Not sure if anyone else has tried this but what my goal is is to artificially max out my monthly data usage.
I have 5 lines on my plan and am just trying to stop this line. I have just less than a year left on my plan. A T-Mobile rep advised me that if 2 consecutive months my data usage is excessive, they said past 5gb's, my line would be canceled with no etf.
So what i'm trying to do is figure out a way to have my phone constantly streaming, right now at work what i've done is leave it plugged in and stream netflix movies... I'm only at about 4 gigs right now of usage.
Any better way to go about this? Thanks!

That's about it, all you can do is keep the data stream active. Personally, I'd double up; if you have room on your sdcard, start a download of a large file and then start a Netflix stream. The download will continue in the background while you're streaming the movie.

Try to find a torrent app for android and just download and seed/share the files u down loaded .. since its seeding the data usage should be faster.. fyi put your phone on a damp cold rag to keep your battery cool ..( not to wet not to dry)

I have never approached the 2gb warning before but I just moved and have had my computer tethered and gone over 8 gb in 7 days. (A lot of video streaming)
Will Sprint give the boot if this continues?
I only know of them booting people who are using Verizon PRLs and roaming over like 50gb a day. And I've been watching for years.

If Sprint determines that you are tethering without a tethering plan, there is a chance you might get the boot.
There a morons that have posted here that they tethered their Xboxes and played games over the network and used dozens of gigs of data (without even paying for the 5GB tethering plan), and then were offended when Sprint called them on it.
Although you are probably safe as long as you aren't roaming or downloading torrents.

Roam a lot on verizon PRLs and or tether to consoles and streaming HD quality videos. Usually happens when u get > 10 gigs of tethering using obvious tools (aforementioned).
You could easily use 8gb in 7 days on just your phone streaming music and watching videos for part of each day. If you start using 8gb a day for extended time periods then you might be suspect.
Ok, so from what you have said, I could be ok.
I am tethering without a tethering plan however...and 5gb of tethering isn't going to work, because most of the data goes to Netflix...
I'm not trying to get the boot, I have no problem with Sprint or their service.
Do they give a warning or just tell me I have no service anymore?
My buddy who works for Time Warner told me that ISP/carriers cant monitor individual data legally so they don't know where it is going just that a the amount being used. At this point I wouldn't worry about it. Sometimes they call or send a warning letter but that would be months down the road. The call would be along the lines of Mr. ideseth I see you have been using a lot of data lately. And your reply would be yes I am really enjoying this unlimited package thanks for checking in with me.
Although tethering without a sprint package IS against the terms of use as long as you are not roaming you shouldnt have anything to worry about. Sprint knows customers use their phone to use netflix, there is an android application, its the same amount of data usage either way, thats expected usage. ENJOY YOUR TRULY UNLIMITED DATA WITH SPRINT!
p.s. I am switching from sprint to t-mobile due to poor service LOL :silly:
They my not know what the hell you're doing but they sure as hell know what ports are being used. Phones do not connect to the ports that consoles / high def streaming services connect to. Using the info on where you're connecting to; they can make a very accurate educated guess on what you're doing and give you the "warning letter" before they boot you.

The 2gb warning that you see on your phone i believe is just a stock warning for data usage regardless of your carrier.
your good I've gotten up to about 15gb in one month, although i wasn't tethering just using a lot of data. But i don't think they'll watch you that much because I've had several months upwards of 10gbs. never any warnings or letters..

You'll be fine I tether for work everyday, andbhave been for over 2 years. The only choices for internet at my house are dial-up, satellite or 3g, we don't have cable or fios out here in the sticks and dial-up and satellite are both too slow, and satellite is unreliable during storms, and in Florida we get alot of storms in the summer months. Between my 4 lines on my account we use anywhere between 150-250gbs of data a month. The line I tether from averages 80+GB a month and I make maybe 2 calls and a handful of texts from it occasionally, its line is almost entirely data use and I've never gotten a call or letter, but I very rarely use any roaming unless a tower is down. I've been with sprint for almost 15 years or so and have been eating their data for breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as all my snacks in between for as long as I can remember. As the phones have gotten better my data use has increased. Right now on my personal line I'm at ~73gb and just a little past halfway thru my billing cycle this month. My wife's line is at ~41gb, my work line which is the one I tether my whole house from is at ~97gb and the 4th line which my dad uses is around 60gb so far this month. Sprint only really cares about roaming data cuz they pay a pretty penny to whoever's tower you're roaming on vs. their own network which costs them a few tenths of a cent per GB for you to use. They make a few thousand percent profit on in network data. If you used 10 GB of data a month their cost to profit ratio would be a $1.50 cost to $8.50 profit just from your premium data charge, plus the over and above profit they make off of your actual plan. Its surprisingly cheap for them to provide in network data, but roaming data they pay whoever the tower is leased from around 15ยข per GB versus about .15 of a cent per gb of in network data

