Don't expect 4.4 anytime soon because of Verizon.
I'd be surprised if they released it before March. They're always missing target dates, especially with Verizon.
Just get VipperOne 4.4kk / 5.5 Sense, everything you could EVER imagine baked in. Best rom for m7vzw hands down. Try it. I've loaded most of the roms available for this phone, and this one blows everything else out of the water.

I don't understand why I would want all the extra stuff that is baked into ViperOne. Seeing that long list of "features" looks an aweful lot like bloatware to the uninitiated, like me. Right now I'm running TikTak which is pretty much stock Kit Kat. Would ViperOne suite the casual user, like me, better? Why?

Bloatware are apps you do not want. ViperOne allows you to not install any app that is packed with it during the install process.
The extra features you are talking about are all part of one app, Venom Tweaks. Which allows you to customize everything from kernel settings to the color of your notifications, screen layout sizes, really too much to list. But that is all contained inside of one app.
It also allows you to install entire custom themes, through Venom Hub.
There isn't really any bloatware at all added to the Rom, and it allows you to leave out anything you do not want during install. Like I remove HTC stocks, picasa, kid mode etc......all during the install from recovery. I would just recommend trying it if you own an htc one. I've run a crap ton of roms since i got my One, and i swear by it. Leaps and bounds beyond everything else I've run. And the Venom team is constantly updating with new features, and new mods are constantly being added to the Hub. Also comes with VenomSU baked in.
I'm running ViperOne 4.3.0, the newest Philz Touch CWM for m7vzw, and LunarX kernel for tap2wake and cpu tweaks. Love it.

It would be unprecedented for Verizon to update at the same time as other carriers. I don't expect our phones to make the Wednesday deadline.

Kitkat 4.4 is now in Finland. I am just installing it.
After all those articles saying this week
Engadget is reporting the update is now a couple of weeks away Certification process is taking longer than expected.
ugh - I'm too much of a noob to be allowed to post url
I have to say - this is one thing Apple got right - skip the carriers. (OK they got many things right - just wish Google was able to follow Apple's footsteps as far as OS updates)
You might be saying "why don't I root and use one of the kitkat ROMS available today" well it's simple. I just got notified by my place of work that rooted phones won't be allowed on the network I have no choice (at least if I want my phone to get corporate mail).

I really think the phone has unexplored potential and its puzzling to see it neglected. Im also wondering if there is a way to improve the standalone GPS performance on this rig.

ask Samsung if they can incorporate these features...

I'm busy with real life stuff, and among other things, and not everything is simple to do. My kernel source is on Github, feel free to download it and add in whatever you want. Submit a pull request and I'll add it into my tree then. https://github.com/imnuts
would it be correct to assume that once 2.2 comes out, more ROM's and whatnot will come out and developers will start working on this phone some more?

Yes and no. I doubt it will have the number of ROMs available that the Fascinate or most of the HTC phones have, but there will be more stuff going on. It's mostly pointless putting a ton of effort into Eclair stuff now when 2.1 is all but done, and the update is likely less than a month away.
^^^ this
but i think realistic expectations once froyo goes out is a clean/debloated rom with adryns tweaks, voodoo kernels from imnuts
and reboot options, a few themes, aosp lockscreen, remove clock from status bar mods, etc
Will the official update be an OTA update?
Yes, that's how Verizon rolls...
so...
its obvious now that samsung nor verizon have any interest in updating this phone. will people begin developing roms for it? or has everyone in fact returned or sold their phone. cause if so then why this phone listed on xda?
Verizon has not declared end of life on this phone. We will get the Froyo update and likely get Gingerbread as well.
Had my SGSII for about 3 months now. Rooted the 1st week I brought it home. I've been flashing ROMs left and right, trying to find that certain one that best fits my lifestyle.
I've landed on the Darkside, and found my flavor there.
Because of "all this talk" about ICS, and only going (OTA) to unlocked un-rooted phones. I've successfully un-rooted, and went back to stock.
With all the benefits of having a phone rooted (nandroid backup, uninstalling bloatware), i ended up asking myself "WHY". Why do I really need to be rooted. The only time i ever do a nandroid backup is when I flash a new ROM. After much consideration, I ended realizing that the ONLY main reason I want my phone rooted is to re-place the Gmail.apk in the system's folder to a modded Gmail.apk - so I can put my unread count widget on my home screen.
Yeah yeah yeah.. i know there is a apk in the market named "Google Unread Count 2.0", but it doesn't read your unread count email in real-time. It takes a few minutes for the widget to update.
Other, than that there really is no pressing reason to have my phone rooted.
Now for the OTA update waiting game..

