Windows 6.5 mobile embedded emulator? - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

I have handhelds at work that run Windows 6.5 mobile embedded. eSOMS from ventyx is what we use. I would like to 1. have better hardware meaning faster CPU and bigger screen. 2. Android functionality for additional things like google glasses etc. 3. some kind of reader program to be able to have procedures etc.
Is there ANY way to do something like this. I have been searching on here and google searching and have come up with bumpkiss.
I can't believe with the money we spend on tech we are stuck with these pieces of garbage.
I believe an emulator that runs on android will do everything I want but don't see any.

Not one reply? Someone must know how to do this...

How much money would it be worth to have something like this made?

VMWare For WM6?

I work in software packaging... and I use VMWare a lot for different builds etc.
I was wondering if there was such an application for mobile phones. like VMWARE that I could test ROMs on etc. before putting onto my phone?
Apologies if posted in the wrong spot etc.
Regards.
That WOULD be a useful tool, such as an emulator??
Dont the windows mobile 6 sdk tools come with this sort of thing ? But I dont know if u can load a rom from here into it. But I know it comes with a base rom to use for testing, if your developing with Visual Studio or something.

Correct, the emulator bundled with the SDK is only for testing programs which will run on it.
What we want is a virtual device which will act just like the hermes hardware, that way we can test unbricking techiques etc...
Something like this would indeed be a huge step for developers and cooks.
VM for WM
All you need are the environmental configuration details, ie the parameters that for the sys config and build out the vmx file.
There's no way you'd get assistance from VMware on this, ut if you think about it there are what ... 12 pre-set environments in VM-WK6?
I reckon if you debug one of these, hack away at the profile, RAM, cpu requirements (cycles, Hz, etc, etc) then you are most of the way there.
There is only a finite amount of environmental configurations, it's about controlling those.
Have a look at the VMware site, go to virtual appliances, and see how people have built the base out on some of the simpler appliances

That's not quite with the topic here. From what I got out of that is they are working on running 2 operating systems on 1 phone. Not something like a hermes emulator.

android - windows 6.? - winmo

I currently have a diamond and am looking for a new h/s.
the important things for me are fast surfing, simple enough interface with the ability to modify the themes etc (sliders, curtains etc), fast switching between apps and video capabilities.
can anyone explain in laymans terms the benefits, advantages and clear disadvantages between android - windows 6.(whatever) - and winmo.
im after either the hero, tgo1, diamond 2.
what could people suggest?
Ps - im not too interested in flashing and putting cooked/kitchen roms or whatever else onto them. Purely out of the box set-up
Linux has the advantage of being reasonable easy to program for is “Open Source” so no licence to pay for and normally cheaper for the manufacturers to use and has quite a large following that likes to create applications/modifications for the phone.
Windows is controlled my the evil corporation Microsoft and wants your soul before you can use it….or at least some seem to think so, windows mobile has more flavours (ROMS) available on this site than Microsoft could produce for a very long time, devices never meant to run latter versions of windows mobile are now quite happily running newer software thanks to various cooks who like to improve or tweak the standard fair to produce something they think is better…some are, some aren’t.
From what you’re asking you seem to want to know what’s best, sadly the simple answer is both
Its more a user choice if you have certain software you want to run then check the handset can run both if not pick the one that can, there is no clear leader at the moment and as your not interested in upgrading your phone to a newer flavour your stuck with whatever the provider thinks is good.
Simple answer then look at what you like, check it runs what you want, purchase the phone best of luck
Fair point indeed.
looks like ill be hunting through reviews for a little while yet.
thanks for the reply

EVO 4G on Windows Mobile

When are we gonna see a ROM flashable on the EVO 4G with Windows Mobile? People say WinMo is going out but Andriod has too many limits for me right now.
never

Why not get an HD2?
For the love of god I hope we will never see such a horrendous thing. Good god man.

