Honestly, since your sd card was formatted and you've already lost everything I would just use LGNPST back to stock. Here is a link to @engine95's thread for rooting/unlocking here. You will see the link for lgnpst and teenybins. You will need to use irc and go to the #lg-optimus-g channel to get the download links for it. Once you enter the irc channel, at the very top you will see "You won't read this but..." followed by a link. Click that link and you will find everything you could possibly need. Some people(depending on version of Windows) have problems with LGNPST and the LG drivers, so in the links you will find a vmware image with LGNPST already set up. And instead of using a teenybin, just use the most recent full stock bin. All the directions, files, etc will be right there after following that link in the irc. If you dont have vmware workstation just google it - you can get a free fully functional copy from their website for a month - as well as how to set it up using an existing virtual image. Once set up, just follow the directions in the irc links for download mode and LGNPST. Doing this will essentially put your phone back to stock factory settings, so you will have to reroot and unlock the bootloader again once it's done - but at least you will have a functioning phone again.
It may seem complicated at first but I had to do this once and it was pretty easy. The vmware image will already have the proper drivers installed and will lead to less troubleshooting/problems. But make sure you use vmware workstation NOT oracle virtualbox. Virtualbox had usb issues with LGNPST and I never got the vmware image to work properly - vmware workstation worked like a charm. Hope this helps!
EDIT: And if you have a nandroid backup saved to your pc, after rooting/unlocking again - as long as you are using the same recovery you can move the nandroid from your pc back to your phone and restore it. If not, make sure you not only make a backup this time but save a copy to your pc in case anything like this happens again.
I think i got into irc?? But i dont see what your talking about.

The address is webchat.freenode.irc from a web browser. Then pick a nickname, and for channel type '#lg-optimus-g" without quotations, leave both check boxes blank, fill out the the captcha and hit connect. As soon as you connect you will see links at the top of the channel. Click the link after "Need Help? You won't read this but..." and that's all the links you will need. If you do need further help, simply ask someone in the irc channel. Sorry I just got back to you, Ive been super busy.
EDIT: On second thought, here is the link in the irc with all the guides you will need. Get the stock zvc .bin file from engine's thread that I linked to earlier and grab the vmware image from the link in this edit. You could use the stock zvb bin found in the link above but then you will have to update to zvc, easier to just use the one engine has in his guide.
Have you ever put your phone into download mode? Its simple, once you download vmware workstation, the vmware image, the stock bin and get it all set up - make sure your phone is completely powered down. Plug the usb into your pc, but before connecting the other end to your phone hold both volume buttons in, then connect it. Your phone should turn on and be in download mode. Then you are ready to use LGNPST and flash the stock bin. If you need the .dll file in LGNPST that can also be found in the link I just gave you but I think the vmware image may have it already installed? Can't remember, just make sure you are using ls970/sprint or whatever.
So i run the auto lgnpat and it installs the drivers for download mode and registers the dll. then when i try to run the regular lgnpst program it says failed to load dll skin ? Sorry im such a noob guys thanks

Vmware workstation is virtualization software. Vmware wont help you by itself. It runs operating systems from within other operating systems. If you are on windows and want to run mac osx or linux(or even android), thats what vmware does. In the links from irc you will see a vmware image with lgnpst already set up. So you run that image in workstation and it will boot into a windows xp build with lgnpst and drivers already set up EXACTLY as they should be. Make sense?
If it's too difficult you can just try setting lgnpst up on your current pc, the irc links have guides for everything. Personally I think it was much easier to just load the virtual image in workstation because its configured exactly as it should be.
The goal is to run LGNPST - it's LG's flashing tool which is why we cant link directly to it.
EDIT: Didnt see your and engine's other replies, just the notification I had for this one - if you already have lgnpst, follow his directions for the fix, dont worry about vmware - unless you cant get lgnpst to work. Then try running lgnpst from the vmware image.
That makes sense but the file i downlaoded from irc says its not supported by vm ill do some more digging tho

It might depend on how you are using it. If you just tried to open it with vm it wont, you have to set up vm using an existing vm file. Google for instructions, again its simple and takes just a few steps to set up.

Not necessarily.
1.What version of Windows are you running?
2.Can you move files to and from your SD? Just regular old files.
3.Do you have ADB installed?
Answer those questions first and we'll go from there.

