Help with AT&T S3 in Canada PLEASE!!! - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Hey guys how are you all today? I have a quick question... I have rooted and installed MANY custom Roms on MANY different devices.... but never came across this problem yet. I live in Canada and I recently purchased yet another S3, but it is a US model i747 from AT&T.... now my question is, can I install stock rooted Bell or Rogers firmware on the device? Im currently running CM11 and it is a great ROM, however, when I had my S4 I was running Foxhound ROM and loved it as it was the best of both worlds. Now I would like to go back to a stock rooted ROM and use Xposed Framework so I can keep the stock Touchwiz functions, but would like to customize it to give it the AOSP look. So, am I able to flash stock rooted Bell firmware on an AT&T deviceƉ I know this is a newbie question but ive never owned a US device before so I never encountered this problem. Thank you all in advance for helping me clarify this.... Ive tried searching but didnt come up with a solid answer through search. Thanks again.
Jeff

Anybody

Do you have the 4.3 bootloader on your phone? If you do, flashing an older bootloader will brick the phone.
I would not try to flash a stock Canadian ROM as that may also brick your phone because the Canadian and US models appear to use different bootloaders.

Thank you for the reply dude.... no Im running cm11 4.4.2 but on MG2 bootloader... if this helps? I just figured that since the devices are basically the same and you can flash the same custom ROMS that you could POSSIBLY flash stock rooted ROMS from either country as well. You think its possible? Thanks again in advance for the reply!!
Jeff

Going along with what audit13 was saying, you should be safe as long as the ROM doesn't install a modem/baseband or bootloader.
Without the modem and bootloader the ROMs are interchangeable for the i747 and i747M.
If you install a Canadian bootloader there is an excellent chance you will brick your phone.

Thanks again for the info... and on that note I believe I will just forget about flashing Canadian ROM.... better safe than sorry, right!? Thanks guys for all your help!!

[Q] Help install Stock Rom issue via Odin

Hi there!
I have a Galaxy S3 SGH T999 version. It has Tmobile rom, but I am trying to install windmobile stock rom via odin (3.07 - tried other older versions) and it fails the secure check.
Is there way to resolve this? I really want to install the stock windmoile rom , and did lot of searching and couldn't really find a lot of info, except that someone with AT&T galaxy S3 had same issue when installing Rogers rom.
I would really appreciate it, thank you!

If you continue trying to ODIN flash firmware which is not intended for your specific phone
you will end up with a nice shiny brick sooner or later, in your case it will be sooner.
If you want the appearance of a windows phone, the best way to do it is to find themes and
launchers which make the phone look like a winmobile phone.
There are a lot of themes and launchers at the play store which do exactly what you are looking for.
Check it out B4 it's too late..
It's not a windows phone style, I think you misunderstood me.
I just don't like T-mobile rom and its bloatware. The windmobile rom is more clean.
Both phones models are same, exact. I don't see how it would be bricked. It's just a mismatch of bootloader, thus secure check fails. I've seen people with windmobile SGH T999V flash T-mobile rom, and it works perfectly.
It's just SGH T999 tmobile version isn't able to install SGH T999V (windmobile, mobilicity) canadian variant roms because of some block T-mobile setup. Some people had done this, but didn't specificy how though.
I would like to know that please.
If you don't like bloat, then remove it. Don't flash another carrier's rom.

[Q] TMO GS3 : Will unlock go away if updated or installed 4.2.2 rom?

I've galaxy s3 for tmobile and it is currently on 4.1.1 T999UVDLJA.
I followed this method to unlock it and right now I am using the phone on H2OWireless (MVNO on AT&T network), everything is working fine (not tested data plan yet).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=34661189&postcount=1
Now my question is if I upgrade the OS in future to say stock from TMO 4.1.2 (when they release) or non-stock 4.2.2 rom then will my unlock go away or it is factory unlocked now?

No, once your phone is unlocked it stays that way regardless of flashing any roms.
Flashing roms has no effect on the locked or unlocked status of the phone.
Even a OTA update has no effect on the locked or unlocked status of the phone.

Are you sure? Because this is different method than entering an unlocked provider by service provider. I just want to make sure before I step out of 4.1.1. And again it's possible to move back to stock right? Is there anything like iphone where you must have SHA BLOBS to get back to a specific version? I am an iphone guy and getting first time handson android phone litterally!
I tried getting one from tmobile but since I am not a tmobile customer the refused.

