if i flash update file from takju 4.0.4 to 4.1.1 through cwm with just unlocked bootl

if i manually update from 4.0.4 takju to the jb 4.1.1 through cmw, will i still get OTA updates in future. also, if the i do the update, will it lock the bootloader and erase cwm? thanks

OK to get a few things right here, you need to have stock recovery to install OTA, no it won't relock boot loader, yes it will erase CWM. Your rom needs to be 100% stock (including boot loader, kernel and radio aswell as rom and recovery).
The way I just went to 4.1.1 (takju) I was running the preview JB Google IO rom anyway so in CWM I reflashed that to undo any system changes I made. Then using Mskips nexus tool kit I used it to flash stock recovery and then BOOT (NOT FLASH) to CWM. Find the update and flash it. Before you do all this use titanium to back up your stuff, do a nandroid and get voodoo OTA root keeper so you get root back after the update.
Then using the tool kit again I used it to flash CWM back. Then your done. I won't give further instructions but for further reading efrant has very good posts about this stuff, mskip has very good instructions on his tool kit in the thread

i'm still a little confused. my phone is completely stock. it's a takju 4.0.4. i don't want to wait for the OTA for jb 4.1.1. i was going to use the nexus tool kit to unlock the bootloader ( i believe that's required to boot it into cwm) then run the OTA update that people posted for my version to update it. I don't care about keeping cwm or bootloader, just want the update now and keep the phone still stock. i also want to make sure that i'll get OTA updates in the future. It looks like I can just boot it into cwm without flashing it, so that's what i'm going to do.

Yeah you can but you need to unlock the boot loader to do it, which wipes your entire phone so back up any thing you want to keep like photos or music. When the bootloader is open you can just leave it and just lock it if you need to send for warranty. Or if you already have root but locked boot loader there is a free app to unlock it on play store

once, i update the file using the nexus toolkit to boot into custom recovery, once it updates, it will lock the bootloader and the phone will be back to stock right? or is the bootloader going to stay open.
also, will i still get future OTA updates if i just do the update by booting into recovery and not flashing cwm?

Once you unlock it the bootloader stays open until you choose lock I again. You can still get ota but remember you need the matching bootloader, kernel, radio and unmodified system and recovery. So just booting cwm is fine to apply and then after its applied the patch you can flash what ever you want again. I find its always a good idea to make a back up of a 100% stock rom and keep it on the pc just in case. This is all simple and quick with the tool kit

Hey, first, thanks for the replies. Second, if I unlock the bootloader to install update, make no other changes, meaning everything else is stock and the update is googles stock update, them once the update is done, can I run the toolkit again to lock the bootloader. Doing this will it bring my phone to same everything as a stock ota updated one? Or is me unlocking and then locking bootloader going to cause me to have a different version for the next ota

No worries its fine. Yes after you have successfully applied a stock OTA patch onto a stock rom then you are running the same as everyone. Their are minor regional differences, like takju and yakuto (what ever lol) toro, toro plus etc but flashing a ota patch from a different build won't work on a rom that doesn't match.
You can go to the Google developer site and search for the full ROM and you know definitely its 100% as its meant to be, the patches just write over the bits which change in updates. The thing to bear in MIMD about flashing the whole ROM from Google site is that it will wipe your entire phone

Root Phone T-Mo update questions

If I root my phone and Tmo sends an OTA update, will my phone still be rooted?

I don't believe you have to reset the flash count for this. But you do need to flash unrooted stock ROM first. Then get the OTA update. After that root again.

I had another phone I rooted and when Tmo tried to push the update, Recovery mode caught it. I could never get the phone out of recovery mode after that. I got rid of the phone.
I don't want that to happen again obviously and why I asked the question. Seems to me, returning to stock, the rerooting might be more trouble than it's worth unless I had some compelling reason to do so.

I like managing the background auto start processes to make my devices run much more smoothly. Which is why I like to root. Back up is another reason.
At this point I believe staying stock while rooted right now would help in the process of unrooting for updates.
There is going to be at least two or more updates. First update to get our multi-window, Swift Key Flow keyboard and other stuff that should of been in our Note 2 devices. Another update that will be enabling our LTE radio (when T-Mobile rolls out LTE). Jelly Bean 4.2 Android OS update should be updated somewhere in between these other updates (possibly at the same time as the enabling LTE update). So you are correct in thinking first before rooting.

Root and leave stock just my idea. Makes things easier when unrooting. But that is just my idea.

After each OTA update you should make a backup of your stock rom as your latest stock rom. We should have a latest version of stock rom posted in our forum. But always best to use your latest backup image for stock rom. Again: This is gold here.

According to this guy all I need to do is flash the stock recovery, then I can take the update, then just flash Clockwork recovery once the update is taken and by what I think he's saying I don't have to unroot.

would voodoo rootkeeper work for unrooting a stock rom, taking the ota update, then using voodoo again to regain root?
the only thing ive done to my phone is root, but i still want the ota updates for multi-window, etc later on.