What limits? I'm curious...
lets see here... I can choose an MP3 song as a ringtone and not have it get cut off.
I can find and download a lot of games and not have to pay 4 it. I can use remote desktop with not a lot of configuration and 3rd party apps. Should I go on????
You can do all that with android dude...
Something tells me no one is going to try to do this. WinMo is about as bad as Blackberry OS IMO.
As someone else said, why didn't you get an HD2? It's the almost same phone but it also has the WinMo from 1999 that you love so much.
Sounds more like you are just too comfortable with WinMo, and are afraid to step outside of your box and really learn Android. I'll take Android over WinMo anyday. Talk about limitations... not to mention lack of reliability.
As someone who owns a HD2 and a Evo, I have no idea why you would want to use WinMo, 6.5 is as glitchy as 5.0 was as CE was years ago when the MDA and pre-MDA devices were the new and upcoming thing. Whatever I was able to do on a WinMo device I can do on an Android device, you just have to google it.
Aren't we still waiting on a decent media player for Android?
I've been using TuneWiki, works fine for me.
You probably right but the HD2 is totally out since it is for T-mobile. I have Sprint. I had my GF get the EVO and it is a really nice phone but you cannot do everything you could do in WinMo.
I've gotten really good at the internet searching thing and hasnt been anything I could not find. From what I can see I love the phone the EVO.
What people forget is that phones are just small PCs. And Microsoft never changes. Explanation: Microsoft has long come out with OSs that were resource hogs=too much for the systems of the times. It is this reason I see why there is always more issues (in a lot of cases as well as user error) on the Windows platform. It is no different in Windows Mobile. I find my phone behaves like every PC I have worked on and the fixes have been the same. i.e. virus removal maybe, free up used resources, add more space, remove certain 3rd party apps (this is to a large extent a problem for WinMo. If software code was written bad it can cause issues in the OS.) , or total refresh.
WinMo is only bad cause we like to put alot of stuff on our phones. Also no 1 created like 1 good solution for certain problems. 4 instances media playback. You had to find several solutions in order to be able to play all the Video formats....by the way this has not changed with Android. Also as of now if you like having movies on phone will need even more space if you using Android due the being limited to playing mp4/h264 vids. Mp4 is still good but Xvid still has better compression/quallity ratio.
Since using my GF's EVO and having to install numerous apps to do stuff she got used to in WinMo I notice a performance difference so really the game has not changed. Android is what...Linux right.
I know linux too and it does have lower overhead to run but linux still after being around for awhile still has work to do. Ever has to deal with Kernel changes? Can be a real pain in anus when you get your Linux nice with cube running and everything and that new better kernel comes out and 80% if not 100% of the time you have to start over.
Linux is more ideal for smaller devices because of its smaller footprint but as devices are now getting better.......I've seen linux being used in vending machines (ever unplug 1 and plug back in and see it boot up on the screen?)
Having had both WinMo and Android, I cannot tell you how many times I had to reboot my WinMo devices (not from having too many apps either), versus my Android devices due to system freezes. Simply put, I can count on one hand how many times I've had to reboot my Android devices involuntarily, and still have a couple of fingers to spare.

I wonder if the sampling rate is appropriate here: android devices have much more power and RAM than the older WinMo devices. My Uni is awesome, but slow. My Supersonic (EVO) is awesome and fast, but is it the OS, or 5 years of hardware advancements and the gobs of RAM?

idk, I'm just regurgitating something I read on another post here on XDA, that androind was still waiting for a TCMP type media player that handles it all.
As a new user to the Android OS, the ONLY thing I feel the platform is lacking is a good music player that has at least a 10 band equalizer like what's on TCPMP on my other phones. Until Android gets that, I'll continue to use my Palm Treo 700p as my MP3 player.

WM 6.5 emulator for WP7 ? Possable ?

Just a discussion came up and made me wonder if this is even possable. This is the place to ask, so here we go.
All WP7 models seem to run at 1ghz or higher, thinking the concept that WM 6.5 runs pretty well on hardware that runs at 400-528mhz range. Would it be possable to have a emulator that runs on the platform so you can run 6.1/6.5 on a WP7 phone ? This would allow you to be able to run some older apps with still having WP7.
I would not expect intense games (maybe a card game ok) to run at full speed or anything but, things like Remote desktop and other base apps might be ok with this.
This type of thing would run on any phone (with 1ghz+ hardware) just depending on if all the hardware is supported.
Or I guess there might be a way to "shut down" 7 and open 6.5 kind of how Android runs on the TP2.
The emulator idea came up because it might be able to run on any model with minor updates vs. a boot up just for one phone.
Just some ideas...even if it is possable.
Thanks for reading and dreaming (well I am still waiting for a Verizon WP7 phone)
No sorry, the emulator runs on the x86 architecture, not on ARM.

