[Q] Arc S not booting after flashing new ROM - Xperia Arc Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello
As an initial note, I am not at all a techie guy. But I wanted to load Jelly Bean on to my Xperia Arc S. So I tried the following which I believe I should not have tried.
1. Rooted the device using ERoot 1.2
2.Unloaked the bootloader by following the steps described in sony website
3. Tried to flash Kernel using flashtool (latest from flashtool website) but was unsuccessful. It always says you need to root the device to flash in the activity log. But when I come out of fastboot mode, the flash tool always says the deice connected and it says the devise is rooted. But it never permits to flash the kernel in fastboot mode. I tried with different kernels, but unsuccessful.
4. So out of curiosity, I just decided to proceed with installation of jelly bean based on cynagenmod 10. So downloaded the Jelly bean ROM & doodle apps and copied to sd card.
5. I installed the CWM using x tool from play store.
6. opened the recovery mode and deleted all cache and other thing as per a video in you tube. Then proceeded with the installation of Jelly Bean and google apps. Installation was successful.
7. But when I restarted the phone, it just shows sony logo and hangs. It never starts.
8. After this I tried to flash a kernel again, it still says the devise is not rooted.
9. After reading few forum threads I decided to relock the bootloader and use pc companion to reload ICS or GB. I flashed a bootloader locker ftf file and was successful.
Now my phone is still showing only sony logo while boots and nothing. The PC companion is not detecting. Am stuck now. I don't know what to do. Please help. I donno if I did something wrong and l will have to discard my phone.

It's not the end of the world.

"Device must be rooted" error means bootloader is not unlocked. Check over, if you unlocked it properly, got all the codes correct etc.

There is no need for that. Custom kernels include Recovery already.

The issue there, is that this ROM and kernel do not work together in combination. ICS kernel must go with ICS ROM, GB with GB etc. Kernel was not installed, thereby you were with JB ROM, but ICS kernel (Sony logo).

Locking bootloader didn't change anything. You have to restore your phone to full stock ICS with Flashtool. Download complete ICS firmware FTF file and flash it with Flashtool.

Hey, Thanks for the reply.
I understand I need to restore ICS and ICS kernel completely. But for some reason I cant flash using the flash tool as it says the device is not rooted. But honestly I have rooted the device using ERoot and have unlocked the bootloader. I believe that is the reason why I was able to install the JB ROM.
Now I have 2 problem in front of me.
1. I cant flash as it says the device is not rooted
2. I have relocked the bootloader
what's next??

Flashtool does not need root or anything to flash ICS. You are doing something wrong then.
You have to flash whole FTF file in Flashmode. If you occur any error messages, post them here.

i had the same issue

Should we refuse the update whenever we get the notification for unrooted Arc S?

I have the same problem and have tried various solutions suggested on here, all to no avail. Can some kind person break it down in simple steps for me, I would be eternally grateful.
Had the same issue to get to .62.
I unlocked the bootloader and flashed ICS beta
The key is by using the flashtool if you want to
Do NOT use OTA update nor SEUS if you unlocked your bootloader. Its common that you will brick your phone. And if you want to remove the message from your phone just freeze the update service apk using titanium backup or any other application that can freeze applications.

Phone Unbricked again with sucess
Hi guys i want to share some information who was useful for me with Xperia Arc S 12w07 :
Important : Dont make normal updates with SEUS ou PCC if your phone was unlocked by other tool, because you will brick the phone, you need to start using other firmwares, but ask for opinions first..
After Alejandrissimo unbrick my phone, the phone ask me to do update to new version, so i click yes to make thet update, and after 5 seconds gave me one error in update, so my phone was dead again with yellow triangle with one phone, so i talk to alejandrissimo again and he gave one file to fix the phone again with Flashtool, so i will share with you ok, but i think i already saw this file in other post..
Steps :
1º - Install Flashtool - flashtool-0.9.10.1
1.1º - Google and find this file : " [Xperia Device] flashmode & fastboot driver bundle " and install all..
2º - Install all Drivers
3º - In flashtool be sure if the drivers already installed, sometimes the file install but in pc need to install more with the phone connected
4º - Select Flash Mode
5º - Put the fix file in folder firmware of flastool, and you can delete the other file x10 in the same folder you dont need.
6º - In " Program Files\Flashtool\devices\LT18 " you have this file loader.sin, when you try to flash if he give this error : " cant find loader_unlocked.sin ", then you need to rename the " loader.sin " file to " loader_unlocked.sin", and then flash again, and will work..
If was simple bick like my phone it will be fix it, maybe for other phones is the same, check the devices folder for the files and if you need to rename like i did...
Hope this help for some people ok..:good:
Now i need to update to new version of android, but i need to see what is the correct file to flash or i will brick my phone again..
Tks to Alejandrissimo again, he teach me to do that.. :fingers-crossed:

