[GUIDE] How to ask questions, and how to answer. - About xda-developers.com

Hello XDA, first guide here.
First off, this guide may be weird, but I've seen some people asking questions without giving information and others simply cannot answer them. At the same time, some users answers questions, but is not "complete", and in this guide, I aim to guide people to ask good questions and answer brilliantly, to request for help and to help others more easily.
Questions:
I've seen too many threads that don't provide enough information for others to help. You have to provide different information in different situations, and some examples will be listed.
A) Bootloop (most common problem)
1) Phone model (International? LTE variant? ATT/Sprint/T-Mobile/Verizon?
2) Android Version
3) What were u trying to flash? (ROMs? Kernels?)
5) What resources do u have/can u access? (Recovery? Download mode? Nandroid backups?)
6) Elaborate explanation of what happened/what u did before the bootloop. (Symptoms, etc.)
B) Something's wrong with your phone.
1) Phone model (International? LTE variant? ATT/Sprint/T-Mobile/Verizon?
2) Android Version
3) What ROM/Kernel are u on? (Firmware number if you're on stock)
4) What methods did u use to try and solve the issue (if u even did)
5) Baseband number (IMEI issues)
6) Hardware names (CPU, etc.) (If u suspect it's a hardware problem.)
7) Elaborate your situation.
C) Just a random question.
1) your question.
2) ROM you're running.
3) kernel (if you're not on stock kernel)

How to answer questions?
When people answer questions, they may not have answered it fully and may cause some people to start flaming. This will tip u on how to answer questions clearly.
1) Understand the question and the situation the person is in. Some people answer blindly without reading the whole post, and they may cause confusing between users.
2) Make sure u know how to explain the steps to make it clear as to How to fix my phone.
3) Do not criticize users on how they Do not know the answers to a question. (This doesn't happen often, but it does.)
And this is again, my first guide: How to ask and questions. Any suggestions will be added to the OP. Suggestions as to how I can improve on my guides will be greatly appreciated.
P.S. Everything done on my phone lol

Thanks for the break down of this.
This was very helpful and informative.

What caused it? How did it happen.
It might help to have a list of causes list.
For myself, I touched the "Reboot" button in TWRP. Perhaps the designers can add a warning to that button?

thanks. helped me a lot to remember these things. Often I forgot to add important things and when I look at your list I can check before submit my thread :good:

Original OS of the Diamond

Hello everyone,
I hope I posted my first question here in the right area (if not, shame on me )
In the next few days my HTC Touch Diamond will arrive from Vodafone. I do not know if this is just in Germany but my last phone from Vodafone, a Sony Ericsson W810i, also had a "special" Vodafone-OS on it. On the W810i I was finally able to look up all the necessary information myself to make it a Vodafone-free phone. But as I read through all the available Wiki's, FAQs and other threads I am starting to see that this might be another level compared to what I have done before.
My questions concerning my new device are whether there is a possibility to change the "Vodafone-red-theme" to the original one which you also can see on HTC's homepage. Of course, the whole device should be in its original form, not just the theme, whereas the Vodafone-Services (SMS-Gateway and all the other service numbers which are needed to use the device). I think it is possible, maybe it has something to do with a "ROM-Upgrade" or so, as I have seen in a FAQ around here.
My other question is, of course, how to do that, what tools are needed etc.
In short, I need you to provide me the right link to a tutorial since here are so many and I do not know which one to take (and I do not want to screw up the device).
I hope that you can help me, if I accidentally posted this thread in the wrong forums might a moderator please be so kind to move it to the right section and notify me of my fault.
Thanks in advance and greetings from Germany (or Bavaria, to be more exact )
Zuzler
We'll let you off!
Yes, you are in the wrong section... you should be in the 'Diamond ROM development' section, but everyone is allowed one mistake (Except, myself... I have infinite mistake allowance!)
My device was vodafone branded when I got it, and that's the first thing I wanted to get rid of too.
First you need to 'Hard SPL', which unlocks the device so you can flash any ROM you wish. Then just flash your required ROM. I would highly recommend AZTOR's X2 Ultimate. He has the philosophy of keeping the ROM as close to the original stock ROM as possible, only better, stronger, faster... like the bionic man (I'm showing my age now!!).
Everything you need is in this tutorial. I followed it to the letter, and now my device is everything it should be. It's always very nerve racking the first time you flash your device, but what ever happens, there's some sharp wizard in this forum with the knowledge to get you out of the brown stuff... have fun
Hi grahamkdt,
thanks for you reply. I already thought after submitting that it would have been better to post this in the development area. I will contact a Mod immediately to solve that.
Thank you for the recommendation about the ROM, but there is still one problem for me:
Should I upgrade the "Radio" first, since in the tutorial you gave to me it is step B. Or is this just a prerequisite to not breaking anything? Are there also different versions?
Regards,
Zuzler

Wow thanks, I also contacted tnyynt for that

I can't remember if AZTOR's ROM's include the radio. It might be worth flashing a radio first from here. I use Radio v1.09.25.23 (Quad Band) (52.51.25.26H) - no issues at all.
Or, you could ask AZTOR if radio is included in his ROM's if you're really concerned. Personally I'd just flash one first anyway...
Ok, I will ask him personally (just seen hes from Germany, too - might make some things easier)
Thanks again!

