What to do with an old ZL? - Sony Xperia ZL

I have an Xperia ZL that was reported as stolen by someone (who I don't know, but I bought it from a store and have receipts). Rogers refuses to un-blacklist the IMEI from their system, even though I've sent them scanned copies of the receipts to the now out of business store in Toronto. It's pointless now because I bought a Z1 from the Sony store a few weeks ago.
I now have a ZL, it is factory carrier-unlocked, that is on the latest software (4.3). It has a carrier locked bootloader and isn't rooted. What can I do with this device?
Some notes:
I have WiFi and Bluetooth, however it wont connect to any Canadian network. I have tried with Bell, Rogers and Telus.
Since there's no cellular connectivity, it's useless as a reliable GPS. I also have an in-dash GPS with a 12" screen
I drive a 2 seater and don't have kids, so it's useless to be a mini-tablet device, or in-car media player.
I have no qualms with trying to unlock the BL if possible, rooting, or flashing stuff, so long as there's decent documentation on it.
Post your thoughts and cool things to do!

Donate to some developer who could be convinced to code for the ZL? (no idea... sorry that it was locked and isn't usable to you...)
Could use it as a 5" tablet... but you have a better device in your other phone... no clue.

Use the phone as a toys ( flashing many roms ) or as an experimental objects

sorry man that sucks
you can use is as a chromecast reciever, but that is a little power over kill to repace a $35 chromecast
either that or donate it to DoomLord as he is a big help in the Sony community but I don't think he has a ZL

Maybe you can find a solution.

I asked Doom if he wanted the phone, he said no thanks as he was too busy with school/other projects.

What was the store ? Probably was stolen from a shipping warehouse, happens a lot. Call Sony and see what they can do for you... If its locked in Canada, its should work in the USA....

I'd be tempted to try and dev... but not with my primary driver... hmmm....
Is the boot loader unlockable?

If you could find a way to generate a generic IMEI it should work again. I did something similar with my Samsung Captivate Glide to unlock it. It was somewhere in /efs/, but Sony uses a different storage scheme for such important files so I'm not sure where you could find it. You should obviously back it up though if you do find it.

Maybe you can send the phone to FXP team or OMNI team, so they have a phone for bug testing, :good:

Gotta loooove Rogers!! I'm surprised it doesn't work with another carrier?? So its obvious than that these companies share information. I think this says it all...

sorry for such a newbie question, but if the bootloader is locked, how this guy here can sell the AT&T version and unlock it?

He is probably relying on a service that will get the unlock code but I'm not aware of any that have unlock codes for the ion. Its exclusive to AT&T so I seriously doubt you can get it unlocked for at least a few months. You can't even buy one unlocked in the US for full price.

Yeah, more than likely it'll be pretty much a repeat of the x10a only (since a lot of the ground work done) quicker process. We'll all end up w sum variant of the stock sony rom(or any but att) w custom recovery. I was never able to do much of anything w the stock usa roms, come to think of it not even sure att saw GB, don't think so. eb

But my question is, how long before someone does? The bootloader being locked just bums me out. I really want this phone. And the price is making it really possible for me, but I almost feel like I should just wait even longer for something else, or pay the $200 for a GS III.
I really need to get my hands on the Ion. Has anyone gone into a BB or ATT store to get theirs and seen a demo unit?
I have ... the phone looks and feels great. i've read a few reports of signal issues. i think i'm going to wait a few weeks and get two one for me and one for my girl mid july for the price... and ics coming soon... it's a dopeass phone for sure. i loved the way it felt in my hand the screen is gorgeous. the camera was super fast too... idk it was nice.

This was the answer from the ebay seller:
" I can unlock the phone for $30 extra. It is a factory unlock and not through special ROMS which allows you to keep all stock Sony firmware. It is a permanent factory unlock."
I´m not from the US and I´m looking to buy either a Xperia S or Xperia Ion. As the Ion is newer, would like to go for it. I will be in the US by mid july but still looking to find for a good price for a non-contract and unlocked, but it seems that Ion will be higher anyway. If the unlocking would be a easy thing, I would by the no contract phone at Sony store for example, but it seems I will have to go for the Xperia S
I would be leary of anyone who promises they can unlock the BL at this point. Unfortunately there's absolutely no way of knowing for sure if and when this will happen for the att "unlock not allowed model". eb

From that eBay quote, sounds like he must be selling the international version of the ion(lt28i) not the AT&T ion(lt28at). That's the only way I can think of for the unlocked with Sony factory firmware settings.