I dont have this phone yet but I know in most android you can disable updates in the settings so you dont run into those kinda problems

when you install custom roms doesnt that make ota s moot? or does the device still retain updated functionality when using custom rooted rom ?

It all depends on what is going with the OTA. Some OTA updates might enable hardware that was otherwise dormant. LTE sure would be nice...

No, Voodoo rootkeeper would not work here. Not needed either.
When you root Galaxy Note 2 it sets a "Modified" status to your Galaxy Note 2. As long as your Galaxy Note 2 status is set to "Modified" then you can't get OTA updates. This is why you have to flash Stock ROM back into your GN2. I am hoping and believing that you don't have to reset the flash count for this. At least that was not the case with Sprint OTA update version. The OTA updater just checks if you are unmodified or modified. If you are modified then the updater will tell you that you can't update because you are "Modified". Again this is the reason for flashing the Stock unrooted ROM. Once you flash Stock ROM then you will have "Unmodified" status. That is when you will be able to get OTA updates.
Please get the Stock recovering ROM and be ready to flash it when OTA update is ready.

Yes, root disables the updates through the status of "Modified". In fact when you try to update it says that you can't update because your GN2 is "Modified". But there are reasons that people want OTA updates: If you want your Multi-window feature, Swift Key Flow keyboard w/ S pen write to text, etc then you want the OTA update. If you want the LTE enable when T-Mobile rolls out LTE, then you want OTA update at that time And I can go on....
That is why people are asking these very good questions.

And in either case, within 24 hrs of any updates being released we'll have that rom in a .zip here on xda pre-rooted and ready to flash. I don't mess with counters, rooting/unrooting, etc... It'll be here!

Firstly messing with counters is mostly likely not needed. So that should not be a worry. Just to be noted.
Secondly, I hope that you are correct on that. But I been there thinking that community would do so but didn't. And least not for a while. And when they did found ways around to root again, it was not the way we wanted it. So I learned to not to put all my eggs in one basket.
Flashing Stock recovery ROM, taking the OTA updates, then root again is one of the baskets that all should have. If you don't need then no harm done. But if need and don't have it then harm done. A solution to the problem until another solution comes by.

I was wondering this as well. In the past I have had success with getting updates and using apps that required root by simply using the Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper app, but I don't know if it will work on this particular phone or not.
I suppose it's worth a shot to at least try when an update rolls around because if it works it's a lot easier than flashing back to stock and re-rooting again.
*Edit: Ah never mind, saw JaguarXT's reply saying it won't work. In that case I think I will hold off rooting the Note II for the time being.

I am currently rooted and do not show the "Modified" status. I am also able to check for OTA updates. I believe it is bad information like this which is allowing people to feel it's OK to run amok with their phones. I feel this promotes the "need" for ROMs when most users could simply sit down with a launcher and customize it exactly the way they want it without a custom ROM. Now if I was getting some amazing battery life, or additional functionality that I can't live without, I might look at a ROM or two, but this isn't a Nexus, and stock\rooted\personalized works for me.

Here is a couple of screen shots of what I was talking about. After stock recovery ROM no more "Modified" and can accept updates. Only after rooting get "Modified". Right I am rooted for backup and for AutoStarts app. But I did tried methods and know what works.

That's exactly where I am in all this. I plan NO custom roms because I'm sick of my phone not working.
I just want to do a few things that require root on the stock rom and for the things I want, I don't need a custom recovery.

samsung galaxy s3 sgh-t999v mobilicity shows up as Modified

Hi, I recently got a galaxy s3 (canadian version) 2 weeks ago from Mobilicity and just recently rooted following this method : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1771687. Before doing the rooting I was on the JB 4.1.1 update they released recently. Also used this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=34661189&postcount=1 to unlock the phone
I would check daily but today I just noticed my device's status was Modified and I am unable to check for updates. I'm not sure what caused the modified status. I checked in download mode and my count is still 0/No. I also checked Triangle Away and it was the same. My device was normal when I first installed and used the root, I can only remember I just updated a few apps yesterday. I tried flashing with odin the rooted system image and it's the same.
I would like to be able to use the stock rom with root and updates, and set my device to normal status (I'd rather not update through Odin every time there is an update, and I am very satisfied with the stock rom). I've already backed up my data using Titaniumbackup, all my contact info and music (the stuff I only care about). Help appreciated.
EDIT: I also have installed Openrecovery script using goomanager, could that be the issue?

You will not be able update via your carrier OAT if you rooted your device. The only thing you can do is to unroot the device, do the update, and re-root the device again. Visit www.galaxys3root.com on how to root and re-root.

If that is all you wanted just flashing the root66 rom from mrRobinson's threat in you original post could have accomplished it.
This would not trip the flash counter if it was still 0, what did it was installing a custom recovery like open recovery.
Follow this steps to get to a 4.1.1 "unmodified" or normal stock system with only root injected to it. You will be able to check and receive OTA updates, but if you ever update your rom OTA you will loose root.
1-download root66 jellybean rom for mobilicity from mrRobinson's thread, there are instructions there how to flash it with desktop Odin. (this will keep everything in your rom and will give you the stock recovery back, so the counter does not trip again)
2-download, install and run triangle away from chainfire's thread this will reset the counter to 0. Search for it.
Now your counter is 0 again, nothing is tripping it, room is rooted but it will still say "modified" and OTA updates may still not work, to fix it you need a clean start. Do a system factory reset, start over fresh and life will be beautiful.

