Hello everyone,
I just got a MHL adapter and I'm trying to move some 4gb+ 720p mkv movie files so i can watch it in the big screen.
However, when i tried to move them on the sd card or internal storage, it says it can't do it.
Now the filesystem on the sd card is fat32 and i know there's some kind of limitation. What would you guys do? Maybe I can reformat the microsd card to another system like NTSF or EXFAT?
Thanks Guys

yes, ntsf is going to be your best bet for gettin 4gb+ files on it, saw this same quandary over on the ASUS transformer prime forums. i heard exfat wasnt working, but that may just be on the tablet, idk. just passing along the knowledge!
You could always try formatting the card as either NTFS or exFAT, either one supports file sizes of 4gb+
Barring that, you might be able to make use of a DLNA app (AllShare maybe) to stream it over your network to your phone

just did some quick googling and people say android won't recognize your sdcard once you format it as NTFS.
I think the only thing you can do is split the video into two parts and then play

NTFS doesn't work, our device only recognizes fat32. The file size limit is approx 4.1 gb for the E4GT so I just take the .mkv file and reconvert it if it exceeds. Use AVS Video Converter or Freemake Video Converter. You won't notice the difference if you compress the file a little unless your bit rate is too low. Converting to .avi/divx/mp4 while keeping the bit rate around 3000kbps and min frame rate @23fps still looks amazing on our device, and most of the time you're still retaining a 720p image(depending on the tweeks). Hope this helps!
Doesn't seem to work. Over 2.5 GB'ish video files won't be able to play completely through. It will freeze after about the 10 minute mark or so into the video.

On stock video player? File possibly corrupt, did you convert the file yourself? I've had no problems playing avi/divx/mkv/mpeg...

On stock player, mx video player, and moboplayer. File is not corrupt as it will play through my WDTV media player. I have gotten files that are 2.2 GB to play all the way through but not those over 2.5 GB.

I'm looking to watch the movies the HDTV not the phone.
Do you think converting the files will have the same quality when watching on the HDTV?

Only if your resolution closely matches that of your tv. Too small of a res will make your set expand the picture.

Have you tried different cables? (when transferring from computer to phone) The one shipped with our device should realistically be used for charging only, not good for data transfer.

I personally use multiavchd for everything blu-ray. its the best software i have used for hd content. i have 8 tb of blu-ray movies, so i have had experience. You can set file limit for when to split. I would set limit at 4.0 gigs so that once it hits it splits the file, then i can burn to 2 regular dvds instead of a dvd9.
ok so i tried to transfer a movie from my pcto my sdcard 5.5gb but it says file too large...i know ican prbly make my card from fat32 to ntfs but im not sure if android works well with ntfs...from what ive read....yea i read i can rar the file into two seperate files..but is there any other way???

Correction: 4gb is the limit.
Another thing you can try is to format your sdcard to EXT3 (EXT4), you won't be able access it from windows though, without special tools..
Or maybe...[HOWTO][exFAT][WORK IN PROGRESS] Mount exFAT formatted drives and cards
And finally, perhaps next time you convert that BluRay disk (yeah, right..), use h264 (x264) codec and mp4 container versus mkv, they tend to have better quality-per-mb rate
Guys, I have a question about types of SD Cards LG Nitro HD supports, but I don't want open a new topic, so I'm gonna ask it here.
I bought SanDisk Micro SDHC 32GB Ultra HC1, but it make me some troubles - crashed unexpectedly when I listen to music or watch the movie (Always with the same damn error, that I'm trying to use unsupported format. I'm talking about .avi and .mp3 files).
Anyone have any idea WTF is going on with this card or phone?

Just curious, have you tried EXT(3/4) formatted sdcard with our phone? Does it work?
As a pure storage I haven't tried, however in the past I did partition SD card to have ext3 partition along side of fat32, back then a rom I used (on atrix 4g) was able use that partition as additional storage for the phone.
You can try serveral ways.
1. Copy sd-card to computer via micro-sd adapter, format/partition it with cwm on your phone and then just copy the whole content back to sd-card to use for storage. At least this will eliminate future problems with the card, since it does not come formatted for your phone, it is formatted for cameras etc (i.e. sxt-fat/fat32).
2, Convert the movie into a smaller format, h.264 mp4 or whatever your video player happens to support and plug-in phone to the usb port for transfer, or again, use micro-sd adapter, whichever you prefer.
3. You may want to check out the movie file for the sound format that it is recorded with, since some players only support a certain amount of channels. Keep in mind, blue-ray, even when converted, sometimes forces to much data into the player which will most likely result in a crash/force close/or even lock-up your device.
But as for your original question, go with the first suggestion and give it a go.
Does anyone know how to access nexus media importer location of usb drive, via file manager? Where is location located? Because when I am watching a movie, I want to enable subtitles for it. In MX Player, when I try to select subtitles, I am just directed to the internal sd card by default. But I cant select my subtitles because I cant find the folder where they are located. I tried "mnt" and almost all other folders aswell but there is no usb folder where my usb content is in.
Some movies have built in subtitles so I can just enable them (white cloud in the top right corner in mx player), but most of the time, I have to do it manually. When I am browsing in nexus media importer app, I can see subtitles there. But I cant copy them off to sd card. Seems like it is read only.
I also tried to rename subtitles to the same name as movie name, because this trick enables subtitles on older dvd players, but here, there is still no white cloud in mx player so I still have to enable them manually.
I am rooted and I tried stickmount app and a lot of similar ones aswell, but they dont work. They dont even show contant of the USB (but they do detect it).
Nexus media importer works flawlessly, and reads big 12gb with over 10 mb bit rate movie without any problems. It just works. Other apps, not so much.
I am using nexus 7 2013 and usb stick is A-Data S102 Pro Advanced 64GB formatted to NTFS.
Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks
edit: I think that "Nexus 7 (2013) Themes and Apps" would be more appropriated section so mods should move it. Sorry