Greetings fellow GNex owners and enthusiasts!
I've been trying to root my Galaxy Nexus unsuccessfully for the past week.
Here's what I've done so far:
1. I Unlocked the bootloader as per Droid-Life's instructions using an old method with the cmd prompt. (The complete How-To guide on their website) I installed the SDK on a windows 7 64-bit machine and went ahead with the process. This worked fine.
(*Note: My Gnex is stuck on 4.0.2 and it won't pull an update. I've tried the method of clearing the data from the framework app and resetting the clock to 1969 multiple times without success. probably 10-15 times.)
2. Since that I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling drivers, rebooting, and then rebooting some more. I've tried every available "noob-proof" method out there and i can't get it to work.
Tried Galaxy Nexus Tooklit v5.6
With and without the included drivers. tons of reboots and re-tries. root always fails.
Wugfresh's Toolkit 1.3
with and without the included drivers. tons of reboots and re-tries. root always fails.
Manually pushing CWM Recovery and SU to the phone with cmd promt via other tutorials floating around the internet, etc. Pushing CWM Recovery fails. Can't even get the temporary flash going to install SU
NOTHING works.
Is it because I unlocked the bootloader manually using an older method first?? I'm pretty sure I've been following the various instructions with each method accurately.
Can someone shed some light on me? I don't necessarily want to mess with kernels and custom ROMs. I just want to be able to wirelessly tether like I could with my OG and D2.
Thanks in advance,
Thanassi
Check my sig and try my method?
Haha.
But I'm guessing driver error.
The simplest method for getting drivers is to download and install pdanet on your PC. Then simply try again.
http://junefabrics.com/android/
I've had to root my phone 3 times and each time took 3 tries before it took. As mentioned before also make sure your drivers are good. And su files.
bow chicka wow wow.

TADA!! You're rooted, and you can flash stock 4.0.4 (And root it, at the same time ^^)

I'm a noob too.
I followed the following method:
http://galaxynexusroot.com/galaxy-nexus-root/how-to-root-galaxy-nexus/
After Step 6 when I went to step 7 I was unable to see "Android ADB Interface", so I re-installed the drivers and repeated step 6. It worked and the rest of the steps went like Clockwork.
See if this method works.

As I am most likely NOT going to watch this video; Does it contain any Rundll32 commands?
If not, then the tutorial can't be all that good...
Because you need to tell Windows, that it should NOT always search Windows Update, for drivers. They're mostly crap, to be as nice, as I can...

Yes. You don't need the SDK, as a matter of fact
The Rundll32 part, is a fact, when installing the drivers...
It has the following effect:
You have installed ADB drivers (no Rundll32). You are flashing away, and all of a sudden. BANG! Everything stoppen. Phone's bricked... Why? Windows thought it is being smart, and installed new drivers, whilst you were working. However, with the RunDll32 command, you can tell Windows, that YOU want to install the drivers manually, and check manually. Of course, you can turn this off, if you want. No prob. but I personally recommend leaving it off
It's saved many phones' lives ^^
so you are having trouble with the adb or fastboot drivers? is so i had this problem too and sometimes even have to reinstall those drivers after flashing a rom.
i had to manually install the drivers using device manager, just select the android device and go to update driver. Choose "Browse my computer for driver software" then pick "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer" then choose Google in that list.
Error

Thanks for all your responses and suggestions. I finally got something to work. After some more driver swapping and rebooting, now on an XP machine, I got wugfresh's toolkit 1.3 to flash cwm recovery and I was able to install su. The program then ran an automated script to allow permanent flashing of cwm recovery. Got my titanium backup and from manager back, as well as wireless tether. Thank you all for your attention and patience!
Had such a hard time with this phone that I was beginning to have buyers remorse. Now its been set free.

Hang on... Did you install the scnd. file, within the ISO? If not, there's your problem...
So I have searched the web and have not found very much useful help.
I rooted my Optimus G LS970 and did a little house keeping and uninstalling some apps that I didn't use. One of the ones I uninstalled was Google Play Movies, and now when I reboot my phone, it does not boot and says "Security Error." After some digging on the web, I have found that this is because Google Play Movies has some DRM stuff in it that the phone checks for when it boots, and if it is not there, it fails the security test, and does not boot.
After searching the web, I have found that the only way to fix this is to reset the phone to stock, since I cant sideload the Google Play Movies apk because the phone won't boot. So my question is, how do I reset my phone to stock?
I have tried this tutorial here: www DOT androidegis DOT com/how-to/how-to-unbrick-lg-optimus-g-fix-bootloopsecurity-issues/
but the app from step #1 downloads a .cab file, not a .kdz, so it is useless. I have also attempted to use LGNPST, but I have no clue how to use it, and I have found no useful tutorial.
If anyone has a fix/tutorial that works, please let me know.
you can flash the cab file with lgnpst.
Put your phone into download mode (press and hold both volume buttons and connect usb cable)
run lgnpst(you may only access emergency tab)
select dll (LGNPST_LS970.dll)
select cab file
start
Sent from my LG-LS970 using xda app-developers app
First, under the Emergency tab, I am guessing that I use the Emergency option, not the Phonebook Recovery option?
And second, Where is this LGNPST_LS970.dll that you speak of? The only one that I can select is LGNPST_Utility_2.dll from my LG driver (the dll in the .cab file that I downloaded is called LS970_WD.dll).
Am I doing something wrong?
You'll need to download it from the irc. Not exactly sure why its not openly available. Lgnpst is copyrighted, but .bin and .dll, i would think, would be available. Download Phantoms zip. Instructions are included.

