External SD Card limitations of TW KitKat - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

The other threads cover the installation and issues with respect to it and other general discussion, but I am most concerned with this one issue. The limitations on using the External SD card and the ability or inability of developers to work around it could determine if it is worthwhile to update or not with the official based firmware.
An example is currently being able to have large (almost 2 gb) GPS map files relocated from internal SD to external SD with build prop changes - will that even be possible with official KitKat?
I would like to see users post their results in this area alone here, Otherwise they will be spread all over the other threads. I have not flashed it yet due to installation issues, but when they are sorted out, this one problem are may still make it not worth the effort.
Update - it looks like there may be an easy fix:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2607215
If that does not work as-is on M919 - probably will be one soon that does.

If you edit platform.xml per this post it'll fix Titanium Backup (and I suspect any other program which has issues writing to the extSD):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2617921
I prefer to edit the files when I can as it helps me learn a little about Android, I can be certain of what's happening and I can revert by removing the edits or restoring a backup of the file.

Thanks - looks the same as option two in my link above.
Makes me wonder if it is that easy, what ll the fuss is all about (references to a major developer organizing a majot campaign to blast Google, etc.)
Again - as US TMo users get the new OTA going - please post your experiences with respect to the external SD.

Here's an example of why this is a pain. I'm on the new 4.4.2 TW build and I have uTorrent installed. Before any downloads would go to my 64gb ultra microSDXC card. It was perfect since I have ample space. Now, I'm no longer allowed to save to extSDCard and every new download gets an error. The fix was setting the download location to the download folder on the internal storage, which Kit Katy now recognizes as External primary. It doesn't say it but the coding dictates that no app can write to the secondary external data source (your microsd) outside of the folder it created during install. This means you get app updates and IAP and that's pretty much it as far as SD cards are concerned.
Now my torrents go to my internal storage which only has about 2gbs left instead of my 64gb with 17gb free. Why don't I just use a file manager to move the files you ask? Because they cannot write to external storage as mentioned before. Really not getting the logic here Google.

This issue has been helped but not entirely fixed with the preceding fixes. However, working pretty good now overall. Was able to switch download folder from internal to ExtSD in some apps (like Browser) but not in XDA app and torrent initially..
However, was able to move download folders and files over from internal to ExtSD OK.
Also, changed permissions on Browser, rebooted, and then was able to change download folder to externalSD. Ditto for uTorrent - downloading to ExtSD now also.

Probably not. You can try to get into a file editor and make the change, but this will most likely require root access.to do so.
I have not bothered to follow the rooting threads, as I only had to root when I first got the phone. so I don't know if there are any that will root without affecting the KNOX counter. If you are not KNOX'd - just root.

It does require Root to change that file.
As far as I know, currently there isn't a way to Root the stock 4.4.2 (NB4) without tripping the Knox flag in the bootloader. The old Saferoot method that worked with the MK2 version doesn't work with NB4.

Mostly Google. They want to push you to their cloud with this, just like their push to get you off using your credit cards on Wallet and to use their otherwise useless "Wallet" on their Wallet apk
Thank Samsung for KNOX though

MicroSD Card Issues

Hi, I have a problem with my patriot signature microsd 32gb on my 16gb Samsung Galaxy SIII which I use as a music and picture storage for my music player and camera
The phone is rooted and is running stock ROM and kernel
The problem:
1)when transferring music files while the sd card is in the phone, using a usb and explorer method of copying and pushing sometimes the write protected warning pops up, other times the file would copy but I could not find it in my music player/gallery, other times the file is present for a period of time but after a restart of my phone the file disappears.
NOTE: However, files that I have transferred using the microsd adapter and directly through the computer does not change at all.
2)On the default camera I have set up the external sd card as the default location for pictures, but when I take a picture sometimes the warning that "sd card cannot be located and default storage is changed back into phone"
3)On Android Commander when I try to push music files it always ends up as permission denied
4)When I try to copy music through the windows explorer this message pops up "the device has either stopped working or is not responding"
What I attempted:
I thought it was a formatting problem and so I tried to format the sd card using both my phone and pc into the phone's desired FAT32 format,
but the problem persists.
I have also inserted the sd card into the adapter and put the write protected switch up thinking it was a permissions problem
Is it a faulty card? or am I doing something wrong?
Additional Note:
1)I have both ES file explorer and Root explorer and when I attempt to change the permission on my external sd card which usually appears in ES file explorer as "rwx-rwx-r(blank)x" it always fails
2)When opening the gallery and trying to view some of the photos saved in the external sd card, it would appears as unable to load and just a black screen.
3)I also export playlists from itunes in m3u format and puts it in a playlist folder in the sd card but it would never appear when I try to see it in a file explorer, although using poweramp I can import the list, but the old ones that I have placed on the card is also present unable to find them or delete them in either the phone or the pc
I have really became desperate trying to solve this problem
Please help me
Try reformatting as exFat. Also I don't think you can change the permissions on the entire sdcard.
It could also be that the phone connects using MTP. There's an app here on xda called sgs3 easy ums. It will mount the card as a UMS device. Try transferring that way.
I think the sgs3 was intended to use the exFat format though.

