[GUIDE] Improve captured image & video quality - Galaxy Y GT-S5360 General

Hi,
Here is a guide on how to improve image & video quality that captured with your phone and tablet.
Notice:
- This guide will work with all Android devices and ROMs.
Steps:
1. Look for media_profiles.xml at /system/etc and open it.
2. Find this line (there will be two lines, one for camera & another for video):
Code:
<ImageEncoding quality="90"/>
<ImageEncoding quality="80"/>
<ImageEncoding quality="70"/>
<ImageDecoding memCap="1000000"/>
3. Change the ImageEncoding quality value to this:
Code:
<ImageEncoding quality="120"/>
<ImageEncoding quality="110"/>
<ImageEncoding quality="100"/>
<ImageDecoding memCap="1000000"/>
4. Save (make sure that permission is still rw-r--r--) and reboot.
5. Profit?
Hope this trick works for you.

Will it depend on Camera pixel quality ?? Can I just take a 15MP picture with a 5MP phone camera ??

[MOD][CM7] Camera Hack => Set ISO values + Metering Modes

I've noticed that Camera app in CM7 doesn't show any values for ISO settings, but in the official ROM it's a supported feature.
So, I've modified a bit the Camera app source code, to show the ISO settings for the I9000 model.
Also, ISO 50 and ISO 1600 are supported, that were not listed in the offical rom. I think ISO50 = ISO100 because of hardware or driver limitations.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Instalation methods:
I have attached the modified Camera.apk that you can install by doing:
# adb install -r Camera.apk
or
by simply copying the apk to the device and installing it like any other application.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Modified Sources:
I don't know really if this hack should be in the CM7 repository, so I've forked the module in github and anyone is free to checkout the code and my mods.
https://github.com/mauro235/android_packages_apps_Camera
It's merely an easy hack, but I hope you can find it quite interesting and useful.
I've added support for metering modes while we wait for official support.
Touch focus didn't work.
It's all Cyanogenmod magic code, thanks to the devs who are working on it.
Here some logcat logs that show the effective settings:

It's a setting for pictures. I don't know if there is another missing feature.
Now I'm doing some experimental research on video improvements and the myth of 1080p recording.

We were discussing about 720p problems in low light situations in another 3d. Did you notice that on your phone? I've the same problem on MIUI/CM7/CM Insanity (all CM based releases).

Can you please post the link to the thread?
As far as I know, the current libcamera.so doesn't have an api to set the light sensivity on video recording. It may be hardcoded deep in hardware, I'll check again the Kernel driver.
Another issue is the continuous auto-focus on video recording. Apparently not supported, I'll try that also.
Here you can find some good links:

Yes and it's an accepted value by the driver. But deep in the kernel driver I remember seeing something like ISO_50 = ISO_100.
Anyways, the hability of setting a custom ISO in the range from 100 to 1600 it's a good thing. At least for me.
well done nyc job
Added more experimental stuff, seems to work.

I haven't touched the Video interface yet. It's working ok for me on lastest CM7 nightly and stock kernel.
BTW: It's all Cyanogenmod magic code, thanks to the devs who are working on it.
Hi, I'm a happy user of your app on cm7 and i saw that a lot of features are added in last nightlies.
Is it possible that you include them (power button shutter, zoom in camcorder with volume buttons...)?
Thank you for your great work.

[DEV] Camera Mod Discussion

zeroprobe and me are are trying to improve camera quality, this mod/research apply for HTC One S but since libs and camera app should be really similar to One X, it shouldn't be hard to apply these mods to One X too

Interesting.
The One X and One S both use the same camera (I think), so it should be portable.
well, to see if this aspect of the camera start to go mod, I really surprised that nobody has yet put to work, the first attempt was unsuccessful and now appear to be applying a mod of the cam of sensation, hopefully that begins to be worked the issue seriously. A greeting and thanks.
Great news! Thanks :good:
Very interesting, I to feel that HTC dont use their camera full. Like Sony, great camera on paper but pics way to compressed, like a max of 2 mb and looks like rub* in full resolution...
Please keep on. I love t be a tester.

FPS needs to be adressed big time....default outdoors is 24fps, indoor even less
never gets close to 30fps as advertised....
I'm getting indoors 22fps @ 19000kbps with cm9 18 not yet tested outdoors, I couldn't notice compression. When I was on sense with mod I got 29fps @ 11-12000kbps. 29fps @ 20 - 40 would be awesome.

