I really don't get what the fuss is about this theme, ok so credit should be given where it's due I'm not arguing, but surely all that's required in this instance is "here's my theme - parts are borrowed from here and here, what do you think?" is sufficient.
It's ridiculous that we even feel the need to debate this, someone went out and built a theme they liked, and decided they would share it with the rest of us, something they did not need to do! Instead of saying thanks, we've shut down a thread because it wasn't precise enough about where it's components were found!
Regarding this theme, i love it, i think it almost perfectly combines the best parts of other themes and apart from the splash screen which i rarely see, makes my phone look great. I can't ask the developer to improve the theme now though thanks to a debate about a couple of icons! fantastic!

i agree...the thread should be re opened because there is nothing wrong with his theme or how it was created. if you close his then you should close alot others because i know of 3 themes that share the EXACT same clock as the hybrid theme and a few icons and i dont see any reference to whee there clock and icons came from on there thread. everyone is not gonna have a completely different theme, clock, and set of icons. so IMO as long as he acknowledges that he made his theme from a combination of others i feel it is sufficient because whose to sat who FIRST created the black transparant clock that 3THEMES share and icons. as long as he is not saying he created the whole theme from scratch and taking all the cedit then whats the problem? nobody is payin for these themes so its not like he's getting anything from it besides happy hackers who love his work!

If you are referring to the black carbon fiber clock, the actual clock was posted by brandenk in a thread where he gave permission for anyone to use it.

Ok, but there are still a number of themes that share some the same icons and dont give credit to one another.

I do feel that shutting the thread down is the wrong decision...if that is the case, then I want the "Post ONLY your G1 Wallpapers here!" threat shut down...I know for a fact, that there is a Guinness wallpaper on there that I created and uploaded to g1wallz.com that is posted under someone elses name and no credit is given to me. I never really b!tched about it because I dont really care (I posted it on the www afterall, if it was that important to me I would have just kept it to myself)...but if we are going to get picky about giving recognition and asking for permissions then...

Some examples may be helpful, some of us have gotten icons from each other and some from deviantartbut I know the staff doesn't have time to go through every theme that shares something so examples may be needed

Ok here's a simple solution to give credit to all that's do credit.

Now how many people have used google to search an item to recreate? not all are graphic masters and not all while trying to develop something remembers their sources.
I personally thank all theme makers and others for their hard work!!!

With that said, I am here to help and learn. We are what make this phone awesome, not Google, not HTC, not T-mobile, and not any 1 person. I am truly honored anytime you guys use my components in your own themes, if I didnt I would not bother to make them.
If you guys cant understand that imitation is the highest form of flattery all I can say is go watch Star Trek, I learned this lesson from Data on TNG years ago and it has served me very well. Granted, i love it when you guys mention my name if you use my clock but Im not going to be offended if you dont. Especially since the clock wasnt "my idea". Im sure there are a million people out there that could argue they created something very similar way before me, and to them all I have to say is thank you for the great idea and I hope you appreciate my hard work to take your "idea" to the next level.
My ideal scenario would be everyone taking bits and pieces from themes they like and compiling them into a theme that is perfect for them.

Do you know how many of them probably got their icons from the same source? I know some of the themes were yes, obviously borrowed icons, but others were just coincidence. The whole point of open source is that anyone, can take anything anyone makes, change some ****, and create something totally new. Yes, they SHOULD provide credit, but its not key.
Simply put, if you don't want people to use your ideas, do NOT post them. Simple as that. Any moderator that finds the need to close a thread for that purpose is just, well lack for a better word, dumb.
Now to the theme makers directly, I thank them for all the work they put into the themes, it is a lot of work. However they aren't doing it for us, its for them. I wouldn't create a theme based on what everyone else will want, I'd make one that I like, I enjoy, then later post it here to allow others to use it.
So everyone, stop *****ing, stop complaining, and just enjoy what everyone has to offer.

I used that very same clock in my theme and I credited brandenk for it, what tootall4la is doing is wrong. Some people put allot of work into creating these themes, the least he could do is say thanks to brandenk for his clock and what not. Also, I think he got a complete lack of respect for others. Here's a quote when someone suggested he give credit to other people for using their work to create his "Frankenstein"

which is just the brushed metal I created for my Macdroid theme and there's plenty of other stuff he used and never gave a thanks for it. I'm not trying to be a jerk but it is common courtesy to give a thanks.