Yes you can go back to the stock rom by Odin flashing your phone at any time.
Doing that has no effect on the phone's locked or unlocked status.
Sorry I have no idea about the iphone's BLOBS

Can you help or direct me to any link on this forum which lists all custom ROMs for TMO GS3 please.
And if possible in your opinion which would be the best? (I know it's wide scope question but if you can help that would be great )

Here is a link for a lot of Tmobile custom roms. Any of the custom roms there will work with a
Tmobile S3 locked or unlocked phone or a AT&T S3 unlocked phone: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1645
My personal preference for custom rom is the "Wicked v9.1" rom.
In my opinion after flashing all other custom roms for Tmobile T999 phones the "Wicked v9.1"
custom rom is clearly the best rom which is currently available for our phones.
It's not only the most trouble free & reliable custom rom but cosmetically speaking it looks like a retail commercial product.
I would recommend that you flash that first, check out all it's features and options carefully then make a nandroid backup.
Here is the link to the Wicked v9.1 custom rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1804260
After doing that flash a lot of the other roms which are available and check those out so you can have a better idea
as to what the differences are after doing a lot of comparing.
Good Luck!

[Q] Best Rom option for running AT&T phone on T-Mobile

So I am new to GSM phones anyway but I just got an AT&T GSIII and I am using it on T-Mobile. I am a Sprint user initially (rooted Gnexus) and testing T-Mobile in an area I frequent to compare if it is worth switching.
My questions is I am already downloading the root kit and ready to run a ROM but should I use a T-Mobile Rom or an AT&T Rom. Also not sure if I should be asking this in the AT&T general section. Any advice would be great.
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!
The T-Mobile Roms for the GSIII should work on AT&T. That's what i heard. And the kernels too btw.

If you are on the tmobile network, flash tmobile roms, if you are on the at&t network flash AT&T roms for best results.
Just be sure that if your phone is an AT&T I747 Galaxy S3 even if it's unlocked only flash AT&T modems/radios and
if your phone is an T999 Tmobile S3 never flash a AT&T modem/radio but only flash T999 Tmobile modem/radios.

So I am safe to flash any t-mobile rom as long as I avoid the radios? What is this multi carrier stuff I have read? Sorry still reading the forums before really leaping into the root and flashing.
I would really like to go PA and TWRP as that is what I am most familiar with.
Thanks for the responses.

Multi-Carrier will flash either of the phones, AT&T I747 or Tmobile T999, the rom installer will automatically
detect which phone you have and flash the proper rom. These multi-carrier roms are all custom roms which
require your phone to be rooted and have TWRP/CWM recovery installed.
As long as you never use Odin for flashing and always use CWM or TWRP when you flash roms you will never
have to worry about flashing /radios modems, or flashing the wrong one.
All the custom roms found here in XDA do not come with the modem/radio images but instead they use the
modem/radio image which is already in your phone.
If you want to flash any custom roms you will have to root the phone and install twrp or cwm recovery first.
Without doing that you can only flash stock roms which require the Odin windows software.
Good luck!

[Q] SGH-i747M rom on SGH-i747

Hey guys.. I'm new to this forum and to flashing ROMs and all that so I need your help..
I used the search option and didn't find a clear answer to this..
I have bought about a month ago an at&t SGS3 SGH-i747 and I am not very happy with the current OS (android 4.1.1 at&t stock ROM) and I want to upgrade it to 4.1.2. After searching google a bit i found out that there IS an official 4.1.2 android from at&t for my device and wherever I go they say to go to settings, about device, software update and update my phone from there but it says that there is no update.
I have searched for a ROM on sammobile and only found a 4.0.4 ROM for my phone.
However, I found out that there is a 4.1.2 ROM for SGS3 SGH-i747M, and some people say that their ROMs will work on my device and some say they won't.
Can someone tell me, if I install a Rogers (for example) i747M ROM on my device will it work without problem? I don't want to stay with the at&t ROM because it has too many limitations on them.
I prefer not to install custom ROMs because they are all a bit unstable..
Sorry if I have bad English, tried my best..
First off an (att) rom will work with a (rogers) phone. I'm using one right now.
Secondly, if you do manage to install a (rogers) rom on your s3 it will probably be missing apn settings and you'll have rogers apps.
Lastly, through my experience with custom roms, I have found that they are far more stable then stock, if you're looking for a good custom touchwiz rom. Look at hyperdrive

What you are describing on Sammobile are the stock firmwares that are flashed through a program called Odin. If you tried flashing a Rogers image, you could potentially brick your phone, or as the user above said, there would be a lot of issues since that is not the firmware for AT&T. Are you rooted? If you are, that is what is causing the upgrade issue, since you have to be 100% stock.

Thanks for your answer. Well, if you say that custom roms are more stable than stock, I won't argue. Just some friends told me otherwise.

Btw, I don't care if ill have Rogers apps or AT&T apps, they are both useless to me. I just don't want to brick my phone.

