I flashed PARANOIDANDROID 2.99 BETA3 from stock DLK4, 4.1.1. It worked but I was ready to revert back to the stock using the nandroid I made before flashing and realized that I did a factory reset when flashing pdroid and lost my nandroid backups. Fortunately I have older Nandroids from 12.12 on my pc. I placed it into the clockworkmod directory, sdcard\clockworkmod\backups, as I normally would but when I reboot into recovery I don't see the nandroid that I placed there. What do I do from here? I tried to do a factory reset from kies of DLK4 but afterwards I get stuck on the "Samsung" loading screen.
Any help would be appreciated. I spent the last 4 hours going through treads as I normally do when having problems but I created my first thread because I screwed up beyond what I can repair myself

You flashed a 4.2 ROM with an out of date recovery by the sound of it. 4.2 modifies the directory structure of you're phone which is unsupported in old recoveries. I run TWRP myself and I just moved my backups to my new root folder which can be found in: /storage/emulated/0
CWM stores recoveries in blobs and I'm unsure if this method will work for you. Your only option if that doesn't work is to ODIN back to stock. Once you've performed an ODIN back, go into your recovery and factory reset, wipe cache and wipe dalvik.
Then update your recovery for future flashes. I recommend TWRP. Overall an easier recovery.

I successfully flashed back to stock 4.1.1 using ODIN using the rom I got from samsung-updates. I've lost IMEI so I have to inject l that back later on. I'm using CWM 6.0.1.2 and when in recovery when I try to restore my backup and get to "error while restoring /system!"
I've been trying to find other threads, tried what they suggested but no luck
edit: I've found TWRP v2.3.3.1 and but I don't see /storage/emulated/0 instead I put my backup in /storagr/TWRP/BACKUPS/911de9 and tried to restore but it fails
What I did was make a nandroid on the ROM you have and just copy and paste the old one into the new directory and you can flash that old nandroid. Worked perfect for me

This is what I typically do but now I get "error while restoring /system!" when restoring any of my old nandroid backups!
Why I like twrp. Maybe most of it is just a placebo but it seems more stable and easier to navigate

Sorry its long but i want all the info out there might help with a answer. Last night I went step by step install cm10 nightly. Did the cwm update through rom manager as instruction said to cwm 6.0.2.3 (non touch) did a nandroid of my stock rooted setup. Then did all the wipes and clears all of them. Installed cm 10 let it boot then installed gapps let it boot and settle. I liked it but seamed like something was not right speed wise. Quadrent showed it had dropped to around 3500 where I was getting around 5600 on stock rooted. Went to nandroid back and it could not find back up. Nothing at all showed on internal card through cwm. But when hooked to pc everything was there. So I copied the backup to pc and to ext. Sd card. Cwm found the backup on ext.but said missing something so didnt work. So I nandroid the cm10 I was running checked restore and it worked to nandroid cm10. So I hooked to computer went to backup file and replaced the files with files from my stock rooted I had saved to pc. Cwm restored it perfect back to stock rooted after doing that. Now before I check out other roms could something be wrong with my cwm causing the nandroid problem and also why such low scores on cm 10?

Quadrant score means absolutely nothing, don't base yourself on them.
You can change your kernel settings (governor, scheduler) to get a better performance if the current one don't work well with your phone.
I'm not sure why your nandroid wasn't working but I expect it's cause it was made without the cwm recovery.

as has been said, quadrant is a joke. if you have an sd card, next time you make a backup in recovery, select "backup to external sd". that will save your nandroid to a location that will remain untouched during your wipes.

Use TWRP ? I prefer how it stores nandroids....although I had the same issue as you with TWRP where it was there when I explored with PC but TWRP could find it. I had to move folder around in windows and put them back into the correct folders. Then created a nandroid on ext card and only moved it when I needed to flash it.

Speaking of twrp when I go to rom manager and click recovery where you update cwm under installed recoverys it list I have cwm and twrp installed how is that?

