Hi all, I'm new to android, this is my first device.
I have noticed that some of the preinstalled apps - such as Layar and voice search - do appear in the android market but are marked as "uninstalled". Other apps on the other hand, such as google maps, appear normally as "installed" and can be updated as usual by visiting the downloads section in the market.
That said, my question is how do you update those apps that don't appear as "installed"?
Tried re-downloading layar from the market but it didn't replace the original layar app that came with the phone - it created a duplicate instead !

I was able to get Google Play on the unlocked $199 Amazon firephone without rooting. Also was able to get All google apps from play store and change the Launcher.
Only question is that Google maps labels are being overlapped (they are not refreshing) - Is this a known google map side load problem, or I just have a crappy version of the app with the wrong resolution?

What happens when Google pushes an update to the store? Does this stop working?
The overlapping text appears to be caused by Google Maps not detecting the phone's resolution correctly. Can you try an older version of Google Maps?

Extremely old version worked fine (4.4) - Tried all the ICS and up version 8.0 through to current - all have the label problem. Could be Some GPU rendering issue with text (I worked for something similar at my last job) - the website maps look ok from chrome/etc. so it must be in the app - dunno if I should reverse engineer the APK to get the setting corrected - I filed a bug with google to see if it is a known problem with certain devices.
I am using google maps for search and then using nokia maps for navigation currently - so should not be a big problem for now.
If you can get devs to release a version that can toggle ON/OFF the AVD launcher that'd be awesome. It shouldn't take too much time to do.
Meanwhile I guess we'll just have to sideload apps

Don't know if this is relevant because I am not a developer but if you go into settings/applications and parental control/manage applications, then click on google maps and then on clear data, when you go back into google maps there is no overlapping of text initially. After you start zooming out or moving around the map, the overlapping starts back up.
I've noticed that the maps, on first launch, looked fine.
My Gmail will sporadically sync emails. Sometimes, it's instant; other times, it won't try to sync at all.
Found simple workaround for Google Maps If you don't use the voice Navigation feature (needed for California in driving)-
(uninstall Google Maps - optional)
1) Install Chrome and allow it to use location
2) from google app search for address by your voice and get direction card (google now style)
3) tap card (will prompt you to open first time with native Nokia/Here or Chrome or Gmaps)
4) Use Chrome to see the map and you can set chrome as default
Chrome Google map application/page is mostly same functionality as the Jelly bean version of Google maps (Left menu has traffic, transit, bicycle & satellite) only terrain is missing. - You can also bookmark Google map in Chrome and get almost everything you need for directions in regular usage.

I think I have narrowed down the app problem to the system fonts/antialiased fonts used by the stupid fire OS - without rooting I doubt you can change the system font of the phone. If somebody has developer mode -try enabling GPU rendering and see if anything stands out v/s other android devices - I will check on my wife's HTC One M8 later.

Yeah. The Gmail app has problems. It crahes periodically and doesn't want to auto sync. Also, i can't add a second Google account. It says that it can't communicate with Google servers and then gives a message about no network connection which is wrong.
I am on Thor Gapps Rom ( 13.3.2.4 ) rom and got the same issue too!
Google Earth works just fine - So there are 2 workarounds - Google Maps from Chrome and Google Earth
The Waze app also seems OK.
Upload to Fire OS 4.6.1 . the issue gets solved. You week receive an OTA update.

I thought I'd create a thread with a list of LG, Verizon, and misc apps and services that can be safely frozen without any side effects. As more people post with their own apps that were safe to freeze, I will update the OP.
A majority of these can be frozen without root by going to Settings > Application Manager > All > Select the app and click "Disable". However many have disable grayed out and require root and an app such as Titanium Backup to freeze.
Note: Please don't blindly freeze all of these applications, as some you may wish to use, while others have no use for them. This is purely a list of applications and services that can be frozen without FC and other system errors.

Idk what Verizon did this time around, but don't delete the Amazon apps (until I can find com processes). I had to re-kdz flash the Rom and re-root because I kept getting "com.Amazon.mp3" and other errors.