You have to unlock your boot loader and install a CWM loaded kernel because every time you change your ROM on a locked boot loader, you wipe your /system (partition with your CWM on it) so you lose CWM.

[Q] How to Backup stock Kernel + ROM ?

Hello Guys !
I wanna try some custom ROM so before doing that want to backup my Kernel & ROM. If anything gone wrong so I can revert back to original ROM.
My Cell details:
Xperia Arc S
LT18i
Android Version 2.3.4
Baseband Version -64
Build number
4.0.2.a.0.62
Locked bootloader
& unrooted.
Please someone guide me....
Thanks in advance...
If your bootloader's locked then you can't back up. You can only reload(repair)it from PC companion.
sinkster©
Thanks sinkster !
Ok done unlocked bootloader.
Then advice the further steps...
XPERIA CWM AUTO INSTALLER
download this app and install CWM recovery on ur phone...
Then reboot ur phone into recovery mode...
TO DO THIS, LONG PRESS BACK BUTTON WHILE THE PHONE RE-BOOTS
(OR)
KEEP TAPPING VOLUME DOWN BUTTON...
After it boots into recovery, go to BACKUP & RESTORE and Select Backup...
This will create a NANDROID BACKUP on your phone exactly as it is...including apps n contacts n all other data..
you can find it in SDCARD/Clockworkmod/Backup/
Good day...
If you wanted to take a backup without installing CWM you can use fastboot to boot (not flash) a kernel that has CWM built in.
thanks amulbaby
I will try and get back here with comment ...
EDIT:
I tried that steps but it will works only on rooted phone ..., can not enter in to recovery mode by pressing any key, it normally boots up and appear home ...

Why don't you root it with flashtool then?
But for that u wud have to downgrade to .42, with flashtool before rooting
Hey I am also wondering about this. I have lt15i flashed with Official .562, locked bootloader and CWM installed via flashtool.
Which ICS roms will work with official .562 and locked bootloader? I have been searching all morning but not a lot of updates regarding this since the official .562 release.

Here is the point I was looking for these alternative . . .
I have STOCK ROM with 4.0.2.a.0.62, actually I want to backup these stuff, I read about that downgrading via flashtool and root, if I flashed via flashtool that STOCK ROM will wipe...
Anyway here what I did to make a copy of my stock firmware & upgraded to ICS firmware & rooted.
Repaired my phone using Sony update service to download and backup STOCK firmware
Flashed with flashtool official firmware LT18i 4.1.A.0.562 NCB Icecream Sandwich Official
First you need to download a kernel that has cwm built in, I would search for recoveryARC.IMG then you also need fastboot from the SDK.
All you would do is connect your phone I'm fastboot then run in a command prompt fastboot boot recoveryARC.IMG. Your phone would then boot using that kernel and you can enter cwm by pressing the vol down several times. This process wouldn't flash your kernel only load it temporarily.
I would try and find a guide about them but I'm on my phone.
Sorry just noticed you've already done it, congrats enjoy ics.

Thanks bro ...
I already upgraded, anyway I want to know the process, you mentioned here this process wouldn't flash kernel only load it temporarily, I am confused...
Could you describe in details .. ? Actual what happens if we flash recovery img...
Well you can use fastboot to install the kernel which overwrites the previous one, or you can use it boot the kernel which just sends the kernel to the phone which the boots and temporarily uses the kernel. However when the phone next shuts down it will return to normal use.
If you flash a kernel it writes the .IMG to the boot partition. So if I wanted to use a kernel that stayed between reboots I would use 'fastboot flash boot kernelname.IMG'
However if I was running stock I could use recoveryARC.IMG with cwm, and do fastboot boot recoveryARC.IMG then run update.zip as normal. Then all you have to do is reboot, you'll be back to stock but the update would still be installed.
Sorry if it's not cleat, the best I could do on my phone.