Just buy the straight talk SIM, and put it in your note 1 or 2 and your good to go

I had a note 1 and a sgs3 that WASNT unlocked and it worked fine with st. I now have the n7100 and it also works fine. Go to www.straighttalk.com and order the AT&T compatible sim. When you get it in go back to the website and activate it and port your number.

Ugh... I want to make the jump so bad from my Droid 3 but a hearty ETF stands in my way. I have the AT&T SIM card just decided if I'm going to get the international or wait for the US release...and pay the ETF.
Does it support the 4G rated speeds on AT&T or other networks?

No LTE but does support HSPA+. 8Mbps down and 1Mbps up is the fastest I saw in my area. Don't expect unlimited data, 2GB seems to be the consensus on the ATT sim.

And be sure to port your number at the time of activation. I thought it was a two-step process and activated WITHOUT porting and they had to send me a new SIM, as its only good for 1 activation. BUT the good news is, they quickly answered my call & resolved my issue hassle free...i was worried having dealt with Cricket in the past, but this Straight Talk is the real deal, been happy as a clam for 5 mos with them. It was only me on the plan so my savings from AT&T is like $70.00 a mo, but the way i see it, Straight Talk paid for my Galaxy Note II with money leftover ST: $45x24 mos=$1080.00 + $725.00 cost of phone = $1805.00 ATT: $120x24=$2880.00 +$299 Cost of phone = 3099.00 Savings $1294.00
If you can give up LTE (i could) and walk-in service its a no brainer oh yeah - and 15.00 for activation, don't wanna redo all the math but just deduct $15 from total savings : )
Since G-Note II takes micro-sim and had to take a deep breath when i put the SIM in the cutter (purchased from e-bay $5.00) becuase if i had screwed it up i would had to wait for a new SIM but it went off without a hitch. As soon as i keyed in the APN of my Samsung Infuse, i had my lil H+ signal and was good to go....
Also, just a heads up to anyone who thinks 2 GB (approx 100MB a day) is not enough data, for me, i have 3 G watchdog set to disable data at 80% for 100MB a day and it has never come close to the limit... i use my internet on phone to search about 50 to 60 sites a day... One word of caution tho, if you land on a page that "automatically plays a video ad", you need to pause that sucker because that alone with eat up approx 1MB for each second or so it plays. All those ads have a pause button, but you have to hover over the ad to get it to appear.... : )

Honestly they vary between 2MB and 6MB down, i never pay attn to up, but completely consistant connection. In the 5 mos i ve had them, never once have i had data connection drop. Since streaming & downloading videos isn't permitted anyway, just unlimited site surfing, those speeds are more than ample....
Many ppl don't realize if you select an AT&T Sim, Straight Talk will only only use AT&T towers, (At&t allows them to use them for a cost and then Straight Talk re-harvests them out, so to speak....) so if AT&T's coverage is good in ur area and you just need internet for surfing and emails and maybe maintaining your Instagram acct, you're golden : )
It's funny op opened this thread, I ordered my straight talk micro SIM card two days ago and it'll arrive tomorrow. I'm so excited to leave crappy gophone!

Two gigs is more than enough for me. On AT&T gophone, I used 2 gigs in a little over 3 months doing heavy use ( for my use its heavy at least). People don't realize, forums like tapatalk and apps don't use that much data. When u do that you're good to go.
I tried it with my brother's sim and the HSPA was pretty fast but no LTE.

I use wayy too much data....too much YouTube and Google Currents reading stacks my usage up pretty high. So, unfortunately I cannot dig on 2GB a month...I use that in like 4 days. I thought they had an unlimited data plan at $45 a month?