Maybe I'm misreading the original question, but it sounds like he is asking if it were possible to have an app that would run old Windows Mobile apps, kind of like Classic on WebOS.
well at present we (3rd party) developers wouldn't be able to make something like this as all the APIs don't actually exist. someone with knowledge of the whole code base of windows phone 7 could probably do it but i doubt we'll see it happen. if there are programs you need on windows phone 7, it is definitely faster to just have it redone. it's really only the UI that needs redoing, if it was written in VB or C#, a lot of the code will still work.

Windows Mobile 6.1 (launched) for Windows Phone

Ok, now DreamForceTeam launched Windows Mobile 6.1 on Windows Phone 7 (HTC 7 Pro) and showed that on the movie (what is next ?):
Now this shows how terrible windows mobile was. I would do this on my trophy, but seeing how putting a laggy os on a phone designed for wp7 is so pointless, I'd rather put windows phone (hopefully tango) on wm devices.
Yessss, with this we may have the chance of using FpseCE on WP7!
Agree

Very well said, couldn't agree more. The fact you can do something doesn't mean you should. I was a WM 6.5 fan but would NEVER go back to that after over a year with the constantly improving WP7.

You know...the video shows pretty good performance over all on it. Yea, 6.1 was a dog but, There is still a hanful of apps I would use on it that there is no WP7 app for.
If this was downloadable, I would download it to try it. It would be nice to bring back some App memories...
Is this only on a custom rom ?
That's sort of nostalgic. But like I'd never put Windows 95 on my current computers, I would also never go back to the Windows Mobile days. Sick of constant lock ups, bad memory management, overall laggy behaviour and such. If I wanted to use Windows Mobile again, I'd rather buy an HD2 from craigslist or eBay than flash it on my WP device.
If we could use equalizers and audio effects, I would love to see dual boot.

Did you even watch the video ? He was running ON TOP of WP7, at one point in the video he hit back and it jumped back to WP7.
If it's like shown, an emulator, I'm great with it, if I have to flash my device, screw it, dont want it.
If I can dump 6.1 on my WP7 device to run when I want to, it opens a whole world of 10+ years of Apps that will run on it (and there is a lot more of 6.0+ apps than there is WP7 apps)
I would want to dowload it and install cabs to it, if I can't do that, then I have no needs for it.
I would much rather use an emulator on my phone than waste $150-200 on a HD2 that ran Windows Mobile 6.5 anyway.

I do miss the equalizers I had loaded on WM 6.X. I miss them a great deal. It is the one thing I am still waiting for in WP7. I have found replacements for most all of the other apps I used on WM over the last few months.

I gotta admit that I didn't watch the video. I just assumed it was the one I found over at Twitter last night where a modified bootloader was shown that started WM on a WP device. An emulator would certainly be nice to play with. But I don't see me using it for more than just bringing back some nostalgic thoughts.
I dont see the reason for the hate....it may not make sense to run win95 on currrent hardware but u cant apply the same logic when wp7 is missing features/apps wm had.

I wouldn't call it hate. Lack of comprehension maybe. If I felt Windows Phone was missing features and/or apps I was really dependent on, I simply hadn't bought into it.

It would rock to have Garmin Mobile XT up and running via this loader on WP7. I'm still running WM6.5 because of this software.
This will prove very useful for running emulators, flash, and legacy apps. Don't dis it. It's an app, not a flashed os. I'm wondering, though, if they could use any of the code from this to develop an android emulator. I mean, my windows phone rocks, but extra compatibility is always welcome. Keep it up DFT
i would use just to trick people into thinking i flashed it onto my focus