I got my problem solved, thanks to Shelnutt2 and xboxfanj on the IRC, as well as drancid.
So to recap for any other people who have this issue, here are the steps that I took to solve my problem:
If you haven't done so already, install the latest version of the LG drivers.
Download and install the latest version of LGNPST from the IRC (link in javskies post, once logged in, instructions are at the very top)
Download the latest firmware for your device from the IRC (as of now it is version 7, once installed, there is an OTA update to version 8)
Put your phone in download mode by holding both the volume up and down buttons simultaneously while pressing the power button.
Connect your phone to your computer and launch LGNPST.
Under the Emergency tab, do an emergency restore (not phonebook) and use LGNPST_LS970.dll as your .dll and the .cab file you downloaded from step 3 as your .bin file
Press start and wait for the process to finish.
*Note: Your phone should reboot at about 67%, and then jump to 85% after the applications finish optimizing. At this point is is OK to stop the restore and disconnect your phone.
At this point, I had a you should have a working phone with all of you apps, contacts, data, etc. intact as the restore resets the system partition and not the sd card (well, what would be the sd card). You will have to re-root, and once you do, I recommend checking out Project FreeGee. There is an app for it in the Play Store that costs $1 (The money supports the devs) that unlocks your boot loader, installs your choice of CWM or TWRP, and also disables the LG Security Check (the entire reason you are reading this).
If you need any help, join the IRC and they will be glad to help you.

I beleive the issues is the same I am having. How do you find the dll for the LS970 and then put in the system so that when you look for it on the LGNPST program it shows. It only shows the Utility5 one.

I think the dll is dependent on if you have the phone drivers installed on your computer. make sure you install those first and then try it.
LG Optumus G (SPRINT) Fails to Boot, "Security Error"
need help with getting phone working if anyone has the time it is gratefully appreciated
I have a new method how too flash your bricked phone back to factory stock or too flash any stock firmware . This flash is the LG Official firmware. This flash will wipe out everything and correctly flash prl, stock recovery, all partition. So let the get the ball rolling and lets hopefully get your phone back too fully working. Please follow all steps no short cutting, or altering files may cause issues with hardware and software too your phone. Please make sure you can get your phone in download mode before doing anything else.If your Sprint LS970 can get into download mode . This method will fix any bricked issues and also can use too flash any of the LS970 firmware versions .
Directions - Please read them carefully
1. Please make sure you have your LG Drivers installed before you start this process
2. Please download this file from this link provided http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23159073880933271
3. When the download is complete. Please open the zip folder and you will see a folder inside the zip called LG. take the LG folder and move it too C: drive
4. Please have at least 60 percent battery or more and put the phone in download mode. too get the phone in download mode. Make sure your phone is completely off. once you have done that . Hold both volume buttons together and plug usb cord and then when you see download mode you can release the volume button and now you are in download mode.
5. Now go too your device manager and look for your com ports and find your LGE Android USB Serial Port. Now double click it and look for advance and then click it. now we have too change the com port too 41. when you are done press ok and close it out.
6. Unplug your usb connection from phone and leave phone in download mode.
7. Now open your windows explorer go to C:\LG\LGFLASHTOOL and look for the filename LGFLASHTOOL and right click it and run as admin.
8. The program will open up. Now we need too program the LG Flashtool Software with Official LG DLL and Firmware and Comm Port
9. Go to port settings in the LG FlashTool program and select port 1 only. and please ok
10. now we need too go too model settings in LG FlashTool and we need too select dll starting with LGLS970. and select tot or bin files that shows your phone model. I know it will show that we show the tot or bin file and dll already setup. But we too remove them and re add them. So do that now by choosing manual mode. and then select your LGLS970.dll and tot or bin and please ok when done.
11. Now we are ready too flash the phone.
12. too start the flash you will press the arrow on the top left side of LG FlashTool and when the box shows ready, just plug your usb cord into the phone and the phone will start flashing . Once it has started the process don't let your pc go into sleep mode and don't unplug the phone during the flashing process. once the flash is done the phone will reboot and perform a factory reset and when that is done . the phone will reboot fully too hand free activation. at that point you can unplug the phone from usb and close out the lg flashtool.
13. Good Luck and hope this guide will help you and please show me so love and click the thanks button or donate too me button. too help with LG Unbrick Project
P.S. please follow the pictures too match the directions and don't change or shortcut things.

