4.4.2 bug? Affects CM11 - LG Nitro HD

Hi guys,
I installed the Feb 18 CM11 nightly and quickly came across a problem with a service for one of the apps I wrote being killed, but never restarted.
Long story short, long-running background services (no notification) started with "START_STICKY" are not re-started after being killed in KitKat 4.4.2 like they were in other android versions. The fact that they are killed after some time (or after swiping away from the recent apps list) is normal, but failing to restart is not normal. If you go into Running Services, you can spot affected applications with at least 1 service running but with "0 processes".
This breaks a lot of apps, including widgets that update based on information from a service. Facebook messenger's process is even killed after some time, and notifications no longer come in.
The behavior is fine on 4.4 but is like I describe on 4.4.2 and coincidentally the newest builds of CM11.
Here's the bug someone posted on google:
https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=63793
There hasn't been any official response from Google, so no one seems to know if this is an intentional change.
Thoughts?

[Q] Best way do debug a 4.1.2 that started crashing/rebooting?

I have a Note II (N7100) with Android 4.1.2 (rooted, but with a stock Samsung ROM and no changes except some bloatware freeze and autoruns/receivers disable for a few pesky apps).
It has been quite stable, I got up to almost three months uptime with it before, while using it heavily (even co-workers were impressed). :fingers-crossed:
About two weeks ago, that changed. It started hanging up and rebooting often. First about once or twice a day, but not it can do it even more. Sometimes it reboots on its own, sometimes it just freezes when I do something (unlock or open a specific app).
It is definitely something I installed or changed recently, but I'm having trouble locating the cause. I am having trouble locating the culprit, but here is what I tried so far:
- Used Reboot Logger to keep track of reboots.
- Snooped around logcat after reboots with Elixir and LumberJack, but found nothing interesting.
- Used Titanium Backup and Changelog to see the most recent apps installs/updates. Froze a few of those, but no change.
Other things:
- My Note2's RAM is fine. I did a full check some time ago and plus, had those 3 month uptimes.
- I have done no checks on the microSD card. Have no reasons to think something got corrupted, but have not checked yet (not sure how, too).
Two of the changes I did recently involved some core apps, but I am not sure I can just freeze those without a big mess:
-Busybox
-Maps 7.0.2
-Google Play Services 3.1.59
-Google Search 2.6.7.721924
-Elixir + Elixir Widget 2.33
Anyone has some more ideas on how to try to find out what is causing these hands/reboots? I would like to dig a big further before I give up and go for a full wipe.
Get Titanium Backup and list all apps, sorted by installation date. Then freeze like most recent X apps And see if it starts behaving. If it is OK, just unfreeze one app at a time until you bumb into the one making problems

I have Titanium Backup. That is actually a pretty good suggestion, thanks. Meanwhile I also found this app, which I might give a try to keep an eye on some sort of changelog.
Anyone has more ideas? Still working around this issue.

[Q] launcher crash every once n awhile

Hi, im running AndroidNow 6.1 and since i installed ot for the first time(version 3.2) my launcher crushes every once n awhile.
It happens with stock, google, nova or any other launcher - i prefer stock.
What happens really is, when i press home/back to exit an app to the homescreen, there pops the recent apps screen(with no open apps visible)and when i press home again to exit this screen , i see blank home page and then the icons refresh and everything reload. Latet when i open the app drawer i experience a little lag that the icons are reloaded also.
What seems to be the problem? Im rooted and ive got clean master but i dont think its related.
Please help me, thanks.
Am i the only one who experience this?
Happened to me few times. You are using 3rd party launcher?
Ps. You dont need clean master
i use the stock one,but it happned with all . why shouldn't i use it?
Tell me why you should?
This devices does not need that. It does more harm then use.
I love the feature that it prevents apps from starting on boot up.
Do you know how to solve my problem with the launcher crash?
I have the exact same problem.
This happened with the stock ROM and any launcher I tried.
Then I flashed a custom ROM (based on stock though), progressively reinstalled applications and after some time, the problem came again. Then, I progressively froze some applications with Titanium Backup, and now it happens much less than before (2-3 times a day against everytime I press "home").
My conclusion is that, even though that's a launcher crash we see, the fault probably comes from a background application. I'm still searching which one. Did you find something interesting since you opened the topic?
Have you installed hotmail app from play store?

What I did recently was to :
- Disable the application "LIA Informant"
- Disable the application "LIA MrGDBLogger"
- Disable the application "LIA S4URecommender"
- Clear the cache (click on Settings > Storage > Data in cache)
The problem happened several times in a day before, but only occured a few times in weeks since I did this trick. The workaround was probably clearing the cache. But since the problem gradually came back after the last time I reinitialized the phone, I'm still afraid it comes back sooner or later.
I did clear cache a few times now - it always comes back.
Would be great if someone could find a fix for that, because it's very annoying.
The bad thing is that there is no send error report option. At least there would be a starting point with an error info etc.
Have you tried disabling the applications mentionned above?
I (almost) chose them randomly, but it really made a difference for me and the problem doesn't seem to come back.
Done that just now.
Will post back with the results in some time.
Do you maybe know what those apps do ? (I like to know what I'm turning off in case of any other problems)
GDB (in the Unix world) is a debugger. I have no reason to think that this GDB is the same though, I just guessed the problem should come from a system application and this one may be one.
Turning off those apps made no difference.
Was thinking that it may be one of the widgets on the home screen.
Later today, or maybe tomorrow I'll make a list of what I'm using and post it here - maybe this way we'll get whats causing this.
The only widgets I have now are Zooper Widget and Shuttle+.
But honestly, since the problem makes any launcher crash (and I think any application left in foreground when the screen turns off), I believe the root of the problem a system app/optimization, and likely one from LG since not many people seem to complain.
I hope 5.1.1 will come soon to the G3.
Any news on any update ? (not necessarily to 5.1.1)
Udated to 20p yesterday - clean update (just to be sure I've wiped 3 times - 1 before and 2 after the update).
Had a couple of hours of peace, and then it started again.

