How can I tell?

Like most or all devices when you boot it up it would show a unlock icon on the bottom of the screen if the lock is closed its not unlocked
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app

There is no lock symbol on the boot screen.
Sent from my SM-T320 using Tapatalk

Then its prolly locked I know the past 3 devices I've had when I unlocked the boot loader it would show it every time I booted it up
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app

It is locked
Just went Into bootloader mode (odin) and Knox is there. So yes It is locked

very locked.
for those who like to tamper: there's a recovery firmware intended for the gtpab 8.4 for Ukraine available for download. Don't know if Kies works on this device yet.
But if you blow your device off the rails, this will get it booting again:
http://nasirtech.blogspot.com/2014/02/t320xxu1anb2-android-442-kitkat.html
Oh, my, this is better than I expected - it recovered /system but didn't blow out my personalization. Freaking wonderful!
If your device "recovery bootloops," by which I mean:
you try a Chainfire root from the snapdragon note 8 on the tab pro 8.4
your device boots and tells you that you're bad, that Samsung knows your bad, and then displays something like
"RECOVERY IS NOT SEANDROID ENFORCING...
Set Warranty bit : recovery"
and reboots you, here's the fix:
take your a slim object and starting at the USB port, pry the backing loose one snap at a time, working left to right along the bottom and around the lower corners on each side.
Now, gently, start to pry down each side.
You'll feel central resistance. That's because there's adhesive holding the backplate to an internal frame that laps over the USB connector. Gently pry that up.
Once you're about halfway down each side, you can see the battery connector - six wires, two each black, blue, red. Keep going; there is another point of resistance at the camera housing. Gently finesse that last after you have all the other snaps off.
Free the battery from the mainboard by prying up the connector, or unscrew the 4 screws holding it in place and use the battery's weight to free it from the mainboard.
Let the device sit about 30 seconds.
Reconnect the battery.
Hold the home, volume down and power buttons simultaneously to bring the device into download mode and recover using Odin or your tool of choice.
Once you've recovered, button it back up.

Well, if it's not unlocked it's very free about what it accepts. I did blow the Knox flag but I was able to upload modified system.img, recovery.img and cache.img without any problems. And I now have a persistent root.

Good point - the OS is locked to void warranty, but if the flashable system images are that simple to load, that's great. The onboard recovery won't load them and I don't think Kies will, either
But I think it's reasonable to say that the upgrade mode on the samsung devices is analogous to an unlocked bootloader.

As I said over in the root thread, I'm not going to share the actual image as it's probably likely to make your device explode in flames, and it will trigger the Knox flag. But basically I unpacked the stock recovery.img, added the CF Auto Root bits from another Samsung 4.4 device and the same with cache.img, packaged them up and flashed with ODIN. Once I had root, I re-flashed the original recovery and cache.

[Q] Broken Volume Keys - Cannot unlock bootloaders (Solved)

I recently received my phone back from Samsung. It was send in to replace external speaker that stopped working for no reason. Samsung fixed the speaker (or replaced it) however my volume keys don't work anymore.
I can get by using any widget or volume slider control to adjust the volume but the problem is I booted into bootloader mode (adb) and tried unlocking bootloader. By default option "No" was highlighted and in order to toggle between "Yes" or "No" volume keys are required and I don't have those working.
Is there any other way to achieve the same control functionality using touch screen to highlight "Yes" or "No" option on the unlock bootloader screen?
Any help would be appreciated. I want to explore some ideas before sending it back to Samsung again or try opening the phone and replace or fix keys myself.
(by the way, I am in US and it took 2+ months for my phone to come back after first repair because expansys-us had to send it back to Samsung UK to get it repaired.)
________________________________________________
Updates:
I wanted to post a quick update on this thread to help out anybody who might run into a similar situation.
So I received my phone back and the note from my shipper (expansys-usa) says that phone couldn't be fixed because the volume key ribbon is ripped off the main board. Now funny thing is that either Samsung or Expansys-USA opened up my phone to repair the external speaker (reason it went out the first time) and when I received it back the volume keys were not working. So much for getting your device repaired by the OEM.
Only way to repair this sort of problem is to change the board which is technically possible but not possible because your motherboard carries information like IMEI etc . They never offered to send me a new phone or anything but just a note saying that ... can't repair. Also, to make things worse, they flashed Yakjuxw (samsung) image on my phone to restore it back to stock. Which killed the updates for me.
Anyways, I kept looking and ran into a post where chainfire posted a thread with roms packaged into ODIN. Now most important thing about this sort of thing is that it unlocks your bootloader in the process. Once I got that things started getting better and better.
I got the ODIN rom. Used the USB jig to initiate download mode, from there I flashed the rom package. Once I got the rom flashed and bootloaders unlocked. I downloaded Gnex toolkit from the main development thread and flashed custom touch recovery.
Well after having custom recovery I was back in the game and the rom flashing game started again. Only difference is that I have to be now very careful before flashing anything because if any rom fails to boot then I am stuck and can't do anything other than to just to break out my USB jig and fire up ODIN and start from zero ... all the way to JB 4.2.
Hope this helps anybody who is or will be facing the same problem (which I hope not).
No, there is no way to unlock the bootloader without the volume and power keys.
But you can still root if you are running 4.0.1 or 4.0.2. See link in my sig.