You can only have one recovery installed as it saves it as recovery.img. If you install a new one the old one is written over. This has always been my experience. You can install the new recovery in Goo Manager like you do with CWM in Rom Manager.
OK, so I'm used to phones with external SD cards where backing up was very easy. With the GN its a pain in the ass. After flashing a rom and factory resetting it, CWM can not find my back ups. I can see them with root explorer on the "sdcard" but CWM doesn't. I tried dragging them to /data/media/, but cwm doesn't see them.
I saved the back up to my pc before resetting as well. Where can I put it so CWM sees it?
I have the same problem with Titanium Back up. I backed up all apps and data, but after the wipe they were gone. I saved the back up on my PC but now I don't see a titanium backup folder to drag them too.
I realize this question has been asked before but all my research points me to dead ends.
Any help would be appreciated.
edit: was able to to drag an old backup to CWM, tried to restore and it failed. Phone is now stuck at Google logo :/. Factory resetting it again did not help.

It doesn't matter, I flashed back to stock and rerooted. How can I avoid this in the future. It seems that if I wipe data I lose my back ups. How can I save my back ups in the future?

If you just put your backup in data/media/ then CWM might not see it. Mine are in data/media/clockworkmod/backup/
This is why I use TWRP now.
I've had a bad CWM backup/restore operation fail. I think the dev of CWM is losing the ball and TWRP is starting to become the better recovery solution now.

I've never once had any errors or failed operations or issues of any kind since using CWM Recovery. Even with my old phone (which was not technically CWM, but based on it). Its hard for me to blame CWM and say that those issues are NOT user error.
If you go from a 4.1.X ROM to a 4.2.X ROM then you will have this problem because it changes the file structure that android uses. Same would occur on TWR. You just need to move the files to the correct location after the fact.

Problem is that I tried moving the backup from the old location to the new. When I tried to restore, it failed and never was able to boot past the google logo. I had to unroot and flash back to stock. A great feature that I wish CWM had would be to direct it to where we keep the backup and just restore from there. Since the change from 4.1 to 4.2 I have read many people having similar issues.
Do you have cwm making a md5 for your backup? If not hat is the only time I've had trouble restoring. I've switched from 4.2 to 4.1 and vice versa multiple times without problems.
Also are you using cwm touch or non touch?

Also, like others have said, make sure you are using the latest CWM. You can easily get it by downloading ROM manager and selecting "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery". It will also tell you what version you have and what version is the latest.
Thanks for the help. I'm also having problems with titanium back up. I copied the backup folder before the wipe, I dragged the files back to the titanium back up folder but TB doesn't recognize the back ups.

In Titanium Backup, select menu then preferences. Scroll down and select backup folder location. Tap the "detect" button then whole device. It should find it.
Also I'd grab a cheap otg adapter... And a 32gig min flash drive to backup to. I have mine run overnight (otg w/charging port) it's basically like having external just deciding when you need it

an up to date version of CWM or TWRP will 'move' (actually rename with the new path) your file system for you so you don't have to do it manually - that's why peeps keep on telling you to update your recovery...

I have the same exact problem. When I try to move the backup to the main sdcard directory (a 3 gig file) it fails halfway through. No matter if I use adb push or windows/mtp to copy/paste the file.
Any ideas? Please help, I just want to restore my old rom with all my data. I dont care about 4.2 if I dont have my data.
EDIT:
I FIXED IT! This is how I did it. I had backed up my SD card (including clockwork backups) to my computer using adb pull. So I used clockworkmod recovery to format the SD card and /data/media. Then I started up the phone. I used windows to copy the backups to the phone. Now when I went to clockwork and tried to use the restore backup, it worked correctly. I'm now back to my old phone

I am reviving this thread because I would like to know if there is any way to preserve CWM backups and Titanium Backup files when wiping data for a new ROM install.
Is it possible to create a symlink using terminal and link to a static directory which could be protected from wiping data? This is granted the shell permits symlinks.

First of all I am a novice when it comes to this sort of thing. I was running Paradigm 2.3.5. Created a clockworkmod backup using version 5.0.x.x (can't remember the exact version). I then wiped data, wiped cache, installed Paradigm 3.1, installed gapps, and booted. Well I decided I wasn't ready to re do everything I have done to my phone and I wanted to go back to my previous backup. I restarted into recovery, but when I attempted a recovery I get no files found. The files are still there if I look through a usb connection. I understand this has something to do with the /0 folder and moving from 4.1 to 4.2 android. I'm not sure what to do here I just want to restore my phone to before all of this mess. I also understand there are other topics on this issue, and I have been looking through them for hours now, but I can't seem to get anything to work. Please help.
Edit: I was able to download a file manager and transfer the clockwork backups into the correct clockwork folder and then restore to my previous rom. I still would like to know if it is possible to flash a new rom without losing all of your files and apps.