There are so many reasons to root it's not even a question of "why".
How about Carrier IQ? Or full control over Theming? Custom Kernels, build.prop, CWM Touch Recovery? You can't be serious about a gmail notification being the sole reason for rooting.
Oh and btw, if you haven't learned this yet, you may want to pay attention:
Once the update starts rolling out to the general public, the official version will be leaked on xda and you will be able to flash through CWM. I'm sure within days there will also be a rooted stock version as well. This will be well BEFORE you get the OTA.
So, if you want to give up control of your device just to wait longer for something that hasn't even officially been announced yet, more power to you. Say hi to Carrier IQ for me

Who said it's even coming to your phone, just because Samsung said it's now being sent OTA does NOT mean you will get it. The fact that you have a carrier branded phone means that Tmobile will get it's hands on it first then do it's wonderful (sarcasm) magic and bloat it with there apps like Tmobile TV and so on. Then IF they choose to make it available they will send it there's NO time frame on that. All I have to do it's point out the Tmobile's version of the Samsung Galaxy S, the Vibrant, which NEVER got Gingerbread like the other Galaxy S phone that did. Samsung announced and released an OTA for the Galaxy S but Tmobile in there infinite wisdom chose NOT to release it to the Vibrant. So just because Samsung announced and is sending a OTA ICS does NOT mean you're going to get it. You will have to WAIT for your carrier IF and when they announce it, PERIOD!
Though it may only he available to stock unrooted users, its often a matter of a few days to get an rooted stock rom up so thats not an issue for me

personally, i like the ability to get into the rooted side of es file explorer to modify the build prop, change lcd density, insert init.d script edit for better battery life. hell, how about undervolting the kernel with oc apps to get upwards of 24 hours out of a single charge? also, while the tmo roms are good, they cant hold a candle to the 2.3.5 roms from ATT...i dont know what it is but those roms run like a dream on this snapdragon soc.
final thought - I love tmo, dont get me wrong, but if you think that tmo will be the first to get ics ota then maybe you know something i dont. considering that, i hypothesize that ics (or even cm9) will be available for flashy goodness long before its ever beamed to our phones.

I was first thinking it was just something for the htc first. But now I'm under the impression that it's going to be a replacement launcher like apex or nova.
I thought it was announced? It's a launcher, but it's more integrated than other launchers as it also replaces the lockscreen and has that overlay. Personally, as a college student who uses facebook for communication and stalking his friends, I'd use it lol.

I might mess with it to see what theyve been up to at FB, but I cant imagine wanting to use this as a regular launcher. Especially if its anything like their native app.
My understanding is just that it is a launcher that is heavily integrated with FB.

agreed i think it has the best ui by far clean simple but very useful but the only reason i dont use it is cuz (no joke) i have like 15 friends on there. i come from a land where apple has taken over and android is known as a "poor" mans iphone. even though my lgog will out preform and icrap
So Facebook home was released today and after reading the requirements our phone should run it just fine. But they would rather supply it to the popular phones. Is there a sure way of getting the official release on our phone through the market? I know there's a way to change the play store to think this is a different device. How do I do that? All I can find are enablers that don't work on most phones this one included
Edit: never mind. That still doesn't work. Edited the build.prop and still no luck. Even the Facebook that supposed to have the "home" settings doesn't have it for my device. And the leak files won't allow me to log in. I'm assuming that has something to do with the device as well..

