Best External Hard Drive/Flash Drive for One? - One (M7) Accessories

I'm looking for something very mobile, rugged, fast, awesome, with 64g to 1t of storage. Any good recommendations? I would prefer a small, slick flash drive type device, without the cord or bulkiness of the many I 've researched. Ideas?

As above, I also bought one for my M7 as 32gb just wasn't enough. Easy to lose but comes with a keychain. I managed to lose the cap after a few days (as with most USB sticks I've had).

External Hard Drives

I've been looking at reviews for external hard drives for about an hour now and I can't decide what brand or specific one is the most reliable. I just want one that'll last for at least two years. Size - 500MB to 1TB.
So if someone has experience with these, please give me your opinions.
And if this isn't I'm the right place, I'm sorry.

the best brands nowadays are WD and samsung.
buy a internal HDD and a cheap external case, you will save money.
Oh wow I didn't know you could do that, I'll look into it.
Thank you very much.

I currently have a seagate 1TB ext. that I have owned for almost 3 years now and no issues. I also have a Thermaltake dual bay sata hdd apparatus that connects via usb or esata. Then I have a 2.5" sata silicone sleeve/adapter for laptop sized HDD's Works good too.

=S .. Are you sure?
I have a seagate 2TB, But not cheap, Wom,I'm so crazy
Hard drive pricess have gone up after the earthquake and tsunami in Japan and alot of hard drives on the market right now are older models of the hard drives because they are straggling to resume making of current/updated drives. I always do what the people above have done, buy an internal drive with a cheap enclosure. Samsung is the best brand I have always used, the 103sj is the best performance to price ratio drive i've seen the past year. I also always partition my drives with more the one partition.

Sure, buy a good internal WD and a 3"5 case, you will save money
go for WD green line 2TB with a power supply. it's a bit heavy but it's durable as hell and it's about 100€
I have a 500gb Toshiba external, its compact and has been very reliable.
An SSD is overkill for external storage. Just stick with a mechanical hard drive
I personally recommend Samsung drives first, then Seagate, then Western Digital. WDs have been the least reliable for me personally, although a lot swear by them.
And definitely get a case and drive separately if you know how to use a screwdriver. You'll save a few quid!
Samsung, Western Digital and Seagate are good HDD brands

It's true, but when I was solving same question, I wasn't lucky. I've tried 2 or 3 cases and all of them were somehow buggy. So you have to search carefully for the people's opinions about selected model for not to loose your data.
Now I have WD Passport @ USB 3
WD or Seagate, the only samsung i had was a bit laggy and sometime it disconnect from the computer, without me doing anything. It was a 2,5" 256GB but i do not remember the fabric code.

Good external storage options?

As I'm sure many of you feel, 16GB isn't really enough for me. I was wondering if there are any cases with built-in USB storage which could be mounted on the Galaxy Nexus. I could get an adaptor and plug in a USB stick, but I want something I can easily take with me everywhere. Anyone know of anything like this?

Best thing would be is a USB OTG. But you would need root access.
It's just a cable, not much more to carry I guess.
And you'll want the USB stick mount app (free) to get access to that memory stick.
Honestly, nothing is is going to be easier, smaller or lighter to carry around than a USB stick and a short adapter. I use it. What else did you have in mind?
Actually, why not use dropbox? or something similar.
all your music stored on google music would save a few gigs.
important things or whatever in a dropbox.

Your situation is easily fixed by cloud storage

Cloud storage is good and all, but only practical if you have a data plan. Some people, like me, rock their GNex on voice and Wifi only, and do not have a data plan (too expensive, I'm a student). Therefore, cloud storage would only work for things that I would not need to have on hand all the time (or you would need Wifi all the time). However, that being said, I have so far never had to use more than half of the 16gb on my nexus.
Consider investing in a Seagate GoFlex Satellite. Works with all phones, holds 500GB, and won't eat up your phone battery as much as a USB drive.

Samsung kills their own keyboard docks for tablets

So thats why we never got note 10.1 keyboard in US.
I still fancied the dock....