Well apparently that unlimited data is really 2gigs of data. Personally that's more than I can use, there's wifi everywhere I go (work, home, Starbucks you name it).

The devil is in the details...lol Its actually "unlimited web", not unlimited data (in other words no downloading videos or streaming, but doing everything else (web searches, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, gmail etc) to your hearts content shouldn't be a problem

2GB really can be a lot more than MOST ppl need which is why they are doing so well. Cutting a cell phone bill in half as they advertise is worth it to a lot of ppl to reign in their data consumption. I know for me i just wait till i'm on wi-fi to upload or watch my vids and i'm good.
And not having to deal with a cell phone company everrrrrrrr is awesome. I just have S.T. on autopay and 3G Data Watchdog installed set with a DAILY 100MB limit to alert me when i reach 75% (in 5 months i have never reached that limit) and i never think about either one : )
So check this out.... I am an AT&T user and back when the HTC HD2 came out for T-Mobile I bought it from a friend when they signed up for a new contract. Got an unlock code from Ebay and have been using it for the past 2 years without having to have a data plan, never got added automatically to my plan like i have heard happen to others? And I'm wondering why? Is it possibly cuz its a T-Mobile phone? Or is it cuz I still have an old "Cingular" SIM card? I am curious about this because right now, Wally World has a special sale on the phone at $249, plus a $100 gift card, which will bring the phone down to $150 basically, so a pretty damn good deal for a phone just out on the market. And I'm plan on getting it this week, I was wondering if any of you would be able to tell me if at some point if i was able to get a T-Mobile version of the Samsung Note 2 if i could slip my SIM card into it and then be able to cancel my DATA plan, if i told them i went back to a Motorola Razr or something, which worked when i got my HD2? Or will AT&T be able to see that i have a smartphone? Is it the newer smaller SIM card, that will tell AT&T that I have a smartphone, or will the phone it self be what sends info to the servers or whatever that tells AT&T I have a smartphone? Or do you think this method of getting a T-Mobile phone and using an AT&T SIM card will work and I won't get stuck with a DATA plan? Everywhere I go has Wi-Fi so I have no need for the Data plan it will be going to waste.

Yep, I am eligible for an upgrade, haven't upgraded in a few years or so... Just wondering if the new micro sim cards or the newer phone will alert at&t that i am using a smart phone, or if i will be able to do the same thing i did last time, by getting a tmobile phone with at&t service and not be required to have a data plan, if they don't know that i'm using a smart phone...?

If you bring a phone to T-Mobile, they won't force a data plan on you. I'm assuming The Dark Side [AT&T] is the same.
If you use an upgrade, a 2GB Data Plan is required, and they will not let you remove your data afterwards. T-Mobile is weird like that.

LOL, nice, but no, I'm saying I don't have any internet on my phone, only had the Wi-Fi, therefore wasn't having to pay for a data plan, because i wasn't required to have one since they didn't know i had a smart phone, just the regular cost of having a calling plan... I'm hoping it's something to do with the IMEI, if it isn't in the system, hopefully they won't know what phone i'm using...

Yeah AT&T requires you to have an added Data Plan also with any smartphone, but I don't need it, its a waste of money for me, I have Wi-Fi most of the places I go, and don't need to be connected to the net 24/7 ...lol But, I'm hoping I can get a Tmobile Note 2 and use it for a while, then tell them I went back to my Razr and hopefully be able to drop the data part of the plan, but i don't know if i could do that until the new contract is over

