Wiping data will delete all ROM data, which includes contacts. Anything stored on the internal SD will not be wiped unless you select it under Advanced Wipe. Assuming your contacts are synced to Google, they will restore automatically after you add your Google account back.

Yes wiping data and flashing a new rom will physicaly wipe out your contacts from the phone. However they should be synced with google and reloaded after you sign in on the new rom. That is if you have contact sync enabled, which i believe it is by default. Verizion backups up your contacts too if you allowed them to with the vzw backup app. There are also apps like Titanium Backup which can backup and restore your contacts. I would just make sure google contacts sync is on and do a manual sync to make sure they are all backed up. Then flash away.

ok thanks to the both of you everything should be fine then when i can flash a new rom

Arrow [ROM][10/05][Sense2.1+Sense3.0 GB]InsertCoin CM7/STOCK v22 - apps are crashing

hi,
just installed the rom. but now i got problems with contacts. the contact app won't
load the contacts. and if i try another contact app it just crashes. any ideas why?
thx...
were you coming from a different ROM? did you do a full wipe?
I've got the same problem. I can see all the contacts from "call" menu, but when I want to enter details the app crashes. Whn I simply open contacts app, loading circle appears and nothing happens, sometimes also crashes after few mins of "loading".
Had the exact same problem weeks ago on InsertCoinHD 2.0.0, got used to it but it's kinda annoying. Both times I did full wipe of everything, however I restored contacts data using Titanium (from stock rom).
Tried to fix permissions too...
Used to get this too. Found out I hadn't done a proper full wipe. Now, after nandroid b/u, my procedure goes:
- Wipe data/factory reset
Then in mounts/storage
- format sys
- format data
- format cache
- format SD-Ext
Then advanced
- wipe Dalvic
Flash ROM.
I came from a LeeDroid ROM and until I tried this, I got the same problem with contacts every time. It drove me nuts! All good now!

came from original ruu (or how u call it )...before installing, i did a full wipe..but maybe i try the method of 777ace...
tell u guys later, if it works...
well, i did following things..
i did a fullwipe, then, wipe-dalvic and after it flash rom again..and now it works
perfect
btw: i'm using amon-ra for hboot..great piece of work..it also has a option to
format your sdcard with ext2,3,4 and so on..
Sorry to hijack this thread but I am using this rom and have a problem with text messages disappearing. When I receive a text, read it and then go back in to messages the inbox is empty. The option to delete old messages in settings is unchecked.
Any ideas?
Cheers

I normally wipe data, cache and dalvik, then install ROM and restore settings using Titaniuim - always the same problem. I'm starting to think that it might be related to my contacts data, did you have that problem even without restoring your contacts on a clear ROM install? Or, as you managed to fix it, can you restore your contacts without problems or you just sync them using Google account?

Try backing up your contacts/data with "mybackup root". Heard of a lot of problems with Titanium.
I have all my contacts saved on the google account (nothing on the phone itsels) and never had any issues like you're describing with viewing/editing contacts.
so the idea woud be... back-up -> wipe all + dalvik ->reflash ROM -> restore

Backup and flash questions

I rooted my Evo a while ago. Now I want to try a different rom and I am not clear about somethings. If the new rom requires a data wipe how can I migrate my data to the new rom?
I can use recovery to do a full backup then wipe and install the new rom. Can I then flash my old data back? Or would that not be considered a wipe? In other words does a wipe for a rom require all new data or is it OK that the data be "reinstalled"? Is the issue the actual contents of the data or the location in flash of the data partition?
If I can't use my existing data with a new rom is Titanium backup the only way to migrate existing data to a new rom?
Second, and related, is a basic question about partitions. If the size of a partition is fixed, at least at installation of a rom, then is there any benefit in deleting bloatware? If I install a rom that still has some sprint apps and then I delete one do I get that space back? Or is the size of that partition fixed so the deleted space is now empty but not available to my data partition?
Finally, if I install a rom that has new versions of an app is there an easy way to tell and to delete the version from data? For example if i have Google maps in data and then upgrade to a rom that has new maps how can I tell which is newer? Can I just uninstall the app in market, if the data version is older or the same as the rom?
Thanks for help with these basic questions.
I realize that I am missing a basic understanding of the "disk structure" of android. But I have not been able to figure out a good source to explain this.

Contacts and calendar should be backed up to google, as long as they are "google contacts" and not "phone contacts".
Texts can be backed up with SMS Backup and Restore.
Pics should obviously be on the sd card.
Apps and their settings can be backed up and restored with Titanium Backup.
Using the above things, the ONLY thing that you should have to setup when flashing a new rom is: first, your google account, and then your homescreen layout and system settings. Keep in mind, Titanium will back these up for you, but this is NOT to be used to restore between roms, it is only to be used within the same rom. If you try to restore system settings and home screen layouts between roms, it will mess up the rom.

