It has been several months since I was keeping tabs on S4 development. What is the current state of photo quality on nonTouchWiz roms? Last time I checked (around October), the original TW rom had upperhand, producing higher quality photo and more features in the camera app (notably: instant HDR).
How is it nowadays?
i still think stock rom has better quality and on cm10.2 when you are recording video through front camera it records in a weird aspect (everything looks squashed)
Subjective. With my test I see better quality photo that is not under sunlight (indoor, night, etc). And well, I don't care about daytime photo, since any decent enough phone can take acceptable photo. At least that on my Slimrom.
And this App: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.almalence.opencam beats the default photo app by TW or Slimrom. And that applies both on my S3 and S4 mini.

hi, you can try Camera ZoomFx i guess this camera get better photos than stock one and you can use it on any custom rom!

Hi,
I have/had many Smartphones apart from the P930. Somehow the picture quality of the P930 is the worst. Both picture and video capturing. Is this normal or some problem with my P930?
Cheers,
sb
As i know the camera module was produced by sony and it has good quality. Quality depends from which rom are you using. My point of view is that camera on stock rom (2,3; 4.0; and miui v4) is much better than on custom (i mean CM and Other)
the pictures from the rom in my sig are great, it's based off stock ics but custom kernel etc
warning you need to be unbricked and rooted etc, which isn't easy if you are new at moding phones
I tested all ROMs, also Mattman's and the Stock ROMs. The picture quality is quite bad in my opinion. Also the autofocus is not very good. Do you think this is a bug in my smartphone?
Mine is actually quite nice. In fact, I've submitted a few pictures to a couple contests and placed.

How is your autofocus?
Can you post the samples?
I've got 'prosumer' level photography equipment, so my opinions are jaded. That said, when I first got my Nitro I HATED the camera! It was extremely slow to take a picture and the amount of time it took between taking 1 picture until it could take another seemed like FOREVER. Blur, subpar color rendition...So yeah, I wasn't happy with the camera.
But since putting CM10.1 on, the camera software is LEAPS and BOUNDS better. Shooting speed is MUCH faster, the time between shots is MUCH shorter. The color rendition is much better, the auto-focus works better (click on area to focus)...Even in lower light conditions I get decent shots now. I can easily and wholeheartedly recommend using the CM10.1 camera vs. stock (Well, Stock OS when it first came out, ICS Stock might be worlds better too).
...All of this is at 1.0x zoom. Start using the digital zoom and all bets are off. Grain and blur run rampant the more you zoom.
My wife wants a new phone for Christmas to replace her ageing HTC Desire S. She complains mainly about the naff camera on the Desire and wants something better.
Not wanting to break the bank, I was looking at the Moto G as a possible replacement. I know the camera has its shortcomings but wondered if anyone has tried using any other camera apps to see if they make a difference in things like focus speed and shutter lag on the phone?
Thanks in advance.

If she wants better camera, tbh you should look elsewhere since Moto G cam isn't great...
I used camera360 ultimate on my moto G and its not great improvement...
Since i don't care about the cam, its the first midrange android i bought...and it ticks everything except cam and audio quality (through headphone)
You could get her a nice 8mp phone but since you are on a budget...
My first android phone was a samsung s2 8mp which takes better shot that my nexus4.
Maybe try Focal.

Compared Focal to the stock camera app facing light. Default settings on both apps. Focal did pretty bad
I found stock camera not so bad (for such a cheap phone).
I tried also Camera Zoom FX (ugly) and Camera FV 5 (a little better but nothing special).
The only other camera app that seems to perform well is VSCO Cam: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.vsco.cam&hl=it
I was also looking for a low-maintenance, point & shoot camera app that'll produce better pics than stock. I'll give VSCO a try.
The camera will not have massive improvements by chainging camera apps, litle or no improvement will be seen.
The Moto G camera is not that bad in my opinion. The reviews made me belive it was terrible. It's definitely not the best camera in the market, but for casual photos it can handle pretty well. And you can still use all those photo editing apps to make some color correction and etc.
This topic has some pictures taken with the Moto G in different situations, so you can decide for yourself if the 5MP camera is enough.

If you want something better you should probably consider another device as different camera apps wont give you a big improvement.
The camera in the Moto G is perfectly adequate. Not excellent, mind you. But good enough for normal use. The light is a bit dodgy but the quality and colour is fine on the test photos I took. Nothing that cant easily be fixed in Photoshop.
But lets be honest here. What are people going to use if for? Photographing food for Instagram and taking blurry selfies in the bathroom mirror? You don't need 41 megapixels for that.
it's not the best or the greatest. coming from an 8mp htc vivid there is a difference. better then expected though, and better then my old nexus one 5mp with flash.
Just so you guys know, when you take a picture in "Widescreen" (default setting, aka 16:9 aspect ratio), the picture is only 3.8 MP. If you turn it off in the camera app, it's 5 MP.

