Getting started with Arc S rooting - Xperia Arc Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys. Although I rooted my own Samsung ages ago, I haven't had to root anything in ages and my bro in law has asked me to look into rooting his Arc S.
What I seemed to be noticing is the need to unlock the bootloader first but I'm not sure where to start.
Is there some sort of 1-click method at all? He does want to stay with the stock OS so it is only the root he wants.
Thanks guys.

There are many possibilities to root without unlocking bootloader. Searching would have exposed you with many guides.
First of all - What are the Android version and build number of the phone?

Hi. I have posted earlier a working version of how to do it.
You can find it here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=49240275&postcount=1378
This post shows how to get Ultimate HD on your Arc S, but has working links to programs and ROMs, so you can use that.
I personally do recommend Ultimate, because it is just so much smoother. My phone was lagging and all the programs were slowing it down, but now it's super smooth and I always have space in the ROM.
Soon I'll post a complete recommendation on how to get the most out of your Arc S.
Hope this helped.

thanks guys.
the android version is 4.0.3
the build is 4.1.A.0.562

These 2 topics will help you. Both root your phone, which one you will use, is up to you (which ones seems easier).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1601038 - this one works only on 4.1.A.0.562
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2219711 - should work on every firmware

[Q] Arc no more rooted since 2.3.3

Hello,
Thanks to this topic : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1045204
I've rooted my Arc successfully
But, since I've updated my Arc in 2.3.3 via Companion. My Arc is no more rooted !
Then my question is, can I root it again via this process : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1045204
?
I'm noob, then please accept my apologies if my question seems stupid..
Thank you,
Benoit
No you can't root it using the method you linked - at the moment that only works up to and including 2.3.2.
However, you are in luck - you can follow this method posted a few days ago and which seems to be working for most (haven't tried it myself yet):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1115542
Merci
Thank you fo your answer, however I've already seen your link. And this method seems a little bit difficult for me.
Do you know if there is a chance that an easy method will appear later ?

Who knows. We have to wait untill a new exploid hack is released. At the moment you can unlock your bootloader and flash a pre-rooted sys file or you can use the methode provided in the post up here.
Well, for now it doesn't seem like there is another option. But, the way things move around here, I'd expect there root to be available via another method at some point. However, I don't understand anything about how the devs do their magic (I just follow the instructions they provide) so unfortunately I can't speculate about how long it might be.
I have a locked bootloader so I don't know if I'll be able to use custom roms in the future (although I'm more than happy with root and 2.3.3). If you want to have a go at flashing the 2.3.2 firmware, rooting and then updating OTA to 2.3.3 then feel free to ask questions here and I or someone else will help you out (it isn't hard really).

[Q] Rooting a locked 2.3.3 (.181) Xperia Arc

EDIT : Ok... It's magical, now that I posted this, I just get to root my phone... I found a new thread on a french website. In fact the only thing I changed from the other tries I made is that I started from the unbranded, generic 2.3.2 french firmware flashed thanks to Flashtool and then used GingerBreak (It took a few minutes, 10-15 mins.) to root, now I'm updating via OTA.
For those who want to try this way, here's the firmware.
Sorry for the useless post :/
Hi,
It's been a while I try to root my device, flashing it many times unsuccessfully to get the right rom, but no way.
I tried many ways to do it, following step by step many topics, used GingerBreak, SuperOneClick, anything I found, but nothing worked.
However I remember that some time ago, I did it and got root on my device, so why isn't it working now ?
Could someone help me ?
Thanks
Mate, it's all good that you managed to get root on your device but I don't know why you needed to look up another website. All the info you required has been available on XDA for ages.
A helpful tip - use the Search. You could have found the solution ages back and you wouldn't have to open a new thread for this. Sigh!

And all the info found everywhere else stems from here in the first place 99% of the time.

[Q] Easiest way to root a unlocked bootloader Arc running on 2.3.3 ?

