What Google's sale of Motorola means for us - Droid RAZR M General

I'm sure you all have heard about Lenovo's acquisition of Motorola this afternoon. And I'm also aware that it's too early to tell what exactly this means for us, and support for our device, but I figured I'd start a thread for us to post in when we learn more. Feel free to share any info or links.

I planned on upgrading to the X when my contract is up in September. Hope this doesn't hurt supply. Will be keeping an eye out. Does this mean we can wave goodbye to KitKat for the M though?

No I hadn't noticed. Ugh. I haven't upgraded maps in a while. I'm pretty careful about updating apps unless the reviews are overwhelmingly positive. And even then I back up most apks. Good to know though, thank you.

Nothing to do with version of maps. To do with google search criteria.
I had a Google places site w/ 10 stellar reviews. Google expunged all my reviews. I can do nothing.

I never paid google anything.

I simply hope that somebody will a proper company and working structure to Moto, so they can be more responsive to market needs (eg. sw updates) and also a global sales plan (Europe is missing most of Moto's flagships...)

This is just my opinion and I hope I'm wrong, but yes, I think this means we can kiss goodbye any hopes we had for KitKat on the M. Lenovo doesn't have a good track record when it comes to updates. It's not uncommon for them to release a new device and never update it.
Oh how I wish I had an unlocked bootloader so I could use a 3rd party KitKat.
Although on the bright side, Lenovo's bootloader unlock policy may be less strict. I saw on one Lenovo tablet, unlocking the BL is as simple as typing "fastboot oem unlock" and then choosing yes or no. No decryption codes to enter or anything. That is, if the unlock policy would even change under Lenovo's rule. It didn't really change under Google.

I had read somewhere in the xda portal about this but I do believe it stated that they'd continue support on their current devices (I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure it was there) and if they wouldn't, wouldn't you think they'd take down the android update page by now?

It's probably too soon yet for them to do anything. I've read the purchase of Motorola still needs to get gov't approval, and even after the deal is done, they'll probably stay on current course until top brass at Lenovo says otherwise.

I think Lenovo is going to screw this up and this will be the end of Motorola. Lenovo doesn't have much phone experience, and the designs are terrible.

Has anybody tried Wallet an a stock phone (non-rooted, bootloader still locked, Sprint Optimus G)? Pretty much the first thing I did was root the phone and load clockworkmod so I'm not really sure if it has something to do with that or if it just never worked.

I can't believe Google has evolved so much in a relatively short time and taken up such a huge portion of my life! They have always been one of my favorite companies, and now they may be at the top. I've used their search engine as long as I can remember, of course it's my fave. They give me a free minimalist browser that even my ****ty old HP laptop can run. I bought a Google phone and fell in love with Google's mobile OS, that's free too. Then Google thinks, hey, lets automate search.. And they give me Google Now! Baked in is the best damn mobile voice recognition system I've ever used. I cant believe Google was able to pretty much master the art of talking to a phone, I seriously ask my phone several questions a day, and do it around people with confidence that my phone will understand me and speak back relevant information. It does. Throw in all the different "cloud" storage options they have for free: gmail, contacts, voice, g+ instant upload, drive, etc.. I love Google. I'll never have to enter my contact numbers in a phone again. I have to pause, smile and reflect on that for a second. Or how about freaking satellite pictures of the earth wherever you want, or 360 views from the street. All free again.
Google isn't perfect, sometimes they make me throw my hands up wondering wtf they are thinking, he'll sometimes I complain about it to other XDA members thinking the same things. I know Google makes good money off us (and businesses) through its services.. But from the consumers standpoint, Google offers an almost infinite plethora of options for FREE DOLLARS. And since Google is moving towards all those services being much more tightly integrated, I can't wait to see what they have in store for the future!

Thinking about going to another phone what is better to go to?

Hello.
I am thinking of getting a newer phone and am wanting to know what u think of the droid bionic, thunderbolt, rezound, or lg lucid, this are the best phones under 140$ that is why those ones lol. What do u think is better to spend the money on and use on page plus ? Thanks

You'd have to check on page plus. I'm not sure about that one. Spec wise the Rezound is the best phone on your list.