No, as that would defeat the purpose of wiping data in the first place. I know it's a pain, but you NEED to wipe data when flashing roms, if you dont you WILL have many problems with the new rom. I've got it down to about 20 minutes from flashing a new rom to being fully set up again.

[Q] Backing up before flashing new rom help.

Hey
So I'm going to go right into my question..
I own a Verizon Galaxy Nexus which is working great so far (except for the horrible battery life) currently I'm running THIS rom on my device. I am rooted boot loader is unlocked and have clockwork mod installed etc
I want to flash BAMF Paradigm 1.2 rom but I have some concerns
If I do a nandroid back up will it backup my text messages, apps and photos on the the internal storage?
IF i do a factory reset/wipe data will I loose EVERYTHING?
I want to try out this new one or if you have a better rom you'd like to recommend . I just don't want to loose all my files and data or settings in the process.
Thanks in advance btw
The nandroid will back those things up, but after you've wiped data, etc... they won't be visible to you on your newly flashed ROM assuming you've done the right thing and wiped. Titanium backup can be used to bu and restore your apps/data, but it's not a good idea to restore system data, restore user apps (+ data that you can't live without) after you've installed your new ROM; back ups aren't affected by wipes, unless you format your entire SD card.
Separate apps are available that can back up SMS's, can't think of any names offhand.
A nandroid will backup everything up including texts, apps, photos etc. as the previous poster said. However, when you factory reset/wipe data, CWM will not touch your virtual SD card so things on it will remain on it e.g. nandroids, photos if that's where you save them etc. The only time your SD card will be wiped is if you do fastboot oem lock/unlock or if you flash the stock Google image. Everything on the phone will be wiped though e.g. contacts (unless they're synced to Google), app data etc.
Personally I'd recommend AOKP but I'm just biased because that's what I use (well a derivative of it that's themed).
Thanks!

Flashing without data loss

I have my concerns. I am trying to flash to the new Synergy ROM and when I was about to run it, it asked about wiping my data. I was never the type to install my apps to my SDcard because I wanted that open to my musical needs. Any recommendations how to keep all my apps alive? Thanks for you help guys.

there are several app backup options including Super Backup on the play store. it will allow you to backup apps, sms, contacts, call logs, etc. always do a full wipe before flashing a new rom. ask yourself how well you want your phone to perform on any particular firmware and then decide whether you want to wipe and flash or not. follow the developers instructions and wipe data.
i wouldn't suggest backing up any System related apps and restore on different rom though
if it is User Apps, you can do it

To clear this up: DO NOT RESTORE SYSTEM APPS
But like mentioned, Super Backup or Titanium Backup will let you backup your apps' data and restore after a factory reset.

[Q] stuck in Venom Viper One boot after installing RootCloak

Hello!
I have installed RootCloak and after the needed reboot of the phone, it is always stuck in Viper One logo boot screen.
When I wipe Dalvik, I get the actualization screen from Android and after checking the apps nothing else happens. Just "apps are getting started" and the spinning circle....
Any ideas how to recover my phone?
I can't perform a backup because CWM says it cannot mount the sd-card and there is not enough space on internal memory.....
Can you reflash the rom?
And why are you wanting to do a backup of a corrupt system?

I have already reflashed the ROM, but no effort.
All I want to save are SMS and photos. Can I secure them on any way?
Do you have a nandroid backup from your recovery that you can restore? And if not... Why? ? Everyone should do a backup before flashing anything.... Then you always can restore to your previous state.
That will not wipe your pics. But sms yes. Just about anything you do will wipe your sms's .
There may be a way to adb pull your texts and even pics... If you can get into adb mode in your recovery. But you'd have search on that, I've never done it.
Anyway, Another option is from recovery, wiping system, data, cache and dalvik and clean installing your rom. Whatever that app did will be wiped. Pics will be fine. But again, sms gone.
That's all the ideas I have. Aside from returning to stock.

I have a nandroid backup when I installed the ROM, sure...
But I did not make a new one while installing RootCloaker, because it is "just an app". so the backup is too old any many SMS will be gone.
Can I access the device via ADB when it is in recovery?

If it has the option. In twrp it's in advanced menu I believe. Not sure about others.
Restoring your nandroid will likely get you running. In the future, backup texts with sms backup and restore or a similar app. Then you'll be good.
Or let go of the past like I do.... I start fresh with texts after every flash. But that's me. To each their own. ?
But at this point, you're missing out on your phones functionality over them. And whether you can pull the with adb , I'm not even sure.
Good luck though!
