[Q] Is this a light bleed problem? - G Pad 8.3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just got my LG G Pad (GPE) yesterday. At normal operating brightness levels in daylight, it looks just fine. However, last night I was watching a movie in a dimly lit environment and had the brightness down a tad more. I noticed some odd pattern on the right side of my screen when in landscape mode. It happened only when there was a light or white background. I snapped a photo of it. Can anyone tell me if this is normal for the G Pad? Maybe I just have to keep the brightness up a tad more? Or should I return it for a new one?

I contacted Google. Once I sent them this photo, they said it was pretty abnormal so requested I send it back. Fortunately, they have a cool return policy where they send me the replacement before you send your defective one back, so I won't be without a tablet for a few days.

I have the exact same issue on mine, not too bothered with the issue. Did the replacement one has the same problem?

I'm not sure yet. It will be here on Monday. I'll post a response when I get it to see if its better.

Lighter vertical line of pixels in landscape

Hello everyone, today I've noticed that on landscape mode my GN has a lighter and brighter vertical line of pixels on the left side, if I turn the phone on the left; if I turn the phone on the right it doesn't happen and everything is fine on both sides. It is really annoying me and I can't say if it is the first time it happens or this kind of issue has been always there. It can be noticed only with white or light backgrounds and in EVERY photo, if brightness is switched to max it is hard to see but with automatic or half brightness is pretty clear.
I tried to screenshot it but I'm afraid this is something hardware since it doesn't show on screenshot.
Anyone else with the same problem?

Is it green? I have a similar issue. I think it's a case of screen burn.

I think I have the same issue. Don't know if I should go and get a replacement. It also only shows on white background while browsing.
EDIT: The captured screenshot doesn't show this, so no point in uploading it.

Took it to assistance. It'll be back in 10 working days and since I don't have something not even similar to replace it I'm stuck with an old Sony Ericsson W205...what a nightmare!

At least you can replace it. I am from Israel and I bought the Gnex in the US directly from Google. I noticed this problem a day before I went on the flight so I didnt have much time to replace it. But it doesnt much bother me. I know that those Super AMOLED screen have too much problems... Just live with it right now.
i have the same issue right now.
For replacing the GNex i had to go in a samsung point or they come to my home for took it?

I have the exact same issue on my Galaxy Nexus. The same row of pixels (along the top-edge). It's not visible in portrait mode because the notification bar is black and the pixels are switched off.
Here's the kicker: since this afternoon, the row of pixels are switched on even when the background is black. They appear as a faint line and become brighter when there's a background image. I put the phone under a magnifying glass and there appear to be three such rows, not one. It could be the pentile matrix playing with my eyes since the pixels are too small to see even with a (low power) magnifying glass, but there's definitely more than one row.
Anyone else?

Can you post or link a picture? I mean under a magnifying glass, just to see how it looks like...ehm not sure if it is possible though
I am having the same problem on mine too. There are these streaks that runs across in landscape or portrait. it's more noticable in a grayish white background. It's very easy to see with a screen test app that shows one color on the whole screen. Lately, I also notice the very top and bottom line of pixels like would lit up brighter. For example, when i touch the context buttons at the bottom, bottom pixels of the buttom would lit up bright white.
Edit: clariification, it's the same lines of streaks if held in portrait, it would go across. when in landscape, the same streaks goes to to bottom.
I also have a lighter vertical line of pixels on the side of the screen when in landscape. The interesting thing, though, is that it is on the left, regardless of whether my phone is in landscape with the power button on the top or the button. either way it's on the left of the picture. So I don't think it's a hardware issue. More likely a calibration issue?
I also have horizontal banding of slightly different shades in portrait on grey/white backgrounds (eg: facebook app). These become harder to see the more brightness I turn up.
Yep, have it too...
Now I'm deciding whether to go to the Service Center....
Other than that small line, the phone is perfect so i guess i won't bother..

I got the entire screen replaced by Samsung Italy. 100% hardware issue
i have the same issue... but i think it is not "burn in", it is just a pixel line brighter than the rest, in my case it shows all the colors as it should, just brighter.
Strange...
A couple of weeks ago I noticed the topmost line of pixels of my Gnex is miscoloured or brighter than normal, and yet sometimes displays correctly, usually when black.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium HD app
I noticed it's on the bottom too. Maybe some backlight problem or something... But sometimes it changes colour due to shades changing, it's like in half shades it's shining more and in other half it's darker. Like some software compensating. There's other colours, but blue looks differently.

What to do, blue line & bleeding?

I received my G Pad yesterday, I noticed I have the blue line and some slight bleeding in the lower left of the screen. My whites are nice. Has anyone returned a defective one and received a replacement with no issues. Debating if I should deal with it or try again?

