M's screen vs. razr hd - Droid RAZR M General

I would just like to know how the m's screen compares to the razr hd?
I mean does the razr hd's screen make a lot of difference? for general use..
And what about playing 720p/bluray quality content?
Also I'm just curious about battery life.. as in.. they've been shipping/selling these since September 2012 so how often do the batteries go out?
I mean is there a idea of a expected point of failure of all the batteries in the m's/hd.. maybe September 2014?

I don't play games on my M or HD, so I can't comment on that. However, the battery on the HD Maxx is significantly better than my M. I mean, I get almost twice what I do on my M. Also, the screen is much more crisp and the touch response is much more sensitive on the HD.

thanks
I've ordered a m.. but picking up a hd maxx with a used battery seems like a bad idea..
It's why I'm curious about their "battery life".. I saw 2 razr m's at my local flea market.. (and 1 had just come in that day) made me wonder too if people are dump e'm cause the internal battery is going?

I purchased my HD used and it doesn't appear to be having any battery issues. I think you would be safe also buying one that is used.

When you look at the M's screen, you can easily identify pixels.
You won't be able to identify pixels on the HD, without pressing your face against the screen or using a magnifying glass.
As far as quality beyond that, they are about the same.
The HD does feel more sensitive than the M (ex, using gloves and styluses).

^^^Yeah, that is biggest thing I noticed when going to the HD.

[Q] Anyone hoping there's an Incredible 2?

I think the thunderbolt is pretty bad ass... but i came from a Droid X back to the Incredible just because the 3.7 screen size, thinness, and trackball just makes for a better device for me at least.
Anyone hoping HTC and Verizon release an Incredible2 with the same or slightly thinner size and upgraded specs (LTE, dual core, higher screen res.. etc) to go along side the bigger Thunderbolt?
I would love something like that. An even more refined version of this phone. It's sleek already, but as with all tech devices, will age rather quickly. Sometimes I think these 4+ inch screens are too big, the Inc is a great size. Inc2 should also have a front facing camera in addition to what you said (LTE, dual core, higher res screen). It would be my next phone without a doubt

Yeah I had an X for a while and finally went back to the incredible for just that reason. the added bulk outweighs the benefits of the bigger screen. The incredible is just such a sweet feeling phone in the hand it just feels like a super modern device.. not a mini tablet.
I have a fascinate i'm playing with now and it is definitely more sleek than the X but i havent activated it for a few reason. its still fatter and taller than the incredible, although thinner. and samsung hasnt released froyo for it.
the build quality on the incredible is also on par with the best smartphones. the buttons click firmly, soft touch back. nice red accents and the battery cover doesnt slide of so easily like moto devices.
I'll probably stick with the incredible line for a while if they keep it alive.
See, the beauty of the larger phones is that they have LCD screen types... which not only makes daytime sight easier, but you can use an app to change the LCD density, thus increasing your resolution. It's not a massive view change, but it certainly does make a difference when you think about how big that screen will be. Every little bit counts.

i'm pretty sure the Thunderbolt has the same SLCD technology that my Incredible has other than size obviously. and while you can change the LCD density with an app... it makes some apps not render correctly.
thunderbolt= undervolt
I say undervolt because i cant beleive we will not get our dinc 2 the way it should have been. hdmi out is fairly standard on top end devices.. not undervolt.. we all like our smaller dincs or we would get evo's or motorola devices... again not undervolt..big and ugly. Even when the dinc first came out with verizon it was the featured phone for only 30 - 60 days. then not even on display. and how much fun was getting the tv out cable( wich many verizon emplees told me does not exist) only to find out it does not work very well..Htc makes some of the best phones! Add verizon...Htc + big red= undervolt... too bad .