Can you please give me details on you did this? It is precisely what I want to do (ie. Backup the stock carrier rom on my Xperia Arc before flashinging an old ROM in order to root it).
Did you use the "repair" option from "Sony PC Companion 2.1>Support Zone>Phone software update>repair phone"?
Or did you use the software from here: http: // w ww(dot)sonymobile(dot)com/gb/tools/update-service/
Can you please tell me the whole procedure on how you did the backup of the STOCK ROM? Thanks!

ROM backup OK; How to take backup of Kernel
I am using Sony Xperia Ray ST18i
used it for a year with stock kernel and ROM
rooted it long ago, but was afraid of custom ROMs
last month I unlocked bootloader, flashed ROM and custom ROM (beanstalk 4.3.075), enjoying it but obviously not so stable like stock
Now if I wish to move back to my stock kernel and ROM
what steps are required.
I suppose
1. flash the stock kernel
2. restore from backed up ROM (I do have nandroid backup of stock ROM)
but how to achieve the step 1, as I learnt nandroid backup doesn't backs up ROM.
My collegue is having same phone still on stock, Can I use his phone somehow to extract kernel. I searched and found a zip to be used through CWM which backs up kernel it was meant for some samsung phone I tried but failed.
Thanks in advance.
Do I need to supply some more information to get help?

[Q] Bootloop on LT15i

My LT15i got upgraded to .62 version via OTA and I wanted to downgrade it to .42 to root it safely and easily. Something didn't work out and after flashing the downgrade my phone got bootlooped. I downloaded different official ROMs to go back to, but I can't flash them

Any ideas what can I do? I didn't use fastboot since I'm not sure what should I do with it, just flashtool.
Just keep flashing it or use Update Service to repair it.
There are dozens of generic ROMs.
e.g. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1491066
Use Flashtool repeatedly.. doesn't always work the first time around..
Does the LED indicator change after a while of being plugged in in flash mode? Check this, as I kept having the same issue. I just kept yanking the cable out and plugging it back in and repeating the procedure over and over until it fianlly flashed the kernel for me.
Was using arcknight kernel when i got stuck in bootloop, flashed to stock kernel and repaired over SEUS before unlocking BL and rooting once again using zergrush
Follow these steps.
pre requisites - Rooted/Bootloader unlocked.
1. Download the Flash tool.
2. Download the generic global rom - LT15i 4.0.2.A.0.42 (.ftf) [Search in the forum]
3. Flash the ftf using flash tool. (google how to flash using flash tool. There are numerous threads)
4. Once you successfully installed .42 firmware. [Using flashtool root the mobile using zergrush method. if u want]
5. Install busybox using flash tool.
6. Install x-parts from play store to install the CWM.
That's it.
Let me know if u have any problems.

The problem is, I used to have root and CWM installed, but now I can't enter it, because when I flash the ROM, it gets stuck in certain moment. I'm stuck somewhere between 3 and 4 point, where my flashtool doesn't correctly flash the ROM onto my Lt15i. From this bootloop I can't reach CWM or normal system to enter the google play or something.
I'll keep on trying flashing it, I'll also try to flash it from another computer
Is it possible that flashtool is being blocked by certain application like, I don't know, PC companion?
Additionally, I can't go back to the stock ROM via PC companion or SEUS, because when I'm in flashmode and phone is ready to flash, the PC companion says that my phone is already upgraded and there are no new updates to it, so it can't be upgraded, even tho there is some old flashed ROM inside ( I think PC companion reads the old ROM, that I used to have before bootloop, I believe it was the 4.0~~~~.62 version)

Disable antivirus and run the flash tool with adminstrator. Try to refalsh the .42 firmware.
Try to flash the .42 ftf with old version of flash tool. I saw some cases where with new flash tool, .42 is not flashed successfully.

