Alarm? - Galaxy Tab 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, so, I have noticed - and not just my tablet - but every android device I have ever had, the alarm has failed to go off in the morning, even though it's set. it will go off if you set it for a few minutes, maybe hours, but if you leave an alarm to go off by itself at an important time, it fails you. I wake up, and the notification is in my notification saying "Alarm set for xx:00 AM" and I tap it, and THEN it goes off, even saying that the alarm was set for the whatever the time was when I tapped the notification. USELESS. same thing on my phone, and my previous phone. Is this something with android or what? I need to sort this out or I am going to end up being late for something really important!

My alarm has only failed to go off if the case is closed. It's a minor inconvenience, but I just leave the case open so the alarm actually goes off.

I agree, if you are using a case with a magnet that turns your Tab screen on and off, you need to leave the cover open when using the alarm function .
Sent from my SM-T310 using xda app-developers app

Not only magnets but the cover itself turns the screen off.
Took out both magnets from the cover and still screen goes black when closing it, same story with alarm - screen needs to be uncovered to have alarm sound in the morning

Well....I did enjoy the extra hour and 1/2 sleep I got the first time I used it with the case closed!

I really think this is a major flaw on an otherwise great tab.

I have the 315 with a TPU case (no Cover).. and the alarm performs great every time. Never failed me yet..*** knock wood***

Are you guys using the built-in stock alarm clock? Download one from the Play Store. I have never had this problem on the Android platform, but then again I have never used the built-in alarm clock. I also don't use a case but I fail to see how that would make a difference.

Unreliable alarm clock

I'm using the stock alarm program and 3/5 times I've set an alarm nothing has happened when the alarm is supposed to go off. It always works when I set it to go off the next minute as a test case, but it's very unreliable for overnight use.
Any similar experiences or thoughts on why this happens?
Mines never not worked used it every day since I had the phone - I assume you are leaving the phone switched on right?
Did you kill the alarm&clock app (with Taskiller for example) ? This app needs to be active if you want it to work.
Mine works. Screen goes to sleep, alarm wakes it and me up no sweat.
Sorry, I actually figured it out right after posting, but yes the app is probably being closed sometime during the night. I put it on my ignore lists, it's too bad the alarm isn't some sort of a system service.

Try using alarm clock plus from market. It's a much improved alarm.

[Q] Desktop Dock - How do I stop the Desk Clock launching?

I have just purchased the official Galaxy SII Desktop Dock. I'm new to Android but I have switched to using Launcher Pro as my launcher and I'm wondering if there is any way to stop the device switching over to the Samsung "Desk Clock" application when it is placed in the desktop dock. Every time I hit the Home button when the device is in the Dock, the Desk Clock application comes to front, rather than the default launcher. I prefer not to use the Desk Clock application.
In the manual for the Desktop Dock it states:
"You can set whether to launch the Desk Clock application on your phone when you connect a Samsung phone to the desktop dock. For more information about the Dock settings, see your phone user manual."
I can't seem to find any reference to this. I'm hoping it's just my ignorance.
The only reference to "Dock Settings" I can find in the full user guide (from the Samsung website) doesn't say much:
Dock settings● Audio output mode: Set to use the connected dock’s speaker when your device is connected to a car or desktop dock.
And that's it... no mention of the Desk Clock
Thanks. That's exactly what I found.
There has to be some way to stop the home button from displaying this special mode when it is in the desktop dock.
Dock No-Op did the trick.
Should have spotted this before but I'm new to Android and still getting used to the fact that the Market has a lot more than I'm used to with my last phone, which was a Windows Mobile
Does that mean that it doesn't show that clock after some number of minutes of idle in the dock? Even with the brightness turned all the way down that thing is way to bright at night.
Have you tried Kaloer Clock...? It's the mutts, and you can customise it till the cows come home (inc your desired brightness....)
Great app really works and prevent to sleep the phone...the only question is: can I damage (burn out) pixels when using it whole night and every night?

Which app...Kaloer Clock? You can set it to run in screensaver mode to prevent this....
To prevent what??? BTW when I woke up this morning SGS2 slept so the system still lock phone and turn off the screen even when I ticked prevent phone from sleep or something like this in kaloer settings...any suggestion???
edit: you're right!!! in screensaver mode the time is every two minutes or so changes position whoooo cant wait for dock...