No, originally it was just an impulse buy, cuz its such a kick ass phone...lol I would prefer just to buy a Tmobile version somewhere and use it on AT&T and hopefully not be required to have a data plan, but since the phone is so new, i'm probably not going to find one anywhere, less than $400 even on Ebay. So what I was thinking is, just upgrade my current AT&T plan to a new 2 year agreement, and get the phone for $250, plus the $100 gift card from Wally World, and that basically brings the price down to $150, and then possibly selling or trading the phone and getting a Tmobile version, so i can cancel the internet data plan. But, i'm not sure i could do that, i don't know if the contract terms say I'm required to keep the data part, even if i don't have a smartphone anymore say after a few months or year or so. Like for example, if I sign a new 2 year agreement, and after a couple of months, tell them I went back to a Razr phone, if i can drop the data, but i'm still on the 2 year agreement. And hopefully the Tmobile version phone won't be able to be detected so i'm not automatically enrolled into the data plan again....?
I don't get it. If you just want a feature phone then just get an feature phone. There are tablets that uses WiFi only just bigger. Then you can get a free basic phone for texting and calls only. Or get a feature phone for almost free for text, calling, and listening to your music. At this point PPCs (Pocket Personal Computers) aka "Smartphones", like Galaxy Note 2, are way too much for the purposes that you are wanting to use them for.
To make PPC aka "smartphones" truly mobile they need to be connected to the Internet at all times. That is why cellular data radio services is so important for these PPC devices. They are truly cellular mobile computers. That is why I coined them as CPPC (Cellular Pocket Personal Computer) and MPPC (Mobile Pocket Personal Computer).
MPPC (Mobile Pocket Personal Computer) is the best description of what these devices are. They are mobile in terms that you are always connected on the go with these devices. They fit in your pocket (at least your big pocket). They are very personal in the way you use them. And they are truly computers. I'm not trying to buy the Galaxy Note 2 outright, I plan on going to Walmart sometime this week and upgrading my contract and getting the Note 2 for $249, and then on top of that Walmart will throw in a $100 gift card, that you can use on anything at the store, probably even gas at the Murphy USA station so basically, that brings the price of the phone down to $150.... I don't know of any decent tablet anywhere near that price. This phone is basically a phone and tablet all in one, I don't want to be carrying multiple devices around with me, a big 7" or 10" tablet everywhere I go everyday, plus my cell phone. I'm looking for an all in once device, and this is pretty much it. Most of the places I go have Wi-Fi, so I wouldn't, (and haven't), even hardly use(d) any data. And the extra, $15, $20 or $30 a month for a data plan could be used to help pay for other bills. I can still use the phone to its full potential without having a data plan... Except when I'm driving down the highway and I'm lost and need GPS? ...lol But, I still have my HD2 with tomtom on it, or eventually I might sell it and get a dedicated GPS, or use google navigation, I think I heard they have an option to download offline maps. If I'm bored waiting on my oil to get changed in my car somewhere, and want to watch a YouTube video, sure I'll be SOL if they don't have a public Wi-Fi, but I'll have plenty of apps and games to keep me entertained while I wait...lol IF I ever have an absolute need to use, mobile data, its a pay-per-use feature, per MB I think so I'll still have that, it just won't be a set monthly price.
Att requires you to keep a data plan for 6 months after an upgrade.
Here is what I would do:
If you upgrade then switch to the t-mo version, call att when you switch and tell them you are using a t mobile dumb phone and want your data removed. They may do it if its been 6 months since your upgrade. If they wont remove data completely, tell them you want the $10 media net package. It is unlimited and you will get hspa+ if your phone allows for it. That way you have data if you ever need it, and its cheap.
I used the $10 plan with my gsm razr, but switched back to unlimited so I wouldnt lose it. I know the $10 plan works for phones not in att's system.

If you upgrade then switch to the t-mo version, call att when you switch and tell them you are using a t mobile dumb phone and want your data removed. Exactly, thanks for the info, helps a lot. That is exactly what I planned to do, just wasn't for sure on how long I would have to keep the mobile data plan. So $150, plus $15 a month for the minimum plan, for 6 months = $240 total, phone and mobile data.... not too bad...

