Kernel for stock kitkat 4.4.2? - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

Hi all, today I unlocked boot loader and rooted my nexus 7 2013 WiFi. At the moment I am sticking to stock ROM until I get more internet data from my ISP then I can flash a custom ROM.
Anyway what kernel would you recommended for stock KitKat 4.4.2 ROM in the mean time, or is it not worth changing and I'm better just waiting to flash custom ROM+kernel?
I was hoping for a more performance based one and would like to overclock both CPU and GPU, of course performance+battery contradict each other but if I could also have good-very good battery life and faster performance then even better.
Also what apps are you using for over clocking CPU/GPU?
Please suggest thanks

Best ROM/kernel threads are frowned upon at XDA.
As far as overclocking app, I use Tasker. I use it for setting the kernel tunables also.

I use elementalx with stock. Great performance and battery life.

Can I use stock GB Rom and Doom Kernel?

Hi guys! I just bought an Arc S, and it's totally awesome. BUT, even if I like the design of the stock ROM, it really can be improved. I always have around 60 mb of free RAM, and you can imagine the result
May I use doom kernel ( or any other kernel ) without flashing a new rom? Would I have improvements? Do I get more free ram?
Thanks in advance, I'm trying to learn everything I can about modding this phone, I had a Motorola and I spent the last months tweaking it, now it's time to start all over
If you've unlocked the bootloader, yes. Any kernel thread OP will advise what version of android the kernel will support, or if it's specifically for a certain rom(i.e. MIUI/CyanogenMod roms). Generally, custom kernels improve performance and add features not available in the stock rom such as call recording, various schedulers, overclocking and so on. Battery life tends to be better with the stock kernels though.
thanks! and specifically, if I want to stay ( for now ) with stock rom 2.3.4 which kernel would you suggest me to try? i'd like one with smartassv2 governor, i heard it's pretty good
Doomkernel is your best bet there, tbh.

Kernels Help

Hi all,
I am fairly new to the whole flashing kernels thing. I was looking through the Android Development threads and I saw the KT kernel and the IX kernel. I wanted to flash either of these kernels just for the improved battery life (from stock). Here are some of my questions:
1. What is the main reason to flash a new kernel.
2. Once I flash the kernel, What is a governed and do I need to constantly change it or set values? (asking cause I see others doing this)
3. Once I flash, lets say I want to go back to stock kernel, how can I do this?
4. Will I really get better battery life, or is it just for those who currently have horrible battery life.
5. Would it speed up the phone by any chance, reduce any lag?
Thanks in advance for helping!

thats an amazing link thanks for posting that i was wondering the same thing
but can someone tell us noobs the main reason for updating your kernel like Kt's kernel?

Well, I personally use KT's kernel for a few reasons: his Ktoonservative governor which is great for battery life yet equally responsive, the ability to undervolt to maximize battery and a cool running device, and the ROW scheduler which offers me superior performance.

1. Some people flash a different kernel so they can overclock and under-volt. Also it may make the phone a bit snappier and get better battery life.
2. You don't need to constantly change the governor. You can try one for a few days and see how it goes. If youd like to experiment then you can try another to see if its any better/worse.
3. Depending on your ROM. Sometimes you can just boot in to recovery and re-flash the kernel you want. Again it depends on what kernel you flash to.
4.This is a tough one. Kernels act differently on each phone. You would need to try it out for yourself. When you flash a kernel it is suggested you give it a good 3 full battery cycles to really see how battery life is.
5. Yes, it may speed up the phone responsiveness a little. But again each phone reacts differently to each kernel.
The ability to control vibration, and the wide variety of i/o sched and govs is a main reason why I choose KT over any other kernel
still how can i revert
lets say i use kt and want to go back to stock kernel, how do i do this?

[Q] Custom Kernel for the Stock 4.2.2 Rom

Just update to Takju 4.2.2 with the stock kernel. Functions are limited with the stock kernel. Any recommedations of which custom kernels that are battery friendly, overclocking possiblility and/or better wifi reception?

ak kernal, fraco is also a great option, but i personally prefer ak.
leanKernel
Just flashed stock 4.2.2 and flahsed franco r365. Seems that the battery is better than before. I will report in the next days.

