Hi fellow DHD users Just want to know if there are any fellow handcent SMS users here, and i wiould like to know if using handcent sms would cause my battery to drain faster? because is the phone technically receiving double notifications/msgs as the stock messages app is still running? A little concerned with my battery, though handcent is much better than the stock.
Turn the notifications off in the stock sms by going to settings, and uncheck everything in receive notifications.. Hope that helps..

I use handcent. I backed up the stock messaging app with Titanium Backup, then uninstalled it.
I've not noticed faster battery drain since using handcent.
Been using Handcent for a long while now on my Hero with no problems. Just prefer the variety of available options. Will also be using it on my new DHD.
Wouldn't have thought it would drain the battery any faster. Just make sure you disable the notifications in the stock app to avoid duplicate notifications.
I'm (reluctantly) looking into using Handcent because of HTC's last botched update. The screenshots seem to show a rather tacky interface, with odd-looking speech bubbles used to depict conversations.... Is there anyway to switch to the more traditional look?
Handcent all the way and havent really noticed any faster drain. If its there its slight and the benefits out weigh it anyway.
However, since I began using whatsapp I rarely use SMS. Just seems such an ancient idea now
I don't use anything else but handcent, cracking app

Yes you can. In Settings you can change it to look flat, without the bubbles.
Handcent or ChompSMS?

GO SMS is my choice. Very smooth, and nice convo customizations.
Thanks olivierlee.
With all of these 3rd party SMS apps, do they completely replace the Sense SMS? ie, if you open a contact and create a new sms from there, will it open the 3rd party app, or Sense?
And if you open a contact and look at their SMS history, will you see SMSs sent/received using the 3rd party app?
Thanks again.

When you choose to send and SMS from the People app, you'll get to choose which SMS app you want to use. You can also make your choice permanent (this is reversible too).
And in People, the SMS history is shown in the People app itself, and again if you choose to reply from the SMS history list, you'll be given the choice of SMS apps.
I was using handcent sms, I like it, but switched to go sms for a bit. Both are good, go sms might be slightly better, depends what you like. Handcent quick sms thing is pretty cool and the fact it has widgets gives it an advantage.
Thanks for the advice guys... I've installed Handcent now, and it looks excellent. May well stick with it even if HTC ever bother to fix Sense SMS.

I was reluctant because the baloonish look, but you can easily customize its look and make more "professional". Good app in the end.
Cheers

Just giving a try to Go SMS, aint that bad...
EDIT: memory footprint is bigger than handcent's one (35MB Vs. 24MB), despite a lighter interface. Looks like I'll stay on HandCent
Anyone else's GO SMS not showing the sender's name for text messages, just the #? No issues until ICS.
To add to that ive got a gosms notification in my top bar to say ive got a new message. I can see the first few words of the message but when i click on it i cant see the text (i just get the text box to reply) and it doesnt exist in the stock sms app either.
I have this problem as well, also custom themes do not work at all. I've abandoned gosms for handcent for now at least. It's too bad the ICS theme for gosms looks so great too!
i have this aswell, i thought it was just me. Hopefully it will be updated soon.
Yeah - I had the same problem. I've switched to stock Messaging app and SMS Popup out of necessity, but now that I know Handcent works I might try that.
Newbie question, but what advantages do 3rd party SMS apps over the stock app.

Different themes, pop-up notifications with the ability to reply, just far more control in general.

Think iPhone vs. Android in terms of the amount of control one has.

The big feature is SMS pop up - it's super nice. SMS pop up doesn't remove the text from the notification bar, but it does mark it read, which is annoying. Handcent works alright.

the private folder is also extremely useful.

no themes, no pictures and names, no fun ...
GO SMS
Developer is working on update for GO SMS to be compatible with ICS - I have found Chomp to work the best in the mean time
GO SMS for ICS released this morning! Fixed...kind of.
Some of the messages have been linked to the contact, but not all. Can't see the pattern either. Again, only occurs within the app. Quick Reply is fine.
Edit: Just did a clear data. Will see what happens.
Edit: Just received a few SMS. Some are finding the name, some arent'. No pattern that I can see.
I recently tried Swiftkey 3 in order to see if the keyboard allowed the user to see the actual Emoticon when you want to send one in a text. Just as in the stock keyboard, all you actually see is the characters that are used, not the actual smiley. I would like to use some but dont have all the smileys memorized as to what the emoticon actually is and the only way to know is to send the text and see it when its too late. I sent my buddy a kiss yesterday lol. Is there an app or any way to actually see which smiley I choose. I will say the Swiftkey 3 keyboard is just excellent at its predictive typing. I barely spell anything correctly and punch in whatever is close and it turns out perfectly. The stock keyboard changed it to sentences I couldnt even make sense of. Thanks pete
I haven't used anything that allows you to see them. You just learn as you go. You can always text your own number the emoticons though.