You shouldn't lose your files if you wipe unless you wipe sdcard (in a custom recovery). You can save data and apps with titaniumbackup.

Yes I never lost any files they were still on my sdcard, but there was an sdcard\ and an sdcard\0 with duplicate folder except one of the duplicates were empty. So your saying if I do a back up with titaniumbackup then flash a new rom that uses android 4.2.2 or 4.3 I can then restore with titaniumbackup and have all my old data and apps on the new rom?
Do a search on the GNEX Development forum for the current version of CWM. 6.0.4.0 was just posted earlier today.

If I now make a backup with CWM, clear files/factory reset, clear cache, and flash latest rom, I can then boot and it will be like nothing changed as far as my app configurations and data goes? If not, is there a way to do that? Will titan do that for me?

Think of CWM as an image bu of your phone. If something messes up when you flash that latest rom, you can restore the bu and all will be back to the way it was pre-flash. TiBU will backup your apps and data, so after you do a clean flash you can restore them. My personal preference for a clean flash is to let the Play Store restore my apps, then use TiBU to restore the data for my user apps. I've found TiBU to be a bit of a crap shoot when it comes to system apps. There's always a bit of work involved with a clean flash, but it's not too much and will usually save some headaches.

Well this weekend I decided to flash CM 10.2. I backed up to titanium, I backed up to cwm latest version, factory reset, flashed CM 10,2, flashed gapps, booted, play store repopulated my apps. Open titanium backup "no backups found", tell it to detect the backup folder on whole device, no backups found. So I just ran my cwm restore and when I boot I get a whole new error. When I try to browse my files with astro file browser I get "cannot downgrade database from 2 to 1". What is wrong now?

I just tried to do another cwm backup because I was going to move around some files through usb, it took forever and then in the end failed because the boot image was messed up. It said something about free space so I deleted all but the most recent cwm backup and then the backup that failed before was able to finish. After doing that I booted again and I was able to browse my files with astro again. So that isn't an issue anymore, but there has got to be something wrong with my file structure that this keeps happening.
I have two 0 folders, is that normal. From root I have storage\sdcard0\0\0 and that contains my data from before I started any of this flashing from 4.1. storage\sdcard0\0 has duplicate folders of storage\sdcard0\0\0 but they are empty. There is also a folder called sdcard in the root folder. So obviously there is a huge mess here. Is there a tool I can run to clean it up, or can someone tell me how the file structure is supposed to be so I can just move things back the the way it should be.

I ended up copying the files in the deepest 0 folders out to the 0 folder above them then removing the deepest 0 folder. I now have sdcard\0 which only has a clockworkmod folder with a recovery file in it, and storage\sdcard0\0 which when I go into the 0 folder I get routed to sdcard\0. Everything seems to be working fine still. I'm thinking about just combining the sdcard0 with the sdcard and removing the sdcard0 since I'm currently on android 4.1. Then with everything cleaned up I might give it another go.
I made a backup and flashed a custom ROM yesterday. I then restored to the backup. Today I tried a new ROM aosp 4.4, but I didn't backup before flashing the rom, thinking that I still had the backup from yesterday to fall back to, and I didn't really use my phone after restoring yesterday. Now in Rom Manager under "Manage and Restore Backups" It reads "No Backups Found." Am I hosed? Or is there any way to recover my old backup?
All I really want is my numbers I don't think I ever synced to my google account. I also still haven't figured out how to activate the phone in the new rom, but I'm sure I can find that in FAQ

Aosp roms do not have activation settings. Only stock ROMs do. And depending on your recovery, new ones can read your SD after using 4.2+ ROMs, but old ones can't. You still have the backup but since you flashed a 4.4 ROM you now have an 0 directory and the recovery reads that as your main storage. You need to flash a 4.1 ROM or move everything to the 0 folder. Either that or just update your recovery.

my Rom Manager shows:
Current Reovery: ClockworkMod 6.0.4.5
Latest Recoery: ClockworkMod 6.0.3.8
ClockworkMod Touch is available!
When I go to Update Recovery it asks if I have installed a ClockworkMod Recovery manually. Do I need to do this?
If I flash a 4.1 rom will my yesterday's backup be available in my rom manager? Is that what you are saying? This is my priority, over my activation.

