Well the autobrightness wasn't working as I wanted it to. Never had issues with it before on other devices.
So I downloaded Velis auto brightness
I noticed the sharp brightness sensor was sometimes juming between 2 values like 552 lux and 12 lux causing a constant change off brightness. (flikkering)
Could someone check the brightness sensor, and check if it also fluctuate? My S3 keeps steady values...
I had a faulty pro8.4 (dead pixels) on the first day and the auto focus was also not working properly.So I would like to know wheter I have an other faulty tablet or it is just the sensor that reacts differently.

I have noticed the same thing. When I am scrolling through a website I notice the flickering brightness. I ended up turning the auto brightness off.
My auto brightness just doesn't seem to work at all. It just defaults to lowest brightness. Funny thing is it worked on first boot, but stopped after the very first time I turned the screen off then back on.

My Lux values were all over the place too. Luckily there's an application on the Play Store called Lux which fixes everything. Just set it to adaptive. That's what worked for me.

Can you go to Settings >> Display >> Brightness and then click the settings icon and then the Adjust button. That should tell you the value of the sensor as seen by CM.
Does it really fluctuate there? If so, can you maybe take a quick video so I can see what you are seeing?
I'm pretty sure this is a hardware issue. My sensor flips +/-1 when I leave the tablet sitting there. Covering the sensor drops in down to about 0 and then it bounces right back to the same value when I uncover the sensor.

Wow Thanks so much for suggesting the Lux app. The stock auto brightness jitter was driving me crazy, especially when scrolling around in the playstore.
On a side note, samsung screens are hella bright when viewing at night. Going to put Lux on my phone too lol.
A autobrightness mod I use on my Nexus 10 is the XPosed framework and Gravity box module. Your can set the brightness and lux pair values then reboot. On my Nexus 10 it took three days (night/day) conditions of tuning values until I found the sweet spot. It was not too much of a bother and I've not had to make any adjustments since. Look in Gravity box for display tweaks then all settings can be modified but the pair values mentioned above are under autobrightness levels.

Been playing with my new phone and love it but man is the auto brightness a piece of crap. It sets the backlight so low you get weird banding on solid colors and off whites. Just turn brightness to 30% or so and boom its a whole different screen, colors pop and I don't notice any banding. Whites are great too.
They need to fix this fast since it comes with auto brightness on and its going to give people a bad impression.

auto-brightness is always a little too aggressive for my liking..
It was a problem with the Nexus S as well. Drove me nuts.
Seems AOSP roms are very aggressive with dimming.

known issue. Manufacturers tend to be really aggressive with this so you can get better battery life (yea I know.. pointless right?)
Just wait for custom ROMs. Or go download paulobrien's tweak for the automatic brightness settings. (of course, as others have said, you can just turn it off)
auto brightness has always sucked on Android, iOS has a customizable auto brightness that adjust to the level you put it on initially, where as on Android there's no option to adjust the default brightness when auto brightness is enabled.

Not just iOS, even my 3 year old Nokia allows you to adjust the level of auto brightness. Wish this is native to Android. I found my Nexus One too dim on auto brightness too.

The auto-brightness doesn't just seem too low to me but also buggy. Most of the time it's really dim, but occasionally it will suddenly shoot up to a decent level

I find it too bright.. the display is perfectly usable on minimum brightness in a normally lit room bit it keeps winding the brightness up, draining the battery. It seems stuck on about 50%.
My Nexus S did the same thing.. Drove me nuts. I had to switch it off and force it to minimum half the time.
Hopefully the ability to tweak the levels in detail will be ported over from CM7 later. For now, you can use PaulOBrien's kernel where he adjusted it.

Same here, with my Nexus S, too bright.
This is one of the first things I do when flashing a rom on my incredible. They usually have to ramp down the brightness very quickly, probably for battery life. Cm has the tool hopefully it will be loaded soon.