If you have an Xperia Arc version 2.3.3 unlocked bootloader, you can't root using Gingerbreak or Super1click as the update, unwillingly, made sure that stuff doesn't work anymore.
The only way to root, as far as I know, is flashing -> getting 2.3.2 ROM -> root from their -> update.
I can not use that way as everytime I try to update in the last step it wont turn on again after reboot (so I have to flash using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1126358, though i'm sure it'll work for most of you.
Question being: Is there atm really no alternative to root for me then? I'm kinda desperate, i've been looking on XDA a lot of hours and this is rly my last hope to get this over with..
thx in advance!
As you said yourself.. You have an unlocked bootloader.. so you don't have to more like you cannot use the FOTA technique cos OTA update bricks the phone..
Simply flash one of the prerooted kernel like DoomLord Kernel.. Should do it .. Or if you want the stock kernel then Serach the forums for something like "Root 4.0.A.2.368" They will usually specifically say that you need unlocked bootloader..
[Guide] All in one 'Namaste guide' to Bootloader unlocking, Rooting, Flashing & more
thx for the replies.
though, I've read that whole guide before, problem is:
"Ques – Ok. So quickly tell me how to unlock my Xperia Arc’s bootloader and install a beautiful Custom ROM.
Not so fast dear. I described a deal about bootloader and benefits of its unlocking but let’s get practical. There are two disadvantages of unlocking the Xperia Arc’s bootloader.
As per my knowledge, till date, there is no Custom ROM designed for your Xperia Arc. So, it’s useless to unlock your bootloader. "
So, if a "non stock kernel" means the same as a "custom ROM", where do I find it? i dont want the original one as that1 is outdated. I know how to flash my phone, but only with delivered folders (which are always X10)
with kind regards,
Tom

I have the same problem with my Neo. I've tried flashing 2.2.2, then rooting with Flashtool (just click Xperia X10), but this doesn't work, and after relocking the bootloader and updating, the phone is bricked as well. Tried this like 5 times.
I think I'll just wait for 2.3.4 as my main reasons to root are making screenshots and removing bloatware. 2.3.4 adds screenshots, and currently, my ROM is not totally full.
Same here, just wanna get that bloatware off, starting to look like i'm gonna wait as well... this has already taken enough hours away from me

Flash a prerooted image or relock the bootloader and use the more lengthy method.

Hmm.. Only non stock kernels yet around are the DoomLord and CM (FreeXperia) kerenls.. Check the development forums for them..
The Stock aren't really "outdated".. These custom kerenels are based on the original stock code with a few features enabled.. So don't expect android 2.3.4 from them or anything..
As for rooting issues.. Follow the Namaste guide and a few posts in the development forum bout rooting arc properly and carefully.. Noting what is Locked and Unlocked and which method works where.. And it won't take more than 15 minutes to setup everything..

the application could not push the superuser to the phone "I got error copying superuser .. r-only file"
After that I found the I can read the root from my phone but I can not control the files.
I just need to root the phone without loosing PSX emulator of flashing new custom roms.:silly:

Rooting your phone is free don't by 30 dollar software its probably a trick. Just unlock your boot loader from Sony sight and flash a custom kernel that's rooted

Did you tried to root with http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2219711
You can always downgrade to .42 firmware and root it with zergrush.
It's easier to root it with custom kernel (unlocked bootloader), but you can do it even without unlocking your bootloader.

How to root xperia S ?

Hi, im a new member to this forum and im actually tryna find some help on how to root my xperia S (lt26i) phone. Im running the 4.1.2 version and although i found some guides, they are all made with different ways. I need some help on how can i root the phone because i have completely no idea about this stuff. I dont even know what means ice cream sandwitch, jellybean, kittkat, flashtool, Bootloader, kernel and all these terms i just wanna root this phone for better usage. Could someone show me a newbie way to do it? I havent done any change/configuration to my phone ever, i only typed a code on my dialpad and i found out that its "allowed" to root my phone. Thanks in advance for any help.

I suggest You read up those terms first and then root. Even just searching those terms on Google and xda would do a lot good.
Download iroot >> www.iroot.com/
Install to pc
In Mobile allow > usb debugging (Setting>developer options>)
Connect with usb cable
Click root
Done
Try to root program like last comment also you can use kingo root. If it does not work, first you should check your firmware version.
generally Xperia S devices has 6.2.B.1.96 firmware version. This version has a problem with root and you can find how to root this version form xda
I used iroot and I says I've successfully rooted my phone. But it seemed very easy, is this a real root or I need something more?
