[Q] Friday "fun" with EFS Restore and IMEI/ Not Registered on network - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

There are a numerous threads on xda about it, and I have spent a lot of time researching. However, I am afraid to mess it up even more.
Chronology of the events
1. International Note 2 sent for warranty repair.
2. For some reason I have been given a new ROM on my phone, from Three.
3. Later (more than 90 days after the warranty) the sim card stopped working. Not registered on network. (but internet worked)
4. I had no time to deal with it, had a plane to Moscow the day after. The phone worked fine with Moscow networks.
5. Came back here, decided to try fixing it. Installed CM10.2. Tried Ariza Patch. No result or outcome. Tried patching different modem. (due to my utter stupidity did not write it down.
6. Patched original firmware from Sam Mobile back on the phone. Rooted it. Tried Ariza Patch again. Killed my IMEI.
7. Tried restoring EFS. The files were copied back to /efs, but still no IMEI.
8. Formated /efs, and did it again using different solutions. Manually, through terminal, through other programs.
9. It comes out from the factory mode OK... files appear to be in /efs OK.. IMEI and other stuff remains unclear.
10. Ordered a new sim card (same operator GiffGaff (O2)) no luck.
I ran out of my insurance claims, and I have a nice chopping board, which I can't use for anything. I really wish someone could help me. I am very tired of that sh**, spent a lot of time, and looks like only made it worse. Is there a set of actions which are known to work in order to.
1. Restore IMEI/EFS
2. Restore my ability to make calls.
I would be very grateful, and if one lives near by London/Cambridge/Oxford/Moscow area, can rely on me buying him a nice cold pint of beer.
Thank you very much,
Hope everyone's getting more fun this friday, than I am.
A.

Aha! I saw their original thread, but not this one. Original was a total mess. Are you sure it is ok to do it for 4.1.2? Or did you made a mistake? How would my absence of IMEI be affected by upgrading to a new firmware from Sam Mobile? It says all over the thread, that this is for working IMEI only. My IMEI is unavailable.
I am a newcomer to Android, and still in the process of early stages of learning.

Once I've faced same while I was in 4.1 and installing a firmware from sammobile solved it. You don't need to upgrade, download a 4.1.2 firmware for your region and flash it through Odin, hope you know how to flash through odin on pc.

[Q] No Service - Insert SIM card. Does not recognize SIM after Root with custom ROM

Rooted my AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note ii (SGH-I317)
Installed custom ROM and now get no service.
Upon checking Settings -> Mobile Network
It says: INSERT SIM card Insert SIM card to access network services
About Devices has all the correct information except:
Baseband version says: UNKNOWN
How do I fix this?
Did my SIM card somehow and need to get a new SIM and call AT&T to reactivate another SIM?
My guess is that I would need stock ROM image to fix this but cannot find it.
I did find Stock Rooted I317UCALJ2 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1986556)
image but still no Service.
Any help would be appreciated as my phone is a BRICK now and useless.
thanks
i have the exact same problem and can't seem to find an answer...
restore stock rom and still nothing...
did you flash a ROM & Radio for the international Note II (N7100 or N7105)? check your phone for an IMEI number; if it's not there, then you'll have to fix that first. you aren't the first to have this problem and i've read other posts where users were able to correct the problem.
I like how no one responded for 2 months.
Worst case scenario flash stock and triangle away to 0 flash counter amd take it back. Lol. Say it stopped working.

Your comment makes a lot of sense... I'm running root on stock and didn't have a problem. I've recently installed CMW thru Odin which I'm pretty sure I did right but then...I installed a kernel to be able to overclock... could the kernel have mess up my radio? I'm not able to pull up my imei... Can you point me to the right directions in order to restore my stock Rogers kernel?

I have been here. Installed the CrashRom which was probably not meant for 1317s. Though I loved the ROM, my model number was displayed as 7100, IMEI was null and mobile network would display insert sim message.
If you watched the installation of the rom.. you would have noticed that at the end it rewrites your modem/radio files. Thankfully even after a wipe, the all important NV folder was there.
I was able to find the original AT&T rom at stockroms and also the original modem files for the 1317. I did a full wipe and installed this rom back..and thankfully the radio was back online. Didn't have to flash the modem. Now with a working phone, I wanna read well before I flash my rom again.
Hope this helps. Though I am a newbie.. If you need any further information.. feel free to send me a message.

