Samsung SGH-T989 - Issues with ROM upgrades, CWM and Titanium Backup - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

I'm new to rooting phones and have run into an issue with my SGH-T989. First let me say that I did several days worth of reading and investigation to make sure that I was comfortable moving forward. I rooted the phone without any issues using ODIN3 v1.85 and CWM SuperSU v0.87.
After that, I decided I'd like to try installing a ROM - Beanstalk-4.4.2_R1-v205-Linaro-20131216-hercules.zip. Again, I followed very specific instructions but ran into issues first with the version of JB radio I had on the phone (T989UVLI1).
When the BeanStalk ROM install failed, I tried using CWM Recovery to restore my stock ROM but that also failed on an MD5 hash mismatch. I suspect that's probably because I modified the folder name after I ran the backup- again, following some online instructions but wasn't really thinking when I did it.
I rebooted the phone after the failed stock restore, it went back to a semi-stock state like it was a new phone set up however I was having issues with entering recovery mode through CWM and TitaniumBackup was acting a bit flaky as well.
I was finally able to get the phone to enter CWM Recovery mode by holding down the power and volume up/down buttons and then proceeded to flash the radio to T989UVMC6 and flashed the ROM- however I forgot to wipe the flash before I installed Beanstalk.
Now the phone boots into Beanstalk, but none of the GAPPS work and I can't get into Play Store to try and install anything to fix the problem.
I'm also starting to suspect an issue with the rootware since I'm getting messages to that effect through TB and CWM ROM Manager won't launch without immediately force closing.
Anyone have any suggestions to offer?
Thanks in advance!

Quick update - I got GAPPS installed and so far things seem stable. Still not able to restore my stock ROM though, so I may be stuck with BeanStalk 4.4.2 for now.

Crack Flasher Needs help!

I use rom manager premium and the touch recovery. I'm having issues installing and restoring roms. First problem is i'll download a rom, try to install, and for some reason it either completely boot loops or just goes back to cwm recovery after trying to reboot. Then when I try to restore to the backup I just made of the working rom it gives me an md5 mismatch error. I did not rename the backup file or put it into a different folder.
Twice I have gone back to complete stock, unrooted and then rooted again and tried and this same issue has come up.
I feel like this all may have started either with me trying an AOKP rom or trying a new 4.0.4 rom.
Any insight on this?
Thanks!
Try using a standard CWM recovery i.e NOT Touch! IIRC it caused a few issues in certain Circumstances

Reverted to stock ROM, stops at bootloader

I have one S3 that's stock and another that's rooted, so I decided to try CM9 first on rooted S3 because CM10 didn't seem quite ready for daily use. Flashed ROM and Gapps, and things were fine until wi-fi ceased functioning. Worked, then didn't ever again. Nothing I found in searching this helped. And I couldn't get to PlayStore because there was no connection. Tried many things to reset wi-fi, but despite excellent signal, the phone wasn't connected to Internet. I reflashed CM9 (same most current release) but it didn't help.
So, having not actually done anything other than adding ROM Manager, I decided to flash latest CM10 nightly with CWM recovery via ROM Manager. Everything was fine, except of course I forgot I needed to install newer Gapps. However, when I went to do so, ROM Manager was no longer there and manually trying to get recovery only resulted in download mode, which meant I couldn't install Gapps or do much of anything.
I spent time trying to figure out how to get recovery, but having run out of options, I thought it perhaps best to flash back to stock using desktop Odin. I have the MD5 for 4.1.1 LK3. So I did this, but now once past the Samsung and AT&T animations, the phone stops with a Samsung logo. And that's where I'm at.
I know I've seen threads on fixing this, but I can't find them and I would like rectify the softbrick circumstance. What to do.

Did you remember to factory reset (wipe /data) when flashing the stock ROM? That's the most common cause of soft-bricking in this scenario.
If not, boot into recovery (Vol Up + Home + Power) and do so, then try booting the phone again.
Do I do factory reset from desktop Odin in download mode?
That's one possibility, but if you don't want to go through the Odin process again, you can just do the reset from recovery as I outlined above.

Ah...volume UP. But wipe data/factory reset didn't help. If I select update from external storage, would that be MD5 or...?
Okay, I wiped cache partition and I'm in business. No more softbrick. Thanks!

[Q] PACman 4.3 Help-Blame Tyler

Im sorry if this is being repeated, but I'm relatively new to flashing custom ROMs and up until now haven't really had any issues.
I recently flashed the latest PACman rom 4.3 and I'm not sure what went wrong. I'm coming from 4.2. I did everything the same as usual, wiped cache and dalvik, installed the zip. As soon as the phone rebooted, I started getting error messages. "Acore has stopped working, blame tyler", same thing for the system UI. So I decided to do a wipe and restore. Well now my restore wont work. I've had to go back to a PAC version from back in February because none of my other restore files will work. I'm not sure what to do. Even on this restore file, I'm getting "insufficient storage" messages when I havent even uploaded all my apps yet.
Please help!

