Hey Guys,
I have a problem with my desktop that when I attempt to transfer any .mkv file to my 32gb wifi nexus 7(2013) via USB, file explorer crashes and resets. This happens on both large and small files and only with .mkv files. I am able to zip the file and then transfer to the tablet, but this requires a lot more time and additional steps that I would rather not have to do every time. Does anyone have any solution to make the direct transfer from Windows 8 to the Nexus 7 work?
Note: I have searched Google for any solutions, but it seems the general solution is removing DivX from the desktop- which I do not have installed.
Thanks in advance!
Found the solution to my problem and am posting just in case it can help anyone in a similar instance in the future. Though I did not have DivX installed, I did have shark007's codecs installed on my desktop and this was causing the problem. I found a solution from androidcentral (Sorry I cant submit a link to the forum, my account here is new):
"Howdy again, If you are using the Shark 007 Codec Pack in Win7 x64, open the Settings Application x64 file (Run as Administrator) and go to the MKV Tab, then Tick the Disable the DivX Media Foundation splitter. The DivX MF splitter will do the thumbnailing when enabled box and this will allow you to copy and paste or send to the Nexus. Tested and working well. Hope this also helps!"
Hope this helps!
Great to know! I've had Explorer crashes before, but only with certain AVIs (usually but not always greater than 4 gigs), and I have neither the Shark 007 Codec Pack nor Win7 x64. The general problem is that Windows is trying to make a thumbnail or otherwise grab info from the file, to where I couldn't move or delete the file outside of Safe Mode.

Hi there,
I am a new one here. I tried to read as much as possible about core player and touch HD, but I didn´t found answer for me. So my problem is here. I have downloaded core player - The core media player v4.11. I have it on my desktop computer. Next step - copy it on storage card. Next step - I hit the The Core Media Player v4.11.exe and now I get this message "The Core Media Player v4.11 is not a valid pocker PC application. well, strange, but ok. I tried some other versions, also DivxPlayer PPC and I think also TCPMP. Or I downloaded a player with no exe file and files ending with .001, .002...
Is there any advice? I am 100 % sure that I am making somewhere very stupid mistake, but I am not very skilled with PC, neither smartphone
thank you very much

Run the .exe file on your computer whilst your phone is linked via active sync.
result of running .exe (based on SD card) while phone and desktop are synced is that core player alloes my installation on my desktop...
That's why I said run .exe file on your computer! Delete the .exe file from your phone it is not meant to be on it.
1.Place .exe file on desktop.
2.Connect phone to computer using activesync.
3.Doubleclick(i.e. run) the exe file on your computer and it will install it on the phone.
thank you very much for support. problem is solved!
I hope that this will help also some other people with minimum experiences.
BIG thank you TRAVIS
I'm trying to play AVI files across my network from a samba share in Rockplayer. I use Astro or ES file manager but neither of them will open AVI files in rockplayer.
Any suggestions?
I´ve been trying to figure this out too, but no luck so far.
i dont think android does file association does it?
If your handy with the terminal you could mount the share to a folder on the sdcard, then browse to it from rockplayer.

The problem is astro and estrongs file manager are more like samba share browsers - they let you view the share files and folders, but when you try to access any files, they have to copy them to a local directory first. It's more like ftp access in practical terms, rather than true network filesystem access.
So if you succeeded in associating rockplayer with avi files through either astro or estrongs, then the moment you click on an avi file from your samba share, they'd copy the file to your sdcard entirely before it would begin to play. So at best, setting the association would only save you the effort of manually copying and pasting the avi file. Either way you'll be waiting a few minutes for the file to copy to a directory local to your phone.
If you want to access avi files over a samba share directly, you'll need to root and use cifs to mount the samba share on your sdcard, so that the share appears part of the phone's filesystem. Then you can just browse using rockplayer's own file manager throughout your samba share, and play avi files the moment they're clicked on, without any file copy operations or waiting around.
when i got my desire 3 weeks ago i was in the same quandary, and i ended up going the rooted phone with cifs option...

