USB Audio not working on AOSP - Verizon HTC One (M7)

I tested the following ROMs and discovered they DO NOT support USB Audio:
AICP 3/06/14
AOSB 2/26/14
Carbon 3/02/14
CM10.2 2/01/14
CM11 3/07/14
Liquidsmooth 3/05/14
PACman 3/05/14
Slimkat 2/16/14
I can confirm that USB Audio DOES work with the GPE ROM. My understanding is that the GPE ROM is built from Sense, so I haven't encountered a single non/Sense ROM that supports USB Audio.
Has anybody had any luck with AOSP and USB Audio on the VZW HTC One?

USB audio requires support in the kernel to work. It is highly likely this support is lacking from the aosp kernel. It is completely possible that a dev could include usb audio though. I recall seeing it as not set in the config but the proper files would also need to be put into place and who knows if that would even compile properly into aosp from sense.

I tried using Lunar kernel in addition to the bundled kernel with each ROM.
I will have to check over on the Lunar thread to see if they know whether support is included in the kernel.
Interestingly, I made a little progress by flashing the latest version of the USB Audio Patcher MOD in the thread started by JackNorris. Now I get the familiar HTC One USB Audio stepping (0 or 100%, no middle steps) as well as audio being routed from the speaker.
The problem is no sound comes out of the external DAC, although it is routed away from the speaker. Basically, it is the same behavior after flashing the patch as it is in the Sense ROMs, but just no audio coming from the DAC.
I believe the issue is something missing from the Services.jar part of the framework. I am now in over my head.

So on GPE roms audio works and you get output on the DAC, Sense you get stepping but no output, and AOSP stepping with patch but no output
Get the app Sound About from store and try on patched AOSP and report back plz

Any update, im on liquid smooth and may flash back to gpe rom.

USB DACs work on CM11. The issue is that the phone doesn't automatically route all sound to the DAC like the stock ROM does.
It is there and working, but you wouldn't know it since the phone won't play sound through it. It is probably the same case with many other ROMs.

Then how does one fix the problem and get audio out of the external dac?

Dunno. Going to have to talk to an expert for that.

I'm willing to do a bit of coding work to help out if needed, GPE roms are not bad at all just shouldn't be the only roms that offer usb audio.

Nope. There isn't anyone to work on this stuff anymore.
I would do it but I have no idea how to even start something like that.

Am I getting the hint that developers don't want to touch Verizon devices? still waiting on the day that the fcc forces Verizon to allow unlocked devices on their network.

We don't have many devs, and it is because of a few reasons.
1. Verizon took their sweet damn time to release the M7. They were almost 6 months late to the party.
2. Verizon blocked bootloader unlocks on day 1. This made it impossible to develop anything until s-off was achieved. So, this essentially added another month to the release date.
3. There aren't many people with an m7vzw. This is related to #1.

Well, it isn't a drive, so don't know how you would mount a peripheral.

Does lunar kernel Support USB audio

not specifically in features, i doubt the functionality was intentionally left out though.. elemental might and there are some kernel on the international boards that do.. IMO if sound is truly important to you, switch back to sense- im enjoying aptx Bluetooth and Zero Infinitys godly audio and cant say im missing out on anything AOSP except for inferior quick settings (viper ROM has all the themeing you'll ever need

Known ROMs with working phone mic?

Are there any known 4.3 or 4.4 ROMs with working phone mic?
I've used CM 10.2 Stable (4.3) and Carbon Rom (4.4.2). Both work great, the only issue is that the headset is not usable for calls (low mic output). My solution for now is using the earbud/mic, but I'm curious to know if anyone has made progress on this. Aside from this, the various ROMs are near perfect for my needs.
I'm not very knowledgeable on the details of writing ROMs, but would any type of source code release from LG help developers solve this? Curious to know what the main hurdles are for the devs and what tools they need.
Thanks.
Wish I could tell ya but I don't have a headset with a mic. I'd say give AICP a try since it uses AOKP sources instead of CM. Might give ya a better outcome.

Still no luck on a solid working phone microphone (low volume on other end). And the search continues.
Now that mid March has come around, has anyone had any good luck with a working in call microphone?
I was previously using several 4.4.2 Builds however, the need for a working phone mic was too critical for daily usage.
I'm using a 4.3 build (Slim Bean) which I believe is the only one with a working phone. The build is an unofficial beta and the only real issues are lack of microSD function, FC on Google Drive, and a few freezes here and there. Overall it's usable for my needs but would like to get back onto 4.4.2 granted the phone mic works.
Any suggestions/advice would be great. Thanks!