Official release
Everyone wants to unlock their bootloader so they can run a custom ROM, the supposed purpose being to improve performance and gain new features. But then, once they get the new ROM on there, they keep posting about all the problems they are having, and how this, that or the other doesn't work as well as stock. After goofing with every, and I mean EVERY ROM available for the Razr M, IMHO there's absolutely no reason to use a custom ROM if you are expecting "like stock" performance. It's fun, it's addicting, it can get crazy sometimes, but don't expect it to ever be "Final". More than likely, it will be abandoned the moment a new phone or Android version comes along, and you'll be left with all those unsolved FCs and "almost works" features left hanging. Sad, really.
And then there's the whole "let's take the stock ROM from some other phone entirely and try to make it work on our phone" thing. I totally don't get that. If you like the Necco Choco-Android-o-rama's OS so well, why not just buy that phone instead? I'm just sayin'...
Rooting? That's totally different. I don't know what they do in other countries for bloatware, but Verizon certainly loads up some stinker software here in the US. Tell me, unless you're really into that sort of thing, why would the average shmoe care about Zappos? I certainly don't! And, if I wanted an app for NFL football, I'm perfectly capable of picking one from Google Play, yeah? Same with all the Amazon shtuff. Yeah I get it, advertising helps cover manufacturing costs, and all that jazz. Sure they do it to every new PC from Brand Name X too, but at least you can uninstall it. So rooting is sort of revenge for hogging my limited storage space and then limiting my ability to do anything about it.
And since I'm on this rant anyway, please... PLEASE!!! No more of this "Let's see if we can make our Android look like an iPhone" crap. Or worse, "Windows 8 Phone" crap! - Ewww! That's like taking a Jaguar and trying to make it look like a Ford Pinto... you might manage it, but who the heck would want it?
This rant has been a Public Service Announcement. The thoughts and views expressed herein are not to be considered... period. :silly:
You said it!
I linked to this from my restore where I have a commentary section.
I totally agree. Don't flash ROMs if your going to complain. Its one thing to report to the devs and quite another to ***** about it. And good on ya for the entire rant.

It would be a big event if he & others did it.
I thank them on each post.

I originally rooted and unlocked my bootloader on this phone because of the screen shake issue that a Motorola introduced in an update if that didn't happen I may not of rooted the phone its stock ROM has such a good layout its no wonder so many complain. I however knew what I was getting into. Rule of thumb to new flashers backups are your friend and don't piss off the developers.
I like stock... de-bloat it and its good to go... just wish I could find something to mod the navi bar... remove the recent apps button replace it with the menu button and change color of it...

well, the main reason why folks are not as excited about the new ROMs, is b/c there are not any ground-breaking features on the 4.2.2 or 4.3 operating systems. When I got my first android, I had Froyo. Folks were dying to get to Gingerbread in order to vastly increase performance/battery life.
the deal with Jelly Bean, is that the upgrade from stock 4.1.2 to 4.2.2 or 4.3 is minimal at best - and the changes are mostly aesthetics (although, I read that 4.3 has better bluetooth connectivity). but mostly, 4.2.2/4.3 are primarily geared towards tablets.
the race is on now to see what KitKat can bring to current phone users.
in terms of improvements, just as radorix said, these custom ROMs eliminated the shakes that I was getting on 4.1.2. so for me, while that was not a huge deal, it's enough for me to go custom.
personally, I like the tiles layout of 4.2.2 as well as the AOKP customization, so I'll stick with that for now given that my battery life/performance is stock-like.
*claps* You said it. The Razr M has actually been the first Android phone I owned where I've kept the stock ROM. I think it does fine with 4.1.2 atm, and if I really wanted a change I'd probably just theme it.
The only thing that matters to me is stability and speed. I like a fast phone and I like to o/c, push the phone. I like to test things and try to understand its problems rather than build myself because I don't have the time. If I can find the right medium between speed and stability it becomes my dd, naturally. But stock was built for a reason and every now and then I go back to 4.1.2 because I miss some of the features. Like the far left quick settings menu and Circle Clock. Why have to find a work around to add all these features and fixes to a reimagined custom OS that causes more problems when its already working? We wouldn't have anything to work with if we didn't have the source to start at!
Couldn't agree more. I've had 9 different android devices in the past 4 years. Only ones I haven't rooted are my Sony tablet s (original, don't even get me started with their abandonment of this thing, hey let's leave bugs, make a seemingly unlockable boot loader, not share any code, abandon it after realizing all the bugs exist, then support everything we make after it) and my original nexus 7. I too came back to a stock debloated deodexed ROM for the RAZR M.

Lol. Not the only Sammy device they've dropped. Heard of the Galaxy Player 4.2?
Oh and ezknives, you do realize the menu button is completely redundant right? Considering it pops up if needed and isn't even supported/required for Holo apps

Not for me... with-in various apps it does not... when on different ROMs and I removed the multitasking feature and replaced it with a menu key I was able to utilize features that was other wise inaccessible... like deleting messages in Facebook app for instance... that cannot be done without a menu button or opening your browser and requesting the desktop site... I just need my menu key its never there when I need it...and I don't know what halo apps are nor use it I don't believe...