I'm not very familiar with Rom Manager but from the current recovery/latest recovery you posted it seems that the latest recovery according to rom manager is 6.0.3.8, but you have a newer version than that currently installed. I think that's why it's asking if you did it manually. Your current backup should be located at /data/media/clockworkmod. You want to copy that to data/media/0/clockworkmod. Use a root file explorer of your choosing to navigate to where your old backup is, copy it and move it that location and it should pop up. Most file managers open to internal storage(which is currently your 0 folder) by default, just go to the root of your file system and you will see the /data/ folder Im talking about. Hope this helps!

With that recovery, It should still read it unless you moved it / renamed it from data/media/clockworkmod.

I think that's why it's asking if you did it manually. Your current backup should be located at /data/media/clockworkmod. You want to copy that to data/media/0/clockworkmod. Use a root file explorer of your choosing to navigate to where your old backup is, copy it and move it that location and it should pop up. Most file managers open to internal storage(which is currently your 0 folder) by default, just go to the root of your file system and you will see the /data/ folder Im talking about. Hope this helps!

When I install a root file manager from the web it doesn't show-up on my phone. This is the case for any apps I try to install. For this reason, I am using my PC to browse the files.
My internal storage has no "data" directory. It has a "clockworkmod" directory and a "0" directory, and also a "0/clockworkmod".
The images I found that I believe are my backup were located in my Freegee directory. When I copy them to 0/clockworkmod they don't show up when I try to restore from Rom Manager.
Any thoughts?
I'm experiencing a similar issue using the mako CWM from freegee. In addition to not seeing my backups, my storage is being devoured by an "emulated 0/ legacy folder". Is this safe to delete?
Also, it seems the recovery is reading from device/data/media/cwm and not from storage 0 or storage/emulated 0. I actually copied a backup to device/data/media in order to flash it.
I guess what I need is info on what I can safely do in file explorer to get back on track.

Ok, I'm a bit confused here. Are you still using AOSP 4.4? Did you flash Gapps? Just wondering why you are installing from the web instead of the play store(maybe you just meant play store when you said web). Since you are browsing files from your pc Internal Storage IS /data/media. If you were using a file manager with root on your phone you would be able to see files that don't normally show up on your computer. Thats the system root directory. But the important part is that /data/media=internal storage, you simply can't see it that way from a pc(at least I can't). If you can see the clockwordmod directory, copy that to 0 so that it replaces 0/clockworkmod and then try to restore your backup. That is the way it should be but I advise checking to see which one of those folders has something in it, and copying it to the empty one. Essentially ONE of the clockworkmod folders should have files, and one shouldn't. If BOTH folders are empty, I don't think you have a cwm backup......
Freegee automatically makes a backup when you run it, but was that your only backup? Again I don't use Rom Manager, but my understanding is if you make a backup with it, it would be in your clockworkmod folder. I wouldn't think it would be in the FreeGee folder. New FreeGee may be different(I know it was recently completely overhauled) but the version I had made backups of very important things but did not automatically make a cwm or twrp backup. Custom recoveries backup your data and system, FreeGee backed up your boot, sbl's, recovery, etc.

I'm not sure about the emulated 0/legacy folder. What's in it? I just need a bit more info! You said you copied a backup to flash it. I'm assuming it failed? Are you also running AOSP 4.4 or another rom? For me it works like this. If I'm on lg stock or stock based roms my backups are in /data/media/cwm or /data/media/twrp depending on what recovery I am using. If I'm on something like CM or Omni, Carbon, etc it creates a 0 folder located in /data/media and uses that as the sdcard/internal storage. Once that happens that is what the recovery reads from. But are you saying the opposite happened?

To clarify further coming from stock I got a failed flash for cm 11 using twrp. I then DL cwm from freegee and wiped all partitions except internal storage, flashed cm 11 and gapps with cwm and was successful except I had no service. In looking for my efs backup I discovered the emulated 0 folder(( storage0/emulated0/freegee/backup)) I moved the efs backup to the root of storage0 but cwm didn't list it. I made a note of what I was able to see in cwm which led me to device/data/media/cwm. I copied the efs to said folder and was then able to view and flash successfully with cwm. I hope that's clearer.

Lol it's ok, for a second I was confused. When you say you wanna get back on track, what exactly do you want to do? Are you trying to restore your stock backup to clean up and do a clean install of something else? Or are you just trying to restore a backup? And when you say flash failed for TWRP, do you mean installing twrp or flashing cm11 with twrp? CWM is definitely what you needed for that, but if you had twrp first, and made backups with it, they obviously wouldnt work with CWM. If your backups were all made with CWM, just copy the backups to the directory its reading from and it should pop up.
My best advice would be to do a fresh start. Restore your stock backup(hopefully you made one) and then once you are booted back into it, delete the 0 folders. If you see your backups in recovery but restoring them gives you a failed error, I don't know what to tell you there.
And no problem, I ask a lot of questions because the clearer we are with one another, the better I can help!