If you look in the development section in the All in One forum link, there is a link to the stock rogers ROM and radio.
I don't know if you have done this but it hasn't been mentioned in the post so I thought I would mention it.
I had the same happen to me. The radio just quit. I had a circle with a slash through it. I Odin flashed the stock tar and no luck in fact it got worse and I had to get phone replaced. I have a ton of flashing experience and this was a first for me. I think like someone mentioned above it was a mix match ROM with some pieces from the international version although it was posted as an AT&T ROM. I still have to send it back but after seeing that someone above fixed theirs I am sending a PM

I know from past experience using ODIN for the Droid Charge, we had to pull the SIM before flashing. People were getting their SIMs fried sometimes. The remedy was to remove until the flash was complete. Avoid touching the contacts though.

can u give any links to these forums, yes i install n7100 rom on my i317 and yes i don't have a imei.
Well my friend ...I've got to tell you up front ...that the likelihood of getting your device repaired on your own is remote at best...
You have damaged the device partitions ...and likely do not have a usable backup of the EFS folder..
The EFS contains the IMEI number used for restoration purposes...
I'm not going to tell you that a repair cannot be done..as a select few users were able to fix a bricked device...but I will suggest your best solution ...IMHO
Contact the good folks at :
mobiletechvideos.com
And let them know what you did..
They offer a complete restoration service to repair your device correctly ...and can likely do the job in about a week...
They are located in Texas, USA I believe ...and they have an excellent reputation for quality service...
Your choice of course...but if I were in your situation...I'd send the device to them in a second...
Time is money...at least for me...and although I could probably fix it...I don't have a RIFF BOX...or a JTAG ...
Others will post up with links to help you...and after you have a chance to look them over ...you can decide..
Very sorry for the damaged phone....g

[Q] IMEI and Baseband Missing - GT-N7100

Hi,
I'm sure this has been covered many times but I'm finding little information that relates to the GT-N7100 or anything that I can actually get to work...
So, I'm new to flashing Android phones. This is my first Android device. I've messed around with ROMs on old Windows Mobile 6.1 and 6.5 devices before but not Android.
The problem I'm basically having is that my GT-N7100 no longer recognises quite a few system details, mainly the baseband version and the IMEI.
I'm not 100% sure where the problem first occured. What I did last night was:
Installed ODIN for Windows and flashed a root/recovery ROM to the device to root it.
Checked SuperSU was there, check. All good.
Tried to boot into CWM Recovery to flash a MIUI ROM. I got the Samsung Galaxy Note II GT-N7100 screen appear, followed by flickering like an out of tune TV.
After some Googling, found that I'd somehow got the wrong ROM for the GT-N7100, followed by a link to the correct one... so I downloaded that, flashed it, all good. I can now bootinto CWM Recovery.
Did a backup through CWM. Flashed the ROM, set it all up, then noticed I only had "Emergency Calls Only". Checked a few settings and everything looked OK. I did a bit of Googling and it pointed to checking the IMEI number.
Checked my IMEI and it came up as 004999010640000 which didn't look right to me. Tried pressing a few random buttons, nothing. Checked my box and that was definitely not right as my IMEI is 356000053********.
In a bit of confusion, went back into CWM Recovery and did a restore. This seemed to put the stock but rooted ROM back onto the device, clearing MIUI. Now I just have a circle with a line through it where the signal strength would normally be.
About Device says IMEI is "Unknown". Dialling *#06# brings up "null / null".
Now, I'm not sure where the problem occured, but I do remember seeing the circle with a line through it on the stock ROM before I flashed MIUI... so I've got a feeling it was the root/recovery that killed it.
I thought it did, but it turns out that CWM Recovery's backup does not backup the /efs folder, and even if it did, I've got a feeling it was fudged before I even got to that stage...
I have tried taking a copy of the existing /efs folder and pasting it onto my external SD card. I have then deleted the /efs folder, rebooted the device so that it regenerated the folder, deleted the nv_data.bin and nv_data.bin.md5, copied the .nv_data.bak and .nv_data.bak.md5 from the backed up copy and renamed them to nv_data.bin and nv_data.bin.md5 to no avail.
One guide suggested there may be a failed checksum error in the nv.log file, but there isn't a line that says anything about an md5 checkum error.
I tried one this morning that talked about using a hex editor to restore the information. I've done this again to no avail. I could see in the file that model number was correct when editing it, but no sign of an IMEI... but it was a large file...
I've tried a few other random bits and pieces that I can't remember, as to be honest, it was getting late and I was getting tired.
This is the information that my About Device screen shows:
Model Number: GT-N7100
Android Version: 4.1.2
Baseband Version: Unknown
Kernel Version: 3.0.31 -1071214 [email protected] #1 SMP PREEMPT Fri May 31 11:14:19 KST 2013