To use Google Maps you will need Internet connection so that the device can download the maps while you are traveling. Yes you can do that off line. But the Google Maps function the best when you are connected. Just a good example of so many things within these devices that Must be connected at all times for.
Why not check out lower end Android devices or feature phones with these features? They will cost you even less. Much less.
Again, Galaxy Note 2 is way too much of a professional device than what you are look for. So much of Galaxy Note 2 will be wasted. And the complexity of Galaxy Note 2 is not going to make you happy in the long run.
Warning - Galaxy Note 2 WILL use your cellular data rather you want it to or not. Again, this is the nature of these devices. Everything from email, system backing up, your contacts gets checked and backup, any social apps WILL use your data in the background, Google PlayStore in check for updates, Google Maps in getting new maps (as you travel) and adding location accuracy (with cellular towers), Google Street View in downloading the street view for you, Calendar will check Google and update, free apps that have ads will download the ads, some apps will be running in the background checking stuff online and downloading from online, and so much more WILL be using your Cellular data throughout the day and night on everyday.
When it comes to free apps you can buy the paid ad-free apps. But by the time you do that with all apps you will end up spending as much as it would if you just get the $30.00 per month unlimited data plan. I know that because I hate ads so much that I spend money for the paid ad-free apps.
At the end you better off either going for the $30.00 unlimited data plan or go for a feature phone that does what you want it to. With what you want to do with the device you are better off with a feature phone.
But if you do go for Galaxy Note 2 go for the Unlimited data plan and try to learn the features of this device. Hopefully you will learn to love or at least like the features enough that you would never again think of not having data plan with the device. But my fear for you is that the experience in trying not to use data service is going to be a very bad experience for you. But at least you were forewarned.
You can remove the data plan at anytime if you buy it from AT&T, not sure about other places.
There is a few problems with your plan. T-mobile version of the note 2 is worth more in the used market than AT&T version, so you may find it hard to do an even exchange.
Secondly AT&T do sweeps to detect smartphones more regularly now. It may be able to detect the Tmobile version of note 2 very soon.

I gave examples in a post above of some of stuff that uses the cellular data. Those and much more would be hampered by taking cellular data plan out. Again, not worth it. There are feature phones that would do what that user wants without hampering the usage.
You see that Droid X on my signature? That is not on the grid anymore. And I can tell you that I notice how much the device and I am hampered by not having data plan. It sucks in a huge way. I am talking with experience.

We are both trying to tell the OP what to expect in his situation.
I know it's a little bit of an inconvenience not having mobile data, but I have been using a T-Mobile HTC HD2 for the last 2 years without a mobile data plan, just fine. If there is something I need to do that requires internet, i'm patient enough to wait until I can get on Wi-Fi, make a reminder in the calender for when I have time and problem solved. I still have Windows 6.5, which kinda sucks, on it. And I also have Android ported onto it using the memory card. So if I'm traveling somewhere I restart the phone and boot into Windows and use my TomTom GPS program. Then after, I boot back into Android and in the settings there is a checkbox that I can check to keep my phone from using a mobile data connection, so I've been doing just fine. And the GN2 will be a step up from this phone and not that much money out of my wallet.

I actually already bought the GN2 on black friday, from at&t as a contract upgrade, it was kind of an impulse buy, i'm a penny pincher... I know, kinda weird when we are talking about a $700 phone, right? ...LOL But, I try to save money where I can. I took it back on Tuesday night, because a co-worker told me about the deal at walmart. So I'm gonna go get it from them. From Saturday to Tuesday I was streaming football and basketball games for a few hours everyday, over wi-fi, just fine. I checked my data usage on the phone with the included apps and I was barely even using anything, it was only a few MB's or so, that is probably when I was playing around with it before I connected it to my home and work Wi-Fi, 4G at my work was extremely slow, so I connected to Wi-Fi and was much faster, and I was thinking to myself, if 4g is that damn slow, i don't need to be throwing money away at it... Me and another co-worker that works in my same department were wondering how fast the mobile data is so, I was trying to go to speedtest.net to test the speed and it would never even completely load the page up. I didn't even try the wi-fi speedtest at work, because i was ready to clock out and go home... I did the speedtest at my home from wi-fi and on 4g and my wi-fi kicked the **** out of the 4g, the 4g didn't even get over 1MB! I don't need to have my apps all connected to mobile data all the time, I've used facebook, ebay, craigslist, google play store, checked email and the apps that have the ads don't really bother me, not that big of a deal to me. Sometimes they are annoying, but for me I'd rather see the ad then racking up money by buying all the paid apps. I might buy a few apps that I really like but probably not very many, who knows.. ...And on a sidenote, i don't see a $30 unlimited data plan anywhere, is that a T-Mobile or AT&T plan?
So as the title says, it seems Tmobile has caught on to very few peoples tethering finally including mine and my brothers phone twice. Anybody else get caught and anybody find a fix please feel free to comment in here and let's help each other with whatever we find

VPN slows down the speeds a lot. But from what I've been able to find out, I can tether just fine for laptops and cell phones but whenever I try with my ps4 it won't let me log in

I agree with the Pastor. 113 GB's? Users like you slow it down for the rest of us and are the reason the carriers restrict tethering in the first place IMHO. Just sayin'.