Problem I've realized is on SAMOLED devices the screen is an absolute battery killer so there's no wonder they are aggressively keeping it dim. I bet if you ran this phone at 100% brightness just sitting idle it'd last like 10 mins
Using stock 4.0.1 here, and have always had the brightness set to auto. But it never seems to do anything? If I am in a light or dark room it is always dark, often darker than the lowest brightness setting.
I am just worried that the sensor might not be working, if the phone needs to be sent back it needs to be done soon. Anyone else with this issue? I know the sensor that turns off the phone screen when in call works, but the auto brightness might use a different one.

Auto brightness is just simply low on this device. There are some hacks in the dev section to increase it...but they don't work on my ROM.
I just started using juicedefender to adjust the auto birghtness
So auto brightness itself is broken and sensor is pry OK? I wonder if there are any apps to test it.

Simply put a bright light to it and watch the screen brighten up. The sensor is fine.. auto brightness simply is a little too conservative, probably because more people would moan about battery life than screen brightness.
My auto brightness works just fine. Sometimes I have to the screen off then on for it to adjust. Other than that, the levels are fine. I'm on 4.0.3.

I've noticed the same. It stays bright a lot of the time in dark places. I haven't noticed it staying dim in sunlight though.
To me, the way it was before seemed broken. It would constantly change its brightness level. This was effected by the light reflected off clothing, etc

But I Dont find any issue with it either. In fact, if you dig in, you'll find the process consumes 30% lesser battery than before ie. Screen + sensor timing and refresh for both...

I'm actually pretty sure this is the default behaviour for ICS as well its only 3rd party roms that added in the ability to auto dim as well as auto bright the stock way is it only goes dimmer if the screen turns off and back on other wise it stays at the maximum brightness
Sometimes if I'm using the widget to move from full to auto brightness and tap very fast, it'll sit at full brightness. If I toggle slower its fine. Definitely some bug there.
I think auto brightness is much better in 4.1.1. Before it was far too dim, now it seems just right in all conditions.
I'm using the app "Lux Auto Brightness" and it couldn't be doing a better job.
Definitely check it out if you're unhappy like I was with the stock auto-brightness

that has been the default behaviour from ages for stock goole rom:
the autobrightness only can increase...it doesn't decrease, unless u lock and ulock the phone or check and uncheck autobrightness
that the intended behaviour google want..the brightness get increased, but not decrease..

Yes, it delayed the lock screen and when I set my phone down under a bright lamp and it woke up hours later in pure darkness, it might soft reset.
happens to me as well on stock 4.1.1. if I'm in a dark room and put the phone under a lamp or something, the brightness goes up instantly, but it never comes down until I lock/unlock the screen again.
in fact most of the time I think the thing is too bright (but that may be because I come from a nexus one always on the lowest setting since the autobrightness there didnt really work well).
it's a minor annoyance definitely

found this thread during my search for this brightness issue. My Galaxy Note 2 has the same strange behavior. But I figured out something: when I lay down the device to a table or bring it to 0 degrees in my hand, automatic brightness it's decreasing perfectly! Can you confirm this behaviour at your nexus? I guess it's a kind of strange Samsung " feature", maybe?

Ahoy, I was also researching my auto brightness issues when I found this thread. I can confirm the behavior from the previous post on my SGS2 on Jelly Bean 4.1.2.
If the phone is in vertical position and I do the lamp test, it will stay on maximum brightness no matter what, but in horizontal position dimming works perfectly.

With auto-brightness turned off and brightness turned up all the way, I am seeing the brightness go down when some apps are launched and turn back up when the app is closed. I noticed this today when launching GoChat and then also saw it when launching the stock jellybean web browser. I am not sure but I think this has only been happening since the last software update (T-Mobile USA).
I wonder if others are noticing this.

