Here is my painted plate. I still need to wet sand, buff, and shoot a layer of clear coat over it but you get the idea.

Doing a little bit of reading goes a long way.
Looks good, want to see the final results though.
Wish there were custom lids for these that were painted and sold as accessories, but the shield is just not popular enough I guess.

Thank you very much. The black is krylon fusion which is supposed to bond to just about anything. The green is also krylon but its flourescent instead of the fusion. Heres a pic of it after i finished wetsanding it today. Its as smooth as glass to the touch but once i shoot a layer of clear coat itll really shine then. In one spot i sanded a bit to much and the metal came through and then a lightbulb went off. I decided to give it a worn look with bits of black and metal showing through. I might leave it as is tho i kind of like the dullness.

I got bored on Friday and decided to finish it up I wet sanded it shot a layer of clear coat wet sanded it again and then shot a final coat of clear. I do think i like the glossy look better. Plus i baked the clear coat which makes it a bit tougher.

I have seem some Carbon Fiber "look" done with 3M Di-Noc film, but I think it look very poor and, honestly do not look anything like real Carbon Fiber. So I pulled out my Epoxy and my Carbon Fiber fabric and wrapped a stock back cover.
The result is far from perfect but it is quite nice, as an added bonus I was able to grind the inside to be able to accommodate the extended battery (I think my modified cover fits better than the Stock Extended Battery Cover...)

I will not be building some for other members as the amount of work needed to get it done will make it ridiculously expensive...
This may also be an excellent time to remind anyone else who's gonna try this to take appropriate precautions.
Carbon fiber dust is not good for you. At all.
Looks good! I don't think too many people would attempt this. First, you need the CF material. Maybe you should post this in the Accessories section?
looks awesome man! well done! wish i was good with CF
I would love something like that! Maybe I'll try 3M Di-Noc since I can get it for free.....
WOW! Nicely done!!
How long did it take you to make that?
Nice job. Personally, i would have went with 1x1 plain weave. 2x2 twill weaves are way to big for such a small application. Also would have either used a matte clear or sand the clear you have with 600 / 800 / 1000 grid paper to get a matte finish effect. If you want more info PM me and i'd be glad to help. if you start sanding, keep in mind how much clear you used. IF YOU SAND TOO MUCH AND HIT THE FABRIC YOUR SCREWED!!!
awesome! all you gotta do now, is make one with a hole cut in the original cover, so you can double stack two batteries, then just form your new carbon case to fit!
hmmm...you make covers ill solder batteries together : )
Awesome
Seeing there are several threads about people laying down black carbon fiber look vinyl on their phones, here's one done in silver. I got ripped off on eBay when I thought the listing was for genuine 3M Di-Noc, but the results turned out decent enough to share. Major problem with the cheap vinyl is that it stretches out way too easily and it melts at a lower temperature than the quality film.

Looks pretty sweet! Is that stuff adhesive, or do you have to use some sort of glue?
Yes, it is adhesive backed. Like I said I got the off brand stuff, the 3M branded Di-Noc works much better. There are numerous clips on youtube about the stuff and how to use it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mL0nOpvkTb4 <=== link to video showing install on a BMW steering wheel.
Does it come in black? White is too girly for me.

I've got black 3M textured Carbon, but I think the stuff would be way too thick to work on the backing. I'll try it though, have a ton left from my computer.
The 3M branded film works great on the back. You just have to trim it right at the edges of the cover instead of folding over the underside a bit. That pic turned out looking white? It is silver. They have 500! other colors. I dont know about the other 500 varieties but the carbon fiber look films are actually textured and have a good grip to them.
I went ahead and put the fiber on my backplate.... It looks awesome, but the lip is killing me....
Edit: The fiber was pretty thick, so an idea struck me. I stuck it on the back directly, instead of on the cover. Fits great, feels great. Might add another layer to get rid of some of the 'give' between components.
Ridges are a whole heck of a lot more visible in photos, but aren't they always?
Phone is an extra mm thinner, and a bit lighter too. In addition, the battery no longer falls out in those big drops