I could mess around to find a way but im too busy and im not that professional to find it right away.. But if u listen to me, its the best phone. I worked with sgs3 and ion. ... And i say definitely ion.... Yes sgs3 has ics and lots and lots but i just love ui of ion and its design plus that no samsung phone has ever worked for me for more than 6 months but any sony or sonyericsson worked for me for years i still have the sony z7 and it works super

Google GSM can unlock phone to use on t-mobile $29.99
This guy is advertising that he can unlock the phone for $25

The only thing is when you go to purchase it locked to Canada and Rogers so I can not sure about it.
The ion will be one hell of a device if we can just get passed the issue of unlocking for ATT :/ really wish i had an international one just so i can play with it. i really hate the bloat ware they are shipped with. all in all preformance and hardware wise i see the ion staying alive for a few years. longer than what the x10 did in my opinion.

Xperia ZL firmwares

I need that somebody write here about the firmares for the Xperia ZL. I bought one C6502 from Ebay used and the seller sold it as fully functional, however when i received it i flashed the only one Lollipop firmware for C6502 and what a surprise i can't make calls because the earspeaker doesn't work. Searching on Google it seems a very usual problem with the Xperia Z series. So i proceed to open a case for return it and receive my money because it is broken and the seller didn' listed it as is or for parts or repairing. Now the seller claims to be a technician for more than 15 years, says that i flashed the wrong firmware? and according to him there "a lot of firmwares" for this model and this is funny also there is one for "Sprint" i haven't seen any Xperia ZL on Sprint. He only wants to give me 6 bucks and the phone was on 69.95. Also he sayas that i have flashed the wrong one? and that cause that the earspeaker doesn't work. Also the phone was listed as unknown carrier so it means that it was locked and when i got it, it had a Sprint micro sim card inserted in it?¿, so he couldn't make a call if he didn't know who carrier has locked the phone,
I am not a noob neither a high tech guy but i have flashed a lot of phones and unlocked a lot of them like the HTC One M7 Sprint and the Lg G2 that were a bit tricky and they worked very well,
And here are some lines of the case that i have and his experience of 15 years:
he phone is fully functional 100% ,and it has been tested before we shipped it to you ,you just flashed the phone with the wrong firmware trying to unlocked which cased the problem, sorry ,this is not my mistake.
there are multiple firmwares for that phone ,there is a firmware for sprint ,T-mobile,ect! ,therefore you can not just flash with any firmware that you find on internet, it must be the same exact firmware ,the board id is different from carrier to another, any attempt on flashing or rooting the warranty will be void, again it is not fault and i will be not responsible for you mistake ,sorry
you flashed the phone trying to root it ,which caused the problem ,we are not responsible for your mistake ,the phone was fully functional before we shipped it to you ,since you used the wrong flash file trying to root the phone ,the warranty is voided
So can you guys give me a hand with this information about the c6502 firmware? i have this one:
Build number: 10.6.A.0.454
Android version: 5.0.2
Country: US
I haven't rooted it. And i like the phone everything works but can't make calls and is not fair that i have to use spaker or hands free for calls and less when someone thinks that he has a that "experience of many years"

Sorry, I don't know enough about this model (I have 6506), so I can't comment on right or wrong firmware. However, just a thought re: your case with the seller. Did you use the phone before flashing it, and did you have the problem at that time? If I were the seller, I wouldn't have taken any responsibility for whatever happened after you flashed ANY firmware on your phone, right or wrong. Regardless of his claimed experience, true or not, he is responsible for the phone as it was shipped and delivered to you. If you can't confirm that the problem existed before flashing, you don't have a case, sorry...

To be honest no, it came with jelly bean but as it was locked i couldn't use any sim card, also here is fraudulent if i call 911 "just for test a phone". But my point is wheter or not the phone was working he shouln't sold this phone as used an working 100%, because if he knows that the phone had was unknown carrier or locked it should have been as is or for parts or non working, he couldn't make a call. I mean other phones that i have bought from ebay were listed for example bad esn, for parts on non working and i am aware what does mean all those terms of selling. And he is with the idea that unlocking or rooting the phone did the damage, something very stupid. I haven't let the phone fell or something like that may be cause an hardware damage and the earspeaker stopped working
i just remember an issue similar to this...
Try to connect earphones to phone paly something...
then retry to make call and listen with earphones.
SOunds irrelative but i remember something similar to this ( a user flashed lollipop & one day he cannot hear via earpiece and his loudspeaker was not working, too. He tried to plug earphones ,played a song & it worked.)
Try this .see if it helps.

If you mean you wish to unlock the device so it can be used on any network and carrier rather than it be just locked down to one, you are going to need something called a PAC code from the network the device was originally on they are usually free nowadays though some may still charge for the privilege depends where in the world you are. They can also be purchased online from places like eBay and Amazon for a few pounds though I've never tried that way as I've always phoned the network for the code if I've needed one.