Open the thread most of the themes contain parts of other themes,I know cause I can see my work all over but that does not matter. Hey guys I also say anything I have done as far as themes can be used with out giving me credit or permission if you want to give credit that would be better but its cool with me either way.
Its not like google or T-Mobile even gave permission to do this lol....I love forum.

Well....this is indeed a touchy subject. I Believe the thread should be reopened as well but.....I agree with Geo411. There does seem to be a lack of respect for other authors. There are authors on here such as Manup and Brandek that do not care, but that does not go for everyone. I for one dont really care for my own theme, but I love and respect all who have contributed to the community and wish that we do give credit to others that worked so hard and actually wanted to be recognized for it. It really does not take that much time to type out a few lines of recognition....Reopen the thread once recognition has been given.

Unless his attitude changes tootall4la will keep hitting a brick wall.
G1 is a fine line with "crediting" sources, since it is open-source.
Although, common courtesy of a thank you to all, is humane, a nice juster.
As for tootall4la's thread to reopen, noticing most theme makers dont mind whether they get credit or not, tootall4la should figure out who he should thank and PM him or them and work it out.
My opinion on this matter doesnt mean a thing. Since im not the mod who closed the thread, i wont be the mod to reopen it without assurance from all, that it's ok to reopen it.

Very Well Put... This Would Really Help Solve All This Madness. and i noticed they shut down the thread but i havent seen ONE post supporting keeping the thread closed which should make a point to the moderators that just because ONE person may have a problem, what ablout the rest of the people on the forums who IMO majority doesn't have a problem and wants the thread re opened.

Agreed, and it is personal taste. As a rule of thumb I think communities like this function more on sharing than owning content so if you want to own your content this community probably isnt the place for you. That said, I would like to encourage the sharing aspect of the community and remember, even tho I dont mind anyone using my components, when I get a thank you it goes a long way. Sometimes its a simple "ty" other times its someone buying me a beer, either way the more I get from you guys for my hard work the more willing I am to bust my balls trying to improve things for you guys.

One Q; if the site really cared if we got credit then why is there no thank you button which would solve the problem. When you drop your theme you can be thanked and get your credit automatic.
Anyway a theme section is what's really needed not people fighting about themes who's icons belong to another designer,does anybody ask them permission?
Keep the piece guys it not that serious I would take what ever part of the theme that the other person is complaining about. Tell me what it is and ill make one for you,but I hope this is not going to be your only theme. I want to see some more work after this original.

Hey I also don't mind if people use/improve my theme, what I'm referring to was the improper etiquette used. Here's a PM from a user on the forum asking if he can improve upon my theme. This is proper etiquette.

I tried making the brushed metal darker and it doesn't look right. It blended in to much with the rest of the menu icons and made thing harder to see. Well give it a shot perhaps you can make it look better than I did.

I know what you mean. I tried different ways with photoshop to just change yours and make it darker but it doesnt come out right at all. It looks more bluish gray if anything.

I agree with this, if it wasn't for JF finding loopholes to root or Stericson for sharing what he discovered we about theming, we wouldn't be here modding our phones in the first place.

[THEME] Robotech - Macross JFv1.5 Hv1.5r3

Built this theme upon request by a friend who recently bought a G1 from me. Being a huge fan myself I had a lot of fun w/ this one =) Features JrBourque's red VK. If anyone wants a port, this can be done relatively easy so feel free to throw that out there if interested.

Aight. Decided to make the switch this evening so I ported my latest theme over. Ended up ranting bout a bunch of stuff that came to my mind after the icons of this theme were criticized. Here is the link and screen shots to spare anyone not interested bout the rant lol. To give credit where credit is due, I compiled JrBourque's Red VK into this build. Anyone who need's a custom VK should hit him and Diaztradeinc up asap. Quality stuff fo sho.

