I've been at stock root for a long time, and after being nagged about the OTA update to 4.3, decided to install Smoothest Note2/3 Rom from here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2582027
Before doing so, in TWRP I made a backup and also copied that backup to my PC. I also used the app MyBackupPro to back up all info and copied that to my pc as well.
I believe I followed the instructions properly to install the Rom, but am now told there is no OS installed.
I can access both TWRP and download mode via Vol up/down home and power. But that's about it at the moment.
Can anyone help in getting back up and running? I think/hope I can use the backup on my pc to reflash to the phone?

I just tried to flash Phiz v 6.01.2 tar.mdf via Odin. And although Odin says PASS and complete, I have lost recovery, including the TWRP that I had.
Now I just have download mode. Can I flash a recovery image via Odin to get it back up? I'm starting to get myself a little worried now

Hello,
I had my phone rooted and on the last stock ICS ROM. I wanted to install CWM so I downloaded the app from the Play store and hit the install recovery button. I chose the Epic 4g as it was the closest device to mine. Now when I go into recovery I get a strange looking recover multi CSC version? Very few choices and whenever I try to flash a zip they always fail authentication. PC Odin does not recognize the phone. What can I do to either get ODIN back or the real CWM? Thanks.

If you can go into whatever that recovery is try this... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1865102
I don't see any other option.
Whats up with so many new bricks?? Why don't you all read and ask before doing stupid things? There are NO apps that install ANYTHING like that to our phone.

OP, can you post more details as to how you got that recovery?
This is good information for others to avoid having problems, honestly.
(And if CWM site is saying that it works someone should kindly inform them that it does not.)

The funny thing is I can use the phone. It works fine except that since the TAR file of FK09 did not install the modem I have no 3g but do have 4G and WIFI. If I am able to root the phone I should be able to use Mobile Odin again to install the modem file. We shall see.

Only 2 ways to flash a modem are CWM and PC Odin.
If you're already on FK09 try flashing the Rooted nodata version and see if that gets you back where you need to be.
You'll lose CWM but that may not be for too long.
You can always flash one of Agat's CWM repacks for ICS, backup/restore and then flash back the stock FK09 kernel via Odin for now.

I have attached a picture of what the recovery screen looks like on my E4GT. It doesn't matter if I try to update from external sdcard or through ADB Sideload command, everything fails signature verification. Thanks for all of the help so far.

ICS 4.0.4 (FI27?) the stock rooted OTA. I had root so I ended up using Mobile ODIN to flash the KJ09 tar file but it didn't bring the modem so I have no 3g.
I saw something about version 2e not having the signature check. I need to find a properly signed modem.bin or how to downgrade my phone to 2e.
Sorry this seems to be really obvious question, but Did you try flashing a kernel/recovery through mobile Odin?

I appreciate everyone's attempts at helping me so I will lay out where my phone is at this momen:
ODIN recovery no longer exists on my phone. When I hold down vol down+power the phone boots up normally - NO ODIN
The recovery that does come up is the Android Standard Recovery 3e which has signature validation turned on - this makes all of the files fail since they are not properly signed.
I am trying to find a way to downgrade the Standard recovery to 2e (no signature verification) or see if signature verification can be turned off in 3e.
I am hoping that getting any of the official Sprint update files might help as those should be signed.
Thanks in advance to all.

1) Any luck with a USB jig?
2) Any luck trying 'reboot download' from ADB and seeing if that will get you to ODIN?
If memory serves.. and you're really stuck on recovery as the only option you're going to need to find a way to dump an update.zip onto the phone to get anything to flash. And here's the tricky part - I think it needs to be in a certain location. There are custom .ZIPs that have signatures on them - crawj might even be able to help with that.
If we can't get you to Odin then let's figure out how you can use the recovery to do that... recover. But let's hope we can find you a way to get into Odin one way or another.

1. I don't know what the USB jig is, where can i find info on that?
2. I have tried that from ADB and it simply reboots the phone into the OS. Seems there is no ODIN to be found on the phone.
Where would I find signed Zip files to try to restore to FI27? Thanks.

Wait... You can get into the system?
Then why not download the Mobile Odin Lite (free here on XDA), flash Agat's 0.6.0 repack and then crawj's FI27 rooted .ZIP through Agat's recovery?
That should not only fix the Odin problem but everything else!

Hey guys I'm new to the forum so please tolerate my lack of knowledge. I've already flashed a few s3's with roms, so I'm familiar with process. I bought another s3, installed cwm recovery with odin, and then went into recovery and flashed su. Rebooted and made sure it was rooted.
I then did something different, which was updated to newer cwm recovery using rom manager. I rebooted into recovery using rom manager. I went through all steps and flashed darthstalker v3 (I've already flashed this on other s3's successfully many times). I rebooted system, but instead of booting into rom it keeps booting back into recovery (cwm, not android recovery). I can get into download mode and flash stock rom with odin. I tried repeating process and used twrp instead of cwm, but still can't boot into rom. It keeps rebooting into recovery (cwm or twrp). Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Try completely wiping your phone then PC Odin using root66 in download mode. Afterwards, let the phone sit for 15 minutes. Reboot the phone then download and install GooManager from the Play Store. Open the application and press the menu button to access the options. Press 'install openrecovery' and go through the installation process. You should now have no issue with your device.