You would only possibly get burn in if it were to stay put in the same position...I say possibly, because I'm sure the Sammy techies would've thought about this and tested for it because it is an obvious concern to have.
When the clock's screensaver mode kicks in though, the time moves every minute or two as you noted, so there will be zero chance of any burn in of the screen.
I use Kaloer Clock though, so I'm not sure about the standard Sammy desktop clock coming on by itself in the night...maybe it's a setting in there that makes it wake on the hour or something...don't know tbh, but it won't be doing any damage.

yea i push the sleep button but through the night the phone screen wakes when fully charged, as i am sleeping this means i cant put it back to sleep, therefore clock comes on after a while and thus for the rest of the night.
but i love the feature and would have no problem with it if not for burn in.
as for Willie_Heckerslyke's comments it is logical that sammy would have tested this as feature has been put on the phone.
Will having the S2 attached to the official dock all the time when being at home affect battery life?
Feel like spamming every dock thread with this question.
I don't think that it has a big affect on the battery. But the worst thing that could possibly happen is that you'll need a new battery in a year. So i wouldn't care about that
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
I see, but how come the phone shows the popup "Battery is fully charged, remove it..." .. I mean, why even show it then?
I don't own a dock but i guess its the counter part of "your phone is fully charged. Unplug it"
I'm not sure but i guess it decalibrates the battery more if you charge it longer than necessary. And maybe reduces the max capacity of the battery a tiny bit every time. But this won't stop me feom charging my phone overnight.
Btw: i do have a very unhealthy charging habit.. i always put the phone next to my pillow without airplane mode or so.. if it catches fire while charging (i read that could theoretically happen) i've got a problem too.. :-/ so i should be more worried about my health than my battery's..
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
Thanks for your help and sarcasm. I will from now on, charge it during the night, get up at 4 am unplug the phone and go back to sleep. Will have a glass of water next to me in case, as you said, a fire starts and I need to cool out.

Alarm issues - not sounding?

This all started yesterday morning. I had my alarm set, woke up later than I needed to with a notification on the phone that said Alarm Turned Off After 10 Minutes, telling me the alarm had gone off for 10 minutes and was automatically turned off.
I thought it was weird so I did some digging and it turned out that NONE of my sounds were working. The volume was up, silent mode was off, but I was getting nothing whatsoever from the phone speaker. Even speaker phone wasn't working. Headphones worked fine. It seemed my speaker had blown.
Well, later in the day (as I was preparing to take it back to Verizon) it just randomly starts working again. All sounds now seem fine.
So I set my alarm this morning. And this time, it didn't even go off, at all! I woke up 5 minutes after it was supposed to go off, and when I unlocked my phone, THEN the alarm started going off. It's almost like it isn't coming our of deep sleep to sound the alarm.
Are these two issues related; the sound issue yesterday and the alarm issues both days? Has anyone else experienced this? It seems to be random...sometimes I can replicate it, other times I cannot.
There's another thread about this somewhere...try a search for "alarm". It's happened to me often enough that I can't rely on my Gnex as an alarm clock...I have to use my old SGS instead. I've also had loss of sound occasionally, but a reboot always fixes it.
Wish someone would figure out a solution, it's pretty annoying to have a bug like this in the alarm. Even the cheapest, crappiest dumbphone you can buy comes with a reliable alarm app, but my expensive smartphone does not? (and yes, I've tried other alarm apps besides the stock one...they all fail to go off intermittently.)

Thanks for the input. I use my alarm daily and this is the first time I've had this issue.
As an aside (but perhaps related issue?), my gmail app has uninstalled itself and I can't get it reinstalled. Looks like it's time for a reflash.

Yes I would reflash before you miss a flight or the interview to your dream job!
One thing I miss about my old blackberry is the alarm. Put it in the cradle and the time would dim, all notifications would turn off and the alarm would fire every time, every when the battery had been drained and switched off. Pity everything else sucked...
I've yet to have a problem.
Maybe you're getting SOD's (or close-to) in the middle of the night and the phone is having trouble waking itself up?
Try adjusting your governor and turn your undervolts up if they're enabled.
I am, however, fairly OCD about my alarms...
I reboot my phone before opening the alarm app and ONLY the alarm app...
Make sure the alarm is enabled...
And turn the screen off.
I've done this since my OGDroid days.
I also have the trusty DX as a backup...set 10 minutes later; just in case.

[Q] Alarms not going off

I'm on Chuppa Rom (latest build) and I seem to be having an issue with my notifications and my alarm.
My alarms: I have timely and Alarm Clock Xtreme on because I've had bad experiences with the stock alarm app in the past. Timely still rings the alarm but not at the time I set. Maybe a few minutes later after the time I've set it to. My Alarm Clock Xtreme doesn't even ring. I have the notification of the next alarm on my notification tray as do I have the widget on the home screen. Also, my WhatsApp notifications too come in late (sometimes by half an hour!!). My sync is turned on so I don't know what else I can do.
Please advise,

Did your greenify those apps?
Also, the new "Quiet mode" seems to silence alarms as well so make sure it isn't turned on during your alarms or give them priority.

Greenify is amazing, just don't use it on alarms app as they might not 'wake' to wake you up
There's also a notification setting (for wakelocks) which you should go over, make sure those apps aren't turned off or limited.

I just realised that Greenify hibernates app and not keeps them 'awake, lol.
That won't fix the issue of it always forgetting to wake me up.
Any idea how to proceed?

Greenify was more of a side note. I only mentioned it cause I did greenify my alarms before without thinking that it wouldn't go off.
But you should check your app notification settings (in your phone settings). It's a wakelock control that was added with Lollipop.

