Meenova do this too - but smaller & better
Agree on the meenova solution, plus it comes with a micro USB to full USB adapter to be able to plug in a full size stick right into the phone.

My mistake here. I looked again and the adapter is micro usb that plugs into the phone with a exposed USB A. A lot like this:

I got a Iball hybrid pen drive. Great for storing all movies and music.

micro usb on the other end and a full size usb on the other, a microsd slot fits on the mouth of the full usb head.

Now that JB is out for the One X I want to get a USB OTG cable.
Can anyone who has one tested and working for plugging into an external hard drive (a 1tb externally powered Toshiba drive) post a link in the UK of where to get one? This will enable me to transfer files, photos and videos etc from the hard drive quickly / easily.
Ideally from amazon or someone like that - I don't fancy guessing which ones will work etc, it would be great to only buy one!
Many thanks in advance
i couldn't connect it external hard drive ( i think hard drive needs more Electricity ) but it works with flash memories fine
I think an OTG cable is an OTG cable... I just tried the one that came with my USB keyboard folio case I use with my Nexus 7, which works fine with the HOX now its updated to the new HBoot/kernel.

true, any otg cable should work if it's really otg, however you should get a usb powered one for a hard drive if the hard drive does not have a y split cable.

I'm using a standard usb otg cable from amazon. I have an external powered hdd(2gb)(I believe it must be self powered anyways) and using the app called usb otg helper to make ntfs work with android.

Ahh - thank you!!
I have a Bytestor 4gb FAT32 stick that works fine with no extra power etc, but I tried my 1TB external powered hard drive and it failed
I only just realised it is NTFS to avoid the 4gb limit for files for videos etc.
So if I install USB OTG Helper I can use NTFS? Nice - that needs Root though - how can you use NTFS drives if you are not-rooted and stock JB?
oh, and I just got one of the standard USB OTB cables off Amazon for £3 and it worked fine. As others said, just buy any of them they probably work fine!

I just use a regular OTG cable.
bought cable from eBay and seems its working fine, the only problem is that if i connect usb flash with files on it sometimes it deletes most of files. that happened with my cars USB flash, i tried to connect it to manage some music but it deleted about 3GB of 4GB music...
can anybody tell me why is this happening?
Is there anyway to directly hook up a USB drive to the phone to transfer data? I know you would need a micro USB adapter but is it possible?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
Yes you can and more!
What you want/need is called and OTG cable (On The Go). It has a micro USB male to plug into the bottom of your phone and a female USB connector for a flash drive on the other end. I've used it on my GS3 with Wicked 10 and it pops right up!
Also tried it on a stock Sprint GS3 and a couple of Verizon Note IIs. Cables are fairly cheap - got mine on Amazon. If you'd like the link I can send it to you or respond here.
If you're looking to connect an external drive, I haven't tried that - the phone might not have enough power to spin it up.
Hope this helps!

I cut off the micro usb end of a usb cable and striped the wires. I would like to solder them to a sd card adapter for a micro sd card. i cant get a clear answer from google about which wires get soldered to which pins. Any suggestions, would this even work?
Umm... How about a USB OTG cable with a USB-MicroSD adapter? Seems easier to me

it would be easier but i want to wrap it around the back and be flat as possible.
Get a USB OTG cable that comes out sideways and fold it behind with a micro-sd adapter

I have the Samsung galaxy tab s 10.5 and I would like to know if a 256g flash drive will work? I watch movies and TV shows on the go, 64g is not enough (the Simpsons season 1 - 25 needs about 100g) I don't have a computer anymore just my tablet. I bought the seagate wireless plus 1tb and I couldn't get it to work, don't want to order a 256g flash drive and have same trouble. Any help would be great
Sorry no I am not rooted and due to the fact that I use my Samsung allshare cast hub daily and root items can't use the hub
Anyone?
Don't you mean SD card.? Some people say the highest you can go is 64 or 128gb
128 GB is the highest you can go

He probably means OTG cable with a hard drive. Simple drives tend to work the larger drives need more power to work via USB.
Sent from my SM-N910P
There is an available of cable that's a "y".....one leg is the USB and the other is another female micro USB for your charging cable. Can't remember where on ebay I got mine but it does work for my external hard drives with my GS5
128gb sd card is not big enough so I thought k would try a 256gb OTG flash drive. Has anyone tested?

This question left me extremely curious, so I have just purchased an OTG cable which will arrive in a few days. I will test out a few different EXT HDD sizes and post what the maximum my OTG will allow.
I do however forsee an increase in the discharge of the battery for larger storage devices, but we shall see.
Can't wait to see what u find
I'm gonna buy a sandisk ultra 64gb microUSB otg and I was looking for a bigger one but this must be the biggest one they have, can't wait to test it out. What I'll do is if my shows or movies won't fit I'm gonna have to erase the ones I've seen then try to make them fit. I suggest you get a 128gb micro SD card plus a big sized flash drive then you should be okay.

So I bought an OTG cable off ebay, and it arrived. I didn't change the format of any of my external drives as I don't have the space to store anything currently anywhere else. The tablet registers there is a drive connected however it can't mount the storage device due to an unknown format. The externals I tried were 2 portables (1x 500Gb usb2.0 and 1x 1Tb usb 3.0) and 2 desktops (1x 1.5Tb and 1x 1Tb both usb 2.0). Over the next few days I will attempt to reformat the 500 Gb and 1Tb portables, and the 1Tb desktop and see if that produces any results. Due to work constraints this may take a few days, so thank you for patience. Results will be posted as soon as possible. Current format of all the externals is default NTFS.
Another Option
There's another option in which would require multiple devices unfortunately due to the limited storage. Its a product I currently use myself called "Toshiba Duo 2 in 1.
http://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/...flash-drive-toduo64grd?searchTerm=Toshina Duo
Unfortunately I am still working on my other drives. There's is a lot of moving data around (limited to USB 2.0 speeds), so please keep posted on my other externals.
Is it possible on stock device? I have tried all my tricks, no luck so far. Thanks for any idea on how to make it work.

Using the usbc adapter. I have also tried fat32, the otg device is still not detected. I have tried stick mount but that fc instantly when I select mount.

Something wrong with your port? It works fine for me with the included adapter. Suggest you try on a store display model for comparison.

How it respond when u put it in?
All right. I am getting somewhere I think. Otg does work with the usbc to usb adapter (the big one). It's some long setup here as I have a microsdcard enclosure plugged into regular usb adapter (for pc) and now this usbc to usb adapter. But it works! However, the c to micro usb adapter (the small one) doesn't work unfortunately.

I was testing this today, trying to connect a USB memory stick, and it didn't work with the USB on the Go adapter
Note 7 might need something different to be compatible with USB sticks
Mine worked no problem. With USB to USB-c adapter I plugged in a USB stick and it came up instantly. I even have a 6 in one card adapter that's USB I put I an SD card plugged it in and it came right up. Now the USB-C to micro USB adapter is not OTG certified I had to by one off Amazon that was so I could use my seek thermal camera that is a micro USB camera. With the Samsung provided adapter it will not work.
Well I know last time i tested mine it work fine then I picked it up in a safe location just in case I need it and used the one I bought on ebay call Rankie. Imo it could be a bad port as mention, could be a bad adapter, or something else. I have not tested it with my microsd card adapter to the usb adapter....
Fyi...plug device into the connector first then plug the connector with device attached to the phone.