Signal strength: 0dBm 99 asu
Mobile network type: Unknown
Service state: Out of service
Roaming: Not roaming
Mobile network state: Disconnected
My phone number: Unknown
IMEI: Unknown
IMEI SV: Unknown
The only thing I haven't really tried so far is just flashing a stock ROM to it. Not sure where to get this from to be honest either.
Any ideas what I can do? I have noticed while typing this that it doesn't seem to be registered a SIM card being inserted? It was last night... I did try booting with no SIM card and reinstalling the SIM, but it doesn't seem to pick it up now?
Any help would be great.
Cheers,
Mike.
Little bit of an update. I have some progress.
I flashed back to the stock ROM and I now have a baseband version of N7100XXALIH, which is great. We're getting somewhere... but I still have no IMEI. This is the current report from my About Device screen:

Your imei is generic, if you have efs backup restore it
Otherwise flash stock rom +wipe if it doesn't solve then better send to service station.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda premium
Shame, I thought that might be the case.
I've just done a stock ROM flash and wipe which resolved the baseband issue... but it hasn't restored the IMEI. Unfortunately the backup I took didn't include the EFS when I thought it did so I have no backup to restore.
I'm just fiddling with a few things but not holding my hopes up. I might try a few things and if it doesn't work by the weekend, then I'll just unroot, try to clear the flash history and take it into CPW and say it's broken and I don't know why... see how it goes...
Not got much further with this to be honest. I've asked a friend who has the same device if he can send me a copy of his EFS folder that I could have a dig around with to see if I can find anything, but waiting on that at the moment... He sent me his nv_data.bin and nv_data.bin.md5, but when I put these in the EFS folder and rebooted (with no SIM for safety), it still pulls out the dummy IMEI number...
Someone has suggested to me to search around on here for the standard PIT file, to flash that and then flash a stock pre-rooted ROM which should sort it all out. I've not heard of this before, but from a quick search I've found that PIT is Partition Information Table... which suggests this is going to completely re-build the partition table and then flash a new device. Is this advisable, and do you think it could resolve my issue?
I've managed to install TriangleAway and reset the custom flash count to 0, so it no longer reports as custom firmware... I may just take it to CPW tomorrow and see what they say before I even think about messing with this PIT stuff anymore.
Unfortunately, EFS is a little more complicated than a folder with a few files, it's a dedicated partition which generally can't be restored without a backup.
Using somebody else's folder won't work, and actually using another imei is probably illegal since every phone is supposed to have one unique imei.
I've read that people some times miraculously get back their imei after flashing stock rom, but since you've tried it, I don't think there's realistically much to do besides sending to service.

I had faced the same issue and was able to get the IMEI back. Even I did not have the backup of the EFS folder. Go through the thread.

Try to find a stock rom which has all three - CSC, Modem and PDA available. Install it with PIT from ODIN. (I installed 4.1.1) Once installation is complete, you should be able to see you IMEI number correctly. Root the device and take the back up of the EFS Folder and install any rom that you need. Hope this helps.
This is illogical
Flashing 3 files have no more role than flashing stock rom +wipe
On The contrary flashing 4.1.1 may brick your device.

I wasn't planning on actually using someone else's folder, but more using it to test if that was firstly 100% definitely my issue, and secondly to see if I could dig around to try and work out what might actually be wrong with the /efs directory. I have absolutely no intention of using someone else's IMEI, which is the reason why I took the SIM card out before booting it up with the new nv_data.bin.