I had similar problems going to 4.3 as well. Mine kept getting frozen at the boot screen, and wouldn't restore any of my backups. I tried flashing back to previous versions of android and nothing was really making any difference. Finally I ended up flashing the whole phone back to stock. From there I flashed the new 4.3 stuff on top of that and now everything is working flawlessly like it should again. I still have no idea what caused the issues, it's gotta be something in the new 4.3 stuff that's trickling in.
Here's what I did:
Download the most recent complete firmware file (which is UCDLK3 for d2att)
Download the pit file for my phone
Flash stock image and pit file with repartition through ODIN
Flash custom recovery back through ODIN (CWM, TWRP, etc)
Download and flash latest UCDMG2 bootloader (for d2att)
Download and flash your choice of ROM, kernel & gapps
and optionally -
Update modem to latest UCDMG2
Now you should be back to a fresh install of 4.3 which works the way it should! Hopefully you had your apps backed up with titanium or something similar which can be restored now as well.

Thank you for responding and providing details. I guess I'm not understanding where to find these files. I have the firmware downloaded. The pit file, I can't seem to find no matter what I search for. I can find help on creating my own, but I'm afraid I'll screw something up if I start messing with things. The stock image, bootloader and modem...no idea where to find those either. I've never had to do any of this before. Are these files within the rom I'm trying to flash??

[Q] Beginner trying to root/flash new ROM on T989!

Hi all, found my old SGH-T989 and I want to turn this phone into my play phone.
I am new to rooting and all and I don't know which versions of what to use. Everytime I mess up, I have to restore the phone back to stock 2.3.6 then upgrade to 4.1.2 via Kies, then try to root and such.
Problem is... I don't know which ROMs, gapps to use and which cwm to use!!! Seems like every guide out there is outdated because I get stuck in a bootloop every single time I try to flash a ROM or I get Error 7...
Any tips?
I just want 4.4.2 at least on my SGH-T989 What are my options? What are your suggestions?

You need to be on 4.1.2 for this to work. I am bit responsible for what happens. You can get 4.1.2 for Odin from samfirmware.com. Download the latest TWRP from here: http://techerrata.com/file/twrp2/hercules/openrecovery-twrp-2.7.1.0-hercules.tar and flash it in Odin. Your phone should reboot. Boot into recovery by powering off your phone and then holding power and the two volume buttons until you hear two vibrations and then hold just the volume buttons until you see a black screen. Release all buttons. Flash @Chainfire's SuperSU in recovery ( http://download.chainfire.eu/452/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.02.zip) Wipe cache ald Dalvik and reboot. You should be rooted and able to flash any KitKat ROM. AOSPA is a good choice. It is pretty stable.

I just flashed CarbonROM on my sister's phone this weekend. Rooting is not really required.
My process:
Flash TWRP (this was the most difficult of the entire process. It is still relatively easy though). I used Odin to flash the latest TWRP. TWRP provides odin flashable archives so it is really just a matter of knowing how to flash thing using Odin. This does not require root. The CWM wiki page says that Rooting is not required, nor is it the preferred method when flashing a new rom.
You can use Heimdall, but it is very hit and miss with this phone. Odin is much more "reliable" on the T989. I tried Heimdall, but I ended up having to reset my sister's phone because it flashed the recovery incorrectly.
Download the rom of your choice and its associated gapps package. Put them on your sd card
Boot into recovery. You will need to use TWRP's mechanisms to wipe/factory reset the phone. Then wipe cache and dalvik cache.
Install the zip of the rom and then immediately afterward install the gapps package. I usually wipe the cache and dalvik cache again for good measure at this point, but I understand it is not needed.
Reboot the phone. If all went well, it will take awhile to boot, but you will be sitting at the start screen of a brand new shiny rom.
Set it up and start using it. Most roms already come rooted.
The reason rooting isn't required using this method is because the download mode of the T989 essentially gives you root priviledges.
I've used this process on two T989 phones without any error. If you want to backup your phone, do that in step 3 _before_ you wipe/factory reset your phone.
Usually what I do is just use Odin to flash ClockworkMod then copy the ROMS to the sdcard. Boot into recovery then install zip from SD Card, select ROM. If you use CyanogenMod then just select your device and Google search the cyanogenmod gapps

[Q] [NOOB] Flashing new ROM from stock GB27 ROM

I've been running CM11 nightlies for a while now, but recently decided to switch back to the dreaded touchwiz, as some apps weren't operating correctly. I used CWMR to restore the backup I had made previous to installing CWM. Booting up revealed many processes failing during the setup process, as well as the absence of the keyboard. Being a bit noobish, I installed a stock rom/recovery, hoping that would fix the issues. It did not. It stalls at "Just a sec..." before Setup Wizard quits and it loops indefinitely. Problem is I now can't flash a new rom or restore. I've tried installing cwm with no luck since, but take this with a grain of salt as I was admittedly a bit panicky during. Any help is greatly appreciated.
So are you still looking to restore or find any method to have your device boot up again...?

Yes. I've had no luck the past few days with it. Might give up on it if I can't get it working.
Head to rwilco12's website and under downloads for the Galaxy S II Sprint SPH-D710, Download the Odin OneClick of the stock rooted GB27, You can choose between deodexed or odexed, pick your poison, note that choosing Full Restore wipes internal and No_Data preserves internal storage.
Put device in download mode and restore.
Once you've fully restored, Download AGAT's gb27 source recovery and flash via recovery flasher on device or Odin on PC. Start up into recovery and try restoring your GB27 ROM again. I remember there being a guide when flashing back and forth from cm to tw and there was a specific way you had to restore it, I've lost the thread but still looking for it for you.
But until then, try the Odin one click method and see where it flies there