A picture would be nice. I didn't had the blue line on 3 of my white devices. But I think the 4th one has it. But not so obviously. It's more like a transparent line, that's a little bit brighter. Only seeing it from a really low angle. Not the front view.
On the bleeding, it depense. My device is from germany and almost everyone has it. And we think it's normal.
Reading here on XDA, people returned the devices with light bleeding. Saying it was defect. But only a really low % doesn't have light bleeding.

I would expect most G Pads to have the tiny little blue line and possibly some minor light bleed at very low light levels. Personally, I don't know why either of these would interfere with use of the tablet in normal situations. I would recommend that people who are contemplating buying a G Pad just assume that they will have these issues. If you happen to get one that doesn't have the blue line or some low-level light bleed, be happy.
Otherwise, the best bet is not to buy one if you're going to be haunted by these facts. That will free up a lot of time in the forums discussing this.

Can you install the back light bleed test app from the play store and snap a photo? I'm curious how bad it gets.

It really depends on you and what you consider acceptable. My first G Pad I took back for what I considered excessive light bleed in the top corners of the screen it also had the blue line. My 2nd one has next to no light bleed and also does not suffer from the low brightness level light bleed like some have. My 2nd one does have the blue line but to me that is not an issue I have seen it only a few times and only when using the video app watching a movie for over 30 minutes. During normal use I have never seen the blue line when I say normal use I mean pick it up for a quick check of mail, surf the web a bit watch a YouTube video or two and play a gave for a few minutes.
On my side no blue line so far, but i've got the light bleed on the bottom edge at low brightness.
Seeing so much people here sending back there tablets and receiving it with another issue, I've decided to contact LG customer care (French one). At first they asked me to send a picture off the defect, which I did... And here is the response:
We acknowledge receipt of your mail 12/23/2013.
You contact us because you found a defect in the slab on your tablet when the brightness is low.
Please note that this is not a defect but a normal phenomenon when the brightness is at minimum.
We remain at your disposal for any further request.

I'm not really happy with this answer. My first reaction was to root the device, install a custom recovery and flash the device with a descent ROM (CMB actually). I'm felling better now, since I can live with this... but IMHO it's still not "a normal phenomenon"
Cheers.

The screen

I actually bought it from a store and sent it to my friend in INDIA he seems to have a dim display one,the bit on the reddish side. Now,he isn't enjoying his new mobile because of the forum about screens being on a warmer side. Please help me out how to adjust the contrast. If at all I can do something from here to help him out because sending the mobile back here would be pain in the arse.
I dont if it will solve his problem but settiings/general/accessibility/color adjustment there is a dial you can move around to adjust to your liking. As far as being dim, ive heard others say the same thing. I keep on my 35%. Anything above 70% and i need to wear sunglasses lol
He was actually using his mobile at 0% brightness and thats what have him a red tint of he increases his brightness to 40% or 50% He has no issues about this. I showed him the picture comparison of two G3 s. He said that the left one is exactly what it looks like at 10% brightness and right one about 60%-70%. I guess the photo in the forum was fake. He has no issues now.

At 0% brightness, my g3 has reddish whites or a slight purple cast. You cannot notice it at all unless you are under the perfect conditions. Plus you need another device or phone to compare. But my g3 has whiter whites than all the phones I have seen. Even the s5.

Screen slightly flickers when WHITE face is displayed

Has anyone worn a bright white face here yet using WM? Every time I set a bright white face, the screen flickers a little when dim mode is active. It is so hard to see it but it's definitely there. I have troubleshot for 12+ hours and have determined that it just can't be a hardware issue because any other bright face is fine and in normal/non-dim mode, everything is perfect! Plus, when I use a chronograph with bright white dials, the flicker isn't there at all. I know one thing: I'm NOT RMA'ing this thing until the 11th month OR if ti fails, lol. Thanks in advance for your input!
Yes, I have seen this too. It only happens with a white face in dim mode.
I don't think it's a big deal as I am not sure that we should be using a white face in dim mode, as it "could" cause burn in (but not sure about that).
I have the same thing on my watch. I tought it was my Android phone at first so I did a factory reset on the watch and tried it on an iPhone 6 running iOS 9 and still saw this issue.
You can clearly see the flickering on Catchcat watchface app. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=dd.watchdesigner.catchcat
It's really annoying and I'm hoping there's a software fix so I don't have to return my watch.
Would this also happen on the moto 360 2nd Gen? I know the screen is not AMOLED...
Thanks guys, I was starting to think it was me since no one else saw it when I posted on G+! I'm hoping it is a software issue at this point.
Hey Jeff! Just chiming in here. Like you, I do change up my faces and have tried to troubleshoot and replicate the flicker. I think my eyes are going so I don't really notice it. Did you try using the animation boost in Watchmaker to see if that does anything? I personally think it's a refresh issue, because of the res of the Huatch, it can't handle it when going into dimmed mode. Just thinkin out loud lol.

