My brother has an S3 on AT&T running a nightly build of CyanogenMod 11.
It's been running this build for a while. However, he was on it today, and it crashed. Now it won't even try to boot unless you take out the battery and put it back in, in which it will show the samsung logo and shut off. It won't boot into recovery, it won't boot into download mode.
I'm thinking it's hard bricked, but why would it randomly hard brick itself like this? And is there any way to fix it?
Maybe it bricked because some files got corrupted? Not sure. If you can get into recovery, try wiping the cache, data, and Dalvik. If that doesn't work, you could try an updated CM11 ROM.
Did you try to get into download mode with a USB jig?
Its not hard bricked. Boot it into download mode and Odin back to stock

Don't use desktop Odin if the phone has been updated via an OTA update to stock AT&T 4.3 ROM.
I'm the brother with this problem, I just couldn't post at the time.
Anyway, I can't boot it into anything. not recovery, not download mode, nothing. The only way I can force it to even try to boot is to take the battery out, and back in.
After this, "Samsung" appears for all of about a second, and it shuts off again.
Edit: it seems I can boot into download mode, but like the samsung logo, it disappears. It's almost as if it's crashing after a second each time. Any ideas?

After wiping data and factory resetting the phone everything was still working fine. I decided to format the data and system via clockwork mod but after that the phone hangs on the Galaxy S3 logo. I tried flashing a stock rom through Odin and it passed but the phone still hangs at the S3 logo. I haven't sat and waited for half an hour but I'm pretty sure it's still soft bricked. I can still get into recovery and download mode but the phone still wont boot up. I saw something about bootchains in another thread but I couldn't find anything for the T-Mobile variant. Anyone able to help?
Lock this thread. Solved the issue thanks to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1897181
Had to download the entire stock image from Samsung's site.
I just tried to load a new rom on to my phone. I used twrp to do a factory reset and now it wont turn on, at all. I wont even get to the splash screen. I've tried removing the battery and then turning on, no luck. I've also tried holding the keys to get into recovery mode, nothing works!!
Please tell me its not a brick!
which rom where you running
which rom are you trying to load

It really helps to know what ROM you were flashing, what method you used to flash, i/e ODIN flash then TWRP wipe, or TWRP zip install and wipe.
I would highly bet that you flashed an incompatible ROM, that was meant for another version of the S III, which would cause you to be in this current state. Which best case scenario you take it back to AT&T and tell them you were in the middle of using KIES to upgrade to the new OFFICIAL Jellybean, and your computer froze during the install, after which your phone never turned back on.
Second case scenario, you call up Samsung and get an RMA from them, wait 2-4 weeks and get your phone back, often times not having to pay the "fee" for repairing it.
Worst case scenario, you have a nice shiny new beer coaster. In which case you could mail to me and I could use it as such, as I am currently out of coasters.
Try using Odin to fix
1. Download Odin and stock ROM rooted
2. Put phone in Download mode (not recovery) by pressing and holding Vol Down + Home + Power
3. Open Odin on computer and load the ROM
4. Hit Start

I got it fixed. I had to pay some kid to JTAG repair it.
HELP! i'm running liquid smooth on my S3 right now. the phone has been having issues, shutting down on its own, and i was going to load the stock rom to send it in for warranty.
the last time i was able to use the phone, a message popped up saying "System UI has stopped working". later on, the phone shut down on its own and when i turn it on, it gets stuck on the liquid smooth boot screen forever. i plug it into the comp, still nothing.
is my phone dead at this pont?! any way i can load the stock rom onto it or get it back to functioning?!! argh!
You can always go to recovery and do a factory reset that should get you booting again with liquid smooth if you want to go back to stock boot into download mood and from your computer Odin back to stock. The links can be found in Android dev section.
To boot into recovery from phone off hold volume up+home+power and to boot to download volume down+home+power
Making the iPhone jealous one user at a time.
Sounds like a framework issues to me. I would backup your ROM and then clean install after factory reset and cache wipe from recovery.

