Thus far I have used stock rooted and Pro Bam with my N7. The ROMS all work fine with their included kernels. However, whenever I try to use another kernel like glitch of Elemental X I get weird colors while the ROM is booting (Kind of like static). Then the colors are all tweaked when it finishes booting. I have tried overclocking, underclocking, and stock settings. But the issue persists until I reflash the original kernel that came with the ROM.
I am fairly baffled by this one. Any ideas?

Okay I noticed this from very early development of any Jellybean Rom, like Paranoid Android, then CM10 kangs, then CNA up till 3.4.1 ( thought it would have cleared up by now). Every time I unlock the device it flashes red. I'm not sure how to explain this without sounding insane but here it goes. I unlock the device and it flashes red for a split second then the lockscreen comes up just fine. Doesn't happen every time but I notice the more I stay on one Rom the more frequently it happens to the point that by the second day it always happens. The flash happens only on about 2/3 of the screen diagonally. Happens way to quick for a screenshot but it's defiantly noticeable and annoying. Thanks for any help.
fyi...
I wiped
CNA 3.4.1
Franco.Kernel r246.
I have not noticed that when flashing to Cyanogens CM10.

That's what happens when you use custom colors in a kernel. That's the color profile being applied.
Don't use custom (Trinity, etc) colors and you won't get the flash.
I have seen a red flash once or twice but don't know which ROM it was in or whether it was a Roms stock kernel or the only other kernel I have ever used which is trinity.
I have tried out several Roms including...
Androidme
liquid
CNA
Rasbean

I want to thank all of you for your replies. i am running franco.kernel r246 w/ 384gpu, i will try with the stock kernel just to make sure it's not the kernel as i've never had problems w/ farnco's kernel. i will try new cm10 builds & i will do some tests to further investigate what could be causing the red flash. i believe it's related to the lockscreen shortcuts but am not sure completely. thanks.
Hi I am new to rom and kernel flashing, and I am interested in flashing the ElementalX 1.1 kernel on AOKP. I love AOKP, and I am way interested in the swipe-to-wake and double-tap-to-wake features of ElementalX 1.1.
What kinds of things do I need to know about compatibility between kernels and Roms? Can you typically use any kernel with any rom?
Loving the Nexus experience and looking forward to learning more!
They often can but not always.
Android versions need to match.
Usually you can flash any kernel on any ROMs but if its a CM based ROM and you flash a custom kernel then slimport features sometimes don't work or some times you flash a custom kernel then the boot animation gets cut and turns black it doesn't really matter I have done lots of flashing and I would say that every kernel can be a flashed with any ROM without problems I am currently on CM kang and using kernel elemental x and everything runs smooth..hope this help click thankksss
Don't just slap any kernel to your device you might seriously brick it.....learned this lesson when I had an Atrix4G.....

Nexus devices are different then the Atrix4G. You can not seriously brick it by flashing an incompatible kernel. Even having no kernel will not prevent you from accessing the bootloader and recovery.
Ive been using the dark flo version if cm10.2 since I got my nexus 7, however when ive tried to install a custom kernel, I get a blue/turquoise screen upon reboot. Ive tried both CAF and normal versions of various kernels, but all with the same results. I tried using the AOSP kernel setting in the aroma installer, then installed some AOSP kernels, which do boot but it has the worst lag ive ever seen since my iPhone! Anyone else experienced this and know a solution? Ive searched the forum but couldn't find anything relevant
Same here: installed CM10.2 unofficial, GApps, rebooted and everything´s fine.
After installing any of the Faux-Kernels (es/m/u) and wiping Dalvik etc., I have the same screen problems and lags, which make the device unusable.
I´m searching for an overclock kernel, btw.
Thanks for your input!
im after the same thing, just an oc kernel. I even tried one with no mods, just the cpu speeds increased and had no luck
UPDATE - I read somewhere that some kernels wont work with CM versions released after oct 2nd. I tried installing a copy of dark flo from the end of September, then tried faux123's latest mainline kernel abd it booted fine! Im assuming its an incompatibility with the latest CM, so I hope the kernels get updated soon!
Thank you for the info!:good:
It´s waiting time again...
how did you get out of the turquoise screen?
Easy fix:
Uninstall CM
Install AOSP based rom
Profit
Seriously, CM has gone to crap since they moved away from aosp and started with CAF. Kernel devs shouldn't have to do extra work just for one rom, especially when said rom is going from bad to worse

Faux Kernel
Hello,
First, sorry for my bad english, I'm french.
I try to install this kernel in the Cm 10.2/11, but, one time I reboot the tablet, google logo appear, then, blue screen appear.
Do you have a solution? Need CM on my N7 13.
Thank's
Only certain kernels support cm

ElementalX will not work on AOSP or CM roms; installing it will either brick them or cause random reboots.

Actually elemental x will work on aosp based ROMs.
The only kernals you can use on cm are ones that are compatible with them and elemental x doesnt work on cm.

I stand corrected.
You need a kernel that's says CAF compatible. Try glitch kernel, very good. Also I'd suggest reading more before doing things that could potentaly brick your device. Hope you made a backup first.
Hello everyone. I was just wondering what people were using for a good performance custom rom and kernel. Atm I'm using the stock pie software and NSFW-Kernel 25 custom kernel. The phone keeps freezing on me and rebooting. Not sure if this is because I'm using custom kernel with stock os? Thanks for all the help I've gotten in this forum on my rooting adventure, you all are the best and I appreciate it.
I'm using Pixel Dust ROM with King Kernel flashed. Wiped my phone and clean installed everything, works smoothly and quickly.

I'm also using Pixel Dust ROM with it's own Kernel. I also wipe the phone and clean install everything from start, not using the restore feature. I sync Contacts, Calendar and Tasks between the phone and MS Office 2016 using MyPhoneExplorer (free App). Phone history and texts are not transferred but I keep a copy on the PC through MyPhoneExplorer.
This type of clean install has always given me the best results for performance and a stable phone no matter which custom ROM I try.
The best way to find out is to start flashing ROMs and see which one you like best. What I like or feel is the best will be subjective. Try them all and see what fits you best.
Thanks for all the feedback. I was thinking of trying lineage os, but I don't think v15 is pie and v16 that's based on pie isn't out yet I believe. Also was gonna try the elemental x kernel.
That kernel is good if you are on stock. It can act odd on certain ROMs other than stock.
