It should automatically prompt you to view internal and external sd cards on your pc. Are you rooted?

i have this problem on XP sometimes too, even with the drivers installed.
Try changing it from MTP to PTP. Let the computer find it again, then switch it back to MTP. Works for me every time

hi chrisram... it doesnt prompt me for anything. i installed the snapdragon toolkit. i got xp and when i go into windows explorer, i see files on the phone, but not on the sd card. i tried also to install samsung driver 1.4.6.0 and i get a "MTP was not installed" error. and on the phone i get a pop up saying that i need windows media player 10 or higher, which i have installed.
and to answer your question, i am not rooted. DO I HAVE TO BE ROOTED TO VIEW FILES ON THE SD CARD ON MY PC VIA USB? please help because i'm on the verge on stomping on this galaxy s3. thanks,
You don't need root to view files in your phone. Did you put an SD card in there?

i seriously dont want to use airdroid.. i need to move heavy files and i dont want to spend years by my PC waiting for my phone to finish transferring files over the air.. i want to be able to see my sd card via usb.
thanks for the encouragement.. i know i'll get a solution with your help..
Fair enough. What if you do install windows media player 11 and see what that does?
Sent from my SGH-T999
Um the sdcard can only write at about say max 80Mbps sustained. WLAN will be fast enough at 40.. what is USB2.0?
Anyways if you are putting lots of files, leave them on external, and don't have to worry about copying again. No good reason to have then on sdcard vs external.
You can just copy to ext then use any file mgr program to copy it using the phone.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
I use N so it's 100mbps and fast enough to not notice any difference. I'm guessing your problem is that XP is old as F. A simple solution is to just plug the sd card into your computer. But as it was pointed out the sd card is slower than wifi so it really doesn't matter.
Oh and I'd just like to point out you could have moved the files 10000 times by now. With airdroid you can move around the house while files are transferring. So you can relax and still use the phone instead of being tethered to the computer. And if you have splashtop you'd never even have to touch your PC.
Put Linux on a flash drive and use that?
Hello,
Today I was trying to copy some files to my Xperia S via USB from my WinXP PC. When trying to copy the files, I got the message "the device has either stopped responding or has been disconnected" with the option to skip or cancel. This happened several times, and I plugged and unplugged the cable between tries.
After giving it up, I went to the phone and found out that all my files were gone. The folders disappeared and I can't find any pictures or media files (as well as any of the files that existed before - and I have show hidden files enabled in Android File Manager app). In Settings > Storage > Internal it says that I have 25 GB free (when I should have only 2 or 3 GBs left). The current folder structure viewable in the app is probably the folders for apps that after restart, recreated the folders.
However, if I connect to PC again, I can see the old folder structure in Internal Storage and the listing of the files inside it (the photos, etc). If I try to copy inside the SDCARD or to the PC I get the same message "the device has either stopped responding or has been disconnected" and I can't open any kind of file.
I think the data is still in the SD Card, but not accessible anymore. Has anyone experienced this before and can help me?
Thanks,
andré

I too have this problem with my Game ROMs folder with my SNES and Genesis games. I'll run the emulator and then when I go to find a game the folder has disappeared. I have them saved on my PC so I just copy it over but an actual solution would be nice. My phone is rooted and ROMed.
Oh and I tried Titanium Backups but they sometimes disappear as well. I've never had that app work for me anyways always freezes and the backup is never restored.
It seems to me large folders and files not involved in the phones dedicated folder structure seem to disappear.
The best thing for you to do would be to root your phone and try the SD card mounting app which mounts the SD card in mass storage mode. MTP mode always gives such problem so and is unreliable..

Exactly. MTP has lots of problem.
I don't understand why Android use it.
The PC shows my device and my external and internal drives.
If I browse through my external or internal sdcard, it shows my folders and the files in them. If I try to paste something in either storage, it tries to move the file for like 3 minutes then it gives me the message that my device might not be able to view or play the file. If I tell it to move it anyway, it gives me a message saying that it can't copy it and also "My device might be unresponsive or disconnected". I tried to paste a song as well but it denied my request saying how "the device doesn't support .mp3 files" which can't be right since I did it before.
Also, if I go to recovery and try to mount it, the pc doesn't show any drives for it.
I thought it might of been a hardware id issue so I followed this method found here but it didn't help me. I have version 1.4.6.0 of the samsung usb drivers installed and I have Kies installed as well. I'm running the Anthrax Kernel w/ Jellybomb v. 14.
I've tried looking at other threads but I've had no luck with them. I would be grateful if someone could help me
Edit- I ran a troubleshoot program on the device manager for windows and it said it was a driver problem. I clicked the box for more info and it said the MTP USB Device failed to install. If i reconnect the usb cable, it installs fine on MTP mode. On PTP Mode, it fails to install. Regardless, I'm still not able to paste anything to the internal or external memory. Another strange occurence that I found out was that I waited like 10 minutes and tried to copy my files to the internal storage, and it worked! But, I tried copying the same files to the external right after that and it gave me "the device has either stopped responding or is disconnected" error.
Noob here, but I have a similar issue. Just watched an XDA video discussing the problem. ... MTP is the issue. It works differently than mass usb storage. I'll try to find the thread again and post the link.

Interesting, the video helps explain it clearly. I'm wondering if it's a ROM issue though. I was gonna try switching ROMs...maybe even do a factory reset if I get a free day.

