Kit Kat 4.4.2 Free hotspot / tethering T-Mobile - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 3

Prior to upgrading to 4.4.2 I was able to tether my device by modifying the APN and using the hotspot widget. After several attempts to recreate these settings I am unable to. My device is currently not rooted. Does anybody have a working method?

Also freeze tethering provision in system apps and it will work with the widget.

Thiis method is working for me but requires root.

download the wifi tether router on playstore. it cost less than 2 bucks and its all worth it

I was looking for a non-root method until there is a knox safe option for rooting. May have to just trip the counter and root

Nothing is safe!! Tmobile or the insurance would care less about Knox being tripped. Wifi tether router, works awesome.

[Q] wifi tether without being rooted

how can you have a mobile hotspot without being rooted and if not possible is any temporary root apps or programs that i can install. Which bring me to this question as well, Is unrevoked a temporary root program?
You can do WIRED Tethering using free apps like PDAnet without being rooted, however free wireless tethering requires rooting.
And there is no "temporary Root." You're either rooted or not. Either way, you CAN unroot if you choose
PDAnet and EasyTether have a trial period of like a month? maybe. After that trial period is over, you can still use the software for USB Tether however you will not be able to connect to secure sites and have to purchase a one time license.

It's easy enough to unroot if you ever need to take the phone in for warranty stuff. Read up and watch some movies on thedroiddemos dot com for more info. Do a good week or more's worth of research before you make your decision. Most of the problems you might run into have been run into before and have been solved or prevented with updates to the things you'll load to the phone.
Good luck!

Z4root is a temporary root app, but unrevoked is not. you could part $30 for tether, not that I would

tethering after T999UVLJ4?

Was just wondering if there was anyone that uses the phone that is not rooted and after the update still been able to tether with the changing of the APN in the device settings?
Only reason I ask is I have a One S as well that just after the update I can no longer change the APNs the device switches back on its own.
Opps so sorry this belongs in q a
if you can please move.
subscribing for a response - i just cancelled my update to hear if the update will be an issue
I'm tethered to it right now.
How are you guys tethering without root? Foxfi?
Oh crap I'm sorry, totally didn't see the not rooted part.
Make my own APN in the settings of the to bypass the software on the phone and on my computer changed the user agent string of my browser to that which is on my phone. Can also use a tablet one too.
That works as long as the phone allows you to change APN setting.
The previous version of software on the galaxy does allow you to set and use your own APN.
I'm just not sure about this new version.
Don't really want to update and lose that ability again like on the one s I have too.

I'm considering rooting to tether as I have to travel a lot in the upcoming months. What guide did you use?
Did you have to unroot to get the update then update then root again? What's the flash counter?
Lastly, what app do you use? Free Wifi Tether?
Thanks! I can PM if you want.
Dumb Question (noob)
I'm now rooted on UVLH2 if I update to the new release today, will it remain rooted or must I re-root, and is there a different root procedure or do I again use the same root process?
Sorry If I'm posting a question in the wrong place.
Thank you!

I rooted mine before UVLH2 & after the update root was gone with counter set to 0. So, I guess same will happen for a new update & you'll have to root again.
By the way I checked for software update over data connection and got the message " Access to the software update service is provided to users in the order in which they request it. Try later."
What does that mean?

Phone: T-mobile Samsung Galaxy S3 16+32(class 10) gig
ROM: Stock (not sure for how long!)
Rooted: Of course Yes!
Past companions:
HTC Touch Diamond
Nokia 1110
Motorola C155
Try the APN trick method and change your computers user agent to that of the phone.
Works before the update I know that just not sure if will work after the update.
As far as upgrade from rooted? If the update comes thru and you have stock recovery should update ok but will probably lose root.
Anyone yet try this after the latest update.
No one has tried this after the update at all?

U do loose root but you can gain it back the same way you originally gained root. I just tried the free wifi app from the app store and it worked flawless. Hope it helps.
I never had root on mine (yet)
But do the tether work around and I also use with another provider.
That after the update to my One S I can't even change the APN for use on the other provider.
But I did go ahead and do the update to the Galaxy S 3 to UVLJ4 and not rooted can still change APN for use with other providers and can do the APN trick for free tethering yet.
tethering works for me .... mess around with the settings

Installed 4.1.2 ROM over Android 4.3 rooted stock ROM.

