[Q] will nexus 7 still work with mhl buy screen dissconnected - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

I have a nexus 7 with a broken screen. I also have a couple of android tv boxes (gbox m3 and an ouya). Both the tv boxes are great for playing media but are rubbish at well anything else. as i have a different tablet im now using i was thinking of turning the nexus 7 into a tv box. I was going to use an mhl cable with a micro usb input so utll still charge, then i was going to do a raspberry pi special and build a case out of lego. What i woild like to know is, is this a viable idea, and can i disconnect the screen permenantly and have the.device use the mhl cable as the only screen output. The crack on the screen is sending an a touch to what ever app id showing beneath it

[Q] Feasibility of accessorising toward becoming a netbook

Given that the I9100 allows keyboard, mouse and hdmi output, it would be great to rig it up to perform as a little netbook. So, one would require
a battery-powered LCD with HDMI input,
a seperate power supply (battery with micro USB output) for the HDMI adaptor (seems like that is necessary)
bluetooth keyboard and mouse/trackball/touchpad (since it seems you can't connect both USB and HDMI at the same time),
and possibly a ROM that would take advantage of such a setup.
[EDIT: scouring amazon reveals portable LCDs with HDMI input and many external phone chargers.]
So my question is, what is the feasibility of such a setup, given the necessary hardware? does the necessary hardware exist? has anyone done such a thing already (quick search on google revealed nothing)?
I don't think it would be feasible to do it. You'd need an MHL adapter which people say drains battery even when it's plugged into a socket, and an OTG cable and afaik you can't use both at once. Bluetooth mouse/keyboards would further reduce the battery life.
Not to mention with all of this you'd need a fan of some sort to keep everything cool.
Just buy an ipad or one of the countless droid pads and a nice bluetooth keyboard.. you probably don't want to carry a screen larger than 10 inch with you.

This came today on engadget. Truthfully, I could do without all the fancy projection stuff, I'd much prefer a psion 5 size keyboard dock.

After playing MAME on my tv with the MHL cable for an hour and using a PS3 sixaxis controller over bluetooth, I loose about 15% battery life. Yes its plugged in otherwise it wont work The back got fairly warm after the first 5 mins.
Part of the problem with battery drain when using MHL is the inability to turn the GS2 screen off which is a pain. I was watching a movie on the TV and it was distracting to have the screen mirroring the TV.
If you want a netbook type thing then just get an original Galaxy Tab and a BT keyboard case like this one
This is what I use with my Tab and it works fine.
You could buy a Motorola Atrix ;-))

Is possible to boot img when hdmi connected?

Im wondering if is that possible in galaxy nexus to do something like Motorola Atrix does when connected to a lapdock or desktop dock.
It boots an img, like ubuntu, and uses the phone like the CPU.
If I connect MHL cable and connect the HDMI into a monitor, is it possible to boot an img so I can use it like a desktop dock??
I don't see recovery via mhl cable, only the OS. the OS appears on the hdmi cable while booting up.
doesn't exactly answer your question, but its all I got.
He's talking about web top. The answer is no

Actually I own the Atrix Lapdock and I'm very curious whether or not the display will mirror on the lapdock via the HDMI connection and how much functionality I'll get from connecting to the usb on there also.
I know I won't get webtop but it would be cool if I could get the HDMI out to display on the screen and mouse/keyboard to work via USB....
Has anyone tried this with the Gnexus?
It won't work as it's hdmi or OTG not both in the same time. You need a tablet like an A500 for this as it has a HDMI + usb(otg) on a separate connector.
However, you could still use a chroot ubuntu on hdmi + bluetooth keyboard/mouse ;-)

Got it,
Thanks a lot for the clarification.
Makes sense that the GNexus won't allow OTG and HDMI simultaneously through the Samsung MHL? adapter that I have.
I'll have to pick up a few odd cables in HK to get this tested though - I'm stubborn that way.
Kind of disappointing though as I like the Atrix lapdock, and I would like to get a little more life out of it seeing as the Atrix and Lapdock were quite an investment.
I'll still use that combo for my laptop when traveling, I usually just do emails, basic doc editing, and file transfers etc.