I didn't flash a Rogers rom because I couldn't find a clear answer that says that it will not brick my phone. I just seen some people ask about it and didn't get an answer either. I have tried to unroot and flash a stock rom from "samsung-updates.com", a 4.1.1. Its the same as the one that I already had. Still, no update available.

If you flash a ODIN package for rogers on an AT&T phone you may brick it due to bootloader and modem
if you flash a custom zip based on an AT&T rom from XDA you won't brick since they don't contain bootloader or a modem

[RESOLVED] Bootloader Status with SGH i747 LTE Latest Firmware

Hello,
I'm relarively new to the Galaxy S3 realm, and after a brief experience with a defective SGH T999 that I returned for a refund (which I'm pretty sure shipped with an unlocked bootloader out of the box since T-Mobile is usually good with doing that with their devices), I'm thinking of getting an SGH i747 new and networked unlocked on Amazon for use with T-Mobile since the SGH i747 is the least expensive S3 variant out there with LTE capabilities. I don't want to actually make the purchase until I know these two things:
1) Can the bootloader be unlocked on the latest official firmware (which I believe is 4.3 according to my research)? If so, how?
2) If I can unlock the bootloader on the latest official firmware, what ROMs will I be able to use? I read somewhere that using a ROM designed for an different stock firmware can lead to problems (like how 4.0 firmware users can't use 4.1 firmware ROMs)
I'm hoping I can get this since it has great features for the money, but if I can't install ROMs on it, I'm going to have to look for a different device to purchase.
Thanks ahead of time!
EDIT: I found an article stating there was an All In One toolkit that would root, bootloader unlock, and install recovery for US variant galaxy S3's, and it linked to me to an XDA thread. However, after reading the XDA thread, it seems that it is only able to unlock bootloaders of Nexus devices. Can anyone confirm for me that this all in one toolkit can unlock the bootloader for the latest firmware of the ATT S3?

all s3i747 should already be bootloader unlocked. i bricked my first one trying to "unlock" the bootloader.lol. kind of.
as far as firmware i am assuming you mean bootloader/modem. once you are on NE4 and above firmware , trying to downgrade ,i.e. mj2 firmware will give you a nice looking paper weight.
custom ROMs ; flash away (after making a backup of course). i have never seen a custom ROM include the bootloader/firmware. although you need to always read the OP to make sure it is compatible with whatever your current firmware is.,i.e.(again) if its a ROM for nj2 your ne4 firmware may need to be upgraded to match. @audit13 or @dawgdoc can confirm/deny/provide more info i am sure.
hope this helps at least some.
good luck.

Looking in the all in one toolkit, it gives the user the option to root, busybox, and install custom recovery on a 4.3 ATT S3. From my knowledge, one needs an unlocked bootloader to install custom recoveries. Unless this is some sort of special recovery, it seems to me that this is in fact unlocked. Perhaps another user can confirm this.
thats why i mentioned audit13 and dawgdoc earlier. both more knowledgeable than me and i was hoping they would chyme in. or @DocHoliday77.

The bootoader is not locked. If you try to unlock it using software tools, you will brick it. I have never come across anyone on xda with an att s3 with a locked bootoader but I have come across a few that bricked their phone trying to unlock the bootoader.
Although att often locks the bootoader on their phones (e.g. note 3, s4, lg g2), they did not do this on the sgh-i747.
Once the phone is running the mjb or higher bootoader, you cannot flash an older bootoader.
Alright, thanks to both of you guys for the assistance. Just let out a huge breath of relief, I was scared my money went to waste. Can't wait for this to come in, and I'm eager to be a part of the i747 community on XDA!
Plus I got the red one
If you decide to flash anything to the phone, make sure you verify the bootloader version before flashing anything.
When you receive the phone, boot into download mode to confirm the model # as well.

Yes, I do recall reading something about only being able to flash ROMs made for the specific bootloader of the phone. But if I were to flash a ROM for d2lte (designed to work with ALL Galaxy S3 models), I would assume it would work alright regardless of bootloader version?

Well, d2lte and d2att roms.
There are a few quirks about particular roms, do not hesitate to ask more questions as they arise. Sometimes you will contradicting answers, or typos causing incorrect answers.
Just an update, the S3 arrived. Looks beautiful physically.
But beyond that...

That's a nice state to receive an i747. Before doing any updates to bootloader and modem or flashing any ROMs I would suggest doing the free sim unlock found in the forums. (Yes, even though the bootloader is unlocked the sim card does not come unlocked out of the box.) If you upgrade to the 4.3 bootloader or newer you will no longer be able to do the free sim unlock. Although there are always paid unlocks.