To all,
I had some problems with tethering two weeks ago. I usually don't really care about upgrade but because of connectivity issue. I went ahead and updated my SGH-T999 to Android v4.3.
I was on Android 4.1.2 rooted. In any case, tethering is now inoperable. VPN connection speedtest is horrendous. I have it rooted using root66 method. I have been using TrevE Mod Wifi Tether App before but it's now longer working. I also tried purchase "Wifi Tether Router" and it was useless.
My Warranty Bit is now 1 but I don't really care about the warranty. I owned the phone almost 2 years now and didn't buy any insurance so insurance is irrelevant.
What I really really need help on is either to be able to tether again or revert it back to 4.1.2. From reading some of the threads, it said that once you go to 4.3 you can't Odin any previous releases. But it seemed you can flash previous release ROM.
Here are the some questions:
1. Is there any way that I can fix tethering with 4.3? With or without VPN connection.
2. Is there any way, I can flash 4.1.2 ROM on to my phone and would this allow me to tether again?
Thank you for all your help!!!
--leapfrog (not too happy froggy)
Please do not try to downgrade to 4.3. The upgrade is one way. If you tried to downgrade, you will get a expensive paperweight.
As to the tether, I can't say for a fact. I do believe rooting would help. I have never used Tether, let alone on 4.3. I do know, there are several network issues with 4.3

Thank for the advise, Persues71. A working phone is definitely better than a dead one.
Since you don't care for Warranty, would you consider a custom Rom ? Practically most of the AOSP roms have built in Tether. Working tether at that.

Thanks, I am looking into flashing DocHoliday77's StockMod ROM. I will need to review the thread carefully before proceed cuz I sure don't want to brick it.
FWIW, he has included a special zip for enabling native Tether.

Kitkat installation stuck on reboot of phone. Can't use!

Help I accidentally hit the start for the installation on my note 3 for kitkat as it's been nagging at me for weeks.
Before I could pull the battery the phone turned off. Now the phone is only booting to the kitkat installation screen.
How do i cancel this?!
I am afraid to let it finish so my phone will be stuck with kitkat from here on out.
Kitkat on my gf's note 3 lost:
free wifi tethering
no vpn functionality
When phone turns on it says, Recovery booting at the top then goes right into installation of kitkat. I've been pulling the battery each time as soon as it does start loading kitkat.
I just upgraded to Kit Kat and get better battery life and the device is faster. I'm also rooted running stock.

Yes but now if you try to share your internet with wifi tethering it will accumulate data against you.
Or if you ever want to use your vpn service you are shafted also.
I understand. I'm not sure if you can go back at this point. Keep searching the forums. Good luck.

That's not entirely true about the wifi tethering. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=47203432&postcount=70
I can't speak to anything about the VPN functionality since I've never used it.

Yes to get wifi tethering to work in kitkat requires rooting my phone which voids warranty. Voiding my warranty isn't quite a fix. I'd rather just not have kitkat.

What? Explain that to me.
You can root 4.4.2 without tripping knox. If you have a warranty claim, just unroot and your Knox will still say 0x0. How does that void your warranty?
I'm 4.4.2 and rooted with Knox showing 0x0 right now.

I've never seen any info on rooting kitkat on a note 3 that won't trip knox. Where is this method located?

I can confirm it works, but if you took the OTA I'm not sure if there's a way to do it. This method involves starting from a rooted 4.3 with Knox still at 0x0.
Good luck!

[Q] android pay working for anyone?

I am running on stock rooted OF8 and can't seem to run android pay. Setting it up it says that it can't determine if it is compatible. Google wallet did work before. Anyone else run into this?
Apparently it doesn't work on rooted phones. Read some where that you can activate it and then root afterwards but haven't tried it yet.

works for me non root for now
Were i can find android pay ?
It worked for me non rooted at a vending machine. Though rooted or not at Maverick and Smiths, (3 times total) it has caused my phone to freeze after I verify my pattern lock.
Anyone having that issue?
Haven't been even able to set it up. Rooted on OF8. I'm going to flash the new build tonight and see if I can get it working before I root again and see what happens.
Use an app like RootCloak or HideMyRoot. Once you hide root you can add your cards with no problems. Using it to pay you will need to hide root again.... way too many steps for it to be convenient for me.

Where can I get a working version of either of those apps? All the ones I found doing a Google search are outdated and people say they don't work anymore.
I use Hide My Root from the PlayStore. It worked for what i needed but you cant use it for individual apps like RootCloak can. I'm odexed and can't get RootCloak going.

Worked for me today at mcdonalds i unrooted so i can update to get samsung pay.