Another way of sorting this easily is using VLC Stream & Convert - with the added advantage of being able to browse your whole computer and mapped drives and stream data.
I'm using root file explorer to connect to my Samba shared NAS (goflex home).
If I copy a .mkv file to my local sdcard, when I click the file (in file expert) it gives me the popup of what program I want to open the video file in. I click mxplayer, it plays just fine.
But if I connect via SMB to my NAS, when I click the same .mkv file, it won't let me pick a video player; instead it says it can't find a default program for this type of file, do I want it to search for one or no thanks. Search for one fails, and no thank just returns me to the File Expert screen. If I want to take the time (and SPACE) I can copy that same mkv file to my sdcard and play it.
So, my question is, how do I get file Expert to give me the video player prompt when connecting via SMB?
As a side not I've tried ES File Explorer in Lan Mode and always get Login Failure connecting to the goflex_home NAS (even though I've triple checked the login credentials and am using the same as in File Expoer).
I've also tried Avia to use DLNA and it sometime works but it doesn't show my Samba shares, it shows my DLNA shares and for some reason doesn't show all of them, including the files I want to play (and yes I shared them already with the Goflex Home config panel.
tl;dr -- how do I tell file expert to use mxplayer when browsing SMB shares, instead of the popup asking to find a program to handle the file?
Edit: Made some progress; tweaked the ES File Expert connection settings to connect to the root of my share and can connect and it gives me the choice of what file player to use -- though it seems to fail streaming. the same file I can play fine from sdcard chokes and is unplayable over streaming.
Alternately, does anyone have a better solution for this problem entirely?
Edit2: Sorry a but more info. When the mkv file is on my sdcard and I click it, I get the same error popup. If I hold down on the file fore afew seconds, I can click "Open As" then "Video" then pick my player. But in SMB exploring, holding down doesn't have an "Open as" option in the menu.
i second this question... same here with samba!!!
anybody knows?
It gives me option to select the player.
Hi,
for some time now, I've started noticing slight differences between what I see in the Windows Explorer when accessing my Galaxy Nexus and what "actually" is on it - be it through a on-device file explorer or via "adb shell - ls".
The funny thing is, the music app e.g. also thinks there are certain files still on the Nexus, just the same that are shown in the Windows Explorer. When I try playing them, an error message occurs ("the requested file could not be played").
Same thing the other way around: some files can only be seen by on-device sources, and when I try to copy files of the same name to the device through the Windows Explorer, I get an error message there.
Anybody else with the same problem? Any ideas for solving the problem? Guess it's got something to do with the MTP support of Windows 7...
I'm seeing similar behaviour. Just noticed that Windows Explorer is not showing me a gpx track file on my device, although it shows all other files in the directory. Browsing on the GNex locally shows it's there indeed. I'm running AOKP M6 with Air Kernel, for what it's worth.
Edit: Just found another thread that explains it. MTP is related to the scanning process on the phone. I could have either practiced some patience, but instead I ran the rescan media app. The file magically appeared in Windows Explorer a minute or two later.
i'm having problem transfering .mkv video files from my pc to my phone. Everytime i transfer a file , windows pops up "windows stopped working" and then just closed everything out. I tried to transfer small .mkv video files and samething happened. But if i transfer .mp4 or any other file, it transfered just fine. I reinstalled the samsung drivers a few times and it still doesn't work. It will work through kies but i get no audio. The only option for me is to take my microsd out and transfer the .mkv movies over and put the microsd back in the phone. Anyone knows how to fix this problem?
I have the same problem with this, transferring mkv files, while connected via USB, shows an error.
Any solution for this yet ?

Do you have Kies installed on your pc? You can go in import/export tab, import a mvk file to your phone and see. I did it that way and it worked. I thought I didn't get audio because of Kies but I got no audio when I transfer it to my microsd card either. Maybe the phone doesn't bluray ripped audio or something. But you can try do it throughkKies and see if yours work.
try another file type not video format.. .txt, zip, rar,or something
This is a windows error type for .mkv files. It has to do with the divx codecs trying to render a preview thumbnail for the file. Google mkv divx windows codec transferring problem... it will tell you how to resolve... long story short... divx codec pack needs to be uninstalled. Then reinstall and disable thumbnail preview... worked like a charm for me.

Yeah I did that, checked the box "disable thumbnails" (but somehow I still have thumbnails) and when I transfer it, it tells me the size of the file is too big. A transfer of 100mb .mkv file worked
also tried to rename to .txt .doc and so on, still didnt work

I too had been able to transfer a smaller file... it was the larger ones that crashed. I uninstalled the divx codec AND player, reinstalled and disabled thumbnail preview at the program level...NOT the windows folder view level. If you do it in just the windows folder view level, you will get the same problem. It is tied directly to the divx codec. Hope this helps you out.
Used dropbox to get mkv files to my phone.

Uninstall divx from your pc, it will then transfer fine.
I just put my microsd card in my computer and do it that way