It has to do with how TW handle the PC connection when you plug it in, so its only specific to stock or stock based
AOSP always has and will allow you to mount as a drive
I'm running JellyBomb v14 , and do not have that issue. One thing you may want to try is reformatting your SD Card. Ran into the same issue on a friends device. Turned out it was his SD Card. You can use sd formatter. It works quite well, and it's free.

You could try to install Kies, it comes with samsung usb drivers. Then you can uninstall it and the drivers will remain.
Also, microsoft mtp drivers are included with the latest media player. Maybe update that.

Did you ever format the SD Card? What I mean is actually pulling the SD Card out of the Device, and formatting it. Copy your stuff to the Desktop. Then format the SD Card. You can use SD Formatter as I suggested before.
I've formatted the ext sd. Tried different cables. Tried connecting in download mode. Nothing works. Right now I'm just pulling the sd and using a adapter for the pc to transfer data, it's a pain, but faster than Wi-Fi....

Do you have an SD Card adapter? If so, look on the left side of it. There should be a little tap. When insert your Micro SD Card in make sure the tap is all the way up. Up is unlocked on most SD Cards.

I tried various methods to resolve this copying problem (settings, drivers, cables, different USB ports etc.). Eventually I gave up and tried the WifiDroid and AirDroid style apps to transfer files reliably. They worked without error but were clunky to use. Especially if you wanted to copy multiple folders at once and still use the phone for other tasks. The best product I found to do this was Solid Explorer on the Play store. Its very easy to create a FTP connection between PC and phone and then simply to drag/drop multiple files/folders in the traditional Windows manner. Better still I can walk around at home listening to music or a book on the phone while the files copy in the background. Quick, reliable and no annoying file copy errors.
Everytime I plug in my phone I get this message about hardware ID not recognized. I have to reinstall usb drivers each time this happens..Does anyone know how to fix this issue? I running the synergy rom. Computer is Win7
it's a Windows issue. Samsung or Microsoft have the wrong drivers on Microsoft's servers.
You can try installing the KIES drivers for windows from Samsung's site. Personally, I just don't install Samsung drivers. Windows will install enough drivers that you can access the phone and SD card. You just won't have access for ADB. Here's a thread I did on it explaining the process: XDA linky

However it transfers god awfully slow and if the file is a ccertain size or will say it stopped copying.
For instance when I copy over Isi and cso format files, For the PSP emulator.
Which means I have to take out the SD card inserted into a card reader then put it into my computer then transfer the files and then put it back into my phone which is a nuisance

I don't doubt what you're saying. If you checked out the thread, it was a limited solution. But for most, it was good enough to move files back and forth fine. May not be the fastest, but it was faster than the plug and plug the USB cord, or uninstall and reinstall the Samssung or other drivers.
I've tried most of what other suggested, install previous samsung drivers while disconnected from the internet, installing KIES drivers through Samsungs site, and so forth. Some worked better, but all eventually failed fairly quickly; I think I got two days with the KIES drivers.
The biggest problem with the solution is the lack of ADB. Being able to use ADB with the GN2 may not be used often by some, but it's a life saver when used.
The file system is whack!
Why?
Try this very simple test.
Create a new folder and create some files to put in there.
Use a USB cable and plug it into your laptop.
Open your phone.
Where is your new folder and files?
But wait, if you open up ES File Explorer on the phone, everything is there?
Okay, reboot your phone.
Then, plug it into your laptop again.
Okay, now everything is there.
It's like you have to reboot your Nexus device in order to allow your laptop to see a refresh of the storage memory.
This is why removable memory is the way to go.
I just use Filezilla and ftpserver from the play store. Easy and fast. I'll never plug my phone into the computer again to transfer files.
use a good file explorer that does refresh the storage index...try solid explorer..problem solved
every change made by solid explorer to the file system is notified to the android media store index, try to repeat your steps with solid explorer
(that happens to every new phone out there that use MTP over mass storage file transfer, about 90% of new smartphone, even phone with removable storage use MTP today )
Wires are much too cumbersome. I use ES file manager to move files to/from my tablets/PC/dropbox/Box.com. Copy and paste between any and all of those easier than using a full desktop PC. No need to search for a wire. Or even be in the same room as your PC. Problem solved.

But, the nice thing about removable storage is that it's easy to pop out the memory card and put it into your laptop. I only wish that laptop makers would put a micro SD card slot into laptops so I don't have to keep my adapter in there.
Plus, it copies way faster that way, in my experience. Also, Windows Explorer treats it like storage device, instead of some weird "thing" with the MTP method, ie, Teracopy never works with MTP.
i use root explorer and never had that issue. i created folder thru root explorer and i plugged into my laptop and i was able to view folder. but i got to say when i first got my gnex i was scared because of not having a removable sd card. but when i did have my droid X my sd card did fail, but luckily i backed everything up to my laptop before it actually failed.

This is not a Galaxy 'Nexus' problem, it's an Android thing, its MTP.
Any app that can trigger a media scan should cure that without having to reboot.
I've been using filezilla on my pc to push files to my phone for awhile though and it is much more convenient. USB transfer is slow and those cords always break on me >.<
That's no reason to ditch the galaxy nexus though. Maybe the terrible screen, poor placement of headphone jack, and battery life though... Lol

So, I think it's just a problem linked to your Gnex. When I plug mine, I always see it on my pc like a removal memory.. And this should happen if you are rooted or not, it doesn't depend on it.

18 months of updates doesn't warrant buying a nexus anymore, I just buy a better hardware non nexus phone an install the latest google stock on it using a custom rom.

Just download latest USB drivers zip