Hey, long time to hear I definitely misunderstood you on that one...I thought you meant the bright>dim animation transitions, which I don't use. I actually didn't try the animation boost yet under settings, will try that! For the record, I still find this to be my favorite smartwatch:good:

The Moto 360 2 has a very "dim" ambient mode so no, it definitely will not flicker but who cares when you can't even see it, LOL. Please let us know if you decide to return it and/or contact Huawei about this.
There is one solution that works quite well.
Place a solid black circle on the top layer (actually below the hands layer).
Make the layer dimmed only.
Use opacity to suit eg 60%.
When watch goes to dim or wakes up from dim, the flicker will be much less noticeable.

Nice to see you here too The flicker only occurs when a white face is sitting in dim mode. (not the transition) What's really odd is the fact I can still see the flicker after adding a circle at 80% opacity in dim only...weird issue. (almost like it cant handle any whites in dim mode/low power mode) As I mentioned on Google+ it's not a big deal, I never wear white faces. (was just testing them) Thanks anyway!

Great, it works :good:
Great. Thanks for feedback. Cheers
My watch also flickers but only in sunlight. If I'm somewhere indoors I can barely see it but its definitely there. It also happens with black watchfaces and white numbers. Anyone with the same problem?
I know this is old post, but mine also does that. Black face with white numbers and hands. It flickers only when outside in sunlight.
So what's the solution? I modify my watchmaker face to put a black circle with an opacity on top of everything?
Again, sorry for raising a dead thread, but these are my thoughts:
I think the hwatch is just lowering the refresh rate of the screen in dim mode as to preserve battery life. Instead of running at 60hz it's probably clocking down to 30hz or something of that nature.
Just a guess.
My Huawei Watch slightly flickers when activate the dimmed mode. Only in faces with clear backgrounds
pretty sure some talanted dev can just look into the kernel/settings because its just a refresh rate setting.
I think its absolutely normal unless its literally flickering right infront of your eyes all the time...it depends when your eyes catches the screen (on a white background ) the level of degree you see it. Im sure it flickers but our eyes cant see it
Sent from my SM-N920T using Tapatalk
My watch has the same thing but you can see the flicker really good when using a white watchface in dim mode.
So this is "normal" and i don't have to RMA it?
Check flickering under normal light. Outside. Mike
Great "fix"

yellowish tint/tone on screen, known issue or?

Well, this frustrates me a lot,I'm just uploading video so you can see and compare to some cheap other chinese phone.
I'm noticing yellow tone all over screen, kinda like there is a night filter on with very low bright nightlight settings.
I increased brightness all the way to 100 % didn't help.
I also removed plastic cover from phone, nothing, still present.
I even switched to Vivid display settings before that and reduced RGB (R channel all the way,G to middle and Blue increased all the way) and set tone color to cooler slider all the way,no difference.
So,since I purchased using phone,is this some software bug/issue or I got faulty screen (maybe some kind of damage from sunburn),or this is just how this display work?
I'm uploading video and will post link soon...
So anyone else having same issue, and what to do,be sure I can not RMA the phone since I purchased it used.
I'm also anxious that the screen might die on me soon.
But this yellow tone frustrates me a lot, colors are not accurate at all because of it.
does it show in safe mode? what happens after reboot, goes away and come back later or...?

Hmm,why would I want to access safe mode,I don't have issues with phone except bad wifi and this issue.Mostly it's noticeable while watching vids (youube),look here if you can see the difference...but maybe it is suppose to be like that.
I set color mode all the way to cool tone and no difference to my eye.
I called a friend on a drink which has N10+ too, then we put 4k Nature video on each of the phones at same time and same screen lightning intensity.
No diference,between them...so now I'm confused totally.
Are my eyes cheating on me,is it possible that there is slight yellow tint (like light night light filter) or something is wrong with my eyes?
Is it possible that maybe screen adapts it self based on ambient light so I'm seeing yellowish tone...who knows, but I do trust my eyes, though picture was the same color accuracy on both phones...
I'm totally confused now...
I have currently 2 note 10+ phones. One which still has the original display while on the 2nd I installed a new display with frame. Comparing both these phones now, the older display - about 1.5 years old with light screen burn on the bottom is more yellow than the new one. The new one is very white compared to the old one. Maybe your display is showing its age?
damn...it was a damn mask/cover with yellow tint over it,not display...how was I stupid.
Some weird posts here, didn't you say you removed the film earlier ?
