimes showing a SIGNIFICANT apparent drop in battery (90% reduces to 3% during this single on/off cycle). A quick charge and restart will often cause the rebooted phone to read the battery at 90% again.
The battery does appear slightly swollen and i'm curious if anyone could shed any light on:
1) does this seem a battery / firmware issue and
2) any suggestions?
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer!
Currently: GooglePlay Rom 4.2.2 PhilZTouch Recovery
Regards
Warnoceros
If you're saying the battery is "swollen" it probably is a battery issue IMO. Especially if you're having problems on every ROM you've tried.
Have you tried going back to stock to see if it's still happening?
Hi
Thanks for replying. I'm downloading stock now so will report in the morning.

Hi,
So, went back to stock (binary counter has moved up unfortunately - didnt read into that before hand). Was still rebooting. Have replaced battery and this seems to have done the trick for the time being. I noticed that the unit did not reset until my google accout restored apps to the phone so there is still a chance it was a bad app i suppose.
Most likely the battery though
Thanks