I have a problem with my card right now for my SDS3 (see sig) but my problem is completely different from yours. Hope that helps solve your problem.

That's weird. If it doesn't pick up your card then the problem might be more serious than you think. But how can you see the contents and be able to format it yet utilities like Easus and SDFormatter can't see the drive? Did you try disconnecting all USB flash drives, your phone or other devices connected to your computer first? Check explorer and see to it that your card is the only one connected with a drive letter. Go to SDFormatter, hit refresh and make sure the drive letter is chosen.
SDFormatter just fixed the problem I was having.
You said you were rooted stock. Did you do any debloating or anything else to it. I doubt its the case but maybe something needed was accidentally removed.
Have you tried running fix permissions in recovery or TiB?
Also, how did you root? Was it recent and did the card function properly before? If you used odin to flash a rooted fw, maybe it was a bad download?
If all else fails, you could try reflashing the full stock fw with Odin.

1)I didn't do any debloating for my phone, and how do you run fix permissions in recovery? or TiB?
2)I root my phone by following this guide "How to Root U.S. and Canada Galaxy S3 SGH-T999/SGH-I747/SPH-L710! [Fail-Proof][Noob-Proof][U.S. Cellular]" using odin
3)So by reflashing the full stock fw do you mean I need to factory reset? or Is it possible to download the stock fw somewhere?
Sorry I am new to android, so please bear with me
Sorry, coulda sworn you could run fix permissions in Titanium....
You should be able to do this in cwm or twrp recovery. May be in the advanced menu. You can install the recovery from Rom or Goo Manager app.
Factory reset wipes all user data taking you back to an out of the box state.
You can get a pre rooted version of the FW from here.

This is the original LE6 version though, if you want the updated LH2 version give me a few min to get the link for you.
Follow directions in that thread to flash with Odin.

I had a patriot 16gb class 10.. when it works.. it's awesome should be called class 15 or something lol. However there were three times it randomly corrupts.. lost all my pictures and crap. A format usually fixes it. After the second time... i learned to put my photos to default internal memory. The third time i was no longer able to format it... couldn't move files in or out but i can open them?! I went with the high amount of 5 star reviews but should've listened to them 1-2 star reviews. They don't do well with phones. And your problem is a problem that occurred to me every now and then. Remember to back up your card frequently before it crashes!

ah, problem
so I tried followed the link and the steps to flash the fw
but I am encountering this problem of when odin is done and the phone is restarting the "process android.process.acore has stopped" along with touchwiz and poweramp.
I reflashed twice and the problem remains
I even cleared dalvik cache and regular cache and fixed permissions with cwm and rebooted but it still did not fix the problem
Do I have to factory reset now?
:crying:
I can't remember which app it is or if this is the one requiring factory reset. Can you boot and get to settings > app manager? If so clear data on google services framework. Maube also touchwiz home. (Can't remember for sure)
You could also try using the built in file manager in twrp. Go to /data/data and look for those folders and delete them. May not work but worth a try.

ya thanks for the advice but it didn't work
From what I can tell the only solution now is to do a factory reset
anyways so why did the fw not work for me?
i even made sure i downloaded the correct wind one
at least now maybe with the factory fw i can make sure the external sd card works?
so factory reset is done
external sd card still does not want to work via "my file" folder creation
I don't know is it broken? I would like to try another sd card but I need to find one
although I did test it with h2testw and no error message popped up.
It wrote and verified fine.
Sometimes left over data can cause problems with a newly flashed system. Odin didn't wipe your apps or data and something was left behind that conflicted with setup or something like that. Sorry it came down to that man.
Ive heard a few times over the past couple years of sdcards working fine in one device but not at all in another. It seems rare and I'm not sure why it happens, but it can.
Only way to know for sure is to borrow a known good sdcard and try it. If it also doesn't work then its most likely a problem with the phone. If it works then you probably need to replace the card. Maybe take it to the store where you got it and let them try. That way if it doesn't work you have a witness that can note your account of the issue.

