you can't just put a different carriers sim in the device, you have to SIM unlock it first, and it's my understanding that the FCC restrictions on sim unlocking are pretty specific. call AT&T tell them you need to use the devcie over seas see if they will give you the unlock code, or there are several options out there for unlocking just google "Galaxy Tab3 SM-T217A SIM Unlock", You'll get about 68,400 search results.

As far as I know, the t217a does not have voice capabilities. I use a voip app that allows me to call via data services. I use google hangouts for instant messaging. I do know that text will work but I do not have text on my plan so I don't use it. Hangouts will handle sms now. I have been told that the t217a does not have the hardware for traditional voice services but I don't know if that is true or not.

The SM T217A does indeed have a built in phone but it is locked by the carrier. Once you have unlocked the tab the phone capabilities are also unlocked. Although you may look pretty silly using this big brick as a phone in public

Ive unlocked it and there is no DIALER, SMS works well with hangouts or go sms pro.
You can not make calls on this tablet unless someone makes a ROM for it with the dialer not stripped down like the one in stock rom (unlikely to happen).
In my experience, if you call this tablet from another phone it wont even ring or anything till the carriers voice mail kicks in, this means the phone in this ROM has been permanently disabled.
Also there are NO free ways to unlock it, cheapest one is 19usd(USB reading of NV files), let me know if you want it to hook you up.

did you Root Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 SM T217A for using SMS function from Hangouts ?

Can you please tell me did you use hangouts after rooting the tablet ?
I have installed the version with SMS from android authority but can overwrite on tab by doing that i am not getting the option of SMS or any thing similar to it, so i thought so it might be done if i first root the tablet and completely removed hangout & then again install it, might it work or not sure lol a help would be greatly appreciated, Thank

Yes this is an issue with ATT stock rom. Annoying but workaround is to use Google Voice to check outgoing call log
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747
Just upgraded to JB last night on ATT, using GV 0.4.2.66. Phone has never been rooted, stock ATT always. Problem still exists - place a call and the log shows the relay number, not the actual dialed number. Weirdly, back in August I think, after a bout of uninstalling/reinstalling GV, it worked perfectly for a while. Then some unnoticed update broke it and it started storing relay numbers in log again, and hasn't worked since.
As I understand from the MANY other threads out there on this issue, the problem lies with Samsung and their dialer not talking to GV properly. No-one has yet to have any help from Samsung, but the hope was JB would fix it.
Nope. I use GV all the time, so this is practically a deal-breaker for me
What are the options here ? Is it possible to use the stock JB dialer instead of the Samsung Touchwiz one ? I'll root and put in a different ROM if I have to ...
Thanks -
Google Voice stores relay number in call log, not called number
Is anyone out there using google voice with the S3 (on ATT) ? Have you gotten it to store the actual number you called rather than the damn GV relay number ? This is one of the most popular phones out there, and there are a metric ton of people using GV - surely someone has it working cleanly ?
It's frustrating. No workee for me either. Can't redial.
Actually, I wish Google supported GV more. No APIs, so many things can't be done due to using GV messaging.
According to this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=35616192&postcount=29
Some users (on Verizon?) are seeing it work correctly. This leads me to believe that some builds of 4.1.1 for the S3 may have this functioning correctly.
Some questions:
Does anyone know of any ROMs for the S3 that have the correct behavior with Google voice that work on ATT?
Can we take the dialer from the Verizon S3 and use it on an ATT S3?
Any other suggestions for resolution?

Thanks for pointing it out.
Looks like it is new to market. No reviews. ANd the link to the developer's web page appears to be broken.
I'll keep an eye on it and may try it later.
Would be nice if there were a limited time free version to check out.
I'm running Liquid Smooth rom based on JB 4.1.2 and my GV is working great. I noticed your issue on other roms that I test drove but I never did any troubleshooting to find out why it was happening.

I need google voice also, I have tried and flashed numerous roms, this is a google problem for sure, but this rom here, is stock and it displays the correct caller info everytime, been running this rom for 4-5 days, all #'s are listed correctly....
You can keep looking for an answer as I did, and it will come up with the same issue, google+samsung....quit wasting time and use this link...

Hope this helps, hit thanks button....good luck. BTW the newest version of google voice has issues, revert back to version before the one listed, or you will see some more issues....DO NOT TRY THAT google callback app crap...worthless...
Stock 4.1.1 was showing the routing numbers for GV in the call log, but I've flashed CM10 and the call log is showing the correct contact numbers rather than the routing numbers.