I don't think you'll get this from a keyboard, you might have to find a different SMS program that interprets the smiley keys as an actual smiley while you type. I's using GO SMS Pro, by default it doesn't have this function, but there might be an option to activate it. It's free, so you can install it and look for the option.
How does go sms differ from the stock messenger
Sent from my LT28at using Tapatalk 2
Go, along with other third party apps, allows you to customize the look of your inbox via themes, assigning individual contacts a specific text tone, and other features are available as well. I know with Go, you can install the emoji plug in that iPhone uses, but only those with the plug in can see that kind of stuff.
On a side note, now that I think about it, Go has a button within the texting that allows you to see what the emoticons look like before choosing.
Edit: I just checked and the feature you are looking for is indeed available in GO SMS Pro. With the soft keyboard down, there is a smiley face button and it allows you to see what the emoticons look like before choosing. Hope that helps.

K trying it out but I have one issue with go. When you send a pic to someone who doesn't have go its a link to the picture instead of actual picture. Is there a workaround for that
Sent from my LT28at
How are you sending the photo because I haven't had an issue like that.
Sent from my LT28at
There are two ways to send a photo. If you click the soft button that says go and select image, that's when it sends a link to someone without go. If you were to select MMS at the far right instead of go, it sends an actual image via MMS.
Have you been using the go tab to send pictures?

Is anyone able to have a dark theme in the stock messenger? Black/grey background instead of white?
I used the mms photo but sent it to an iphone user. Sending to other androids is fine. Thanks for the suggestions. I am liking it so far much better than stock with a black and gray theme downloaded for free.

You can tell that iPhone person to just get an android phone and solve the problem
Well I'm stumped honestly. You could try emailing the devs

Not a big issue just wondering if non smartphone people will get a link or picture?

Hi,
Currently the HTC lock screen will show notifications for the basic apps: Calendar, Mail, Messages and Phone..
it's really limiting... for instance I thought of using another SMS messaging app, but as soon as i discovered i can't see the messages on the lock screen no more... it really seem like i'm trading off one feature for another.
I really wish I could see Whatsapp noticiations, Gmail etc..
Any mod that enables more types of that? or do i have to replace the lock screen entirely? any thing that looks good as the sense one? thanks.
Would love to have WhatsApp notifications like sms notifications on my locksreen.
A mod would be great

Is there a way or mod to change the chat bubble colors of Samsung's Messages from that God awful green? I heard of Hex Installer, but you have to take on the whole entire theme. I just want to change chat bubble colors ---> and I do NOT want to use a 3red party text messaging app.
Any one know of anything that might be able to do this??

Bump, I would also like to know.
Use MOOD
Far superior to Samsung Messages and that damned Google Message app that used to be good
Try it out, you can customize bubbles, text, backgrounds (per thread!) and much more.

That app (which you didnt name) might be "far superior" than Samsung's Messages, but I have no desire to switch to it, I would prefer to keep using Samsung Messages.
But Thanks anyway

How about naming that app??
It's Mood (or mood messenger). I've used Textra, Google message, and many others. I think this is the most customizable
Anyone know a caller / Messaging combo app that supports dual sim, so it can remember the default sim for each contact.
Also the samsung messaging app, if i copy a text, then i get another window to copy the txt again which is annoying

I get what your saying about the copy. The key is using the s pen. Hold down the button and then select. Only three small dialog box will pop up.

A small update for anyone who cares....
I've moved on to another SMS app called Pulse. It allows texting both on your phone and desktop simultaneously so you can text at work and on the road.. saves my thumbs tbh. Mood is still a little more customizable but pulse is still pretty damned customizable as well and the multi platform access is a current winner for me.
I know no one asked, just thought I'd share.
Cheers, XDA!