Here is a manual fix for the in call mic from JustinNL on XDA:
Step 1:
download a "build.prop editor app", I used: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jrummy.apps.build.prop.editor
Step 2:
Modify these 2 specs in the build prop editor
persist.audio.handset.mic.type=digital --> replace digital with analog
persist.audio.dualmic.config=endfire -- replace endfire with false
Since i changed it i haven't had any complaints so far but flashing to new nightly makes it revert again, keep that in mind."
Been working great for myself and others.

How to verify apt-x in a rom

Hi, I'm planning on getting a Bluetooth headset that has apt-x but I'm not sure how to confirm if the rom I use allows it. It seems like the stock roms do support it but I'd like to stay on kitkat if possible (although It seems Bluetooth is a bit weird) I'm using the beanstalk rom right now but I can't figure out how to check support.
IMHO Its not the Rom but your BT Antenna that allows for it. This is built into S4 but not in S3. At least not to my knowledge. Now some Kernel developer may try to bring it over.

Any Custom ROM (better 4.4 or higher) supporting MHL to TV?

Hi All,
I really need the MHL function of the Note 2 to be connected to TV's HDMI. But I cannot find any custom ROM supporting it.
I tried the CM11, SlimKat, ... None of them has MHL. (well it's weird that SlimKat on Sprint Galaxy S3 supporting MHL, but Note 2 version doesn't)
I'll appreciate if anyone can give some idea on this issue. Just any CUSTOM (not stock) 4.4+ ROM having the MHL support.
Thanks.

Hi,
MHL function is available only in Stock based custom ROMs. Eg, Omni ROM.
Thank you for the reply.
Since the Omni Rom thread had been closed, can you advice here what are the advantages of the Omni Rom, now that it's stock-based? Or why not just use the stock ROM?
And is there any other Stock based ROM with good reputation? In fact I only care the stock functions like MHL, PEN, ...
Thanks again.

I have no clue what makes you think Omni is a stock based rom. Omni is an aosp based rom. Stock based roms are based off of touchwiz which will have mhl/hdmi along with full spen functions.
So for the l900 you would need to use rwilcos stock based rom, Alliance, or Community rom.

Thanks but seems like the Omega rom only supports N7100, not Sprint SPH-L900.
There are many cases the Sprint version Note 2 was excluded from the custom rom developing.
Interesting but regretful.

I know 100% that Alliance and Community rom both work with mhl/hdmi output on the l900 (sprint note 2). You can also try DN3 which also works. I use this feature all the time. I use the media dock and have hdmi, keyboard, and mouse connected. No aosp rom has mhl compatibility!!
If you are having issues with touchwiz roms and mhl these are a few things to check.
1. Mhl adapter needs to be designed specifically for Samsung device
2. You need external power supply for mhl to work (needs to be 2 amp output)
When you connect to your device and TV device should display hdmi connected.

Can you please give a working link for the "Alliance and Community rom" of SPH-L900?
I did search hard but didn't even get a download place for the Sprint version Note II.
Please note we better say a ROM of 4.4+, instead of any JB or older version, which was too old to be used.
Thanks.

The reason custom (aosp) roms dont have mhl is because Samsung wont release the source code for the drivers. Without drivers things wont work.

Hello, thank you for your reply :good:
I'm sure my mhl adaptor is working ok as i could connect to TV on stock rom no trouble at all.
In testing hdmi mhl output on Alliance rom, i could see the screen being projected to TV, however it only lasted for a few seconds, and then my phone got frozen while tv screen was going black/blank. I can't figure out what went wrong........
Also, when trying those different roms, i always did a full wipe......

I know how you feel.......i myself googled a lot too.....but it's just not going anywhere......very frustrating indeed.
I even tried miracast function. In cm roms, i think it's called cast screen. But still no good luck.
With stock rom, it only works when it's not rooted.
If rooted, then hdcp has to be disabled. I tried but in vain.
With cm12 roms, i googled and found out it's not supported yet.
With cm11, there seems to be a fix for cast screen. But it still didn't work........
Thank you so much for the link.
The MHL works on this version!
But seems like the sPen function not working, since there's no "copy/cut" option pops up when I clipped an enclosed area from the screen.
Do I have to use TW native launcher / web browser (I'm using Nova Launcher and Dolphin browser) to enable this function?
I wish it's just a matter of configuration, since I assume either sPen or MHL shall be wholly supported by this TW based ROM.
I'll appreciate someone can verify this sPen symptom, and give some advice.
Thanks.