Will try that tomorrow. I got hasty and hardbricked it ((. Foolishly flashed exitrecovery.zip, not realizing it was only for LG! Getting it unbricked tomorrow, and will try your suggestion. Thnx.
I'm totally boggled here, I've never had problems like this. I've rooted my T-999, no problems there, but when I install CWM, either the non-touch or touch versions, it doesn't boot into that recovery. When you recovery boot, either manual or through ROM Manager, it just boots to the stock recovery. I've tried re-installing through ROM Manager and through Odin, to no avail. I'm pulling my hair out...help!
Just use the the root 66 method and then use goomanager to install twrp recovery. Did this process for my brothers S III last night over the phone.
I had the same problem before. Tried multiple ways but the cwm recovery will not stick, even though it appears working in Odin. Only way I got cwm recovery to install is by going back to an earlier version os.
You need to find an earlier version of factory stock jelly bean or better yet ics and flash it with Odin. Make sure it's a factory image. After that just root and install cwm recovery with Galaxy s3 toolkit. Then just install whatever rom you like.

Why do all that when you can flash the latest through ODIN; and get the correct partition tables setup, and that has root, and then install the recovery via an app? Seems more logical to me.

I was not aware you can install the recovery through an app. I'm not familiar with the process so maybe you can talk the op through it.
When I had my problem with the cwm recovery not sticking from Odin, it was when the jelly bean update was just release for T-Mobile. Just letting the op know that I had the same problem and how I got it working.

Okay I thought I was missing something. Ya the new update surprised me as well last night with ODIN not working to flash a recovery. It's available in CWM app ROM manager I prefer TWRP though which is available in GooManager via menu>Install OpenRecoveryScript>yes> so long as it says "2.4.1.0" and "D2TMO" then yes and boot recovery to install from there.
I followed mt3g's advice and did the root66 method and then installed via ROM Manager and I had success. Flashing a new ROM now. Thanks!

Hello,
My unrooted At&T galaxy s3 will not go past the Samsung Galaxy SIII splash screen. When I enter recovery it just gives me a dead android guy.
I had this problem before and to fix it, I used odin to flash the stock 4.0.4, then I flashed 4.1.1 (I think these are the correct versions, I followed instructions here), then my phone wouldn't OTA update to touchwiz 4.3 so I flashed it using recovery mode using instructions and files I found here. The phone worked fine for a few weeks after that, but then started to reboot randomly and delete apps. Eventually it just stopped working all together which is where I am now.
I tried to install TWRP using odin which odin says worked but when I try to go to recovery mode I still just see the dead android guy. The phone did not have USB debugging mode turned on so I am not sure if I could install a custom recovery at all.
I tried the CF-auto root that I found here which got partway through and then failed.
Do you guys have any suggestions? Is there a stock touchwiz 4.3 rom that I could flash using odin??
Thank you very much, please let me know if you require any more information, I really want to get my phone working again.

Try flashing the TWRP again with Odin, but make sure the auto reboot option on the left is unchecked in Odin. After flashing, unplug the phone and then hold volume up + menu + power buttons at the same time until it reboots.

Try flashing the TWRP again with Odin, but make sure the auto reboot option on the left is unchecked in Odin. After flashing, unplug the phone and then hold volume up + menu + power buttons at the same time until it reboots.

I just tried it with only F. Reset Time checked, it installs it and says a green Pass!. I then unplugged it, tried to hold volume up + menu + power buttons for a while but nothing happened. I pulled the battery and then did volume up + menu + power buttons and went straight back to dead android guy. Any ideas?
Only other thing right now is to make sure you have the latest odin, which is 3.09

Trying everything with the new version of Odin results in all the same results.
Does anyone know if there is a tar (Odin flashable) version of update43.zip found in this thread?

Thanks!

No there's no Odin flash-able there.
Sorry, we don't seem to have any answers for your problem. It seems like it may be more of a hardware issue than software.
Did you phone boot after flashing stock 4.04?

Yes it did, the first time that this started happening. But I was unable to do that again, I thought since I flashed all the way to 4.3 and I read that once you go to 4.3 you can't go back. Is that correct?
Thank you for your help. I was hoping to try an odin flashable touchwiz 4.3 but I can't seem to find one.
So you had 4.04 on your phone and you used OTA updates to get to 4.3? If this is correct, then you can't flash a stock AT&T 4.3 ROM because it has never been made available to the public; therefore, the only 4.3 ROMs that may work are based on the leaked AT&T 4.3 ROM or compiled from an OTA update.
Once of these ROMs may get your phone going again: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2498233

Thank you for your suggestion, all the ones I tried there need recovery to flash...not odin. Is it possibly to make an odin file from a recovery flash file??
Thanks!

Did you try installing Philz Touch from Odin? As was suggested earlier, don't use auto reboot. Once Philz has been installed and you see Reset in the window, disconnect the USB cable, remove the battery, replace the battery, boot into recovery, wipe and flash a custom ROM. This may help you get your phone working for now.

Did you try philz or cwm? I am not sure why stock recovery is not being overwritten.

I tried twrp and philz, I haven't tried cwm yet, should I? Is it not working because I didn't enable USB debugging before it stopped working?
Thanks for your help!

Nope, USB debugging will not make a difference.
The latest Philz Touch is based on the latest CWM. After your flash Philz, are you letting the phone auto reboot on its own after flashing in Odin?
I know of no way to convert a custom ROM so it can be flashed in Odin.