MHL to HD CRT Problem

I want to hook up my Galaxy Nexus to an older HD Sony CRT set, but am having a problem. Hopefully someone here can point me in the right direction so I can go about fixing it.
I hook up my MHL cable to my Galaxy Nexus and plug an HDMI cable to the Sony CRT and the image appears, but then seems to flicker in and out between what I would expect to see and blackness.
The twist is that the picture seems pretty stable as long as I'm touching the screen (the situation is also better when PDK apps are running), so I'm cautiously optimistic this is a software issue concerning the GPU. If anyone has any more specific advice, I'm definitely open to hearing it.
Thanks.
Have you tried playing something else through the HDMI port of the TV? (a DVD player, a PC, etc.) The problem might be with the HDMI cable or the HDMI port itself and not the phone or MHL adapter
A settop box and game console work just fine through the same HDMI port and the same cable, so I'm pretty sure the problem is with the GN. Any ideas?
One bump for the weekend before I let this thread fade away. Hopefully a weekend reader will see this and know what's going on here.
Sounds like a faulty MHL adapter passing intermittent signal problems to the TV.

Yeah, the MHL adapter works great on several other sets, so I was assuming it something to do with the CRT.

Note 10.1 (2014) as a VGA Presentation/Lecturing tool

I'm using the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) to give lectures (using the LectureNotes app to write during the lectures). I need to be able to connect it to typical VGA projector. Thought it might help others to know what accessories worked to do this:
Samsung MHL to HDMI adapter (model ET-H10FAUWE)
HDMI to VGA + Audio Converter (made by Neet, bought on amazon)
Optional: MoKo Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition Case - Ultra Slim Lightweight Smart-shell Stand Case
The MHL to HDMI adapter is great. It did not come with a power supply but takes the same micro usb as the Note. It produces a beautiful image on an HDMI display (tested on both 720p and 1080p) and did not require any settings to make it work. In all cases it has worked without needing a power supply - presumably because it is drawing sufficient power from the hdmi port with the devices I have tried. If a power supply is connected it passes through to the Note (charging it if the power supply gives sufficient current). Connecting the adapter makes no impact on the speed of the device. Unfortunately none of our lecture theatres have hdmi connections.
The HDMI to VGA converter needs to be active (so needs power). The "Neet" one above had good reviews from people who had struggled to make this work with other devices. For me it worked straight out of the box. On a 1024 x 768 device it uses the full height of the display but not the full width: ileaves a narrow black band on the right. It is showing the full tablet image which is slightly distorted on the projector screen. The projector detected the display without problems.
For the case, I wanted one that works upside down in landscape mode so the return button is at the top left. This prevents accidentally closing the app while writing on the tablet. It also means the display cables run away from you. You need to switch off the auto brightness on the display because your hand will cover the front camera as you write and so the display will periodically dim - not that this makes any difference to the projector display but is just a distraction when writing.
The alternative method I tried to project the display was using a VNC server. I bought the VMLite VNC Server app. (The developer was very helpful and responsive.) By connecting this to a computer/laptop with a VGA connection, you can project the screen. However the VNC server significantly slowed down the tablet and made writing on the tablet less than pleasant. So I abandoned that in favour of the hardware method above.
Hope this helps someone - though your mileage may vary. (Sorry about the lack of links - not enough posts it seems so I had to strip them out).
you might also consider getting something like this, I tested it a few months back and it worked fine. Need external power , but besides that worked out of the box. Got recognized as a HDMI adapter.

Standard Micro USB charger, you can use the one that comes with your Note.
No support of the device for Galaxy Note 10.1 2014
Hello, are you sure that it works for this model of tablet? I tested this microUSB-VGA adapter with the Galaxy Note 10.1 ed 2014 and with 2 Sansung smartphones: Galaxy SIII, SIV, and no VGA neither audio signal is produced.
It worked for me with the one l linked. Tested on note 2014 and s3 both needed ext power

Personally I would eliminate the MHL to hdmi adapter and replace that with the netgear PTV 3000. That paired with the OP's hdmi to vga converter would result in a nice wireless solution so you don't have to be physically tied to the projector.