I really wanted a transformer style dock, but using the oem cover to make it so that you can type comfortably works well.

I agree. This 30 pin connector, proprietary charging, no HDMI, coupled with no JB 4.2 so no miracast, this is one disconnected, connected, wired and shackled but supposedly mobile device.
I've only had it for three weeks and I miss a more connected, but liberated device.
It's frustrating cause this could be soooooo good.

Hdmi....would never use it....what to shackle it up to my tv? Pretty sure micro USB is not feasible for 2 amp charging. This baby already is soooooo good.

my playbook, and my note 2 use 2 amp chargers. I just lucked or on the 30 pin connector because I had a mini usb to 30 pin connector for my tab 2 7.0, and an extra cable.
The tf300 was a dream to type on with the dock, but honestly, my note 10.1 kicks the crap out of it. The oem cover works great, with the exception of a lot of e's that come out 3.

I had no idea that this was happening.
It would be awesome if Samsung could come up with a transformer-esque type of keyboard/cover, or even a touch-cover like the Surface.
It makes the idea of a "Note netbook/laptop" a good one, but with two separated accessories i.e. stand + bluetooth keyboard, that idea is gone.
Shame :/
The tablet must be a tablet, not a computer if you want a computer buy it separately. A tablet is made for commands through touchscreen, if you want to have a tablet with dock keyboard buy a tablet-pc ( i own one..)

Eh? I can find the Samsung connector (which is actually a standard called "PDMI") just about anywhere (at least in the States), I've got more charger options now than i had with my Moto Xoom, especially if you buy one of these. HDMI and AllShare Cast work on my device, too.
I've used 4.2 and we're not really missing much useful save the multi-user feature.
I have 4 BT Keyboards, including one with a built-in stick mouse and a cover that folks to make a stand; the combo (which is light enough I carry it around in a case with my Note) gives me everything I could get with the KB dock except maybe charging and it's apparently more portable as well.
I'd say we're pretty well-connected
A charging keyboard dock would have been bad ass.

seriously though, the battery life on the note 10 is pretty good, I would like the extra peripherals, like the full size sd and usb ports on the transformer docks.

What I want is to travel without two toons of devices
Just one which does anything I need. And a tablet with (a good) keyboard can do that.

This. I've been able to travel with only my tablet (on certain business trips even) and have most of what i'd needed to do be accessible that way.
I went to verizon yesterday & saw a Samsung branded Keyboard dock for the Tab10.1. I tried it with the display model Tab 2 10.1 & it fit. I thought that the Tab 210.1 & the Note 10.1 were the same size. I was gutted to find it was not. It works if you pull out the plastic guide/holder, but then it is kind of flimsy in there. Bummer.
Wasnt there a rumor somewhere that one of Samsungs next tablets was going to be transformer-esque? I could have sworn I read something a few months ago about it.

Well, with the GNote 10.1 LTE coming to VZ soon, I'd expect they'd be getting accessories there, too (and likely to be hugely overpriced), so I'd come back again a little while after the GNote's available in VZ stores.
Tempted to grab one off ebay. What can I say, sometimes I get typity.

That sounds sort of narrow-minded in my opinion. Why can't a tablet be both or why can't a computer be a tablet? For an artist like me, I would love the opportunity if tablets got powerful enough to rival their notebook counterparts and offered a desktop view as well as for easy access with a keyboard and trackpad.
With the move of ultrabooks , especially the Surface Pro, converging into tablet territory with full features, one must consider that to be a blessing than a curse. Think about it in this way: Would you carry a radio, cd player , portable DVD player with TV, game system and an ereader just to be able to use them, or would you opt for the simpler solution of an all in one deal? That is the number one reason why the iPod took off: portability. Not only can you get a radio, but a music player and now video, games and reading.
It gets roughly cumbersome to carry every single CD, DVD ,game cart/disc in addition to the hardware , let alone the books for brief reading in commutes in comparison to an all out deal.
For the average consumer and artist, such things are so hard to get that it is pushed towards the rich ,but now similar tech now exists that has the potential to allow for maximal power and capability and the ability to change form factors on the fly. Why should people have to be inconvenienced to buying several different products that can be brought under one device when it can be deducted into one singular product that is amazing and does it all , broadly speaking?
If we went by this flawed logic an mp3 player must play music only, but no radio , thus how would iPods and whatnot be popular if they didn't serve multiple functions simply?