After I removed these, my phone failed to boot, so luckily I kept the rooted 11a image on my phone and flashed it in Download mode. I tried to boot up, but was welcomed to a black screen. Couldn't do anything about it, so I did factory reset. It booted, but I lost everything on my phone. I've been really hesitant about removing any LG* apps. I probably won't til we get recovery and I can make a backup to flash in twrp. That download mode prompt is so sketchy.
EDIT: I updated the list above. I have fully removed all Verizon apps(LGVZW ones don't count for now). They are prefixed with a "*" above and are not required to operate the phone at all. LG designed its interwoven overlay for Android without that crap in mind, so I expected it to work out, and history has shown it true for previous devices. Btw, full removal is not the same as freezing. Frozen apps can still start up. Just check a task manager, and you'll notice a few that won't die. All the ones I listed have been deleted and moved to a sdcard folder called .crap, ~850MB. Those gapps I removed aren't required to use a google account and play store. A lot can be added back through play store correctly as /data apps. The other ones prefixed with "Google" I just don't care for.
Also want to mention that the apps in /system/vendor/overlay should not be removed or frozen.

I removed all of the Amazon apps, (app store, mp3, etc.) and had no issues. I forgot to list that as I uninstalled all the Amazon crap.

Well, I don't see those 3 apps said shouldn't be removed/frozen. I almost panicked before remembering I successfully rebooted several times yesterday. I'm looking in Titanium Backup to see what's frozen, BTW.

I think there is one called advance calling .
I just can't wait for a debloated rom, with all this crap removed .
I'm not super picky about getting everybit of performance, but I just don't know why verizon loves shooting themselves in the foot.
Updated the list with ~10 more apps that are safe to freeze.
It seems like freezing one or more of the 17 apps below causes delays with push retrieval of exchange email (or at least in apps like Mail Wise and Nine where you can disable server settings). I noticed notifications from test emails going from nearly immediate to absent unless I woke the phone or in some cases opened the mail apps. I am tired of testing this at least for now, (it seems to require a reboot between freeze/thaw to cause a change) so narrowing it down further will have to wait.

I have mostly everything in the OP frozen or removed, and I have Exchange setup using the Gmail app and I have no issues. Thanks for the heads up though, if you find out what it is let me know and I'll make a note.

My /system is looking pretty gutted and clean. There are at about 10 apps I still want to try and remove, depending on if they do anything or not. I'm keeping about 20 I know I could remove but prefer to use them like LGCamera(I'll never delete this), Exchange, Calendar, etc. and the few gapps that are required to use google play. I use Nova and Hacker's Keyboard and ti89 app, so I removed the default home and IME(keyboard stuff) and calculator. All of the System Update and FOTA/OTA crap is gone. Everything else is blocked by AFWall, so there's no chance this phone is getting updated or is capable of updating. I'm pretty happy with the work I've done. Phone is still fully capable and very fast and battery efficient with the modifications I've done. The efficiency of my Lollipop 5.1 is approaching Jellybean 4.2/4.3 levels. Besides apps, I've also disabled a lot of services/deamons that run in the background and make your phone feel like garbage. I think I'll eventually share this stuff in an optimization thread.

Thanks for the list, I'll update the OP shortly.
I soft-bricked my phone attempting to remove some of the more serious Verizon system apps. Flashed a recovery kdz and re-rooted to find the true cause. In a slow process of removing 3-5 apps per reboot, I didn't even make it to the Verizon apps. Turns out removing all three Setup apps (LGSetupWizard 4.50.0, Setup Wizard 2.0, Setup Wizard 4.50.0) was enough to soft-brick it again. I am probably going to wait for a recovery before messing around and soft-bricking again.

Removing Shutdown Monitor causes the phone to shut down without an animation.

Can anyone list the files associated with wifi calling? I've taken the time to debloat some items from the lists provided but i think one or more of these files messed with the wifi calling. (i dont use it much, but id like the option to still be there). if anyone knows, can you post the apk and related files on here.

I've been freezing them. I'm not that tight on space and it is good to have them still there in case of.... Something. When a debloated Rom gets out, then I don't mind.
From my LG-G4, Rooted running Stock 5.1
Went through and froze the ones I wanted to... But one of those (I think) made my phone lose the ability to display battery percentage... Anybody know which one?

I am not aware of one that would do that, but if you unfreeze them one by and one and find one that did it, let me know and I'll update the OP!