Android 4.2.x File Structure Thread

Hey Guys,
So After all of the recent questions and concerns I have seen and answered, I have decided to make a thread to help users understand the new file structure of android 4.2.x. I hope this will help those of you with questions and concerns and make for a smoother transition from 4.1.x and touch wiz roms.
I will break this into three categories........
First I will explain what the file system is and why it is present and how it affects you......
Second is if you haven't yet but are planning on making the jump to 4.2.x.
Third will be if you have already made the jump without doing your homework. (For those of you wondering where your files are, wondering why your sd card was formatted, or cant find your recovery backups..... This section is for you!!)
Section 1.)
What is the new file system and what the hell is this /0 folder?
With Android 4.2, Google introduced multiple users as a new feature. In order to accommodate multiple users, Google is now giving each user their own folder for storage. What happens is 4.2 uses an emulator to make different users and uses the /0 folder as the default users storage on the sd card. It doesn't recognize anything on the root of the sd card only whats in /0. To support multi-user capabilities this will be the norm... for each user, there will be a sequentially numbered folder in /data/media (/data/media/0, /data/media/1)...
And for each user, within Android, this will be symlinked to /sdcard & /storage/sdcard0... for user 1, /sdcard = /storage/sdcard0 = /data/media/0... for user 2, /sdcard = /storage/sdcard0 = /data/media/0...
These are emulated storage points... /data/media/0 = /storage/emulated/0, /data/media/1 = /storage/emulated/1
Without root access, each user will just see /sdcard/ and will not be able to access the other emulated storage points...
In the recovery mode, however, /sdcard is mapped to /data/media which is why you need to navigate to the "0" folder to see your files!
So in order to access your internal storage files they will be in data/media/0. So for example to access the backup location In titanium backup after you flash navigate to data/media/0/TitaniumBackup. (Thanks to ktetreault)
That being said, If you already flashed a 4.2 rom without preparation, your files aren't lost they are just inaccessible they are just not in the proper place for 4.2 to see them.
So now that we have all the technical stuff out of the way...... Lets get into how to either prevent or fix this issue.
Section 2.)
Preparing to flash a 4.2 rom from a touch wiz rom or an aosp 4.1.x based rom.
Okay, so you have touch wiz or aosp 4.1.x of some sort and your ready to try out the goodness of 4.2?
First backup your ext sd card to your pc or if a pc is unavailable (and your willing to take a risk) use a file explorer on your phone such as Es file explorer from the market to transfer the contents of the ext sd card to your internal sd card. I highly suggest avoiding using the phone as some hiccups can occur. I have done it successfully myself but have heard others who have lost their files during transfer because they left the app while it was transferring. If you do use this method DO NOT LEAVE THE APP UNTIL THE FILE TRANSFER IS COMPLETE.
Second Format your ext sd card so we have a clean slate to work with as this will help tremendously to avoid any headaches.
Third Install the latest recovery of your choice. The reason for this is that the older recoveries are not updated for 4.2 and will continuously create a new /0 folder every time you flash a new rom. Follow the instructions to install in the applicable thread.
Thanks to naddict for posting the links.... These are all flashable zips thru recovery
TWRP 2.4.1.0 - http://d-h.st/9cL
CWM 6.0.2.3 - http://d-h.st/jbT
CWM Touch 6.0.2.3 - http://d-h.st/8A9
Fourth Flash the 4.2 rom of your choosing per the instructions of the developers OP in their thread.
Set your phone up as usual and then restore the files from your backup on your pc or move them back from the internal sd card using es file explorer again. Keep in mind that the /0 folder is your new sd card storage. Now you are good to go and enjoy the new features and benefits of 4.2 and not have to search for your files :good:
Section 3.)
Okay so you got overly excited and flashed a 4.2 rom........ OMG!!! All my files are gone!!!! I can't restore any backups and all my precious files have disappeared!! Why was my sd card formatted?????
Relax.... Your files didn't go any where they are exactly how you left them you just can't see them.....
I will walk you thru 4 easy steps to get your files back and put you back on track.
First Make sure you have the latest recovery of your choice. If needed refer to the links posted in section 1. If you don't do this you will see a duplicate /0 folder created every time you flash a new 4.2 rom.
Second You won't be able to find your backups thru recovery. The easiest method I found is to download any touch wiz rom. Wipe your phone completely and then flash the touch wiz rom you downloaded. Reboot and go thru the setup and what not.
Third Now install es file explorer or the app of your choice. Next copy everything from the root of the sd card into the /0 folder that 4.2 had created oh so nicely for you.
Fourth Reboot into recovery and re-flash the 4.2 rom you began with. After going thru the initial rom setup you will see that are of your files are back intact and ready for you to access.
Hopefully this has helped those of you with questions and concerns about upgrading to 4.2.x. If i missed anything please feel free to let me know and ill include it here or address any further questions.