Ever since this phone came out, we've been using LGNPST. It's kind of a pain to get, but once you get it and setup, seems pretty easy to use.
This LGFlashTool has been mentioned off and on for other purposes/uses, but never (that I can remember) used for flashing phones to Factory.
Reading your Guide, LGFlashTool does seem to be more thorough, as it seems to wipe EVERYTHING, and you end up starting from scratch. ie Hands free activation proves that.
I think I just answered my own question. LGNPST is easy for the masses. Whereas LGFlashtool is better for REALLY wiping/cleaning up the phone. Almost more for shop work. If that makes sense.
Please don't take this wrong, I'm not being mean. I was just curious about it's use. And I just figured it out as I wrote this.
It's great to have another option. And nice writeup. Thanks

I just inherited a t-mobile phone that was rooted. I installed the latest version of TWRP and tried to re-root it but now it's in a boot loop and on top of that I can't connect the phone to a computer b/c I get the "USB Device Not Recognized" message. I've re-installed the drivers and I've tried the toothpick trick. Nothing is working. What are my options?

First, I believe this is the correct section - the phone I am working with is a T-Mobile Galaxy S II... Second, I can't Odin because I don't have a working usb connection. I've tried several different ROMS from this fine section and I get the same result... Boot Loop
If you flashed TWRP 2.6.3, that's your problem.
Flash 2.6.1
This is the wrong section because it has nothing to do with ROM development.
With that being said if you can still boot into twrp you still have hope. Try loading a different ROM into an SD card using a converter and slide back in the phone to properly wipe first then re flash.
I don't understand why you can't get a proper USB connection going but above suggestion may solve it.

You could always get a SD card reader, connect t to ur PC, DL a flashable twrp 2.6.1.0 and flash the recovery, then flash a ROM an u should be back in action, but above mentioned is right this is the wrong forum u need q&a

Just to confirm a few things: where do you not have the working USB connection? in download mode? If so, I'd try reinstalling the drivers.
Also, I see in your sig that you state your phones are:
Asus Nexus 7
Sprint Galaxy Note 2
Neither of which is a SGH-T989. Are you sure you are flashing the correct ROM/Kernel for your device?
also you said it came rooted but you re-rooted it. What process did you use to re-root it?
One last thing: you say you got it second hand, are you sure it is a T-Mobile galaxy S 2? May want to check under the battery for a "T989" or "i9100". The i9100 is NOT a T-Mobile galaxy S 2. It should be SGH-T989 if they didn't give you incorect info about the phone.
You could also try a different USB cable or hub. I've had USB extension cables give me grief and the front ports on my PC don't like my phone.

I think there is something wrong with the micro USB input on the phone. I have reinstalled the drivers several times. I have tried different cables and different computers. I even tried the toothpick trick. No luck.
I do have a GN2. The SG2 is for my daughter...
It is a genuine SGH-T989 I checked under the battery.

If u go to the dev section on this phone and look around a bit, u will find the twrp thread, in that thread is a flashabke copy of 2.6.1.0, if u can't find it pm me, I have a copy, all u would need to do is put the zip file on any micro SD card then put it in the phone and flash it with the twrp u have now, it will revert it back to 2.6.1.0 and that should fix ur prob, but like I said of u can't find it pm me and I'll shoot u a copy

Let it sit on the TeamWin screen for a minute or so... I find it sometimes takes a little bit.
If it doesn't ever get past there, try hooking it up to a PC and see if you can get ADB to load (presuming you have ADB installed and ADB drivers installed). If you can, try to do an "adb pull /proc/last_kmsg" and a "adb logcat > logcat.txt" and zip those up and toss them on here.
If you CAN'T get into adb, I would try hooking the phone up to Kies and see if it will do anything for you.
Or you could try following this guide as you have the T-Mobile SGH-T989 (not the Telus SGH-T989D):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1513359
BUT make sure to grab the correct stock image file for whatever version your android currently is (ie if you are on Android 2.3.6, then make sure to get the T-mobile KL1 2.3.6 stock image).
Also, what ROM did you flash? was it a 4.3 ROM? If so, did you update your radio before you flashed the ROM? I think 4.1+ needs the updated radio to function properly.
I know you said you can't connect through ODIN, but I'm hoping it is because of some odd driver or odd ODIN version. That thread has the stuff to make it all work I believe.
I'm really hoping you can get ADB to work. If you can pull a logcat of your bootup process, it will be much easier to figure out what went wrong.