Holo means apps designed for android 4.0+.
It's the ICS+ ui style. There should be a way to access the menu without a dedicated button - either built-in or by telling the system it's a legacy app that needs the settings button to appear

Meh. I disagree. I've been running CM since it went official and I haven't had any complaints. I experience much-better-than-stock performance and battery life, plus it is way more customizable. I love it!

I just tried it again. Froze on reboot, wouldn't let me into recovery, same BS as all the 4.3 versions. And I wrote the book, well thread, on how to install it, so yeah I wiped etc.

i'm enjoying better than stock performance on the stable 4.2.2 branch, and i built a custom kernel for CM10.1 for better performance. I tried the 'stock' life and its boring lol. The custom ROM features and better performance are what makes it worth it in my view. 4.3 will be even better as work is continually being done on it, and it hasn't been out that long. Also, I think we need to give appreciation to the devs for giving us options as far as what we can run on this phone compared to being stuck with only one choice.
CM is getting good. Recently the "display freezing" issue got fixed, also more fixes for cardock audio and wifi. It simply takes a while to get it all done properly (with that what's left is SIM I/O and HDR (works with Moto X camera application)).
@netizenmt: Booting to recovery is not affected by the ROM you have installed, so you screwed up the installation at some point.

Would you offer a build for a Bluetooth phone user that has the SD swap working?
One that might quiet this thread?

There are a few tricks to getting 4.3 installed and running but it will never happen if u just quite and go back to stock before u get it up and running correctly. I had a terrible time getting 4.3 to boot, keyboard forcing close, stability etc but I figured all that out and wouldn't think of going back to stock. The amount and way if partions the internal drive alone will keep me from ever going back to stock.

You actually just made my whole point.
While it's cool you had time, patience, skill and effort to resolve your issues with 4.3, that's not the point of this thread. So do I. The point is, if you think you're going to slap one of these ROMs on and everything is going to work like stock, forget it. If that's what someone expects, they should stick to stock.

Questions go under questions. Theres yet to be a specific ROM thread up where that would apply.
they have cm booting on the tmobile one, the majority of that code would work fine for the sprint one. chances are they will be unified builds. if this was teh s5 or anything id work towards fleshing out the device tree and bringing it up, but i am truly happy with my note 4 stock with xposed. i dont use all the fancy samsung features but i do use enough of them to not even really want to bother flashing aosp and losing out on it. granted this is my first note device but i cant see or imagine why anyone would want to use something other than stock, battery is amazing, features are top notch and its very fast and fluid.
I came from a nexus 5 but i sold that and for a week i used a kyocera echo until my note 4 preorder was ready to pick up, it truly is amazing in how much progress has been made in such a short time.
I agree with Shabbypenguin.
I'd rather have a stock ROM with all the cool Samsung functionality of floating windows, one handed moded, functional heart rate sensor, S-Pen apps, and camera app all work great.
Instead we need a rom with stock as base, and AOSP apps like I describe in my thread:
My "Dream ROM" for the Note 4 would be:
*Rooted
*Knox removed
*CyanogenMod style theming
*Samsung and Sprint bloatware removed (accept for Facebook sync)
*TouchWiz apps (calendar, messaging, phone, clock, calculator, lockscreen, notification quick settings) replaced with CyanogenMod versions

i swore i replied to you in there but i guess i didnt :/. the cm theme manager isnt possible on stock, its embedded in so many core files to be able to alter everything on the fly its not possible without recompiling with the code added in, and we cant recompile touchwiz.

My main gripe is the typing lag,
in some apps. I notice the typing lag mainly on TouchWiz roms and in Google hangouts and a few other apps. I've tried different keyboards and they all lag on TouchWiz. If I use Aosp, no lag at all anywhere.
Yes the features of the Note 4 are great but I don't use and can live without most of them. I really wanted this device for its spen. I'd take the overall smoothness of cm11 and it's lean build over the features in touch wiz. Hopefully we get a cm build going.
Cm12? Mmmmm
I was just reading about CM12.
I'm strongly thinking of moving over.
I can mimic floating windows with xhalo xposed. It has resizable windows that work similar to TouchWiz floating windows.
I'm not sure how I'd mimic one handed mode
Or the stock camera app which has dual facing camera modes.
Any ideas?
Read on land of droid the cm12 roadmap

Have we reached a point where all of the stuff you mentioned is no longer going to be able to be incorporated into AOSP? I came to the note 4 from the note 2, and I agree touchwiz is pretty nicely refined, but I would like to see AOSP. From some post's I've read hear and there, it appears that touchwiz just gets more complex. What about the Nexus 6 OS?