Thus far, posting this las night (in Hv1.5 form) I've only gotten one post of criticism regarding the icons... but I don't really care. I'm open to constructive criticism within my means and MO, but I'm not here to please absolutely everyone. I enjoy making these things, have a zillion different ideas for themes that I'd like to see on my own phone and will continue to post them up as I make them, for whomever might be interested in them (no point in keeping them to myself).
This criticism over my icons put a lot on my mind today so I suppose I'll take the opportunity to put it out there. There seem to be 2 destinctive types of themes to me - Graphic driven themes and Subject driven themes. By graphic driven theme I mean those like Aero and Gloss that are based on no subject but built from scratch, open completely to unique artistic creation to no end. By subject driven themes, well, that's self explanatory (IE Mario, X-men, Punisher, Spider-Man, Gambit, Megaman, Robotech etc. etc. etc.).
Don't expect any of my themes to be graphic driven themes. Subject matter inspires me to build these themes, not graphic design, and I really don't see that changing anytime soon. I really only do this for the enjoyment of seeing my work and particular subjects come to fruition and don't have much interest in pushing my graphic art skills beyond where they currently are. I'd consider my graphic art skills intermediate at best. My skills are not nearly up to par w/ other designers on here. I'm far more inspired to see themes based on my favorite comic books and anime (among other potential mediums) come to fruition than I am to take the time to create unique and original designs. I'm in constant awe of what other members create and share w/ the community. I'm not in this for competition or comparison. I'll let peeps do their thang while I do mine. Jus in this for my own personal enjoyment and there's no point in keeping the fruits of my labors to myself if anyone else is ever interested in running it themselves.
To speak more directly regarding my feelings about icons representing the individual apps instead of the subject matter... in building a subject driven theme, I feel if the icons don't represent the subject in particular, they aren't nearly as interesting. I guess I think of it in the terms of what a Desktop theme would look like (because, Android really is a miniaturized desktop afterall). Even if I extracted a calculator (for example) from the source of the subject (like a calculator that appears in an episode of Robotech in this case), it wouldn't be recognizable as representation of that subject unless it were a character holding a friggin calculator or something. And if an icon like that was made you really wouldn't see the calculator once the image was scaled to the small size that the system icons are.
My work being criticized as though it should be similar to other themes in this regard bothered me enough that I guess I felt compelled to rant and explain my point of view, (and if you're readin this, naw man, I'm still not offended, jus put a lot on my mind). Anyways. This thing is long enough I suppose lol

If I wasn't at such a loss for source material I would have. I'm not kidding. About 80 or 90 google image search pages later I was still at square 2 where in previous endeavors id be at square 6.
Besides, I DO honestly strive for that (my settings icon in my Megaman theme being a good example of that, it was the start menu of MM2), however, I compare my work to that of a couple other cats on here and their icons aren't too particular to the individual apps either.
I agree. It would be REALLY sweet to be able to be that specific but the truth of the matter is I'm decent w/ Gimp (photoshop clone, much better), but I'm no ace by any means. There aren't enough pictures out there to do such a thing in the way id prefer. Calendar/calculator for example. Don't know if either ever appeared in a robotexh episode but if they did, even though it was taken from robotech it wouldn't feel in accordance w/ the theme cuz it wouldn't be familiar looking at all nor would it be destinctively related to the subject matter.
Sorry for the novel lol. You touched a softspot for me, not in a way that I'm offended at all, more like I WISH I COULD make the icons in stronger accordance w/ the individual apps but it's just not possible.
Id actually be curious to see someone else's attempt at such. Do you know of a charicter/show/whatever based theme that's been able to pull this off well? If so you should point me in that direction so I can scope it out

Ha ha ha. FUNNY thing you mention that. I just decided this evening to start workin on a Cowboy Bebop theme. The robotech theme was on my list and when my friend bought a G1 from me and said "hey you should make a robotech theme" I took that as a sign. Now a dif friend is buyin a G1 from me on Sat and said "hey you should build a cowboy bebop theme" (which was also on my list =)) followed just a few hours later by "man a Samurai Champloo theme would be awesome too" lol. So I'm thinking at this point w/ 2 people already requesting both, both being on my list, that I can't make one w/ out doing the other ha ha. Once my Cowboy Bebop theme is done and released I'll def have to dive into Samurai Champloo as well ha ha.
Oh and, no wipe necessary. What build are you running? If you're runnin Haykuro's 1.5 jus flash it and it should update fine (in which case you'd want to grab the Hv1.5 theme on the other thread). Same w/ JF's too. =)

Ah perfect! Damn i wish i would have known this earlier to beat your friend and have you make the Samurai Champloo first but a man can wait I'm running JF1.51 ADP. So maybe you can work on it... whenever you're done a nice thank you will be heading your way

Yeah. there are some major complications regarding 1.51 US that I wasn't really wanting to get into. I'll prolly look into it further but ultimately the only real dif between 1.5 and 1.51 was MyFaves and Amazon for me so I decided against updateing. And from what I understand, flashing a theme built on 1.5 onto 1.51 US doesn't really work right =(. If someone figures out an easy way to extract the framework-res.apk I might jump on board. Otherwise I might actually look into 1.51 UK (which is also compatible w/ the JF1.5 themes that I'm constructing I do believe). I'm pretty sure that the only thing dif about US and UK is that the US f/w has My Faves, which isn't really a big deal since you can adjust your faves (if you even have any) using t mo's website.

heh, CbBb, my all-time favorite anime/show/whatever. I was thinking of one a while back, thought of making it real subtle, in-so-that only a fan would know it was anime/Cowboy Bebop. Heavy use of the opening credit style, pictures of the swordfish, profile silhouettes, etc etc etc.