Thank you so much for this suggestion! I tried it, but unfortunately Emergency Recovery wouldn't detect that my device needed it. I guess it technically didn't as the OS was working, just didn't have a working IMEI...
However, it did keep popping up telling me there was an update for the device, and everything had a different version number. PDA, PHONE and CSC all had completely different versions to what was flashed... so I thought, what harm can it do? Hit update, let it do it's thing and hey presto! I have a working device again! :good:
I'm doing my happy dance. Saved me a trip to CPW tomorrow! :fingers-crossed:

No.
It's different for each device. To flash others is illegal and all the devices have same imei will gets banned.
So never try to share same imei.

Cheers,
Mike.

mine after upgrade to 4.3 same happened as DMG1 custom rom, imei getting 00499xxxx and cannot connect to network..
i'm really really frustated... does it seems that the modem chip is too old and cannot accept any new released modem ?
downgrade modem in 4.3 impossible, getting imei null.. flash kernel in 4.3 brings me boot loop and vibrate.. and no one cannot give me better solution..
i googling everywhere and found some method on how to repair imei using uart usb cable.. is it possible ?
Mobile network not available
Hi Dr.Ketan and everyone else on here.
I've been following/installing Roms and posts on XDA since the original HTC desire days before moving onto an S2 and then the Note 2, strangely enough is my first post. I have been following the progress of this rom since early October and finally decided to give it a try with the more matured version 3.
The Rom worked well and I can see this pretty much being ready as new daily Rom (ProBam is my current daily). There is one problem though that I have spent half the day trying to figure it out, I thought someone here might be able to give me advice. I did a backup in Philz then and full wipe before installing the Rom.
After the Rom loaded everything that I tried seemed to work quite well, apps in general were fluid and from what I could see things were as they should be. When trying to text or make calls I ran into “Mobile network not available” problems. When installing the rom I did select the MI6 modem. So far I have tried.
1. Checking the sim card (testing it in another phone)
2. Contacting my cellular provider (Cell C in South Africa) to make sure they didn’t block me for any reason (which they didn’t).
3. I went into network settings to manually select my network (it wont register to Cell C).
4. I tried restoring Probam again which works but now get “Mobile network not available" problems on that Rom, the same issue on todays nightly Cyanogen 10.2 which does indicate that this is a problem with other Roms now.
I did some hunting on Google and see that others have had similar problems with Samsing phones where their EFS folder gets corrupted and IMEI number becomes 0000. In my case it looks like my IMEI number is still there and when I checked my Philz backup I learnt today that a standard Philz backup doesn’t by default backup the EFS folder (just my luck). Short of downloading a 1 gig stock rom using crappy South Africa internet and flashing it with Odin might there maybe be a quicker way that I have overlooked?
Beyond this thanks for a really great Rom, I am curious what would cause this problem with the V3 Rom so that no one else is affected with this, I have flashed other Roms over the years and not had this one yet :>
Thanks!!

Your imei is generic, if you have efs backup restore it
Otherwise flash stock rom +wipe if it doesn't solve then better send to service station.

I can't make phonecalls and text obviously i didn't know anything about Efs back up it said recommended but wasn't check at this time i was just hitting next, next ect. ect. and then the phone starts up working and rooted! I get extremely happy then i try to make a phone call but nope mobile network is avalabile i check my baseband (Unknown) Imei(Unknown) take in mind i'm exteremly new to this and had no clue about the EFS or Imei number ect. I am tech savy with other products such as Jtag (For xbox 360) but this was my first root and i know i messed up... So let me sum everything up. I Have a two-year contract with verizon and Total Full Coverage, But i'm assuming this voids warrenty right... I called verizon and made up a story saying... I left my phone at work and it was stolen for about a week i then told everyone at work if it wasn't returned a week later that i would be tracking the phone with the police and that the phone was returned the next morning on my desk... and that i was missing the simcard and everything was wiped... They simple told me to come in and they will replace the sim card for free... Now my phone is still rooted... I'm going to stock flash it with odin or at least try... Will simply getting a new sim card work or do i need a whole new phone?... and should i even unroot it stock?... or take it in with SuperUs and said thats how i found it when i got it back stolen...? Hi,
Just explaining. EFS is kind of a folder that contains the IMEI number and other MAC addresses of WIFI or Bluetooth. What happened when you rooted and flashed a ROM is that the EFS folder has been modified. There are many reasons why this happens. So, changing a new SIM won't work. You would have to fill the IMEI number and the other MAC addresses to make phones calls and etc.,
Regarding whether to leave the phone with root or not, It depends on you whether you can make up a convincing story to avoid charges for re-instating the IMEI number back by Samsung.
You can change it to Stock if you want to, but Verizon can easily find out that you had rooted it since IMEI number won't be wiped by any other way..