I'm sorry, I seem to be a little lost. I tried looking for the wakelock control but to no avail :\
What does the wakelock control do? Does it keep apps awake (that I need to apply it to my alarm app)?

If you don't know what/were it is, chances are the it's not the issue. It is used to turn off wakelock notifications but by default, they should be activated. More details here
Do you have any app that help you phone's battery or 'speed boosters'?
Here, try this:
Settings, sound then notifications and clock, checked the priority option, then selected turned on priority sound profile.

Sorry for the late reply. I just noticed my notifications now. I don't tend to login too often.
My UI seems to be on sleep mode for some reason. As in, I'll unlock the phone wondering why no alarm went off and notice that the 3 different clocks I have on my homescreen as widgets all show the time from a few hours back and then after a couple of seconds refresh and show the correct time at which the alarm from 10 minutes ago now begins to ring. I still don't know what's causing this. All this time I've been using my old phone as my alarm. I'm thinking of moving onto another ROM. Maybe an AOSP one despite the bugs just because of this bug. If anyone has any ideas on how to fix this problem it would be much appreciated.

No, and no. Sometimes it'll ring like usual. Other times it won't even ring. I suspect it's because the clock function sometimes tends to lag out and go unresponsive. You know how sometimes if you've got multiple windows open then later on you go back to one of them and everything has to be drawn up again as though it wasn't running at all in the background and that it was turned off for the time being? That's how my clock seems to operate. I can see that when I unlock my phone for a short moment the time is the time a few hours ago and it needs to resync for a second before it displays the correct time. Other times it's responsive and it tells the correct time and in those instances the alarm rings without issue. But every 3 or 4 times, it turns unresponsive on me and my alarm doesn't kick in.

Do you have a App ops in your settings? Where you could give the clock app priority or whitelist it.
Otherwise, I remember reading about someone fixing that issue setting his alarms with the calendar app, not ideal but it's a workaround.

App that keeps ambient mode always on?

So I found this one app " Swipify" that lets me keep the watch face on full time. I like it but it drains the battery a bit faster then I would like. Also when charging the watch the round charge progress bar does not advance so I have no idea how charged it is until I take it off the dock. So I un-installed it. I am looking for an app that will let me keep the watch in the dimmed "Ambient mode" full time and then when I lift the watch to look at it, have it to the full watch face mode until I set my arm back down.
Anyone make such a add-on app by chance? :fingers-crossed:
Or should I start learning how to code apps?
Any chance they (moto) will update with such features?
Thanks,
-DK
I'm not sure if such an app exists, but I'm just about 100% sure that Motorola will never add this feature. The current 5.1.1 software version was significantly delayed because they were trying to optimize battery life. I think it's a combination of a small battery and an old, power hungry processor that is the main problem.
I find that since upgrading to 5.1.1 I can go the entire day on one charge in ambient mode but I have to leave the watch sitting flat in order to test it. But by the end of the day I still have 25-25% charge left with it running the entire day in Ambient mode as long as I do not get to many notifications during the day which of course I can control those with no problem.

Huh? What's the point of having a watch if the only way you can get it to work is to lie it on the desk and not touch it, oh and to disable notifications, aka the only thing that makes the "watch" something more than juts a watch?

That is why I am looking for an App similar to Swipify to keep the ambient mode on full time. And I only let it lie flat for a day to test the battery life and it makes it through the day with the screen on full time in ambient mode. So I know the watch is capable of doing what I would want it to use it for.
And I said "as long as I don't get too many notifications", I never said I disabled notifications. I still have those on.

Gocha. No need to be defensive, sorry for the misunderstanding.
Still seems like you'd always be on the hairy edge of running out of battery in a real-world scenario. Hell, I'm ambient mode off but tilt-to-wake on, and some long days I barely make it to the end of the day. Never had luck with even the fake ambient mode the Moto provides.

All good, sorry to come off as defensive. :good::highfive:
Been using it with tilt-to-wake turned off and I am finding that by the end of the day I still have plenty of juice left.
With Ambient on and tilt-to wake off I find I have about 35-40% left at the end of a 7am - 11pm day. That is with receiving some email and text notifications (maybe 15-20) during the day.
I know everyone has different uses and ideas of how to use their Moto 360 so everyone's setting are going to be different, but what I am after is a always on "dimmed" or "ambient" mode with the option to turn on tilt to wake so I could test the battery life both ways. I would also like to use my 360 for home automation control and I I know with "Autowear" it is possible but from the little testing I have done so far it would kill my battery way to fast so perhaps on a future SW that will be something I will be doing.
Pausing and starting Netflix or HBOgo or Plex from my 360 is working pretty good for me as a start.
Think I will try and contact the owner of the Swipify app and see what he can do for me......
With the latest update LCA44B, when ambient is on and tilt is off, the screen will stay on all the time. However with ambient on and tilt on, it is same as previous behavior, screen will turn off when you put your arm by your side.