It is a give and take thing. Community is not a stock n2 rom. It is actually parts of n2, n3, and s5. The only thing left to fix on Community is the clipping function for the spen. Only I have quit working on Touchwiz roms.
So long answer short. It is a rom issue not a problem with user setup.

What was your solution?
I am also looking for a car based rom but don't want to pay to get timur's
I bought into the timurs but when I tried to go back to stock - I cleared the rom and wiped the tablet to go to stock- I wiped everything and bricked the tablet. My computer didnt recognize the tablet in bootloader or twrp mode...Oh well. I am waiting for my other tablet to arrive to see if I can finally do it. As far as the question"...to timur or not to timur?" I couldn't tell you but the biggest complaint that I see while using the experimentalx is the recognition of the dac Which in my application makes the world of difference since everything is going to go through the dac - as far as audio. Another cool feature is its ability to recognize the reverse input through my camera. It switches to your backup camera app once the kernel detects power on the camera. Again, I have yet to test ANY of it out. Sorry I couldnt help anymore. it really all depends on what features you are looking for. Just as a comparision, I am gonna run the following: dac, 2 hubs, fm, back up cam, extra usb extension, flash drive for music, flash drive for video, and mic. Still trying to see if I can find a usb fan that is controllable via an app If it plugged into one of the hubs. Good luck...let me know what works for you.
Let's hope someone could share the Timur Kernel.
He said with his words that it is completely legit to share his source and kernel. He was just not willing to do it.
As the nexus is getting old. People who would like to donate has already done.
BTW, can you please share if you can get OTG & Charge to work together under elementalX without having to re-plug the mini-usb everytime?
Thanks.

[Q] What do people love about cyanogen mod?

This is my first phone with the capabilities to flash custom Roms and so far I've flashed most of the Roms available for the m9. I have my favorites.
But I've noticed that cyanogen mod has a huge following. What is it that makes this rom so famous? What are the pros and con's of the rom?
I saw that the beta version is out and would love to hear opinions on the rom to buy some time until a stable version is ready for me to test drive.
Thanks for your input
Sent from my HTC One M9 using XDA Free mobile app
Cyanogen mod is among one of the oldest full-featured android ROMS available. It has survived for so long since it is highly customizable, fast, stable, and gets good battery life. I'd definitely give it a go if you are curious about it. If you don't like it you can always restore from a backup or flash another rom.
I think a major factor in choosing to use it is that it's completely "de-bloated". There is no OEM crap taking up space and wasting battery.
Sure, most of us disable those things or uninstall them with Ti Backup, but it's just so much cleaner never to have had them.
It's really quick, and since it's based on AOSP, a lot more Xposed modules and customizers wwork with it (Like GravityBox, for example).
You should definitely try it out if you're curious. You'll probably like it.
The only downside is that the nightly builds and betas can be slightly dodgy sometimes (though the beta that's out is pretty good, minus the camera) and that since it's closer to a Vanilla android feel than OEM skins, you usually lose some of the device's unique software functionality. (Sometimes these can be re-downloaded from the play store, other times they just won't work)
Make a nandroid (or whatever we call these now. TWRP Backup?) and give it a go!
Thanks. I found this earlier explaining a little. http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Main_Page

No, I'm not one of the devs, just an "enthusiastic" tester and user
I'm really not sure about the sound mods, but I'd imagine that eventually v4a would work properly.
(If it doesn't already, this thread suggests that someone was able to get it working by changing SELinux mode to permissive, but it doesn't seem to have worked for everyone. You can always try it!)
I haven't updated my firmware recently so I'm not sure if an update may have affected sound volume (I'm not sure if you've updated your firmware either, but the CM Beta only works on 1.32.x so far anyway )

Thanks for the link. I didn't know that v4a was actually in the play store. I've only seen it in a custom rom. I actually have the selinux permission app already so definitely worth the try.
I'm on the new 2.8 developers edition firmware right now. But being as flashing firmware is so easy I can switch anytime. Am definitely going to follow the progress of cm and when it looks like most of the bugs are worked out I'll give it a try. Can't really run a beta on my phone because it is my daily driver.
You're welcome!
Keep in mind that you might need to be S-Off in order to tinker with firmware beyond updating it
(On some devices you need S-Off to downgrade or flash unsigned)
I am s-off thanks. Coming from my locked bootloader vzw s3 to this has been amazing. So I've unlocked everything to allow me full flexibility and freedom to customize as I see fit. I may never buy a carrier phone again.