Sorry I was being dumb. I installed a module from xposed that changed that. My bad!
Here are some screenshots of my disabled apps list.
So far I have been running with improved battery life and performance.
If you try this with your phone please let me know your results.
List of apps I uninstalled:
1. Android Pay (because it doesn't support my bank)
2. Chrome ( I use Firefox because I hate ads & tracking cookies)
3. Device Unlock
4. Docs
5. Google Play Movies & TV
6. Google Play Music
7. Google Play Newstand
8. Hangouts
9. Sheets
10. Slides
11. T-Mobile Name ID

I only have Calendar, Device Unlock, Gmail, Hangouts, Lookout, Music, and Name ID disabled. The other LG apps I uninstalled.
So you can disable stock calendar on tmobile version?
god I need to take a few minutes & go through & do this for mine. All of the LG stuff needs to go, but I have to admit I love Name ID & will wait to kill the unlock app till my 40 days is up & I unlock mine.
I despise the tmobile app. The iOS version is leaps and bounds better and actually useful.

Why freeze or uninstall device unlock?
I'm not in the US so I don't need a lot of the apps that came with this phone - the others I have disabled are apps I don't really want active on my phone or apps that I don't use...
I've disabled:
Android Pay (doesn't work where I am)
Chrome (I use Orfox or Firefox)

I've removed a lot of permissions on most of the apps that I still use with App Ops, and I have also disabled background data on 99% of these apps + I have installed DroFirewall (this seems to be the firewall that works best on this phone in my experience) to block internet access for all the apps that have no business going online.
I love this phone, and now that I have root I can finally use it as I want. (I used to have the F700K and was never able to root it so I ditched it and went for the H830 as root is a must have for me,)

Hi all,
i was working on a guide on the vast amount of packages that we find already installed on EMUI by default and safe to remove because i'm sure that it would be useful for users like me, users that doesn't like to have space occupied on internal storage by bloat software, space that could be useful for many other things. So i decided to make a list with all the packages and their relative details about how each package listed here works on system, in way to advice and let you take the final choice by yourself about what to do with a package, remove it or not.
The first thing that i say, is BACKUP. Make always a TWRP backup, before doing everything that you don't clearly know. It's a safety reason, you MUST have a valid and clean backup before trying to remove packages or system apps, because the danger is always behind the corner. I say this for experience :silly:
For making things easier, i'll colour in red packages that you MUST NOT remove, because they're fundamentals for the correct execution of the OS, or they're an important system app. Keep an eye of regard and be careful about orange packages; some files are removable because they provide only functions not fundamental to the normal usage of the OS, but for other apps like File Manager, Calendar app, ecc. you'll have to provide a valid substitute for the app in way to have a workaround for replicate that function again, and so, pay caution and be aware. Green packages are safe to remove, because they won't provoke incompatibilities or other stuff that could compromise the OS. Last, cyan packages are packages which i'm still doubtful about, so i'll look for more details related when i'll have time. I won't give any suggestion about what to do with those until more will be known about, so be careful when you're deciding what you'll do with a package listed in cyan; it could be fundamental, or it couldn't. You take the decision. Packages will be listed in alphabetic order. You can use the method that you prefer to remove the app/package; there are many apps for debloating, but not everyone will work for real on every app by what i saw by my experience. **NOTE that some apps or packages may vary depending on different EMUI build numbers, so you couldn't be able find all of the packages listed here, like NFC services for example. Most of these should be present anyway** If this should happen, try another app. Personally, i reccomend Titanium Backup, but even ADB method is an excellent manner to remove this files. Instructions on how to do this are here, in this XDA article https://www.xda-developers.com/uninstall-carrier-oem-bloatware-without-root-access/ - Thanks to Doug Lynch for the realization of it. However, following this guide in 10-20 minutes you'll be able to regain something around 600-700 MB of free space, so courage and let's remove useless services and stuff!
The list will be updated when an explanation of a package will be given, when more details will be provided about. Anyway feel free to suggest me whatever you'd like to see inserted in this list and a reason that explains why it would be safe or not to remove, other than appreciated to increase my packages knowledge i'll put it here for other users.
*DISCLAIMER*
I am NOT responsable for every kind of bricks or damages to the OS that your phone could suffer after removing system packages or apps, and even if always willing on helping users in need, i'm NOT obblied to do it. So i please and i recommend EVERYONE to be EXTREMELY careful when you're on a package that you don't know how it acts on system, and i encourage everyone on taking ALWAYS a TWRP backup before doing something, or removing everything that could compromise the execution of the OS. Make things with brain, not with impulsive and senseless thoughts
NOTE - Most of the times, in the folder containing the apk of the app/package that you'll be removing, you'll find a folder named "oat" containg some ODEX files related to the app. Sometimes their weight is a bunch of KBs, while other times they could weight even 10MB. If you're removing the app/package, remember to delete the ODEX file too!