[Q] IPS display on Nitro vs iPhone4/4S

Hi guys,
I would just like to get some feedback regarding the IPS screen on the Nitro. I have been using iPhone 4 for around 2 years and would like to switch to an HD android phone. However I think I am kind of spoiled by the IPS display on the iPhone as it is simply the best I have seen so far. I have compared it with others like SAMOLED+, HD SAMOLED(Pentile) or the SLCD2 and I still find it to be the most comfortable to look at. I dont have a chance to look at the Nitro screen in person as it is not available in Australia so I was thinking I can use some feedback from actual users.
Personally I think the SAMOLEDs are a bit too colorful and the SLCD2 is still a little bit washed-out. I have read some reviews on the internet and it seems like the IPS on the Nitro is not as bright as the one on iPhone but I am not too sure if it is true. So what do you guys think of the screen comparing to the ones on iPhone 4/4s in terms of contrast, brightness and color accuracy?
Thanks heaps!
Max
LG makes the retina display for the iPhone 4/4s. It's the exact same technology in both displays, with the same ppi, but the Nitro has a higher resolution.

Actually the Nitro has a slightly higher ppi than the iPhone 4/s.

iPhone 4/4S is 330ppi and Nitro HD is 326ppi (based on GSMarena.com's calculations anyway). Although small rounding errors would give different results. It's negligible in any case.
The display is phenomenal, but it's the software running the display that will make you scratch your head. Gingerbread isn't optimized to run a display of this resolution. There is banding on gradients and certain times you will look at the screen and make you doubt it.
However, when ICS hits, it'll all be cleared up. It's still the best display that I've sen on an Android phone yet. I returned my Galaxy Nexus for this phone. There is no replacement for sharpness and color accuracy, both of which this phone has.
If coming from an iPhone, you won't be disappointed.
The ppi is definitely negligible, but as a former iPhone 4 user myself, I can assure you the Nitro HD's screen is just as great with the added benefit of being large enough for true HD. I wouldn't ever take an iPhone again. Way too small.

Yea that's exactly the same reason I am switching to android. If the screen is indeed the same quality then I will be very happy to get a Nitro or maybe wait for the Optimus LTE2 as I dont like the Tegra 3 on the 4X.
The coming iPhone 5 is better. If you want to taste ICS android, LTE2 is perfect, for its longer battery life.
I'm getting out of patience with charging the batterys.

I`ve read once that ah-ips is in fact a AFFS matrix. Can anyone proove that or is it wrong?
One interesting variation of IPS is the AH-IPS architecture developed by LG Display. This type of IPS panel uses the AFFS (advanced fringe field switching).

I found AFFS type matrix in only 1 phone in whole world and it is Nokia 5530 2.9"
AFFS panels are mostly utilized in the cockpits of latest commercial aircraft displays. Seems like ours display is only on par to expensive commercial aircraft ones and not to some cheap $h1t pentile amoleds

eh?
what does the "coming iphone 5 is better." mean? of course it will be better, that's the point. why would it be worse? worse than what? the 4? a blackberry? smoke signals?
BUT- it's all rumor and speculation at this point and the screen size is a guess too.
not to mention, it's a year away and no one has even guessed how it will address lte and batt issues with that.
bottomline: certainly a smart phone released a year from now should be better than any phone on the market today.
next, the lte2 is perfect for what? op isn't in korea. and its longer batt life is based primarily on the larger batt, and from what Ive gathered, not on any real sw tweaks.

longer batt life due to S4 Krait based on 28nm, and therefor way too cooler than ours Scorpion, and secondly radio chip is inside of S4 so helps reduce power. Seems like I've get lte2 in my hands sooner than at&t will bring official ICS to light
for LTE2 there's own tread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1635089

i've read the thread, hell i commented in it weeks ago.
but I tend not to buy into the marketing that the lte2 is automatically better at handling the battery, i'll wait for some testing.
on the other hand, a batt ~350mAh bigger is an obvious difference.
not saying the phone won't include some break-through batt tech that solves the problem of battery power, but i've yet to see any proof and i tend to distance myself from the pre-release marketing.
The screen on my LG Spectrum is phenomenal when compared to my old AMOLED DROID Incredible. I've also compared my screen to the screen of friends' iPhone 4s and 4Ss. So long as the brightness is roughly equivalent, the LG Spectrum comes out ahead because it is true HD.
Watching Netflix on my phone in HD is awesome and everyone I've shown it to is exceedingly impressed. Even iPhone owners.