You guys are great!!! I really appreciate all the help. No matter what I do, ADB, Kies, different cables, different computers, nothing gets past the "USB Device Not Recognized" pop up. I let it sit for 15 minutes, twice. Still no love... I loaded TWRP_2.6.1.0_Hercules and then reboot and that's when it got stuck. Prior to that I had loaded TMobileT989UVMC6RootedDeodexed Rom. I forget where I got it. I'm pretty sure it was a 4.1.2 based rom.

weird... I am not sure why it is being so fussy with your phone.
Hopefully somebody has a better suggestion than I do, but my next thought is to try ebay-ing the phone in hopes that somebody gives you a few bucks for it. It sounds to me like the internal memory module is dying and the USB port is shot.
Is your water damage sticker pink/red or missing? It should be under the battery.
I hate thinking that the phone is just dead, but without being able to connect it to the PC in either recovery or download mode and not being able to boot into a ROM or recovery, I think the next step is to scrap it and hope somebody can send you a few bucks... or if you have experience soldering, maybe try replacing the USB connector?
I could be wrong mind you... The only time I had issues like that it was due to a badly flashed recovery and I needed to use ODIN to get back up and running. As a thought, do you have a Windows XP 32-bit computer you could try plugging the phone into? And while the phone is plugged in, can you check device manager for all devices? maybe try installing the drivers manually? I suggest windows XP 32bit because that is what I use the majority of the time with my phone. I've also used Windows 7 64-bit and it worked.

that sucks. I've heard good things about Swappa, but living in Canada I can't use it. My opinion it sounds like you got a dud and based on how hard the guy is fighting to not give you a refund, I wouldn't be surprised if he knew it was doa and just fluked out and get it running before he sold it. Or maybe it got water damaged and he knew it would fail soon so he sold it before it completely quit.
I hope you get it all sorted out.
Good luck and sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

ok so heres what happened. forgot my phone was rooted. i tried tmobile ota update. kicked me out into twrp. i messed aroun and bascily now i have no os or anything. i accidentally formatted everything in the phone. its the white 32gb tmobile version if that matters. to make things worse, i use ubuntu 14.04 LTS. no windows. cant even figure out how to get windows on the pc. and no i cant go buy it. noodle budget. i also messed with the fat32 thing and it said unable to make fat32 partition. basicly. its screwed. i need to know what to do about this. i have the lg flash tool, the original .dll and .tot ready to go. but theres the linux thing. everytime i try to connect it to the computer in download mode it said could not mount adroid device or something like that, now it wont even come on for me. i dont know what to do about this. no i couldnt get adb sideload to start, i couldnt mount in download mode, i could get adb to recognise the device but thats about it. i pushed a couple roms to it but nadda. after installing succesfully it just went right back to twrp. i need a video or something that i can slightly understand on how to fix this.
Your best bet is to set up a virtual box and virtualize it. I guess in twrp if you can still get access to it. Is to wipe system and all that fun stuff so it can reformat it to ext4 then try to adb sideload the rom that matches the update as close as possible. The only thing I can think of is that the update messed up partitions so when you flash a rom it can't all fit like it used too.
Sorry if I didnt help I'm just trying my method I had to do when I had my g2

This is my situation as well. No OS. Can't get a ROM to flash successfully via SD card. Bumping this thread for some serious assistance. What do we do?

you should be able to download a windows 7 and use for 30 days for free. after 30 days, you still can extend it to another 30 days. that should be enough to get you phone back
Wow... reading OP was like a mirror into my own experience except I am on W81 I have tried in every way imaginable to fix this issue with LG Flashtool and it constantly tells me that it can't boot into download mode even though it is already set into it. What other options are there to fix things? I am at wits end..

You must have Windows Virtual Box if running Linux, Ubuntu, Solaris, or Mac. Start HERE. It can be tricky for some, you may want to read this whole page before attempting.