All kernels aim to give better battery life while not sacrificing too much performance.
Kernels need a little while to settle down so try one out and give it a day before passing judgment and if it doesn't give desired results for your rom and device then try another.
AK Kernel 4.2.2

I've had a ton of success with AK kernels. Morfic and LeanKernel too, but lately the AK ones seem the best for me. I run a custom ROM tho, and I've seen that a lot of folks really like Morfic on stock 4.2.2.
If you're on VZW or Sprint, you may have to flash the GPU binaries to be able to install a true 4.2.2 kernel, otherwise you're phone wont boot and you'll have to reflash a 4.2.1 kernel to get back up and running.
I know Tiny (he's got a great kernel too) posted this flashable binary, in case this helps. Here's the post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=38034158&postcount=22

[Q] lupus v10 with stock 587 rom

Hi
I have a question for what I did not find a straightforward answer;
Some back story: I have an Xperia Arc S with stock .587 rom, I wanted to unlock it so I payed on a site to unlock it with point test {if this is the correct way to say it}, the simlock was removed 'yaay' and they also unlocked the bootloader. so a few days back I wanted to play around with kernels and roms, tried lupus with xperia hd 3.0.2, I didn't like it, don't ask why, and I wanted to return to stock, I messed up, soft bricked the phone...long story short, today I resolved the problem and I managed to install the stock rom again.
TL;DR; Can you use the Arc S stock rom with Lupus v10 kernel ? and does anybody have any experience with it ? worth ?
Thank you
If you have any other kernel suggestion that would come in handy too :fingers-crossed:
Greetings from Hungary.

As an old Arc S user, I'll tell from my own experiences..
Using Lupus or any custom made kernels that are made with the purpose to give you overclock options and alternative CPU Governors on stock & non-rooted ROM.. It isn't worth it, because you will not see any difference in performance.
Tweak and debloat .587 ROM in case you are going to use Lupus kernel, I am saying.

Sound interesting, I mean I don't really care about performance, that much, the only thing that I noticed with Lupus kernel {or I guess whatever kernel} is the battery life increase.
I'm still thinking and searching the forum to find a good answer, I have no problem with the stock kernel + rom, but if a custom kernel would give the same performance + better battery life that would definitely help
ps I have no idea how to tweak and debloat[ i don't even know what that is] :silly:

Well, battery life can increase if you are using the right CPU governor and I/O Schelduer (spelling?).
But the increase in your prefered option (BATTERY LIFE) isn't that big on an extended functionality custom kernel, I think, on stock & bloatwared ROM. It can be even worse.. Some battery tweaks in build.prop and some init.d power saving tweaks / scripts can help perhaps.
Best is to try it yourself! Be aware of partial wakelocks, Sony got some bad behaviour with applications that wakes up your Arc S..

[Q] Stability and Performance focused ROM for the 2013 Nexus 7

Hi, I am looking for a ROM that is stable and faster than stock. What ROM would be the best for this? I haven't really tried ROMs since I last put Cyanogenmod on my CDMA HTC Hero, so I don't have the best idea of what's out there and what works. I also searched "performance ROM" just to make sure this hadn't been asked recently.
I'm running TWRP and the latest SuperSU, if that matters.

There won't be a faster Rom. What you can try is flash a kernel that supports overclocking. Although, imho, you won't be blown away by the increased performance, it's all marginal.
Stock Rom is already very fast. Other Roms will also be very fast. It's usually a matter of options that the custom Roms offer. You can tweak more. But will they have a noticeable performance improvement, I think not. YMMV obviously

Ah, thank you. I had such a massive performance jump from 1.6 to 2.2 and then 2.2 to 2.3 Cyanogenmod on my Hero that I thought I might get something similar out of a custom ROM again.

Simply make a Nandroid of your current Rom and experiment like crazy
If you find a custom Rom that blows you away: keep using it. If you don't find any advantages or worse: restore Nandroid :good:
Custom ROM makes only sense if you want special functions / features of a specific ROM.
Many special features can also be activated in stock ROM by apps like Xposed, GMD apps etc.
So most probably a custom ROM is unnecessary. Just look for a good kernel (Franco, Elementalx, Faux...) if you want added performance, battery life or filesystem support.