You are quite daft if you believe that 113gb a month slows down tmobiles network. You have absolutely zero idea all that's taken into account to slow down a network but please take your preaching elsewhere. Uuuuuh no. I used to work for Tmobile and this might be hard for you to comprehend in all your self righteousness but there are actually people who use 1 terabyte or more a month and that's who tmobiles worried about. Don't believe me, that's fine, go do some reading for yourself. Tmobiles not a backyard company who's multi billion dollar network can't handle a measly 113gb. Besides I rack up about 47gb a month just on my phone alone with no tethering. Yes I have a life and job, no I don't live in my moms basement, so keep the childish comments to yourself.

Yes I ran into this issue with the Note 3 and Note 4, but I started using FoxFi and it's been working fine on my Note 4 for the past week.
I just made my tethering mod for this new lollipop for my wife's Note 3, and yesterday I wound up using her 3gb tethering and then I got blocked by the Tmobile message, and tried it again just a few moments ago, and to my surprise it was working again,
She doesn't like me messing with her phone, so I have to wait till she is asleep to play with it.
So it is working with lollipop with FoxFi. I will keep playing with it and see what happens. It is in testing stages.
I wasn't able to make my rom work with @dsixda kitchen, so i was using @mastergrillo stock rom and edited a few files and its working with @jovy23 turorial, that's how I've been able to make things work. I need permission from @mastergrillo to use his rom before I can post the Tethering Mod Rom.
I tried it last night and the only thing that wont tether is signing into the ps4 network but Netflix and YouTube works just fine, also tethering to a laptop. So it does look like they're finding a way to block it. But the thing is I never got a message from Tmobile saying that I used up my 5gb of data. Very weird

Using a built-in hot-spot to tether is not a big deal as long as you use it accordingly and for the purpose it was meant.
2.5 G of data is plenty for the average user powering a tablet, laptop or media player on the go or outdoors away from a wifi signal.
It comes in handy while on long road trips and the misses wants to watch some Netflix or Amazon prime.
But trying to run your entire household off of T-Mobile's network is kind of lame, I guess that this over tethering abuse is OK with XDA and when you least expect it T-mobile is going to make a case of it and drag somebody into court and the lawyers will have a field day with it.
If you're allowed 2.5gb and you want to use 200+gb, technically it can be called "theft of services" , give yourself peace of mind and buy some Internet service from a provider, 30 or 40 dollars a month isn't such a hardship.
I personally use it sparingly but really appreciate having it to use and not abuse.

The problem is that for the 2.5GB data users paid for, there is only 500MB allowed for tethering.
Users want to use their paid 2.5gb data, either on the phone or using tethering, because they already pay for the 2.5gb data and they should be able use their paid data the way they want.

According to the plan comparison chart on t mobile site you can tether all of your data quota except for the unlimited plan where you are capped at 5G, which makes some sense.
I would very much like to have the freedom to learn how to bypass tether restrictions but at the same time running an entire household worth of data off t mobile network isn't right. Just imagine what AT&T would do to you if you used 100G on their LTE plan.
Please don't get me wrong, I'm not giving a moral lecture. I am making a practical point. We all switched from AT&T or Verizon because we like what T Mobile is doing. If we abuse the system T Mobile will fail and we will have to go back to AT&T. I make a living designing telecom electronics for a company you all know so I can tell you with 100 percent confidence that if we all run our entire home Internet on t mobile network it will break and they will have to reduce the data rate for every one. It's a simple application of the available bandwidth, Shannon's theorem, and the number of users in a given cell.
So as a practical issue, let's figure out how to by pass tethering and then use it responsibly.

Get a $30 month flip phone and spend the money your saving on some Internet for your home.
I don't subscribe to cable, I just have a middle plan from Cablevision thats $50 month with Netflix, Prime with a smart Tv , a Roku in the bedroom and an antenna, and get board watching TV.