Root and SIM Unlock complied by dataSaMm

Hi all,
It took me some time to get my phone Rooted and SIM Unlocked so I have decided to put my findings below.
Phone which I used for this post: Samsung Galaxy Y S5369, files for S5360 is also available.
Root:
Copy update.zip to SD Card
Turn off the mobile phone
Hold up volume key, home button and power button together for few seconds
Locate the update.zip and follow the easy steps
Sim Unlock
Copy Galaxy Toolbox to you your storage card
You can use ES File Explorer to find and run the application
Follow the easy instructions from the application to complete the process
I will give credits where it's due, please check here again later as I need to go through the sources again.
update.zip was retrieved from GeekDashboard.
Galaxy Toolbox was retrieved from Play Store.
There like 100 treads with this same information but thanks for the effort I guess

I think there are still many people who don't know how to root, sometimes it's nice to see the same information in a different point of view which can enable a person to try again.

I found many threads with too much information which just overloads a user. I kept this thread to minimal, plus another reason for creating this post was because my model was different compared to the standard model that everyone else got in UK.
Anyway, this post was intended to help people.

Well that makes sense but when a phone has been around as much as the SGY this issue gets tackled alot first root comes (probably b4 the phone is even released) but the original post might be confusing so someone dumbs it down and that continues the longer a phone is out the more treads for that issue pop up....BUT and u should have put that in your tread relating to the UK thing since I know with my phone (s5360l) there isn't a tread on rooting it off u search you'll find the file for s5360 which didn't work in my phone how I found the file was by happenstance viewing a tread on s5360 and someone happened to have a s5360l and got someone to convert the file to s5360l and post it but other than that single comment on a tread there's no root information on my phone I've wanted to start a tread for a while but problem is I can't remember the guy's name who converted it not to mention that for a period I was on s5360 firmware so I also have the s5360 and the s5360l update file and I don't know which 1 is the correct file lol
Hi, thanks for the easy guide, is the unlock permanent or does lock again if using the software update option on the phone?
unlock is permanent but i think its better to use the unlocker from the real developer u can find the newest one in playstore.
While Galaxy Toolbox is free and available from Play Store, to avoid unexpected threats and have the latest release, I recommend to download it from the original source: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.doky.sgtoolbox

Welcome.
First - and this is important - there is no such thing as a best ROM.
It's too subjective. What suits one user will not necessarily suit another. There are no shortcuts - you've got to try them yourself. Nearly every custom ROM has an introductory description anyway.
Rooting - here is everything you need to know. Read every word, and don't even think of installing before you read every word again. And again. And again.
It's not that hard - just read. Post again if you have problems.

Thanks man for this help
Sorry for interrupting, but what are the factors that make a Rom good, how i can measure when i trying each one ?
To be honest if u do not know, stay stock. It's quite decent.
Since u are still new to this phone, you won't be able to tell immediately the improvements of custom roms and stock roms.
Rooting is not illegal. But it does void warranty. So far I have not seen or heard ppl getting arrested or charged in court for rooting.

A few tips-
1) Change your thread title to something a bit more descriptive. The one and only reason someone's going to read your thread is sheer, morbid curiosity/boredom.
2) Punctuation is your friend. Disoriented rambling is not. As written, your post is painful and confusing to read.
The bottom line is, if you want help, you have to be willing and able to make it easy for those in a position to provide you with assistance to do so.
Now then, as best I can tell, you want to learn how to root and flash a rom? Coincidentally, there just happens to be a stickied thread at the top of this forum that has a step by step guide for what you're looking to do. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1828635

Nexus has become sluggish after recent update (how should I restore or root?)

I'm trying to fix my cousin's galaxy nexus that was bought new a few months ago. It's jus that after the recent system update, his whole phone has become sluggish, and it doesn't feel right. I must admit that I've never owned an Android device (neither has he) so we both really don't know how to fix it or restore the phone. I looked in the development section but its just so overwhelming, not sure what I should be looking for or trying out..
Can someone please point this beginner in the right direction? I read that the latest update was causing problems and people installed the "stock version" on their phones, which made it better, but I don't know I how I would go about doing that.
I'd appreciate some feedback thanks!
Android version: 4.2.1
Do you need the baseband, kernel version, build number?
This isn't a support site so you're going to need some self reliance.
This is a good starting point.

I know this is not a support site but this is the section to ask for help, isn't it? I read through that sticky but it doesn't necessarily explain how I would go about restoring me phone to install a stock copy of the latest Android..I really don't want to mess up this phone so that is why I want to confirm everything before I try to load something onto it.
If you scroll to the 2nd post in that thread there's a link to a guide to return to stock as well as a guide to root.

Best way to make it quick is to earse everything like I did after owning my Nexus for 1 yr. Back up everything that needs backing up on a computer.
But the New 4.2 update is pretty heavy and causes lag. Also having low storage space can cause it to slow down too I think.
Here's what I recommend. Root it. Have u done that yet? If not I'll help. It's REALLY easy. Only four commands(I believe) and a driver for adb and fastboot and the SUfile and the recovery.img.
This will EARSE everything. So you'll be fresh. And then put ur freshly backed up stuff back on the phone.

If I have helped you.... hit that sexy thanks button. ^_^