Ive taken the same photo in both modes but still get slightly more detail in widescreen.
Every phone I've had recorded video and took pictures that looked nearly the same with the stock rom AND with an AOSP variant. Then I ran into a problem with my Galaxy S4. If I don't use a Touchwiz rom, I cannot record video at full resolution. Here's a comparison of videos:
Touchwiz:
Constant 30 FPS at 720p or 1080p no matter the lighting condition
Smooth transitions when moving the phone while recording
Very high quality
AOSP:
FPS varies greatly between areas with light and areas with regular lighting. Inside the house, if I point the camera to a lamp, the quality goes immediately back to 30 FPS and smooth transitions. As soon as I point the phone to the wall (3 feet away from the lamp), FPS drops significantly and quality goes down the toilet.
The difference is so great that it looks like I recorded a video in a 2004 phone. This has never happened with any of my previous 6 smartphones. I could never notice any differences between a video recorded with the stock rom and one recorded with AOSP. And no, I do not care for the Touchwiz camera or any of its features on AOSP. i want basic funcionality Before I buy the Note 3, I want to make sure I can at least use the camera with an AOSP rom. Finally, does the camera on the Note 3 work properly with an AOSP rom just like it works with a Touchwiz rom?
I'm sure everyone is tired of people parroting that CM camera is not as good as stock and blah blah blah. Since I am a constant tester of my phones, here is what I have personally found. Feel free to share your results as well.
4.3 stock camera: I could not believe Sony released such bad software. Focus was a disaster and at least 50% of my pictures and videos were out of focus. Videos were especially affected by the lack of focus control. A significant number of my videos ended up being pure crap. Lighting conditions did not matter. Focus was horrible outdoors in plain daylight, indoors during day and night, everywhere. The camera was unreliable for one-time opportunities.
4.4.2 stock camera: The camera became much better than the 4.3 version, but still not the best. Pictures don't seem to be affected as much by the focus problem, but videos still have issues. Outdoors, videos seem to be mostly OK now, but indoors, I've noticed that the camera tries to focus constantly whenever I move the phone one tiny bit, even if the subject hasn't moved at all. That created a ghost on most of my videos because focus was never constant, although both the camera and subject moved very little.
CM 11 camera: Although definitely not perfect, my experience has been the best with CM. My pictures are hardly ever out of focus, and my videos are nearly always good. However, there are exceptions. I've noticed that the camera doesn't get and hold focus in certain situations. I've recorded a video inside a gym, at night with lights on from the middle of the court to the back wall. Without any zoom or flash, the focus was just shy of perfect, but was clearly off. This less-than-perfect focus issue has appeared in several of my videos. I've also noticed that when the camera is trying to acquire focus in macro pictures, it passes through the perfect focus point, but often settles in a less focused state.
My verdict
Out of all cameras, CM has given me the best results overall. It is far from perfect, but it has been the best for me. Also, after all the hype about the "amazing" Sony camera, I can honestly say I am disappointed. The cameras on my previous phones (AT&T Note 2 and S4) generated better pictures and videos. I expected it to be at least comparable in quality to Samsung cameras, but that is not the case when comparing all the pictures and videos I've taken, several of which at the same locations/events for better comparison. I absolutely love my Z1C and it was the first phone to break me free from the Samsung curse, but the camera does not meet my expectations.
What has YOUR OWN experience been? What problems have you found in each rom? How do you get the best pictures/videos?
hi,
nice post. I did quick test of RRrom vs KK camera few days back, keeping it short, CM camera gaveme too few settings to choose from. what is more, not like it matters much, CM11 front facing camera gives much worse output compared to stock. I have seen the new version of CM has rolled out recently, I hope for new CM based roms to come out soon. I will have some camera heavy days this week so I can do some more tests.
BTW, having the weekend free, I did 4.4 vs 4.3. Like the 4.3 camera better :]
Is there a big difference in performance of the camera say on liquidsmooth (or any other AOSP ROM) compared to the stock sony ROM? Are the pictures still 21 megapixels? I appreciate any help with regard to this. Thanks !

Came from stock and using LiquidSmooth now, some main differences I can see is greater options for ISO control on Liquid, but less precision in exposure values. Stock gives you fractions whereas Liquid only gets +1 or -1. Overall, I like the AOSP camera better since +1 or -1 exp is really all I need. You can adjust ISO up to 3200 .
Edit: Pictures are still the full 21 MP, and you get options for 60 or 120 FPS video recording but it keeps saying it's unsupported, so I'm not sure if it's actually been added yet.
Thanks for the response. Are the quality of the pictures the same?
I haven't noticed any difference, and I like to zoom in a lot to view small details. I'm not very experienced in photography, but the pictures still look really good. You can also customize the aspect ratio of 21 MP shots to 16:9, and more but I haven't bothered with that yet.
Bionz still works on aosp roms?
I'm not really sure how to check something like that, otherwise I would. It takes the picture instantly, reminds me of taking photos on the iPhone. That's with 4:3 21MP with any ISO and any Exp value. I think that means it's on, since after a little research I found Bionz is just the image processor. 16:9 21 MP takes a while to process, because I think it pieces it together instead of taking the picture like it does in 4:3.