This is exactly why I chose lg nitro for my upgrade. I compared displays of samsung, htc, moto razr and iphone. Samsung colors looked non-uniform on the blue side. Moto razr is, well, not much to write home about. Htc, not good either. Iphone's display is very good and normalised and it looks more effective with appke's aesthetic design wrapped around it. But I am an iphone hater (like mac though).
First thing that stands out with Nitro is it's display. Very clear and even. But it's design is same old plastic and mmmehhh..still chose the phone because the display is the best in the current android crop and too good to pass. Put the leaked ics, not the cm9, and you have a neat package. Also, as previous user of cm9, a big shout out to them, they gave the nitro community the first taste of ics which is greatly appreciated.

Is there actually a noticeable difference between CM9 and the leak in terms of display?
Aside from the random blue flash on CM9 and considering my limited time on the leak (~an hour), I'd say no.
The leak is more fluid and customised. But the major positive is the battery life. I had to recharge twice a day using cm9. Now with the leaked version the phone still has some juice left end of the day.

I agree... in order to get decent battery life out of CM9 I've had to switch over to hspa+ and use SetCPU to reduce my CPU speed while the screen is off, as well as manage my wifi well.

(Q) Is display really as bad as people make it out to be?

Hello,
I'm very interested in buying an unlocked ZL, but the only thing that has me thinking twice is the display. Almost every review I've read mentions that the ZL has terrible viewing angles, and the contrast isn't very good.
I'm coming from a Nexus 4, and the viewing angles on it are great. The contrast isn't the best, but I'm not expecting AMOLED black levels here.
So, I just thought I'd check in here and hopefully get a response or two from people who actually own the phone. It's either this or Oppo Find 5, but this one will have tons more support. Thanks in advance!

Why dont you try going through a few threads here? You'll have your answer.
Short answer: Viewing angles worse than N4 even though overall screen quality is much better. If you have a habit of looking at your phones obliquely, dont buy the ZL.
I just went to a Sony store to check it out in person, I really think the display is not bad at all. you should definitely go to the store to see it on person, I am planning to get it once it will be on sale this coming week.

I have had mine for 3 weeks and I think the screen is great. Viewing angles are not great, but in my daily use and in my personal opinion the screen looks great. I don't look at my screen from odd angles so it is never an issue for me. Webpages and YouTube videos look fantastic

I personally look the device at local Market, some of Bad issue with the screen is or May be we can say Bad-luck of Sony is that the Software UI Background Color is Grey & its not in Black color, it's the main reason the screen is not looking good & everyone judge it as a washout screen,If we change the theme of Xperia Z the Screen looking Good at All.so I think its same for ZL too.
So viewing Angle are still not good as in IPS panel are, but remember the viewing angle issue is raised in just the Case of Xperia Z/ZL Cause Sony using the same TFT panel in all of their Smartphones & since than No one Complain or Raise even about A bit for the viewing angles,
Xperia T/TX are using same TFT screen Panel but no one said in their reviews that the Viewing angles are Bad & are Washout. But there is actually need to Point out the issue because poeple Spend A lot of their Hard erning Money & in result they don't Get the good thing.
In the Same sense with our TVs Picture Settings in Our Family member Set it to Vivid, some one came(suppose Papa) and set it too Standard & you like Soft or any of Factory settings given in Picture Mode of your TV.
so the point is that the Everyone have their own Preference for the Colors & look on something.
Although we all Admit that Sony should Put the IPS Panel screen in their High End Smartphone, there is no Lag or Cons in Xperia ZL either than of slightly viewing angle, Because in Some situations we must have need for Viewing Angles(not all the time), In that condition the screen Fade out is really a shame for the owner of device as well Sony too because we having a High end smartphone and the screen is Fading in some conditional bloody angles.
I'm saying again there is no any Smartphone which is Perfect in All of their Aspects.
Htc having Heavy software,as well the Htc oneX+ is A issue with its wifi by manufacture, Some People Blaming Sony for their Late Updated Schdule for Software, But remember & check the Htc is having same thing with Software updating schedule, and Samsung having their own bloatwares type software in their mobiles. The Clean and Best nearly Stock Android you Can found in Xperia Z/ZL Smartphone in Form of Jelly Bean (4.1.2).
Also the App "screen Calibration" is putted in Xperia ZL for screen Adjustment by user Preference.
Mostly the chance is that the Latest Software May set all of the issue Regarding our Concerns.
Go in your Nearly Store & check for yourself the screen how its looking to you, leave that how its looking to another person.
God Bless you
I've been using the C6506 since April 3rd and I can honestly say that I *really* love the display. Calibrating with the WB app really helped and everything looks really sharp. I couldn't care less about the viewing angles, because honestly, how many times do I really need to look at the phone off-angle? I moved from an iPhone 5 for this phone and it's far, far better.