com.android.bips - Built-in Print Service. Safe to remove.
com.android.blockednumber - Blocked numbers feature.
com.android.bluetooth - Core of Bluetooth services.
com.android.bluetoothmidiservice - Provides classes for sending and receiving messages using the MIDI event protocol over Bluetooth LE.
com.android.calculator2 - Stock calculator app.

com.android.captiveportallogin - This consists in a web page that the user of a public access network is obliged to view and interect with, before access is granted. Like public Wi-Fi hotspots that prompts you with an user and password login.

Thanks guys, other infos are coming very soon... oh yeah, I've noticed that the yellow i had choose is a lil' bit too bright, and makes the packages names almost impossible to read. I'll change it in a darker one next time I'll update the guide
After a thread re-organization, i've decided to make still unknown packages cyan coloured, other than orange; orange from now on will substitute the yellow colour, since i retain it more inherent to a "handle with care" package, and overall because that yellow tonality was almost unreadable. Updates are incoming in week!

Thanks man, gosh I'm a little bit late about updating this guide but actually I've only found 3-4 other packages considerable as bloatware (superfluous services never used if not interested) I'd like to update with even more stuff. There's an important note that i must write at the top of the guide, overall; if you update with the biggest update package, usually around 2,47GB, all the bloat stuff and services will be re-added to the OS; this means that for we rooted users, that must rely on this package to correctly update by huawei recovery, all the stuff will have to be removed again. Following this guide anyway, in 10-20 minutes you'll regain something around 600-700 MB of free space (as in my case: a non debloated backup occupy 5,40GB of space - a debloated one takes 4,90GB instead)

I'm keeping the app "frozen" using Titanium backup and I noticed, even with Full ota update, they're not re-added back.

Of course, because if frozen, the app isn't removed at all. It is shut off, but its space occupied on memory is still there. Simply the update won't add it again because it isn't missing. But i prefer to eradicate those at all instead of frozing it.

I've settled just not seeing the app in the drawer (f.e. two "calculators"), thing that upset me the most.
I know free space isn't earned, but since updates come out often, it'd be annoying to remove the bloats every time.
I really looking forward to have a fully workink custom ROM, but idk if that would ever be realistic.... what do you think?

To me it's natural by now, i debloat after every update, it takes just 10 minutes but hey i speak for myself. About custom ROMs, with the help of Project Treble in Android Oreo, things could get much easier. But i don't know the state of development about future bug-free roms. Devs can surely say something more about this.

Hello,
There are different methods to remove apps, some of them needing root, some others not needing it.
You can remove apps using adb without root using this tutorial : https://www.xda-developers.com/uninstall-carrier-oem-bloatware-without-root-access/
However, as it is said, be careful with what you remove...

I didn't pointed a method to remove bloatware Eulmiac, i just suggested apps like Titanium Backup to remove the easily removable apps, but for other apps/packages you'll absolutely need a root explorer like MiXplorer.
I listed packages and how they affects the system, in way to let you take the final decision about what to do with the app in question.
Sorry for the late answer, I'm pretty busy lately but i have achieved some nice tips to add to this guide to remove other 300-400MB of bloatware I'll update it as I'll be able to.

Added a changelog in OP; added other 4 new packages to the list; at the bottom of the guide, you'll find the paths that usually contains bloatware, some related to your vendor; added a voice about ODEX files also.
use sd maid to remove listed files.
a TWRP flashable debloater script would do the job a lot easier.

Yeah surely man, i don't know how to write a script but even if I would, I'd one that would match my own needs. Maybe someone else would like to keep Google Play Music instead of removing it, and so, every single user would have to write his own script based on personal intentions...

Surely stock music app (Huawei's one, to be clear) would be removed completely from the device, and other related menus or interfaces like the one that you can see while you choose a tune from settings menu, or while you set a ringtone could be unavailable. But you could always use stock File Manager interface (or other file manager apps) to set it without problems. Backup and try!