I'm taking my phone up to verizon tommorow... to see if they can provide me with what i need to do.... and if they find out it was rooted will they not help me at all and just tell me to pay full price for a new phone (keep in mind the galaxy note 2 is $800 still) also i have total full coverage... + that convincing story... and its my first phone with verizon aka first problem... please tell me they will fix it without charging me....
Have you flashed a N7100 rom on a N7105 or vice versa as that will make baseband unknown and can be fixed.

Hi,
The first mistake you have done is that your phone model is not N7100. It is different for Verizon. That's the reason your IMEI number got screwed up when you flashed a rom of N7100.
The Fail in Odin is not a big deal as it might have been because there could have been two usb connections made or as you said changing usb ports.
Please verify whether the ROM supports your Verizon model before flashing.
Also, There will be still a counter and status that would indicate that you've rooted before If you want to reset these counters then search in the forum and you'll be able to find out.

I was going to do it while i was rooted but they want $2.50 for it.... just to reset counters.. i've seen plenty get warrantys restored even tho they didn't reset the counter verizon/samsung doesn't have time to check every single phone its just to be extra safe

You make out like resetting the counters is easy or something. It isn't and it's reasonable price for the app.
I suggest you go to the Verizon Note II forum next time unless you want to break your phone again.

I had similar problem. May be you haven't deleted it. The #4 comment is kinda right. By mistake I wiped my internal storage without backup or without writing down the baseband and build numbers. I had to flash numerous stock roms until I was able to make phone calls and receive msgs. Also on stock roms that were not for my phone the imei # was different from the one on the box, starting with 0049 or something.

First of all
Flash stock and the might sort the baseband out
If that doesnt work just send it in after unrooting. I had a similiar problem but I acted dumb and said it just happened and they took it in and repaired within 12 days.

EFS backup
The moral is to backup the efs folder ASAP, at least before you try anything 'drastic' to your phone
lost imei
I also lost my imei the first time i flashed custom rom on my note 2. but i simply flash older modem and its working fine since then.. ohh and i als made efs backup using terminal emulator..

N7105 factory mode

Hi guys, i seriously need help here. Please refer to attached screenshot.
I came here after flashing sokp 4.2.2 rom, and it prompted me an error saying encryption was unsuccessful. After which, i wasnt able to use my phone since then.
I tried to flash stock rom, and I end up with this. Please dont tell me to search the forums because Ive been to them countless times. I suppose this is a efs issue, because baseband and imei are unknown and I do not have a backup for it. Tried with the writing tool for imei, doesnt work as well.
Pls ask me for any info u might need/i missed out to help with this issue.
I think it's in the efs folder, you have to use a root browser and edit factory mode to off instead of on. It's been a long time since I saw factory mode so I'm not 100%

Thanks for your reply. But even if I off factory mode, will the baseband and imei be unknown?
I'm not sure but if it doesn't the 2 things that might be worth trying are, emergency firmware recovery with kies or mskips toolkit has a rescue package but I think you have to go to skipsoft.net now as the thread was closed
Sent from my GT-N7105 using Tapatalk
It's current value is "OFF"...u have to write "ON"...i know it sounds weird but that is the value. Amd if u don't have any previous back up of EFS then there's nothing u can do at home to bring it back. Same thing happened to mine and i got it repaired from a local shop for cheap...they used z3x box...the problem is my IMEI is correct and network works fine...but everytime i flash a ROM i have to take it to the shop and get the modem patched or else it doesn't connect to network. So go to Samsung service centre and get it fixed by them...they'll charge u more but their fix is permanent.