Is it just me?

When I use my friends iPhones or any 720p phones they look very grainy to me. Is it just me or is it because I have gotten used to the QHD display on my G3? I used to think the iPhone screen size was ok...now when I use it it's like a toy, and I have a hard time navigating the screen ?
Also whenever I use the S4 it definitely feels a little more grainy after you get used to the QHD panel. Is anyone else seeing those sideffects. I think my perception quality expectations is out of the roof now...makes me wonder how people claim that a iPhone PPI is more than enough ?
Same here, every smartphone I am looking at looks kinda grainy, it's hard to describe...
The display of my mother in laws Galaxy core something with it's 800x480 4,3" display looks like a crossword puzzle ☺
Frankly even some 720P phones make the iPhone look grainy, the iPhone is one of the lowest DPI phones you can still buy, it doesn't qualify as HD by any definition.
Yup my other phone is iphone 5 and its sh*t compered to g3 my mother huawei g300 that is just ridiculous
Agreed, even the 1080 phones look quite quite grainy. The sharpening and variable quality screens ruin the G3 display though.

I know it makes me think what the hell are the iPhone fans thinking when they say that 300 PPI is more than enough or 1080p is unnecessary. Even the New iPhone 6 4.7 and 5.5 inch models won't have FHD. Totally will look grainy for sure.

Not just you, I also have a Moto X and that screen just screams of pixelation.
I'm starting to see old image assets showing their true low definition in apps, live wallpapers, games ect. Luckyily this isnt a 4k phone or it might be more noticable, as is things will only improve for 2k and 4k as time progresses. I can really tell text has lost the jagged edges it had with my old 720p phone which is nice.

When I say they look okay, I mean they look okay... Not fantastic or anything. I personally like the lg g3 display. It doesn't have that saturated look that Apple pushes with almost all of their displays.
It's more like a Eizo or Ben-q monitor. I guess you just have to work on them for period of time to appreciate it..
Some folks will dislike the output and some will make the necessary color adjustments to the device. I have colleagues who have looked at footage or hi res pictures on my device and they like the output..

The S4 and G2 displays are sti some very nice displays buddy. R2member they are still 1080p display.
With the galaxy s series phones you can calibrate the screen really good. On my issue is screen burn in.
The g2 to me is an okay display. The s4,wasn't something I cared for display wise. I still have my G2. I never noticed screen burn in with my g2
I tried using my calibrator on my g2 and I failed!!
When the new devices drop, it will be the same issues. The iPhone will have glue issues like they always. People will complain about the note 4 display until a few updates come out, and people will talk about the moto's radio more than anything else. The N6 will be buttery smooth , and that will be the sticking point for most with each particular device..
Power consumption concerning the higher end displays will be interesting with these devices..

What's also interesting will be if these displays actually change after being used for a while. My tv needed X amount of burn in time before the calibrator came out and to my place and did some adjustments to the tv.
If anyone can expound on if that is the case with these displays that would be interesting to get some source material on and read up on the subject.

Reasons to buy this phone over the X Performance?