FYI...Jumpsquares is the developer of the app, it appears. He has not responded back here to my response above, so I'm assuming he is not paying any attention to this thread. Just dropped in long enough to advertise.
That being said I am happy with my stock/rooted Rom, and decided it would be easier to spend the $2 on his app than installing a whole new different ROM and reconfiguring everything. But after install, it needs email and password; it would not accept it and move on.
I unstalled for refund. Sent him an email to see what hes replies with. Will post back here if there is any progress.

Google Voice & AT&T JELLY BEAN

When I was using stock ICS from AT&T with my S3 the call log history on google voice would show the GV connect phone numbers in my call history instead of the phone numbers that I was calling. Can anyone with stock Jelly Bean AT&T tell me if this is still the case with AT&T JB ? This is a deal breaker for me as being able to see actual real phone numbers in the call history is a pretty basic function of the phone.
I'm on stock JB AT&T and am still seeing the GV relay numbers in the Call Log, no change from ICS.
There's a setting the JB version of Google Voice to show the Voicemail Display could that be off?
I'm looking for the apparantly missing Call settings page for forwarding the calls to GV for transcription......
Stan more than likely it will fail to forward to GV and you have to set the number manually. Also for voicemail service mine says "My Carrier" but it uses GV. No idea why, but GV works if you put it in manually.

I must have had a brain fart and forgot that Call Settings moved from the logical Network Settings menu to the sort of forgettable Dialer Settings menu in ics/jb. I really think that it should be in both.
I upgraded using the root injected version from MrRobinson and Odin, that keeps my apps and settings so that I didn't have to reconfigure Google Voice.

This is so disappointing. Do you folks think Samsung might fix their buggy ROM on Google Voice call log soon?
If not, what's the best option? I suppose just to go CM10 ? (assuming other stock ROM derivatives might also have this problem?)
If I go CM10 by following the steps listed in the CM GS3 wiki, it will be easy to unroot and relock in case warranty is needed, right? (the wiki had huge warning fonts regarding voiding warranty).
Really hope to know what route you guys take. Google Voice is my only number known to others, and I have to call using that, and the current call log is useless, and this is 2012 with a flagship android phone ....
Thanks.

You just have to configure it manually, just like the original rom. Put your Google number into the forward number settings. Even though it will say that My Carrier is the answering service, select Google at least once and Google WILL BE the answer services, and you will get messages transcription in the Google voice app. If you set Google voice to do all calls or ask you how you want to call it will bring up a dialogue box. I don't use the incoming call keypad stuff, but I assume that they would work on a incoming Google call.

GV voicemail actually worked for me, as I initially set it up by using the code provided by GV website. My concern is with the called numbers shown in the call log. They are relay numbers not my contact numbers ..... Never had this with my old Nexus One.. And I see many complaints if you search for "google voice call log numbers, galaxy s3 or galaxy note II". Some claim CM10 fixes this, but would like to get some insight into this before I void the warranty for this .... Why can't Samsung get things right out straight

while the phone in the phone's call list IS a routing number, the calls' correct number are recorded in the GV widget's PLACED list. You have to use the new "Show All Labels" to get there.

Could you point me to the particular CM10 version you use with ATT GS3? Did you follow the CM wiki direction ? Also, I suppose the route back to stock/lock/unroot is easy in case we need warranty, right?
I don't care ICS/JB... as long as there are no known issues/lags/fcs, and GV voice mail and call log display work as they should (as with N1 in 2010 or even earlier...) --- I can't believe we have to work so hard to get that ...
Thanks!
I had to remove voicemail from my phone in the Voice settings page. Then I had to add GV voicemail back to my phone with the forwarding code via GV. Now I am working, though it seems to take a lot of rings to kick to voicemail. Like 10 or so.

Can N7 2013 3G/LTE make calls in some way?

Hi, I've got a Nexus 7 2013 Wi-Fi only but this device is very nice and having a 7" device with me everyday is not a problem, so I'm thinking to sell my smartphone, sell my Nexus and buy another Nexus 2013 3G/LTE.
Is there a way to make calls? Maybe installing a ROM or doing some hack, everything...
If yes, what must I do?
Thank you and sorry for my bad, bad, bad english.