Thanks efrant for the suggestion. I tried looking into that method but my rom is already updated to the patched kernel version.
So, I have sent it out again for repair. Let's see if Samsung can fix it without giving me anymore trouble.

Demand they pay for shipping, or depending how long you've had your device, that they send you a new one.
Supposedly, its 14 days and they'll ship you a new device as long as you provide credit card info and ship the old one back. I was 21 days in, the power buttons stopped working, and all they could offer me was a repair. Idiots at Samsung (not reps, the ones that tell them what to do/say) told me to call T-Mobile to give me a "loaner" phone while Samsung fixes it.
I immediately said "One, I bought this phone without a contract, so they have no obligation. And two, why should T-Mobile have to deal with me for your faulty device?". Then I told them I would just sell it as is and get the HTC One S since HTC phones don't have these issues, and the rep immediately passed me over to where they set up a warranty phone.
Again, this depends on how long you've had it. Rules say a Max of 14 days, they bent it only a week more for me. I wouldn't expect any more than that.

Although I haven't tested it out, this may work for you:
On the Nexus One, we were still able to flash signed images, even with a locked bootloader. If this holds true for the Galaxy Nexus, you can flash an older version of the stock images (say 4.0.2), then you can root, and once you have root, we have figured out how to unlock the bootloader without the physical keys. I can guide you through it all if you want.

You actually don't need fastboot or volume buttons to unlock the bootloader this way: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=41612401#post41612401. HTH!

Would it be possible?

My screen is cracked. And a friend wants to sell me his galaxy s3 (perfect screen but bricked) for cheap. Would it be possible to simply take the motherboard from my phone, and put it in the other phone? Or would me having a custom rom and recovery, mess up with other parts of the phone? I wouldn't think so, since all the main chips seem to be on the motherboard. But I just wanted to get the opinion of someone who probably has more knowledge of this stuff than me.

Very easy and yes it will work. Just had one apart today. Just pull screws on back. Back plate is 2 part. Pull all connectors from board. 2 score was and its out. Just be careful removing board. The volume and power buttons are fragile. Imei on plate under battery will be wrong but no biggie.

Thanks and it gets stuck on the first samsung splash screen. I'm not sure what to make of it, I at least never heard of that kind of brick. But for 50 bucks, I'd rather take my chances with that rather than 200 for a whole new screen assembly.
Sent from a galaxy far far away.
What kind of brick is it exactly...if it boots up in any way it probably isn't completely bricked.
Eh Soft-bricked. Can easily fix but shouldn't tell him if you want his phone lol.
Basically, he only needs to get in download mode (vol down+home+power) and flash stock with Odin.

Yeah if you see a splash screen it's fine 99% of the time and just flash it stock... also depends on how good of a friend you are . I'd tell him
It won't go into download mode, that's the weird part about that brick, and why he's selling it to me for so cheap. recovery mode doesn't work either. Just shows the first splash screen and that's it a jtag (I think it's called) will probably get it to go into download mode, but whatever, I just want the screen

Eh, if it boots, it isn't hardbricked. JTAG probably isn't needed. You would be surprised how many people can't get in to DL or Recovery mode because they are doing it wrong. If you do buy his phone, I would restore it rather than risk swapping out screens and such.

A quick jig hit and it would be forced into download mode. But yeah, you're right. Usually it's user error :silly:
I bought it today and I definitely know how to get into download mode and it won't let me. Gonna get a precision screwdriver set tomorrow, then swap the boards thanks for your help everyone!