Oh ok sorry I didnt see the last reply. Can you tell me what was in the freegee/backup folder? I think the new freegee is pretty different....my version of freegee backed up efs, but they were named differently if I backed them up with twrp.
But the fact remains that if your stock backup was twrp, you cant restore that with cwm. If you want to go back to stock to start over, you have to flash twrp again.
And are you also using rom manager or doing this manually?

I then rebooted system opened freegee and got the cwm mako, did another backup, rewiped, and flashed cm 11 and gapps successfully. When I booted into system I had no service and went to flash the efs backup I made which is what sent me on my goose chase. Hahaha!

Yeah a lot of people failed flashing cm11 with TWRP. What did you back up efs with, freegee? The only recovery Ive used that showed EFS as a backup option was TWRP 2.5.0.0. Newer TWRP didnt for me(but that may not have been the twrp from this version of FreeGee). I've only used CWM once on this phone to try cm11, but I flashed back to TWRP and my daily driver backup.
As far as the freegee/backup folder it contains the efs backups I made with twrp and cwm as well as the twrp and cwm mako zips and a bunch of boot image files.
My goal initially was to make sure I can flash back to my stock image which you have answered.
My next thing is that this emulated0 folder, which is identical to storage0 is taking up all of my storage space and I want to know if deleting it will muck things up.

If you flash back to stock, the answer to that is no. Flash back to stock then just delete the whole 0 folder. Stock uses data/media/, AOSP/CM based uses /data/media/0. So storage 0 and emulated 0 can both go once you are back in stock.
That makes sense. I'll give it a whirl and post results. I'll flash back to twrp recovery, flash my stock backup and try to clean up my sd card. I'm using es file explorer btw.

I don't have play store so I tried to get apps off web. I don't know why I don't have play store, I would assume it would come with the custom rom, but one of my main problems now is I can't add any apps additional what came with the rom.
The data/media thing makes sense, but I still can't get a file viewer because I cant get apps to show up.
I have copied every image file I can find on my phone into the clockworkmod folder and still my rom manager doesn't see any back-ups. several of these images are actually called "backup." I am pretty sure though that none of them were in the clockworkmod folder origonally. How do I flash the Freegee backup?
I think my main bottleneck right now is getting any apps to install. any thoughts.

Install 4.4 Gapps Standard the same way you installed AOSP 4.4. Links/directions should be in the thread where you got the rom. EDIT: If you installed 4.4 via rom manager, dont install gapps that way. Actually reboot into recovery and install the gapps zip file. Just wipe cache and dalvik then install gapps. Im not sure why you cant install apps. If it's from the web, you may need to enable "Install from unknown sources" under security. But if you already have, Im not sure. May be a rom/bad flash issue.
I should have said this before, stop using rom manager. Apps like that seem like they make things easier, but then something like this happens. One size fits all apps of any kind can have issues depending on model of phone. It's not difficult to reboot into recovery and make/restore your backups that way. Its far less likely that something will go wrong or get lost. Just food for thought moving forward.
You've already restored the backup once so it should be there, but if neither of the clockworkmod folders had anything in them, that's not a good sign......
I believe you flash the freegee backup from freegee itself. There should be a "restore with backups option. But again, it's not the same kind of backup you get with twrp or cwm. Those recoveries make nandroid backups which is your major system components i.e, your system and data from whatever rom you're using/apps you have at the time. Depending on the recovery they may back up EFS, cache, boot, etc. FreeGee backs up boot, efs partitions and sbl partitions. I've never seen CWM or TWRP touch the sbl, but if you lose the sbl, you lose download mode(which is the ONLY way to fix your phone if something goes horribly wrong!). Maybe new FreeGee is different, but the older version of the app's backup was meant to get you back where you could flash something, a backup, new rom, etc - but didnt just make a nandroid of your current working rom.

It's in this 4.4 port for the ls970 thread. Scroll down to the directions. You'll see it say Install Rom, Flash Gapps with a link to Banks gapps. Gapps=Google Apps. You usually have to flash that separately with roms to get things like the play store app.
