[Q] Confused about ability to flash second recovery - 8.9" Kindle Fire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This post says that any Kindle Fire HD 8.9 with software after 8.3.0 cannot have a second recovery flashed. But the top sticky on the Dev board says it's for 8.4.6 (my software). Am I missing something? Can I flash it or not? It seems to be tricky either way, but I can't tell if I am even supposed to be able to.

8.3.0 is when the exploit was patched. 8.4.6 what you need if you're firmware is 8.4.6 to do the mod so there is a match. You will use the stack override and the 7.2.3 bootloader to make sure the exploit takes place on a bootloader that had not yet been patched. Make sure to drag and drop a ROM on your SD card first just in case.

In almost all the websites I found that once TWRP got installed properly then the yellow triangle will appear during reboot. But am unable to see that during reboot.
But am able to see kindle fire with blue color, instead of the ellow Triangle
could someone help me out in this?

how do you know that TWRP got installed if you can't see the bootloader icon? Maybe try a different version of KFU, 0.9.5 works for me. Also be sure that your KFU recognizes your kindle when it's plugged in. The ADB status should say ONLINE in the main menu window.
Try this video on how to root 6.3.1 it works for me perfectly fine just make sure you follow all of the steps word for word. Just go to YouTube and type in "how to root kindle fire nat3mil" I would have posted a link but I'm new so it won't let me post links.

Yeah, this should be the version of Fire Fire Fire (1.4a) that was installed with KFU 0.9.6. There is a slight bug in the load up that will require you to tap the power button a few times to be able to switch between loaders (Normal, Recovery, Fast). Hashcode knows of it but it's not really a priority at this point since it's not causing anyone issues getting in to Recovery. Just a couple extra taps of the power button does the trick.
If you're looking to do a full wipe of the stock rom, make sure you clear cache, dalvik cache and do a factory reset.
I got to know that its bcoz of firefirefire am unable to see the yellow triangle. Now I flashed using the prerooted stock Rom. Installed play store. Working gr8... thanks for all those replied...

Rooted Amazon Kindle Fire with KFU Utility
Hey guys just wanted to give a little input. I was able to use the KFU utility ( the newest version ) and it worked just fine. I now have the Recovery installed TWRP but flashed Clockwork Recovery and all works. I'm looking to flash a 4.0 ICS version but haven't found the right source or file. Maybe I can be lead in the right direction. Thanks in advance! !!! Also uploading pic:

I also had problems with the latest KFU. I was left with 'partially' rooted device. I installed superuser.apk after that and now it's OK. I can even temporary unroot it to using OTA RootKeeper. AFAIK the only way to watch Amazon Prime videos is to temporary unroot the device.

I highly suggest you do not use ClockWorkMod Recovery with the Kindle Fire. It has been known to cause the Kindle to brick. Stick with TWRP even if you don't like it.
Unable to root! Stucked on TWRPP 2.2.0 Screen with several options
Hello,
I've tried to root my Kindle fire using KFU 0.9.6)
However, when the KFU is processing the rooting, the kindle restarts and stucks itself on the TWRPP Screen with several options (Install, Backup, Restore...) and the KFU software shows a message of Please wait.
Does anyone know how to move on with the rooting?
Thanks in advanced

From Original thread:
Hi all, some of you may have seen my utility over in the de-bricking thread. My goal at this point is to try and make lives easier for everyone I can.
So what I have done is created a script that can be used to handle a lot of common things people may want, and I will continue to add things people request that I think would be easy, and beneficial. I just wanted to make this situation easier for the average person.
You will see how the tool detects you at the default screen, and can refresh it by hitting 0 at any menu to have it refresh ADB/Fastboot and see what mode the kindle is in.
Currently the tool comes packaged with the drivers required to operate ADB and Fastboot.
Please note: If your device can't be seen in fastboot mode, please make sure to install the drivers packaged with this, as it will show up afterwards. You can use the install_drivers.bat with the device plugged in for this.
Usage should be straight forward for the tool. If you are having issues with something, this tool has a good chance of getting you back on track.

Hello.
I have a few questions.
Does matter what kind of USB cable I use? I have a Samsung one so I was wondering if I could use that. And to install Root itself you need the drivers right? Where do I get the drivers for 6.3.2? After it recognizes the kindle I just click the root option and... Kaboom right!!? Lol.
Thank you for your help.

You need to run install_drivers.bat the run kfu and select root with your device connected in normal mode. The drivers should be universal with any ROM. Also, as long as the cable you are using is a micro-usb it should work I use an HTC cable and it works.