Alright, it seems like i have a backup of the efs, bt the nv_data.bin file is not included, and i read on other threads that this file is responsible for the imei and all? This backup is dated in aug2013, but it doesnt help in restoring my phone because the efs pro software doesnt see this as a backup file. Im actually looking for one of the thread that actually taught how to edit the nv_data.bin file, but no luck till date.

[Q] IMEI says 0 on 4.4.1

Hey guys, I think I screwed up. I think that I lost my IMEI through flashing it and I didn't make a back up. It says 0 and only very few of the *# codes work, the *#7285# and #22745927 codes do absolutely nothing and the only one that I know of that works is *#*#4636#*#* which doesn't help me at all. Most programs that I use don't detect the phone correctly or my phones just downright wrecked. Example is DFS says CPS N/A in every section and Samsung MEID Repair says "Unhandled exception has occurred in your application" when I try to connect it to my phone.
I'm running CM11 4.4.1 and I had the problem when I was running a 4.3 ROM. Also I have data and I can make calls. Its just that I cant send MMS and I drop to edge over time and stay on edge until I restart.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Everyone I call is saying it'll cost $65 - $75 IF they can even fix it.

I did not. That helps a LOT. Thank you so much. I havent tried going back yet, I'm gonna be more cautious about what i do now. Can I go back to stock from CM11 4.4.1 without screwing anything up? I keep seeing that you cant downgrade. Is that the case or is it just the case with official android roms?
Thank you so much, I feel like with your help I may be able to fix this. What im thinking that I have to do (I'll wait for your opinion) is that I should flash to stock, use the nv reader/writer, then ill be able to reroot it? When you say that it could screw up the network, what exactly do you mean?

I'm not sure what bootloader are you using
but IF your phone is fully unlocked, it doesn't matter, just flash 4.3 Stock and you're good to go
check out this post if you need help getting back to stock http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2658486
the reason why you see people keep saying you can't "Downgrade" is mostly due to the bootloader you have, and it only apply to if and only if you're downgrading from MJB bootloader to a older version of Touchwiz (ie. Touchwiz 4.3 which will obviously come with MJB, thus you can't downgrade to 4.2 or 4.1 versions of touchwiz), not AOSP. if you're on AOSP in which CM is one, yes you can go from one AOSP to another, but no one does it because most of the time newer > older =D

Yes.
but again you might want to update it to latest version since according to this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2658486, he mentioned version 6.0.4.5 and 6.0.4.7 though he didn't say if it's necessary to be but to be safe, you should so that you won't run into any issues.
though again, let me warn you, Reinjecting your IMEI, will work, BUT at the same time, it might screw up with your broadband
I experienced it once with one of my S3 and it stuck on either E or G network.. and I had to fix it by copy my efs folder to that phone in order to fix(and unless you have a good friend with S3 phone with same model, or own more than 1 S3, you won't be able to do it since nobody want to share, apply to me as well)

So despite being stuck in factory mode I was able to write the NV and luckily I dont have any new network problems as far as I know. However my IMEI now says / 00 and in the phone info it says "unknown"
So this is my progress so far. I have made connection with the NV items reader and I have saved the NV file. when i rewrote it i noticed that my imei is / 00 and it says unknown in the phone info. I have my imei and my converted imei and i was going to insert it into line 00550 but that line says "00550 (0x0226) - Inactive item". Factory mode is still on, I have edited the text files for both factory mode and keystr from ON to OFF and back again rebooting my phone each time and getting no result.
So im stuck in factory mode with / 00 imei. I can however make connection with programs now, I feel like im moving forward.
I feel like it may be worth noting that ive never ever seen a nv_data.bin in my phone....

make sure that you take your SIM out before injecting imei... then try again
and nv_data.bin is in your efs folder which you can only see it if you have some sort of root explorer

I fix mine with this .....
Ok... I hated to see the posts about the tar file bricking a couple of phones. I had taken it down so not to brick anyone else's phone. But with over 400 downloads and only 2 reports I feel that it was fine, but in either case I have redone it. I have flashed it many many time now and my phone is fine.
Please only use Odin 3.0.7 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1722686
Make sure Auto Reboot and Re-Partition are checked. Uncheck F. Reset Time and anything else that might be checked.
Check and load the file in the PDA slot.
Start Flash and wait till it the phone reboots.
I747UCUEMJB 4.3 Odin flashable tar.