Yeah it took me, literally HOURS to find a good element to use as the menu background, I ended up using a contour from the opening credits that actually worked pretty well =)

yeah man. I actually think you'll be in good shape then. Pretty sure the US build is the only one w/ that issue. If you flashed this robotech theme (or the Megaman one I ported for JF 1.5 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=515742 ) that'll tell ya whether this CbBb theme and the SC theme to follow will work or not =) using the same template to build these.

Naw I was actually thinkin of goin Green for the Samurai Champloo one. there are some graphics I remember seeing around the net I'm already thinking of incorporating into the theme lol. I can't help myself. Just can't stop. Haven't been able to get any more than 5 hours of sleep a night and have been completely exhausted but still can't seem to pull myself away from my computer lol.

If i knew how to create a theme i would help you out, but I'm dumb and useless so expect a lot this *shakes fist* If you do something wrong, and i feel your pain about sleeping 5 hrs a night. I'm about to go on for four :/ and then wake up to school :/

Theme Idea Anyone?

I know there is already an entire thread dedicated to this but I felt like creating one for my own purposes. Lock, delete, flame, piss, moan if you want to. This is just a simple request for a request.
I need an idea for a theme but I need it to be a bit more specific than those I see floating around in the theme request thread. A lot of them request things by name like "starcraft" or "Bad Religion" and I have no idea what those are. So, I'm just asking for someone to make a request, specify colors if they want, link me to an image or two so I can get an idea of what you want and add any other details you feel will help flesh out your vision. I'm not the best themer here but I love to do graphic design and I see theming as a way to improve and polish my skills. And its fun. But please no sports teams or halo. Those are just waaay to overdone. Maybe not here on Android but elsewhere for sure. Thanks.

aqua alien by prash looks like a homosexual pokemon theme - take that design and make it better with like some robotic tech theme. whites and blues are always great combo. take smorg stuff for glossy sleek looks. thanks.

aqua alien by prash looks like a homosexual pokemon theme - take that design and make it better with like some robotic tech theme. whites and blues are always great combo. take smorg stuff for glossy sleek looks. thanks.

just for that, im gonna apologize to you. your work is excellent and you're a good sport. the colors you used are real sleek, but the whole alien pokemon look didn't flow well

Wow. There's enough icons in the Tango icon theme to skin app icons, buttons, and even the emoticons. I may just use these to make a Ubuntu theme .

Yeah I'm gonna do it, but not with the official Tango icons, instead I'm gonna use the Unabashed Tango Theme. It's not the official Tango theme but it's close enough. It even has 48x48 icons.

I google'd this (via images) and checked out some images and liked what I saw but reading down I see someone already beat me to beginning work on an Ubuntu theme. I may just work on one anyway simply because I really liked the images I saw.
Also, I like the Left 4 Dead one for the Pre. I'll see how much I can dig out of it and make it a straight port for you, doing as little myself as possible to it to keep it how you saw it on your friends Pre. Thanks for the responces. I really appreciate that.

By the way, I see a lot of pictures of what I think is a Moose mixed in with the Ubuntu images. Is this animal related and should I make wallpapers with it?

I love Hellsing. I'll give that a go once I finish Ubuntu.

black notification bar and when slid down its semi transparent. app draw icon to open is 100% transparent, when slide open semi trnsparent. with this design on both notification bar and app draw like the one in in Minus for cyanogens 4.0.4.
with hero icons.

you want to create something revolutionary that everybody will want to use, yet you don't know what it is and you are asking for ideas :/
if you truly want to do something for WM community, don't waste your time on yet another home screen or shell replacement. We have plenty of those already.
Create a framework so that other developers could code apps around. Make that framework flexible, look good, light and fast. Maybe even extend .NETCF35 with a new UI widgets.

I just thought it would be nice to have something i wanna use. I avoid my tp2 if i can. I upgraded from the original so i can say they both suck. I worked very hard to get them phones and wm just keeps letting me down and down again. all i want is a flippin nice music player. That's it, i can't even find that so yeah I'm gonna make my own. So what at least i can do something like that. Can you?