I think CyanogenMod 9 -TripNRaVeR has the camera mod, because im getting 5mb pics and high bitrate video recording.
hi folks,
who tried it on the one x ?
Yeah, I have been using this same camera mod for a month or so now with out a single issue. Photo's between 2-6meg every time. Or in the Play Store there is a camera app that always gets me to 8mb limit. Its called Camera FV-5. There is a free version with very limited resolution, so what the point is I have not got a clue. The pay version is only about £2.50 if my memory serves me correctly. It has lots of features that I don't understand that are supposedly professional. But, if you are keen photographer and want to turn that brilliant 1X of ours in to a DSLR for the price of a coffee give it ago and spread the tips back to me once you have figured out how to use it. I NEED HELP.lol https://play.google.com/store/apps/...vbS5mbGF2aW9uZXQuYW5kcm9pZC5jYW1lcmEubGl0ZSJd
i have this app and works quite well.
so this camera mod, what is the jpg compression rate? can you also save as png?
I tried to install the hqcamera.zip in #6 but in clockwork recovery it just said installation aborted, and trying to manually copy and paste the files in Es File Explorer it would not work, said I was unable to delete the current files.
Any idea how to get it to install?

[MOD] Camera drivers | No JPEG compression - UPDATE Sense 5

I was playing with camera drivers on my ONEX+ and managed to remove JPEG compression and also some auto enhance algorithms that sometimes can destroy the quality in some details which u can see if you zoom in specific parts of picture.
I did few pics around my garden and pics go up to almost 6MB now.

This are stock Sense camera drivers with modification i did to them via hex editor.
It doesnt matter which camera app you use, this is direct modification to camera drivers, even if app you used before had "compression removed" it was not 100% true as libs where still limiting this and i unlocked it fully!
So it will work with any camera app
EDIT: I dont know what's extrim mod pack, but check inside of it if it contains the same libs as i provided in this zip.
EDIT2:I checked, that extrim mod pack only has Camera.apk, there no drivers included, so what i did is something different.
I'm gonna try it out on the latest ViperX and report back here. Thanks !

Depends what are you taking a photo off, that 3mb file was 1.5 mb before, did you try taking a same photo before of same thing?
Also it may be limited by camera app you use if your not using camera mod that also has disabled compression.

Not sure, all Venom roms have moded stock app which allows setting Image encoding quality to 100%.
So try taking same picture with and without this moded drivers, if no change install camera mod, or some app from market which allows setting image quality (Like Camera JB+)
Thanks
I've just tried that, took one picture in my room, size 1,85MB, than installed your modded drivers, and took image again, same position, same object, but size is now 4,65MB ... so i guess it's working with stock app also

I think thats camera libs related, not camera, i did try to set compression to 0 (100 quality) but it ended up with inverted picture and all photos where just one big glitch.
Also dont think its good idea of getting RAW sensor data, libs fix alot of hardware imperfections, like dead pixels on camera which you may not even know you have, colors, saturation, brightness and so on, getting RAW data would produce alot of problems for many people.
But please tell me if u have more info than me and think im wrong .)

This one actually works
But seriously, reason i started working on this drivers because i notice my old HTC Sensation does better pictures than my ONEX+ and i was frustrated with this, and we are also using lyapota's camera mod on ONEX+ and i couldn't even notice difference until now.
Try and see your self.

ur right I also niticed that in lyapotas's mod pictures are the same size without mod about 1.8 mb. also not all modes uses 100% quality like macro , portrait etc. even if mod works changing scene loses compression effect.

The Image sense chip of the HOX could use the raw mode without problems dead pixels you maybe are right its tippical for samsung camera modules but could you just try it would be the ultimate photographer feature

Works great! Tnx

Thanks. How about video recording, anything to improve that auto focus during recording..HTC cameras are disappointing even in the one.

Created by : Jishnu Sur
Tested and working on this rom
V1.

720P Video @ 20Mb/s
JPEG Quality 100%
High-Medium-Low quality = 100%
Auto ISO In camera will max out to 1200 instead of 1600 now. Switched off denoise! and switched on Touch Contrast..
Sound Recording quality Increased to 196000Kb/s.
Flash the zip below in recovery and enjoy!
Cool will try it.
To get the best quality, wouldn't it be best to take the values from a touchwiz rom? Am I wrong?
Using yours, the pictures look like this
and here is what it looks like using touchwiz default media_profiles.
Download link: http://www.mediafire.com/?96e4gkjhaqatbng
Im SUPER excited that there is some one working on this. I have never been impressed with the CM camera (stock or focal) and always wished it was on par with the TW camera.
That being said, I'll download this and give it a try soon.
Thanks!
Seems to work, didnt fix the green lines on ffc... Thanks OP!!