Thanks.....I think. Glad to hear about the PDMI. Just have to figure out how to use it.
What I was trying too say is everything is an add on so my kit ends up being as bulky as my ultrabook and far more prone to losing some piece that makes the whole thing work. my last tablet logged about 100k+/- frequent flyer miles. Using one power brick with one power end, one multi headed usb, one multi headed hdmi, one universal battery charger brick fit neatly in an airplane amenity bag, and served two cameras, one phone and a tablet. Needed no OTG cable to get the CF card reader seen by the tablet. Because I have a GNex, I already have a data/sync switch on my usb cable.
The cameras are the hardest and heaviest to carry.
So far, I've had to add another amenity kit to add the adapters for the Note. And I still don't have a way of using it to run a projector or tv. My phone ends up doing that.

Just bought one, stock is running out everywhere.
Time to think about soldering a split cable data/charging, and if that works hdmi.
Hope it's as nice as said, but returning is always an option in NL.:good:

Want expandable storage? No problem!

One of the things that held me back from the nexus 4 was the fact there was no way to expand the memory. Thankfully they doubled availability in this one.. I still here even reviewers complaining the 32 should have been 64. I just found this article http://t.co/2mqKLd5RAo scandisk has a wireless flash card. So you can pretty much have as much storage as you want to buy! I up getting the nexus with 32 GB but with wireless card I'd be happy even with the 16 GB. Super stoked I have options to not be capped with the unexpandable memory
You can't use data while connected to this, though.
Neat but seems pretty cumbersome to use, not to mention not being able to use data. I have a knockoff meenova microsd reader that works beautifully for additional storage. Plug it in, transfer files, unplug.
Amazon.com: SanDisk Connect 32GB Wireless Flash Drivehttp://amzn.to/16JKWee
I don't think I would have a use for this especially at $60. Cool idea though.

Right now i have a goflex satellite 500gb that i can connect to wirelessly but also connects to my wifi. It's good for when i'm mobile but plan on staying in one location for a while like a plane or doctor's waiting room but yeah I agree those meenova like devices are much more convenient.

I'd rather use something like this: http://www.2leef.com/store/product/bridge/

Meenova microSD card reader for Nexus 5

So I got one of the Meenova microSD card readers, and I am finding it works pretty well. I have a 16GB Nexus 5 so don't really have alot of room for media, and I have a very large offline collection of video and music files, and needed some way to use them with the phone without using up my app space. The Meenova fit the bill.
The unit comes with a USB interface that essentially turns your microSD into a USB flash drive. It also comes with a keychain latch so that you can keep the unit on your keychain, and simply pop it in when you need it. It is quite small and doesn't protrude to the point that the phone is difficult to handle. Much better than an OTG with a cable.
I am using Nexus Media Importer since I am not rooted, and am using a 32GB card in it. The website says that if you are rooted you can use StickMount and access SDXC 64GB cards. My 64GB card wouldn't work with Nexus Media Importer as is, as it only supports FAT32 and not exFAT. That's a software issue, though, not a hardware issue.
This little unit solves a big problem for me and gives me at least a reasonably sized media library on the go that I can't have due to the phone's limitations. I can now carry a dozen or so HD movies along with a pretty decent music library and not eat into the phone's storage at all. For the price you can't lose; it is possibly the best $12 I ever spent.
http://www.meenova.com/
already 2 threads about it here and here
Yup, I have one and it's pretty awesome. It works on my Moto X natively, but works just fine with stickmount on my N5. One of the best accessories I've ever bought.
Yeah there's already two threads about this. But just so you know you can format the 64 gb as FAT32 and according to other people that works.