If i am currently on a 4.1 ROM and don't have an external sd(i only have the internal storage), will the new 4.2 file system affect me when i flash a 4.2 ROM?
So far i have backed up apps+data with titanium backup, and im ready to flash liquid smooth ROM using twrp. I just want to know if after flashing my internal storage contents will still be there and i will be able to restore apps with tb.

this was of great help
When I went to 4.2.1 I did not understand the file system change. I had to use my backup phone for 5 days before I finally got my SMSand MMS and Launcher Pro restored.
Then I wiped and flashed again and it created a new "0" directory. I have been afraid to do anything but dirty flash since.
This finally explains it all and I feel confident in wiping again.
Thank you so much.

ROM? If you flashed GAPPS, version? Are you able to download just random .apk's from the net and not Play Store? Have you tried using another app store like Amazon or Samsung?
Gonna try another store see how that works thxs

Not sure if you have solved this yet but I was also having a similiar problem when I first got my Note 2 some months ago. If this doesn't help or you have solved your issue disregard it, hopefully it may be helpful to others in the future looking up answers to this problem.
It seems some apps can be installed incorrectly / get corrupted and this error will always come about no matter how much free space you have. It sees the old data persisting in your device and tells you you have insufficient space.
You can solve the issue if this is the case by deleting any stray .odex files in /data/app <- (this is in the root of your phone) You will need root access and a app such as solid explorer or root explorer (I would recommend solid explorer). You can find the suspect files by looking for any files in here that end in .odex and have no icon (just a generic file icon). The rest of the good files will end in .apk and have their respective icons.

Accidentally wiped phone with recovery file under emulated SD card instead of actual

Oh boy, i did it now.
I made a backup of my sms and mms messages that i really need to recovery. My problem was that i was paying attention to which sd card it was on....i thought i had selected the actual SD card, but it turns out i was using the phone's internal SD.
I performed a factory reset and applied a much smaller rom, going from stock touchwiz 4.2.x to the 4.4.2 Google Play edition of KitKat. I feel that the file is still recoverable as the data area hasn't been overwritten, and it is very very important for me to get the messages back.
I have tried to install an app that enabled USB Mass Storage to let me use standard windows recovery methods to try to pull out the file, but i can't get it to be seen properly. I come to you guys for any assist:
Is there a way, through the ADB or otherwise, to recover a section of file and attempt to carve out the proper file from it? it was just a single zip file created, about 20-30mb in size.
thank you in advance!
By any chance could you have had a Gmail account set to auto backup your messages?

Aloha, and thanks for the response:
Nope, otherwise this probably wouldn't be as big of an issue.
Ok just checking lol

Anyone have anything? i could really use the assist here.
Look up any Unix/Linux commands to run in a terminal. You will prolly need to be rooted to execute them. And Google for your issue. I remember seeing a thread where someone was able to get their pics back after deletion.

simplest fix without using the root that you gained would be just disable the stock samsung camera then download one from the play store....but if you wanna use the root you just gained i would say download this then extract the samsung camera from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2741413 then with the root browser just delete the samsung app that you have installed and put the one you extracted in its place then fix the permissions then reboot and it should work now

i extracted it for you just use root browser to install it as a system app follow this video (same basic thing just use root browser that i provided and this apk) just instead of hitting install after you move the apk and fix the permissions reboot the phone and it will go in the system/app folder
I tried doing it and the camera just disapeared I tried installing it and said error parsing package

Its okay but I have a question thats off topic but Obvisly u know how to do alot of thing I have my backup bro and its screwing up cause kit kat wont let me do the ext. Sd card I read about this fix 2. Use a root-enabled file manager and navigate to /system/etc/permissions
3. Edit platform.xml and find “WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE“
4. Add an additional group definition for this permission: <group gid=”media_rw” />
5. Save the changes and restart your device
6. You are now able to write on your external SD card again
How to add an additional group defintion like there saying jc thanks

you mean to be able to send apps to your external SD instead of internal?
Yes ive tried using the apps for it and writing it but it still wont let me write to the external sd card and its messing up my my backup pro and titanium backup where it wont let me change to paths to there since kit kat and then im getting the insufficient space error from titanium when I have like 6 gbs on my ext. Sd card and it says it even when I try to backup even just facebook cause I was just gonna switch to CM rom cause of camera still screwing up but I wanna backup my things first but it wont let me and it pointless to do internal since I gotta wipe the data anyways but thanks

Even if you sent the apps to your external SD they would still be wiped if you do a full wipe in order to flash a new rom....but what you can do is copy the apps data to your external SD with a root browser. Basically make a copy of the "Android<Data" sub folder from your Internal SD then change the name of the Android Folder then paste it to your external SD and the apps data it self will be safe even if you wipe to flash a new rom...