Nexus Media Importer is just an app that reads the contents of the USB Drive and forwards/streams the selected file to another app, which in your case is MX Player or saves/copies the selected file to internal storage. Nexus Media Importer works like a file server to MX Player. The contents of the USB drive is invisible to the Android ecosystem. On the other hand, Stickmount mounts the usb drive to a specific directory like /mnt/sdcard/usbStorage/sda1 and makes it available to the whole Android ecosystem.
To solve your problem, you can select the video file from Nexus Media Importer then tap the save button. Do this as well for the subtitle file. The copied files will then be located at the \mnt\sdcard directory. You can directly open it with MX Player and load the subtitle as long as they have the same filename.
A better alternative is to re-install Stickmount and then flash a custom kernel (search for elementalx) to enable NTFS Read/Write functionality.
If you don't want to install a custom kernel, your last option is to re-format the USB Drive to FAT32 and splitting you videos into 4GB files.
Hi:
FYI, Nexus Media Importer also supports NTFS, just not for the advanced write feature. NTFS works fine for streaming and can be easily manipulated on a pc.

Thanks I figured a way to download subtitles from USB to sd card and than add it to the movie.
I'm running a couple of hand-me-down One Vs for lightweight duty (one is a music streamer, one is a 2nd phone line just for kicks) and neither have much installed, so there is plenty of room on "Internal Storage" (184MB used/747MB available). But without an SD card, it refuses to let me take a picture, save a playlist, download an APK, add a new ringtone, etc.
Is there anyway I can get it to just use the Internal Storage for that sort of thing? Can I "repartition" that internal gigabyte somehow? Maybe some creative symlinks? I really don't want to get SD cards just to add a ringtone!
The both run SlimBean (4.1) if that makes any difference.
Thanks!

That depends, with root access you can copy ringtones from an sdcard to the root storage, and then move them to the default ringtone folder in the system. They may need to be the same file type which is probably .ogg but its worth a try as far a music is concerned you could make a folder in the root storage called music and place them all on there without issue, only trouble will be finding a music player that will look for them there. The default android player probably won't so it will need to be 3rd party if you need help change the ringtones to .ogg just ask

I'm used to connect SD cards or hard drives to my phone with OTG to quickly edit videos or work on pictures. But unfortunately the stock Gallery app and also others such as KineMaster, Power Director, Google Photos etc don't see the drive connected with media in it. Is there a way to force these apps to show it?
What's your experience?
Thanks
I have never seen in gallery files stored outside the device, tbh, I had always copied them into the device to work on them
I got it to work with Samsung's "My Files" app.

That is such a disappointment. I use it to quickly connect and edit videos from my action camera, or to edit videos stored in a HD with terabytes of files! I can't believe all the people using galaxy devices to actually work have all the necessary files in the internal storage!

True, file managers can see the external storage, but you can't access that same storage from gallery or media apps to work with video edit or photos.
Yes and no.
The Gallery app doesn't see external USB devices. But when you use My Files to open a photo, it will ask which app to use; Gallery is one of those choices.

Yes, but you can't do much. There's no edit button. Same thing if you open a video from "my files" with the video player app. The editor feature is gone.
I basically bought the note 10+ to do these things. Can someone check if using DEX is the same? Can you edit a video with Adobe Rush working on files stored in an external hard drive?
It is easier to transfer the files you need into the device

I'm not sure you can "manually" trigger DeX on the Note 10+. The only way I know is to either plug it into a DeX supported USB-C hub, DeX dock, USB-C to HDMI adaptor, or plug it into a Windows or Mac running Samsung DeX.

I usually work with terabytes of video files, transferring everything in the internal memory is obviously not an option.

Of course I mean connecting the phone to a monitor or a computer. I currently have no chance to try, can someone check if it's the same thing in DEX mode, eg. video editing apps can't access media stored on an external drive?
I can't believe this is how it works. There's an incredible amount of videos on YouTube showing off the video editing capabilities of this phone (and that's why I got it in the first place) and I can't believe nobody has pointed this out.
It's one of two things: either I'm missing something to make it work, or all those people are just showing off and they actually don't do any serious work on the phone. (Just marketing?)

It seems to be a problem with apps not the phone or the OS. Many if not most apps are optimized to use internal or microSD storage. The whole point of OTG isn't to do the editing on the files stored on the external device, but to share files between devices.
I am a photographer and I don't edit files on an external device like a USB drive or thumbdrive. I copy them to a NAS for both storage and editing. If I am away from my main system for an extended period, I copy them to my Surface Pro and do basic editing on that and then move them to my NAS when I get back.
The Note 10+ is a beast of a phone, but it still isn't quite as good as video editing on a Windows or Mac (or even Linux) PC.
My only reccomendation for now is to copy the files to the microSD card then edit from it. The connection between the phone and the microSD card is faster than an external USB device.

I don't agree on this. Also, they are the same apps that worked flawlessly on previous devices I had. On the LG phone I had before, I could see ask the folders containing pictures or videos in Google photos, perform a backup, or edit video in those apps I mentioned. So my guess is that it's a Samsung restriction.
I wonder if rooting might allow a workaround. Anyone with root with this experience?

I used a USB-C hub to trigger DeX and plugged in a thumb drive with a small video file. All I could do was play the video from My Files. Samsung Gallery did not see the video until I copied it to internal storage. The same goes for the SD Card. At that point I could open it and edit it.