I would like to point out that our device is pretty darn special in the phone-world. It runs the latest software nearly flawlessly and has stood the test of time.
Take just a moment or two perhaps to consider what it takes to make this phone. Wars are fought to obtain the ore used in the display.
Discarded obsolete electronics is then shipped to Africa where environmental laws are lax.
According to a documentary on YouTube I saw i think from journeyman productions, children and adults alike scavenge the toxic garbage that gets piled in a giant heap right off the barge.
Having no other way to sustain themselves, they have no choice but search for copper and other valuable waste product.
Truly a pitiful existence certainly beyond any ordinary westerners comprehension, their only respite is dulling their hopelessness by sniffing hydrocarbons (mineral spirits, acetone, etc).
Just acknowledge these implications to yourself and ask, do i really need this to be happy? Is it worth it? Just because everyone else is doing it don't make it right.
One love.

More like January or Feb, I'd say or maybe never...at least for the Sprint variant. It isn't in Sprint's interest to push updates unless the other carriers do. Of course Samsung wants to get these updates moving because they want the public to feel they'll be supported if they purchase a Samsung branded device but brand loyalty isn't in Sprints interests unless the brand is Sprint and that of course is usually maintained at the end of a very thin thread as it is.
As for the possibility of receiving the 4.3 update. I'm always excited about OTA updates because updates play a fairly big role in future versions of Android. The more updates there are the more well understood it is what the public wants/needs from future versions because of the broader spectrum of users providing feedback.
For my own personal device...I don't care. I run what I want on my device anyway regardless of whatever Samsung/Sprint/Google push. I don't give a rats ass about having a "pure" Android experience or being the first to get the latest version (no offense to the Nexus fans) either. I want my device dirty and nasty with a big moustache. I don't want be like one of those creeps that hangs around the strip clubs but never pays for a lap dance...I'm in the champaign room and let me tell you there is more going on in there than the song says. Why do you think I'm hanging around here? Trick it, brick it, fix it, trick it and brick it again...that's what it all about.

Yea don't really care because Google separated their core services from the operating system so most of the really great feature are now pushed through Google rather than being a part of a new os version.

Pretty sure that you're missing the point.
The updates that we all are anxious for are system updates that ROM devs can work with, make better ROMs for us all. Definitely worth "complaining" about.
That other thread is about a fault where the phone thinks it needs a software update, but not really, or the update in question is actually not desirable for whatever reason.

HTC Failing / Updates

Quick question that I'm thinking about that you should think about. If HTC goes out of business and fails as a company soon, will that mean we won't potentially get future software updates? Or will they all just be rolled out by Verizon as stock software like the Google Play edition HTC One?

there is a lot of media talk that HTC is failing. But I don't think they are in any danger of going out of business anytime soon. If anything, they'll get bought out by someone.
As much as I don't think that'll happen, I'm fond of the idea of a straight Google experience on this device without having to buy the GPE edition.
Sent from my HTC6500LVW using Tapatalk 4
I'm guessing each one of us already has an experience that speaks to this question (which is a pretty good one, by the way). OK, Motorola...Samsung...LG...none of them have failed yet, but here's my version: bought the Droid 3 in October 2011, and two short months later Motorola announced the D4. WHICH (magically) had just the minimum hardware to get the ICS update. Of course the D3 fell under the bar.
So I've suffered the shame and frustration of running Gingerbread on a phone for two years (fwiw, there *have* been ICS and JB ROMs, but all a bit wonky one way or the other, e.g., camera function), while the world of Android has raced by me. To owners like me -- less than 6 months after buying the beast -- all manufacturer support for the device went stone cold.
To be honest, I don't have any nuggets of wisdom to offer here. The two rays of hope if HTC fails are (1) we get root/unlocked bootloader and the devs save us, or (2) we get the 4.3 update as promised and find peace, happiness, and contentment one version short of Kitkat (which, by the way, doesn't look yet like the kind of leap we've seen from one version to the next -- many of the expected improvements are under the hood). I do not think that Google or Verizon will do any work whatsoever on the phone if HTC drops support for it.
-Matt