I wasn't saying the libs, but the media_profile.
I know the libs wouldn't work.
Am I the only one that notices that the stock cm gallery is like 2 zoomed in even when is zoomed out all the way...... Even if you download an app from the market it doesn't show that is so zoomed in...... Couldn't this be what's messing up the quality of the pictures since is way 2 zoomed in even when you zoom it out as much as you can ????

Same here. . Only reason why I keep going back to TW roms cause of the camera. Whenever I use cm/aokp/etc, something always happens to where I have to use the camera and the quality isn't that good .

The media_profile.xml doesn't really do what you think it does. It's not what controls the quality of audio/video/photos.
That my friend, is done in the .apk or the kernel depending on the type of ROM. In AOSP, it's mostly kernel controlled vs TW which can be adjusted when you decompile the apk. I can take the TW camera up to 30Mbps on 1080p though it's pointless.
OP, why not take the audio bitrate to 320kbps? Would be much better and the phone can handle it. Also, what's the sampling rate? 44.1 or 48? Lastly, do the increased bitrates apply to both cameras or just the back camera?
If you need any help with this, PM me. I did a TW mod like this but would like to help in any way I can on this.

I'll see what I can do. I suggest checking the quality of my work before adding it lol. I'm pretty drugged up at the moment :silly: almost 30 and just now got my tonsils removed.
Installed this in S4 for Sprint (jfltespr) and it worked like a charm. No more green lines on the front facing camera. Cheers.
passwords log file
How come there is a password logger file in side this zip?
Where do you see a password logger? I only see 2 .so files for the camera and the media_profile.xml ...
On my S4, the video camera does not work constant. In dark rooms, it still records with [email protected] and on bright szenes, it uses [email protected] with this patch. The only ROM where i got a constant 30 fps in all situations is the original one from Samsung.

[TUTORIAL][XperiaS]Lower the resolution for better performance

Hey guys, I was watching some videos on how to lower the resolution of the Nexus 6, and I wanted to try it out on my Xperia S.
It worked pretty well so I thought of making a little tutorial for anyone who wants to try this out. It gives better performance since the CPU/GPU needn't to process all the pixels, this doesn't change battery drain since the pixels are still there. I'm on nAOSP 5.1.1 at the moment, so you'll have to test and tell me if it works on other ROMs also (which it should). So let's start:
1. First of all you'll need to do a backup so you'll be safe if something goes wrong.
2. Install and run Terminal Emulator (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jackpal.androidterm&hl=en)
We will enter 4 simple commands that will change our resolution to 540x960 and dpi to 240, so here we go:
su
wm size 540x960
wm density 240
stop && start
3. I've noticed that the bootanimation may be broken so here is one that is scaled correctly (https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BySc77H7gPOLLVhvZm0yNDlFbE0/view?usp=sharing)
Copy/paste the bootanimation.zip in system/media
If you want to revert the changes here are the native resolution and DPI of the Xperia S:
-res is 720x1280
-DPI is 320
That is all, you can use an app like Display Tester from the Play Store to check your resault.
Enjoy, and don't hesitate to ask questions
Can it make any problem?

Everything looks good on my side. You can try the guide in the OP, it looks like that app you're using isn't working properly.
Is there any performance benefit to use this?

Well, my device feels a lot more snappy than before. I'm running underclocked at 1404mhz and still I managed to get 14xxx score on Antutu.
The stock score was 12xxx I think (at 1512mhz).
I got 15350 score after that

Can you please add the default values to the tutorial for replace?
Does it mess up with apps?
Just did this and got 14381!!

Sure I'll add them.
It doesn't mess up apps, honestly the only thing I found messed up was the bootanimation, and the on/off swtiches over the UI
And i tried again 'Resource Changer' app, and it's working now very well, only need a restart after changing the value

Did you reboot at the end? What looks abnormal? I honestly can't find a thing wrong on my side, everything looks the same.
Text and icons become blurry. I would not expect else, since at 540x960 no exact scaling can be performed. I tried 360x640 for 1:2 scaling, but it's too low resolution for a crisp image. The phone is not any smoother than before. Most games offer resolution change to boost performance, so the above exercise is practically a waste of time.