[Q] Rooting Xperia play r800i 2.3.4 build 4.0.2.A.0.79

Noobie here. Have been searching the internet to find a sucessful way to root my Sony Xperia play r800i 2.3.4 build 4.0.2.A.0.79. So far I can't seem to find a solution that works (have followed a few walk throughs but none have worked). Can anyone help? ...please... I've been trying this for 4 months now!!!
Hey,
seems you need to flash an older firmware:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2157425
(question 2)
the tutorials related should help!
Also, you might want to back up apps and things because flashing a firmware resets your device.

not necessarily.
i haven't tried this on the .79, but as it works for .69 it most likely works for it aswell.
take a look at this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1299729
Yes but that's for unlocking the bootloader.
You can root anything after that, however if you don't want to do it then 62 is the limit, at least according to the stickied FAQ, which I'm assuming would have been updated had it not been the case, no?

afaik unlocking the bootloader is just for flashing a custom firmware (cm7 in that guide) and is not needed to get it rooted.
No, you can flash a firmware without unlocking. (firmware (like .79 or .62) =/= rom (like CM7) =/= kernel (Doom LuPus etc))
Honestly, it's all in the effing FAQ in post 2.
Unlocking voids your warranty but allows you to install custom kernels, which are pre-rooted. However it's not required if all you want is a root access to debloat your stock rom. In OP's case, he wants an older firmware to get root with superone click zergrush method (because he's above .62).
However it's true it's not needed to unlock the BL to get root in general, just if you want to root above .62 and don't want to downgrade (and are willing to void your warranty for it)
Note: flashing roms doesn't actually void your warranty seeing as you just have to factory reset before sending your phone to customer service if you ever need to. But you can't relock your bootloader, because you need a key from sony to do it, and so they keep a record of you voiding your warranty in the process.

If you want everything stock do next (this works, I have the 79 fw in my Xperia right now with stock ROM and Kernel):
1. With Flashtool, flash the 4.0.2.A.0.79 firmware (Don't close flashtool)
2. Disconnect the Xperia and connect it in Fastboot.
3. In flashtool go to mode selector and select Fastboot mode
4. Now go to "Select kernel to HotBoot"
5. Select the "recoveryPlay.img" that I put in the attachments. Wait for your phone to reboot into the recovery by itself, don't disconnect yet.
6. Now in the recovery select "Install zip from SD card" and flash the "RootXperia.zip" that I put in the attachments.
7. Restart and disconnect your phone. Now you should have the phone rooted.
Go to Google Play and update the superuser app. Then open Superuser and update the su binary.
If you have the bootloader unlocked you can flash any kernel (Lupus or Doomlord) and thats enough. That Kernels are rooted.

Hi there, I have unlocked the bootloader and followed what you have said (steps 1-7) and all seems fine. Went to google play and updated the superuser app. Opened superuser and tried to update the su binary and it says
Downloading manifest.....fail!
I purchased the SU update fixer via google play, and still it fails!!! What am I doing wrong? All I wanna do is delete sims and a couple of other pre-installed games to make room for games I wanna play. (guess I should have backed up my contact list before flashing the phone too!!! Doh)

In order for you to bring your phone to Fastboot mode, you need to switch it off completely, and connect it to your computer while you hold the SEARCH key. A BLUE light will be shining in the notification LED while you're in this mode.
Note: Your phone muts have the bootloader unlocked

Will this work on the r800x model as well? I tried the method " [HOW-TO][zergRush Root] Root w/ v2.2.x-2.3.x (NOT ICS 4.x or GB after 11/2011)" but it is GB after 11/2011 and did not work. If this wont work how else can I do this? I would also like to unlock the bootloader and install JellyBean for my son but I am not sure what really the disadvantages are of doing it. We just got the phone today and I havent never had Sony Phones.

If you are on r800x then you would have to downgrade to 2.3.3 before trying to root.

If you are on 2.3.4 w/ r800x then as I said above you will have to downgrade before trying to root... But if you want to unlock it then you don't have to be rooted to unlock bootloader first.