If you can get in to a custom recovery. You can use this.

I use it from time to time. No pc, complete stock totally on the phone itself. You will still need to wipe your internal storage. I do that first.
I use Phil's recovery.

Hi XDA Forums,
I have a problem with my Note 2 for some reason.
Let me explain you what is wrong with my Note 2
I was sitting down and watching a movie, my phone was right next to me, The phone randomly turned off and after couple of second it had turned back on. It had showed the first every screen when you turn it on "Samsung Galaxy Note 2 N7100". Now from there it keeps on looping the same screen over and over again.
I had done some research before opening this thread, I saw that some people said I should try factory resetting it from the recovery mode, I then tried going on the recovery mode, it was not successful, it had showed me the same "Samsung Galaxy Note 2 N7100" screen and then repeated to boot loop it self again, I tried going on the recovery a couple of times but it didn't let me go on it.
Next I had then downloaded the 4.1.2 Official Firmware from SamMobile to flash it to stock again, I had then tried going on the Download Mode, It goes to the screen for Download Mode, but when I try pressing up to continue from the warning message it had then rebooted it itself and made it self stuck on the screen again.
Basically, my phone is stuck on boot loop, It does not let me access the recovery mode and it also does not let me access download mode.
ROM Using: Tigra_RomV3 4.3 Based ROM
Kernel Used: The Kernel which comes with the ROM or Stock, I didn't change the kernel myself.
If there is a internal problem does that mean I wont get help from the Warranty because the phone was rooted?
hello,
just try to use the jig, it should work...
use it so your phone will be in download mode, then flash your rom
Do you NANDROID backup? Maybe you may restore it by custom recovery.
Second, remove the battery first for a while and retry to access the RECOVERY and DOWNLOAD mode. If not, try the suggestion up there.
I did a search and maybe not correctly but I did not find my particular problem.
So I have stock root66 rom flashed with odin 3.11 on my phone goes into boot loop.
I flashed twrp 3.1.1-0 with odin and I can go into recovery but as soon as I select any rom (OCT-N-WEEKLY-20170811-1427-d2tmo) it starts to do something and just reboots the phone and back into the boot loop. I reboots to fast for me to even figure out what it says on the phone.
Has anyone else experienced this? Battery is charged to 80%+
edit: tried CWM same symptoms reboots right away. Only thing I can flash with is odin otherwise with any recovery reboots right away. I was able to flash a modem with twrp and that works but no roms work.
update 2: I finally was able to get root66 installed. Gets to the set up part. Once I finish the setup the phone turned off on its own. It never turns on on its own so leads me to believe the power button isnot stuck but why does it turn off on its own? I turned back on and goes into bootloop.
The power button may be stuck in the "pressed" position.
Have you tried TWRP 2.87? You're sure you are flashing the correct TWRP version for the phone?

Thanks for the reply. I have tried 6.0.1.2_CWM_Touch-recovery-image & twrp-3.0.2-0-d2tmo.img but not 2.87.
However, as I stated above I was able to flash a modem but just not flash any roms which is weird.
If the power button pressed and the phone reboots when i pull the battery and put back in wouldn't the phone turn back on? I'm just finding it odd the phone keeps rebooting but when I pull the battery and put back in it doesnt turn on automatically.
update: So 2.8.6 twrp worked which is odd installing as we speak phone has not rebooted yet so lets see how it does once rom is flashed. I did odin root66 and after that installed it kept rebooting so fingers crossed this works. Using OCT-N-WEEKLY-20170811-1427-d2tmo hopefully this works
so after the flash seems to just back to the bootloop. I'm still not convinced my power button is stuck since it doesnt auto turn on and during the whole process of flashing it didnt reboot on its own only after the flash. Any ideas?
Literally gets to the samsung galaxy siii logo and reboots right away.
Try flashing the latest stock ROM, not a rooted stock ROM.

same bootloop. Gets to the tmobile animation and then reboots.
It's possible that the memory chip is damaged. You could take it to a repair shop and have it flashed via jtag.