I updated to CM 12.1 two weeks ago and never encountered this problem since then.

[Q] Phone freezes and is slow after all kinds of troubleshooting

Hello,
I've done lots of searching for answers to my questions here and elsewhere and come up empty-handed, so I apologize if I've missed something and this has been covered already.
My phone occasionally runs smoothly and fast, like it's supposed to. More often -- pretty much every time I need to interact with the phone and across all apps I use -- it freezes when I tap on something, whether it's to open an app or interact with an app that's already running. It will completely freeze up for anywhere from five to 15 seconds before reacting, and it's extremely frustrating at times. Sometimes, the screen will time out before I can enter my PIN to unlock it; sometimes when somebody calls and I tap "answer," the phone doesn't react fast enough to actually answer and I miss the call. As I said, very frustrating. It did this both before the update to Lollipop last week, and after.
Here's what I've tried: Hard reset; restarting; deleting or disabling all the apps (including Blinkfeed) I thought I safely could, usually just one or two at a time. I've run it in safe mode, and the phone works normally that way -- I just can't figure out what's making it freeze up. I've run a CPU monitor program, and haven't seen any huge spikes from any apps; and according to the app manager in settings, I typically have about 1G of RAM free.
I'm very hesitant to root the phone, mostly because this is a warranty replacement for a Verizon M7 I had rooted (and returned to stock), and none of the ROMs I tried with the previous phone worked well -- if at all -- with the security policies I am required to use to log in to my employer's Exchange server. Those policies include data encryption.
I'm running stock Lollipop 5.0.2 and Sense 6.0 on Build number 6.22.605.3, Baseband 1.13.41.1209.
If anybody has ideas for me to try, I'd greatly appreciate it. My upgrade date is late August of this year, but it's getting harder and harder to live with this phone, which I absolutely need for my work.
Thank you very much in advance.
It's been a month now since the Lollipop update. I have read through a few threads about performance issues in general after the update. I am going to assume that your phone too has become a victim of the update. I have NOT updated to Lollipop. Mainly because of my recent root and install of TWRP custom recovery, EX Kernel and ViperROM 7.0.2. If these issues aren't resolved, I will not update. Besides, KitKat is doing great for me. I would suspect certain services not running in safe mode that allow the phone to react normally as opposed to all services running in normal mode. Have you contacted VZN and/or HTC for possible t/sing solutions? I see that you have done what I would've done. After failing I would assume it is because of the Lollipop update

Background apps super low priority / not triggering

My SGS4 (T-Mobile) is a bit over 2 years old now. I had been running a modified TouchWiz rom (I believe it was this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2679913), but recently I started having problems where the phone was missing triggers - alarms wouldn't go off, TextSecure would receive all my messages all in one big lump only after I opened the app, stuff like that.
I tried reflashing a number of ROMs, and I've currently landed on a recent CM12.1 nightly, but I'm still getting this problem where apps running in the background don't seem to have enough priority to get the phone to wake up and alert me that something is happening.
Does anyone know of a way to figure out what's going on? Any suggestions on diagnosing this?
(I have tried messing with PrivacyGuard on CM12.1, in case it's a separate issue, but the problem persists with it enabled or disabled).

Android OTA 8.0.0 update issues

Both my S7A and my girl's S7 Edge got the upgrade to OTA 8.0.0 from 7.x.x within a week of each other. They appear to be very similar as far as the changes go, but a few things have us very disturbed. First, battery life has been significantly reduced since the upgrade on both devices. Mine got a new battery installed by Samsung in February, so it is not an age problem. Another issue is the widget we both used to force stop background/unresponsive programs is now gone and nothing is available to replace it. This is a major issue as any time an unresponsive app happens the only way to clear it is to reboot the phone. We both were the habit of stopping BG apps and I think this may be contributing to battery drain. A few, like the SiriusXM app, never shut down completely without being force stopped. Then there is the issue with sharing content. When clicking the Share button for anything the menu that comes up never has the various app icons in the same place. Since the FB, Messenger and now Text icons are all blue and very similar this often results in clicking the wrong one because your mind remembers where you clicked last and muscle memory kicks in. Anyone else seeing issues with this latest update?

Not sure what that would accomplish as I already have the update. I'm trying to find out if anyone else has seen these or other issues with the OTA version of 8.0.0 pushed out by AT$T. Last I remember, Odin was for putting alternative ROMs on rooted devices.
These are some pretty specific issues and I don't perform the activities you do, so I can't comment. For "Sharing", the icons are what they are, just pick carefully.

Just odd that the icons would rearrange every time you hit Share. Does it even when used within seconds of the last time I hit Share.