Have you actually tried the PTV3000 with the 2014 Note? Cause I have and it doesn't work properly, specially when streaming video. For a simple powerpoint presentation it's ok, but nothing more

Worked fine for me but YMMV I guess.

I recently bought a Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 to use mostly as a business tool, so that I could run presentations and workshops in various locations. I did quite a lot of research about how to do this and finally selected the correct cable, an 11 pin MHL 2.0 micro USB to HDMI cable with a USB to power adapter. I was very disappointed to find out that I could not get the tablet to display on my Sony Bravia TV, but this setup works fine on other non Sony displays in the house such as the Panasonic one I have in my bedroom. Unfortunately this means I cannot reliably use my new tablet as intended in case I encounter a Sony TV or projector when I'm at a venue or on location. I wish I'd known this before I bought my tablet. A device such as a chromecast dongle isn't much use either since I don't always have a Wi-Fi connection.
I have noted that the OP is using an HDMI to VGA cable - does anybody know if this works on Sony displays or is the Sony/Samsung incompatibility universal?
The PTV3000 miracast device does not require separate WiFi connection after the initial setup. This and the Samsung AllShare Cast dongle worked well for me.

[Q] How to output to TV?

I've been trying to figure out how to mirror my Nexus 7's display to my standard TV. I believe I need a composite cable to do this. Is there any way I can directly output from the Nexus 7 to composite? Or do I have to go Nexus 7 > HDMI > HDMI to Composite Converter > TV? I'm just searching around for the cheapest possible solution, thanks!

Well, I'm searching for a method that does not involve HDMI. That will be most cost efficient and have less cables. I don't have an HDTV so I need a composite cable. Thanks!

Yeah i know what are you trying to do, but actually the only way to get wired audio/video signal is to use the slimport adaptor. (With wireless you would use Miracast but this isn't your case) So in your case you must use the slimport, the hdmi to composite adaptor and i think you should be good.

It would work fine with every device that support Slimport, newer devices do like LG G2, G Pad 8.3, Nexus 5 and so on. But you should check on the specifications of your devices. Before Slimport productors used to support MHL, which is almost the same but it keeps busy the USB port and on display that doesn't support MHL you should even buy an adapter which even needs external power supply.. if you can see on the Analogix Slimport adaptor you got a microUSB and the HDMI, the first is just for using it as the device one and HDMI for streaming. I was reading that Slimport has some limitations about the length of the HDMI cable, something like that it needs to be not longer than 50 centimeters otherwise you'd encounter problems..
Anyway i think that the Slimport adapter that costs just 15 bucks will be great.

Alright, looks like the SlimPort isn't going to work with the Samsung devices. Is there a cheap alternative so I can switch between Nexus 7 and the other devices? Specifically the S3 and S2 (Epic 4G Touch)
Thanks!

I think the only way is to use Wi-Fi Direct/DLNA. If you're gonna cast your screen just for viewing youtube, netflix and stuff like that, you could use the Chromecast, which does that particular job. It can't cast the entire screen but movies, audio (and other DLNA stuff) and compatible apps (you need to see on its webpage) can right now. To cast the entire screen you would need the Miracast technology but i don't know if there are any good dongles on the market that permit to do that as chromecast does. I hope you know what I mean, i'm not a native english speaker
You should take a look at the Chromecast if that can do what you need, or you can see Miracast dongles like this but i can't suggest anything
OK, I'm trying to do the same. I bought a slimport adapter and a HDMI to composite adapter. My N7 works just fine from slimport to HDMI to the TV, but doesn't work when I add the HDMI to composite adapter. However, if I hook my cable box through HDMI to the composite adapter, all works well. So its something from that slimport out of the tablet to the other adapter. What I'm trying to do is get the display mirrored in my van for the kids and the van only has composite inputs. I'm at a loss.