Saw the same thing when I launched camera app, I am on the latest update.
One difference is that I'm on auto bright and the brightness never came back

Well, I have auto-brightness, auto adjust screen tone and power saver ALL TURNED OFF, but this 'feature' persists... and as I said, this is not just during web browsing, this is also during messaging with a 3rd party app, namely GoChat, with black background theme.... this is just not a smart feature.
maybe this is taken care of in the new update. i haven't unpacked it just yet. hoping to do that over the weekend or maybe even tonight.

What you're describing sounds like how Adapt Display is supposed to work. Does the display act any differently when you enable Adapt Display?

I have the same issue. Turned everything off completely and it still happens. I posted about a week ago and some people were having the same issue.
Some people said it was adapt display on, but I have it off. Once I switched to.the CM10.1 the issue went away. I switched back to wicked Rom and I'm still getting the same problem.
Maybe a dev will eventually figure it out while building a Rom

It seems like this is a feature that cannot be disabled by the end user. This is from Anandtech's review
"On the brightness front, the SGS4 includes dynamic contrast functions that cannot be disabled and change as a function of what is being displayed. There's an "auto adjust screen tone" checkbox under display but don't let that fool you, that doesn't disable dynamic contrast, just white point."

If it really annoys you, you can always try rooting it and install CM10. I'll be a drastic change but at least you wont have to deal with Samsung's bloat
Just curious if anyone else is having this issue.
I have the box checked, but I found myself manually adjusting, thinking it just wasn't very sensitive. I turned on auto brightness, moved the slider all the way to dim, went out to the sunlight, and it had no effect. Unchecked, and rechecked the box, restated the phone, did the opposite in a dark room... No effect.

I believe the slider sets the maximum brightness. So when you go out in the sunlight the spot where you placed it is the brightest it will get.

I don't think it's a bug. The auto brightness on some LG phones doesn't work like the rest of Android phones. On some LG phones, you set the brightness to a certain level and the auto brightness will work around that particular level.
Say you have it at 75% brightness and auto brightness on, the level will go up to maybe about 85% while outdoors and maybe to about 65% in a dim room. Set it at 35% brightness with auto brightness on, the level goes up to 45% in a bright area and 25% in a dark area. That's how my old iPhone 4 used to work.

The way you described the functionality is what I have witnessed mine doing. I had to play around with it for a few days before I figured out what it was doing. No matter which level of brightness I set, auto brightness will adjust up and down from there based on ambient lighting. I do like having this option since it basically lets you further tweak the auto brightness to a comfortable level. On my other phones, a lot of the times the auto brightness was either to bright or too dark compared to what I would have preferred.
I thought there was something wrong with the auto brightness on mine as well. I have it on 70% auto bright set and it never seems to change. I have a screen protector but it has cutouts around the camera and other sensors and ear piece so I knew it wasn't that and I also tested it prior to putting the screen protector on.
Seems odd that LG would go a different route on what auto brightness is compared to the rest of the Android OEM's. sort of defeats the purpose but perhaps that is why we have to keep the setting so high to begin with.

I got mine to work. Its kinda strange. I was playing around and I shot a video as I played the video back I hit the menus button and there is a setting for auto dimming so I check it and my phone dimmed so then I checked to see if my main auto brightness would work so I went into settings and checked auto bright there too and the screen dimmed. Havent been outside yet but before this the setting did nothing see if you guys can get it to work on yours.

No, it's right way because brightness sensor works different than human eye and like was said here other phones usually set brightness too dim or too bright using that sensor.
I also think the work Auto Brightness is on the phone E980 strange ... I do not see any change in brightness depending on the ambient light ... Not like all the other android phones

If that is the case, why is there no effect of ambient light on the screen??? The brightness remains the same whatever be the light condition.
I thought my phone had the same issue as everyone else but noticed this weekend when I stepped into a very bright area my screen automatically adjusted the brightness to a higher setting.

Mine has worked from day one and better than my GnoteII I upgraded from... As others have said, it's configured around the amount of brightness you originally set it to.