No, I can't: here in Italy no one use Google Voice, my friends and my family use Vodafone IT and we call each other free with some offers.
I'm looking for some way to make regoular calls.
Thank you
I think the only way to make calls is to use VoIP. You can set in the app that when you call from VoIP it will show your real number.. but people will not be able to call you back. Or maybe you could leave your phone at home, and set call forwarding to an VoIP number?
They don't need Google voice for you to use it.
With voice+ on cm11 you can text through Google voice to any regular phone number.
There could be a way in the future with some modification, I read the other day that AT&T and Tmobile are testing VoLTE (Voice Over LTE). Sounds like the ATT could be out sooner than Tmobile. Maybe we will get something at the end of the year.

MMS and Voice over wi-fi only

My ATT cell service just got cut off and not going to be able to have it for a while but I am on wi-fi most of the time anyway.
It would be great if I was able to keep my old number but I dont think that is possible but at least can I do MMS and SMS and hopefully voice too from my phone over wi-fi alone with no data network?
I thought WhatsAPP was able to do this but I cant figure it out.
Any insight to this? Would prefer to use WhatsApp but if there are better alternatives I am all ears!

Ok thanks for the heads up. So I already had Google Voice from long ago but never used it and went to the Google Voice website and it asked me to download the dialer to my phone so I did and it allowed me to place outgoing calls which is fine. I called my friend and he said the caller ID did not show up it was "unidentified" on my Google Voice page it gives me a "Your access number" is that my phone number that people can call my phone on because he tried and it does not work says call cannot be completed as dialed.

You got kakaotalk in the play store that has phone calls and texts for free over wifi, but I'm not sure if it asks for your phone number for a confirmation text message. Also, there is hangouts that has texts and video/voice calls and it doesn't need your phone number at all. Just wifi, only the other person needs to be on hangouts as well.

Yes I am aware of that. My issue is that I have a large balance on that number so I realize when I can pay that balance I will. I have seen people do it before I just dont know how they were doing it (may have not been Google Voice)

OK never-mind I figured it out. I am up and running on my phone that was just shut off from ATT with a huge bill by:
1. Getting an app that will allow me to send and receive text and voice call for free and will allow you to view your unique phone number.
2. Sign up for Google Voice.
3. Put the number in Google Voice from step one.
4. Download "Google HANGOUTS DIALER" from Google Play store. It fully supports MMS and SMS texts and calls in and out!
5. Set default text and call apps to "Hangouts Dialer" and you are all set!
SUPER happy about this. No more cell bill ever!

From what I understand all carriers remove the phone and messaging apps and only allow tablets as data only. Only international unlocked tablets from overseas have phone and messaging apps. Now whether or not they could be added back through a new ROM is not yet clear.

I'm using Pulse SMS as my default text messaging for my Samsung Note 9 and have it installed on my tablet as well as other devices, and I use it on my desktop through their web app or Chrome app. It works flawlessly. Much better than the current version of Android/Google Messages. Unfortunately, doesn't work for calls. I use Google Voice still for voice calls to/from all my devices. A while back, I ported my VZW number to Google Voice so I have more flexability on calling. My biggest frustrat the moment is that Verizon doesn't seem to be pushing out updates for the tablet like they do the phones. I'm a few months behind on the security patch for Android on this tablet. Not happy about it.
I have a Verizon S7 Edge cell, and was able to load Verizon Messenger Plus on my wifi Tab S4. It let's me send and receive texts using the Verizon cell number on the tablet. It used to let you make and receive cell phone voice calls over WiFi, but they disabled that feature.
Just get the T-Mobile version using Digits app to use S4 Tablet as a phone
I have it on my Galaxy Tab S4 works great not needing to bring phone along too,

I have a Verizon S7 Edge cell, and was able to load Verizon Messenger Plus on my wifi Tab S4. It let's me send and receive texts using the Verizon cell number on the tablet. It used to let you make and receive cell phone voice calls over WiFi, but they disabled that feature.

So they have reactivated calling on the Verizon Messenger Plus app!
First, you need to specify a 911 address. The default is your billing address - which is my work office and needed to be changed to the home address. When you enable the calling function, you both receive calls to your cell (e en if the cell is powered off) and can place calls from your tablet.
The limitations:
1) There doesn't seem to be a way change away from the default ring tone. Maybe 8f you sync contacts with 6our phone?
2) There doesn't seem to be a way to independently set the ringer volume - it is loud and controlled by the multi-media volume. If you are listening to music or video and the multi-media volume is high, the ringer is high.
It is just a button push to turn the calling function on and off.