I really like the XA1 look, but is there a reason I should buy this phone over the X Performance? The XP is older, but has better specs and is about the same price. Add the XZ to the list too. It's $449. XA1 Ultra is $399 usd.
The gorgeous big screen?
And it's the best looking phone i have ever seen, and build quality is high. The shape makes it like your holding a piece of solit brick/plank, love this.
I mean if you want your phone to look good this is it.
I am getting a case for it. Thw material they used to make this is very good. I have the white one.
Also be aware that the sound is gonna be low from the headphones you might get upset if you like your music loud. As i said the screen is very beautiful. It rekinded me og Galaxy s8 screen. The blacks are superb. I work in a electronics shop and pretty much used every phone in existance. Camera is good but i dont know much about that other phone.
Software wise it holds up pretty well, its snappy considering it doesnt have stock android. Heck my previous phone that has stock android, i bought for $35, and is snapier/faster, that tells you something. Its not horrible like Samsung's touchwiz.
Yeap all about the screen. Just picked up a ultra in white today and I am glad to have a 6inch screen again. Will have to wait and see if I continue to like it though. My p10 plus battery is horrible, u11 is damn nice but sometimes I want a headphone jack. G6 is great but wish the camera was faster

I really like the XA1 look, but is there a reason I should buy this phone over the X Performance? The XP is older, but has better specs and is about the same price. Add the XZ to the list too. It's $449. XA1 Ultra is $399 usd.

Spec isn't everything, especially when constrained by battery life. For someone who plays like only 2d game, or Asphalt/Riptide game, the XA1 Ultra will play fine for most.
The XA1 ultra battery even tho small, it can do better than expected. I'm not sure how Sony can pull this (as i can imagine screen will eat the battery more than a CPU fabrication factor), but that's the fact.

Battery life depends on how much you use the GPS, data etc. I've noticed that while I have unnecessary pre-installed apps disabled, and active WiFi scan off the battery seems to do well. But, if I use any social media apps (which I never do) the battery life goes pretty quick. Google now is also a battery killer ( nothing new) I'm debating rooting this device as I've yet to see what the custom ROMs have in the way of privacy guard and app control
I use social media pretty heavily, plus streaming the news almost all day long + Spotify... still get killer batt time. Also I charge it whenever I get into the car. Managed to get close to 100% after using the phone since 4AM till 3:30PM even throwing a 25-min Facebook Live, being in the car maybe for an hour all in all.

I think my biggest mistake was going for the Xperia X as at the time didn't know there was an X Performance ? lol but I've just upgraded from the X to the XA1 Ultra purely for the big screen and borderless display, putting it next to the X belittles it a lot but the colours on the X's display are much much more vibrant and colourful. The colours on the XA1 Ultra look a lot more dull but overall performance for me is great, the selfie camera can be rather laggy at times but it's a bonus having front flash (that also interested me) in my opinion.
Also, my other downpoint with the X was tempered glass screen protectors not having full coverage and leaving a thick bubble around the edge, I've just got some full coverage protectors for the XA1 Ultra and they're absolutely awesome.

Very strange, I've seen and used around three different XA1 Ultra's and the screen is fantastic, being even better and more colourful than my own 50'' 4K screen!
All reviews even say the screen on the XA1 is far better than other Sony flagships including the XZ Premium. I strongly agree.
Issue is the white balance may need calibrating as mine did. After calibration, WOW.
Try these settings and let me know if you see any improvement.
Red - 179
Green - 0
Blue - 58

White balance isn't the issue for me, I've fiddled around with it and it doesn't make a dramatic difference.
What I'm trying to get across is that when I have the devices side by side (both of them un-edited white balance, and super vivid mode on) you can really see more colour within the Xperia X screen and quite a few friends/family have also agreed with me. I thought it was just my screen so went to a local shop and put my X & XA1 U next to their XA1 U and it looked exactly the same.
I'm not trying to slate the device, I'm just simply stating that the colours on my X are MUCH more vibrant but I still love the XA1 U. Maybe it's just change getting at me lol.
Also, Xperia X has 441ppi (1920x1080) whereas the XA1 Ultra has 367 ppi (1920x1080).
This is one of my favorite phones of all time, and I'm. The type that has a new phone every year. Great display and an amazing battery for a 6 inch screen. I'm also a flashaholic and even though we don't have a custom ROM yet I am seriously loving even the stock experience. Sony did it right with this phone, get it you won't regret it. Heck I'm turning my gaming computer and turning it into a development system just because I love this phone so much... Give it two weeks and I'll be making my first rom(in the middle of moving or it would be sooner)
lovely thread. Very informative. Keep it up. Just one question: Are we getting Android O(reo)?