Just thought I'd post my opinion on my latest case and throw up a few pictures for you guys to have a look at..
This is my second case for my S3, the first one being a FONEM8 Hard Slim Shell off eBay (www.ebay.co.uk/itm/140764120157) and while I was happy with the fit and style the rubberised texture attracted dirt like you wouldn't believe. In the end I had a grotty off white case that wouldn't even wash clean You can see what I mean in the 3rd picture.
Off I went looking for something similar in fit but with a gloss/shiny finish so it didn't end up all mucky and found the Nillkin Dynamic Fashion Hard Case (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/230807084265) paid my £10 and waited for the postman. It arrived fairly quickly from China and I'm pretty happy with it. The rainbow effect that can be seen in the pictures is fairly subtle and can't really be seen in the pictures, its most noticeable in natural light.
Here's the pictures anyway (http://imgur.com/a/Hy2gp)

Those are really nice, I have the black textured one and it feels like it will protect your phone. Also goes over the bezel of the phone enough that you can leave it face down.
I bought one but didnt like it, i didnt like that theres little to no protection on the corners of the phone ,i bought a samsung vented case instead and like that better

The corners and top/bottom are a tad exposed, for me its trying to find happy medium between protection and keeping the device feeling slick and lightweight, can be tricky
I tend to go through cases quite alot (finished with about 8/9 for my iPhone) so I'll do a thread like this for each one I buy so others have a decent(ish) reference :good:
Here is mine...
Good.
So i decided to plastidip my phone since i wanted a bit more grip from it, and let me tell you right now you can hold it vertically in your hand and it'll barely slide down, no need for grippy cases that add bulk. Best part is if you don't like it you can simply peel off the coating, here are some before and after pics of how i prepared it for the coating, i did 5 thin coats every 20 minutes and let it dry overnight.

I plastidip alot of stuff (car parts, mostly) so this is awesome!
How does it hold up over daily use...any flaking or chipping?

Ok this idea was only half perfect, i used it for the day and while the grip was awesome the ability to put it in and out of your pocket was disastrous, it just doesn't want to go in or out. Plus it picks up all the lint in the pocket, olh well at least it'll be easy to remove now :silly:

This is a sweet idea, but is there something like plastidip that will not pick up lint/flake? I'm thinking of the rubberized surfaces on some cases etc. That would also be kind of cool

I purchased this skin directly from Cruzerlite and it came with in a few days time. I have had a few skins for my Nexus 5 and this one fits and feels really well. The cut outs are spot on and each side piece fits perfectly around the edges. I did have to use a hair dryer to smooth out the corners a bit but that is to be expected.
I like the texture of the skin; kind of like a lizard skin if you will. The color however isn't close to the render that we is on Amazon or Cruzerlite.com. It is more of a light green or if you want to compare the color to a fruit - Avocado, and not lime green. Yes monitors can differ from one another and can cause it to look different, however, my monitors are calibrated.
The skin will protect the phone from scratches and scrapes and it makes the phone more to your style. It is made with 3M vinyl and it is fairly thick which helped with the instillation. I tried a Florescent Red from Cruzerlite and that skin was very thin and was hard to get on correctly. Not sure if all of the Florescent skins are thin like the one I had.
Pros-
Easy Instillation
Great Fit
Protects from Scratches
Price
Look and Feel
Extra Fronts and Sides just in case you mess up some how.
Cons-
Color is a bit off from the render.
On to the florescent red skin.
This one is a bit of a different story.
The skin was very thin and hard to align and Could not for the life of me get the bubbles out of it. I did like the color of it though. Very bright!
I would for the time being stay away from those skins. Too difficult and too bubbly.
Did you use a hair dryer when installing the green one? If that’s the result I would definitely stay away from it – I couldn’t use a phone skin with back corners lifted/creased up like that, it will get dust/lint in no time and will eventually peeled off
As I mentioned in the Cruzerlite thread earlier that they should provide “real” images of the skins so the customer know what color/look they’ll really get.
I did after I took the pictures. Much better now.

Is it just me or do these skins look super tacky and cheapens the phone. It's like wrapping your sofa up in plastic.