T989 Boot Loop Question

Guys/Gals,
I have an issue with my T989 that just arose over the weekend. First a little background about my experience and what has been done to the phone. I had the phone rooted with various versions of JB installed around a year ago. I was basically trying different firmwares, it was like a hobby. I decided to go back to stock FW around this same time (around a year ago) and have been running stock since then. In other words, I did not keep custom FW on the device very long.
This weekend, my phone just decided to crash when I was trying to send a text. I thought maybe the battery was dead so I plugged the phone in. The phone came up and goes through the progress bar located on the "Samsung Galaxy SII Android 4G Tmobile" screen. It gets almost all the way to the end of the progress bar and then shuts down and reboots starting the process over again. Occasionally it will make it all the way through and go to the "Samsung" flash screen that normally proceeds getting into the actual OS. When it does make it this far, the Samsung logo just keeps flashing and it never proceeds further.
I try to enter download mode via power + the up and down volume keys. Doing this leads me to the start of download mode; however, the droid falls over dead with a red triangle and exclamation point appearing around his stomach area and the following message appears for a moment before rebooting:
"
--Verifying internal MMC block
checksum confirmation -> check (0)
Not need checksum confirmation
already executed!!...
# MANUAL MODE #
"
One big problem with this is I cannot enter download mode and my PC does not recognize the device. When it actually makes it to the SAMSUNG logo, the device is seen as "unknown." I have the drivers and try to install them, but windows provides the following error message: I don't have it verbatim, but it is an error 29 and states the devices firmware failed to allocate resources.
Any ideas? I am leaning towards the internal memory is damaged. Do you think a JIG stick would help me get into download mode or will I probably get the same error message?
Thanks!
Not sure if this will fix your problem, but to get into download(Odin) mode you need to hold volume up + down and plug USB into your computer.

Thanks for the reply. I am able to initiate download mode as you described, but receive the error I described above almost immediately. Download mode just won't launch. The device errors out and I get the droid with the red triangle coming out of his stomach and the device reboots. I just ordered a USB jig. Hopefully it can save my device. I am not liking my chances.

If you take out the battery and put it back in does the phone turn on by itself? It kind of sounds like you may have a sticky power button. If that is indeed the problem, there is some stuff you can try near the end of this thread:

Its not too hard to remove the power button and put on another. Its also a hell of a lot cheaper than getting a new phone. Its worth a shot id say. Button is less than 5 bucks. A reputable electronics shop would likely only charge 10 bucks to solder it on if you disassemble it and have everything ready. Its easy to remove the entire logic board. Before taking it to them though, try blowing the button out with compressed air. It fixed my bootloop

I opened the phone and tried the fix from the forum link above. My power button is still clicking and does not appear to be sticking. I don't think this is the issue. I am leaning towards internal memory error. I should have my usb jig tomorrow. I ordered a Nexus 4 in the mean time. I will sell this phone if I get it working. Thanks for the assistance!
Well guys and gals, I think my phone is officially dead. I received my USB JIG and the phone actually goes into "download mode" and displays the following:
Factory Mode
Product Name: SGH-T989
Custom Binary Download: No
Current Binary: Samsung Official
The problem is the PC still sees it as "unknown" with the firmware error "29" message. I don't know what else to try. Any other thoughts?
Thanks!

Screen is not working

My phone screen is not working, sometimes it displays pink color, sometimes black, nothing works.
I am sending it back to ATT for warranty replacement. How can I reset it to stock? how i will know, whether there is a water damage?
TIA
After search, I found that water damage, can be found on the battery or white strip under the battery.
How to get back to stock? I am unable to go into download mode, as I cannot see anything on screen.

Try using Kies to install the stock ROM, i believe it will reboot the phone to download mode automatically from the normal power on state. This will not change your flash counter however, if it has been tripped.
I recently had to get a note 2 with a broken screen into download mode. It takes a bit of patience, but try holding power, volume down and home for around 5 seconds and then press volume up and plug it in. It took me a few tries to get right, but it's possible.

Try this
It's up to you...
I had a water damage issue once with a phone, about 5-6 months ago. A friend told me to go to best buy and get their insurance for $12 per month, NO DEDUCTIBLE. I waited almost two weeks and went into a different Best Buy and said my son accidentally tipped my drink and spilled water on my phone and now it doesn't work. I got a new one, no questions asked without paying ANYTHING, except the first months payment when I signed up. Hell its worth a shot of you have nothing else to fall back on.

I've never used it so someone can correct me if im wrong, but from what i understand all you need is to download kies, plug the phone in and it will recognize the device, then just tell it to update the firmware. I (think) it will download the latest full package, reboot the phone into download mode and install it. As far as reseting the flash counter the only way i know of is the triangleaway app which would be pretty hard to do with no display. Not really sure if something could possibly be done from an ADB shell.

Sorry for late response.
After 2 days of keeping it inside rice, screen started working with some random colors and menu and back button not working. So i used tirangleaway app to reset the counter, and then installed stock rom, using ODIN.
Already sent it for warranty exchange, Lets wait for couple of weeks, if I didnt hear anything, then its all good.
No news is always a good news
If the flash counter is 0 and the rom is unmodified and unrooted then you are fine on that end, water damage is another story .

Correct, to enter download mode it's that three button combo. That stated, there are other things about which you may wish to ask, such as the receipt, date of purchase, reason for selling such a relatively new device (could be that it's beyond the returned item window), etc.
In a word, if you plan on rooting the device and installing recovery, a blown Knox fuse may be of less concern than a bad tablet (ie, hardware failure).