[Q] Xperia play Gingerbread to Jellybean/Kitkat

Hi can anyone advise what the problem could be?
I have been trying to upgrade my Xperia play from Gingerbread to Jellybean and failed,
My handset is Bootloader unlock Status = No, although O2 unlocked the carrier so I could use any carrier.
So when I goto Sony bootloader unlock site the phone will not goto fastboot mode. Just says Waiting
When I open Fashtool I have successfully rooted the phone, but when I try to Flash the phone rather than go into Fastboot mode the just restarts.
I am using Windows 7 64bit.
Any help on getting this done is greatly appreciated

Umm I think only the simlock has been removed. But the bootloader is still locked and cannot be unlocked. and what button are you pressing to go into flashboot?

I have used search button whilst plugining in USB.
Does that mean bootloader is locked, so impossible to unlock?
The sticker on the back of the phone is W46. Read somewhere that using Flashtool may damage the phone.
Thanks in advance

SIM Unlocking the phone inst the same as Unlocking the Bootloader. If you Have Bootloader unlock Status = No you can still unlock your Bootloader via the Test Point method.
If you Unlock your phone with the Test Point method you will not have acces to Fastboot Mode, but you can still Flash Kernels via Flash Mode Using the FTF version of it(insted of a boot.img file).
Look in my signature if you want any FTF kernel.

Just read the instructions for whatever kernel you are using, and same with the rom you want to install.

As above, follow the guide above. Since you unlocked via the testpoint and there's no fastboot, you need to have your kernels in a .ftf file format.
Here's a thread with download links to ftf kernels: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2739559
You will need to use flashtool to flash them. The JB ROM can then be flashed via recovery normally.
My Xperia PLAY was locked to O2 as well and testpoint unlocked, and these have been working fine for me so far... although for some reason my phone stopped working with ICS ROMs. GB and JB still works however.
Phone bricked.
I flashed the Lupus JB kernal and then entered recovery menu and deleted formatted and now it just a blank screen as if the phone is off yet plugging in the usb is recognised by computer yet flashtools and Sony companion can't repair or recognise.
Any ideas?
Grover
Exactly what did you delete/format under recovery? All I did was pick the factory reset option, then wiped cache and dalvik cache, and then flashed the ROM and worked fine for me. I'm using version 8 of the kernel however for the extra data space.
Here are the ftf files for the stock original Sony firmware, which you can use to restore your device if flashing goes wrong (.79 is the latest): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=43935357&postcount=2
I formatted the file as you did and it came on with a blank lit screen so I flash the default file in firmware a on flash tools to get nothing but a blank dead screen
Any help is greatly appreciated
Grover
1) Download the .79 ftf firmware and place it in Flashtool's firmware folder.
2) Open up flashtool, and plug in the Xperia PLAY in flash mode (hold back button while plugging in USB). Flashtool should report the device is in flash mode.
3) Press the flash button (lightning symbol) and select the stock .79 firmware, then confirm to flash that.
4) Wait for it to finish flashing. Flashtool will then ask you to reboot the device.
5) Unplug the phone and hold the power button until it vibrates. Let go and it should boot back into the stock Xperia software.
It should now be back to stock, and you can attempt to try custom ROMs and kernels again.
Unfortunately this is where the problem lies. Flash tools doesn't recognise that the phone is there hence can't flash it with stock firmware.
It is In a dead state. Is there anyone who offers a service to Unbrick it and what tools are required?
I am not dettered by having bricked my phone, as this is all part of my learning, although I would appreciated a possible fix to Unbrick it.
Thanks in advance
Grover

All the drivers where installed as per instruction. The phone is in a state of being off all the time no lights or anything.
The only thing that is heard is the usb sound on the computer when it is connected.
Flashtools Sony Companion doesn't see the phone at all.

Yes, if you unlocked your Bootloader via the test point method for the R800x and the R800i you should have access to Fast Boot Mode. You only don't get access to Fast Boot Mode if you have "Bootloader unlock status: No"(and unlocked via the Test Point Method), witch is about 100% of R800a users.
As above. Sadly, all phones sold from O2 UK have bootloader unlock as no, so the normal way of unlocking won't work and only the tespoint method is avaliable... So no fastboot. Due to that, I buy my phones unlocked and unbranded now. Luckily thanks to the great developers on here we can still root and play around with custom ROMs.
What version of Windows are you using Grover? I'm not sure if it's related but I have problems with adb/fastboot drivers on Windows 8/8.1 with HTC devices. Everything works perfectly on 7 though.