So I rooted my Note II but I left the stock ROM on the phone, and AT&T just pushed a big OTA update. What steps do I need to be able to install an OTA update now? After a bit of research, it seems I need to unroot? I've just never had to do this before because I usually just use custom ROMs, but on the Note I wanted to leave the stock ROM in place.

I used MrRobinsons' root injected ROM which was UCAMA4 (I think) and left the recovery alone, used the root access app that I bought to keep root. I did not remove any AT&T apps and was able to update to UCAMC3 without any problems. And the app that I bought kept my root access.

Well -ALL- I did was root, install clockwork recovery, and Super SU. So I'm wondering what I need to do to be able to install an OTA update now, because I currently cannot.

It is my understanding that you must leave the recovery stock. I have also read that you must leave the AT&T apps in there but I am not sure about that. So if you want the update go back to stock then update then change your recovery.

Well it's been a while since I've messed with this, so I just need to find instructions on how to return to stock.
Edit: Found a thread to remove root and factory reset, but my OTA update still won't install.
Edit2: Goes to the AT&T Updating progress screen and fails at about 25% and then reboots and starts up as normal.

No idea, it's a ~65mb update that just came up yesterday for me. I was looking to reset my phone back to factory anyways lately, so I just decided to do it now on account of there being an update. Since it's not working anyways, I might just re-root and flash a custom ROM, but then I lose S-Pen functionality, but I don't use the pen much these days anyways.

The update has two possibilities...
Either it's the latest UCAMC3 update for UCAMA4.....or...
If updating from the UCAMA4 to C3....and the update has an interrupt...or errors....it "can" complete the update process and show a finished status...but will prompt the user again later and download the update again....minus the updater files placed to cache....because they already exist...
I've had this happen twice in so many months as I returned to stock for various reasons...
The file size is roughly 65 meg.....while the complete update is 68.86 meg..
Just take the update...as it's the UCAMC3 minus the updater...g

So I was rooted and had a custom recovery...

I was rooted on OB7 with chainfire and the stock recovery image or whatever, it's been several years, well I used superSU and unrooted the phone and it still wouldn't let me do OTA. So tonight I downloaded the OF5 Rom and updated through Odin, Now it's telling me my device status is official and it's currently downloading the next update... The issue I am wondering about now is... Since it will OTA, I want to put UN7 on my phone and I don't want to update past PJ1, will it let me stop the updates?

You got some OTA updates to go to get to PJ1 but there's a better way. You could get the PJ1 stock tar from the stock tar thread in general forum and upgrade through Odin again.
OTA is sequential patch updates. Stock tar is full updates. I'd recommend factory reset before flashing the marshmallow update to save time on initial boot optimization.
To answer your question about stopping the updates, turn off auto update feature in Settings when you get to PJ1. Follow the ROM OP to install once you get to PJ1- however you choose.

OTA is sequential patch updates. Stock tar is full updates. I'd recommend factory reset before flashing the marshmallow update to save time on initial boot optimization.
To answer your question about stopping the updates, turn off auto update feature in Settings when you get to PJ1. Follow the ROM OP to install once you get to PJ1- however you choose.

So, now I am on PJ1 and I don't know how to put TWRP on my phone, I want to put tx_dbs_tx's UN7 hybrid on my phone and I am having issues both finding and putting TWRP on my phone... and I can't find a download or anything for it...
I've downloaded 2 different versions of twrp and used odin to put them on but I think I am doing something wrong because it isn't booting into twrp

and of course I was missing a step... nobody said uncheck auto reboot and it kept keeping the bootloader locked
got it done now and I managed to get the custom rom installed... or at least I think it's working

Oh your talking about installing twrp? Yeah you have to not let it reboot. And when is done pull battery and boot into recovery to get it to stick. Obviously you figured it out. But just saying. I think earlier versions you didn't need to do that but now you do.
Glad you got it going. How you like the Rom? Running smooth for me.

ROM is good
Well I obviously got it going and didn't read the first couple posts after the install and didn't notice the SMS issue so I had that problem and I can't find a lot of the menu options that I had with the OB7 original I've been running for about 18 months... It's pretty smooth now and I'm wondering how fast it will fill up my internal memory I like that it's almost 20 gigs free.. for a while I was running on less than 6 I need to find an efficient way to use my external SD card... Other than that the options are neat but it seems really bloated all the extra Google apps make me sick even though I never use them... I've got titanium backup and am freezing them and will probably uninstall them soon... I want a small ROM that I can customize myself or apps that are easily removed or whatever half the apps I don't want are in ROM which is a pain to remove or I just don't know how to unless I use TB
Wow that's a novel sorry but yeah that's my ramblings for the next week I guess... Now I'm gonna hit the rack...