So for the dual boot, does this just set up the partitions, and then I can go install the two ROMs in recovery? Or does it also install two previously downloaded ROMs?

The dual boot installs the modified boot loader and resizes the partitions. Then you need to flash altrom-format-all.zip. When I update next I'll put more info in the readme

TWRP 2.6.0.0 Install

I was on TWRP 2.4.0.0 and CM10.1. Just upgraded to TWRP 2.6.0.0 by flashing the zip file. However, in recovery, the version says 2.4.4.0, not 2.6.0.0.
Anybody has a similar situation?
Sorry I still cannot post on the dev section so I have to post this here.
But many thanks to Hashcode!
I don't know bout the 8.9 inch model, but the other da when he released the 7 inch model version, he had a 1 character typo in the zip file somewhere, and it was acting like a successful flash, and it really wasn't flashing anything. Maybe it happened on the 8.9 inch version too and you got a release from before the fix or something. Maybe hashcode will see this and respond.
Edit: wait your recovery jumped from 2.4.0.0 to 2.4.4.0? I missed that when I first read the post. Maybe u somehow dl'd the wrong one cause that's old.
Edit2: this is also appearing on his thread. I'd follow it and see what he says.

Wow, thanks for the tip. Just spent 30 mins trying to figure out adb so I could update my Kindle Fire TWRP to 2.6.
My goomanager kept downloading 2.6 and telling me that it was installed successfully, but then when I rebooted it was still 2.1.1 or 2.2.1 or whatever it was.
Flashify did the trick in 15 seconds.
Thanks again.

I've been trying last night and today, and it won't work. The version is 6.3.3. Drivers are fine, shows up as Android Composite ADB Interface in device manager on windows 7. I can access the Kindle as a drive on my PC. When I run Kindle Fire Utility 0.9.9, it reports
ADB Status: Online
Boot Status: Unknown.
If I try to either manually set fastboot with option 1 Bootmode Menu, or try to "Install Permanent Root with Superuser" option 2, it has
Installing Permanent Root
Activating Fastboot (4002)
5090 KB/s (510876 bytes in 0.09x) then this:
couldn't write bp1, panic!
finds twrp.img, and downloads fff.bin. Then the kindle reboots, KFU says "Installing FFF..." and <waiting for device>.
But then does nothing, even after I swipe the lock and go back into file transfer mode on the kindle.
Anything I try to do reports "couldn't write bp1, panic!" on KFU. I have another kindle that rooted fine, this one just refuses to.
Any ideas?

Yes, I actually had 2 of them that rooted fine. They are all KF HD 7" First Generation. This one just won't. I'm now working with the KF First Aide tool kit, and I now get SU: ACCESS DENIED or something like that. Communication with ADB is fine, there's a permission issue somewhere I can't figure out.

Could you point me in the direction of what versions of jellybean/kindle fire utility to use? i have tried using kf utility 0.9.9 and i have the same issue as you where it says the device is online but the boot status is unknown. Thx for the help.

Awww crapola. Nevermind. All I knew was that both of them were on 6.3.3, so I thought that was what they've always been on. Bzzzzt. The one that was working still has the adw launcher installed, but it doesn't have root any more. So THAT'S why KFU doesn't work on this new one.
They are my girlfriend's kids' kindles, and I told her not to ever update them, but I guess this one was pushed out.
So.... how long until theres a root kit for 6.3.3?

Didn't brick it, but didn't work either. The apk installs just fine, but when I click the "make it rain" button that says the device will reboot, nothing happens. The device does not reboot, and is not rooted. I tried rebooting the kindle and trying again with the same result. I guess I now fit the definition of insanity.

And... tried V2 of towelroot this morning. Still no worky-worky.
Somebody get a straitjacket.
Old rooting methods not working yah...
What I have done -
1. fastboot using factory cable
2. install TWRP+FFF with KFU
3.flash modified pre-rooted ROM
If Amazon continues updating 1st gen, not sure there are lots of enthusiasts, who would continue rooting it. Thus decided to switch to alternative ROM. Well, stock is better for battery etc... etc... but as I do also have HDX and most of time use it, having stock ROM on 1st gen is not as crucial for me.
According to this post (and the post above^^), if you have a factory cable (special cable used to power on in bootloader mode), you can revert to a custom recovery and bootloader and then flash a 6.3.2 ROM. Problem then is avoiding another OTA.

no toot for 6.3.3, cmd other otherwise
To root new update 6.3.3, you need a fastboot/factory cable, adb/ fastboot.exe files, FFF bootloader.bin, twrp.img, and my prerooted 6.3.3 zip
Kindle Fire Utility does not work with 6.3.3 update