Unlocking Question

I bought a tmobile z2 Force Locked to Tmobile. I am having trouble getting it unlocked. Tmobile even goes as far as to tell me the IMEI doesn't show up in their database. Is there a way for me to unlock it myself through some kind of software mod? I have been out of the android root scene since I got rid of my Nexus 6 a couple years ago. Any help would be appreciated.
T-Mobile uses a server based unlock system and can only be unlocked via the device unlock app.
If you did not buy the device directly from them, the phone is not whitelisted with the unlock server. You'll need to keep contacting support until you reach a rep that is familiar with that aspect of their systems.

If I were to root the device and apply a custom ROM would the unlock app restriction still apply? And if I have no luck with Tmobile directly how reliable are online unlocking services? Most want $60 or so to unlock a device with the app installed like mine has.
Rooting will not unlock because this is server based. Using a third party would work if the phone was in the database, but third-parties do not have the ability to add your imei to the database to allow for an unlock. Only T-Mobile can do that, and as I said you'll need to keep contacting support until you find a rep that knows how it works.

Alright thanks again for the input. As I said I have been away from the root and modding scene for a while and not sure what is capable of being modified on phones anymore. This app for instance is a new thing to me.
Sure thing. They have their unlock system, umm, locked down pretty good. Most of the unlock companies will tell you their service will only work if the device is recognized by the app, beware of any that say they can work around that restriction.
yeah this kinda **** is why I usually buy unlocked devices but I found a deal on the Z2 Force for $350 on amazon. I should have done some research before i bought it though. My wife needed an upgrade from her gen2 Moto x in a bad way though. guess I got a fight with tmobile ahead of me.

The z2 force is only $375 from T-Mobile, and if bought out right they do unlock it (if you follow their rules for unlocking). The Amazon one might not be on TMobiles unlock servers for a reason (?)
Sent from my Moto Z (2) using XDA Labs
Yeah I know the one @ tmobile is 375 but none of them near me have it in stock. There is no reason the one I have can't be used. I just have to fight to get it on their servers whitelist I guess. I have confirmed it works by using a sim card from a friend since I started this thread. maybe now that it was used on their servers even briefly the IMEI is in their system and I will have a little more luck tomorrow.

Found a reliable network unlock service

Okay, for those who have lost hope unlocking this phone, i have found a reliable and fast service on ebay.
After numerous attempts to call t-mobile (I'm from Philippines btw) they weren't able to help me as i don't have an account with them. Costumer service are from PH too fyi.
I also searched this forum and truat me there is no other way than to pay for unlocking, but where? Some say cellunloker can do the job, but for how much? I've seen it and it's like 40-50$. Oh boy! It's almost the price of a used g5.
So i searched ebay to look for cheap unlocking services. I first tried the software from a seller name TMBKILLER, but it didn't work. Glad i got my refund immediately, like 4 days. It was for 20$ usd or 1200php
Then i found this seller, quickpro-unlocks, who sells it for also 20$. But this is cheaper because its canadian dollar. In php it just translated to 800php only. So like TMBkiller, your phone must be rooted on stock android 7.0. The difference with quickpro vs tmb is that quickpro will do the unlocking via remote access.
The process just took us under 30 mins, it was fast. Also this guys are nice and trustworthy. I was happy with their service. It's a hassle free procedure and worth the money.
So this is it guys. This is the only way aside from the official one. Thia process is especially for those who are not in the US like me.
I'm not associated with them. I'm just sharing an answer to a problem. Hope this will help you guys.
Remember that they can only unlock your phone if you are rooted on a stock android 7.0 for LG. And yes, it's a permanent unlock. I'm now running fulmics rom
Btw check the image and just search them on ebay. They are 100% legit!
I unlocked my LG G5 h830 today using the service OP provided and it works. Thank you sir.

They don't show for LG phones. Send them a PM and ask if it still available. They do unlock G5
I built my H830 from parts (case, motherboard, chin modile, screen, digitizer, etc.). The motherboard was supposedly unlocked according to the seller, and sure enough it was when I first started it up. As soon as I removed the bootblock lock however it reverted to network-locked. I used TMBKILLER and it worked like a charm.

It may be. I am not sure for Samsung phones but it worked like a charm for me on my LG T-Mobile phone which was sim-locked (don't confuse this with boot-locked - it is totally different). so I would call it legit. YMMV depending who it is you are dealing with. As I built the phone from various LG G5 parts T-Mobile would not even talk to me. But for me TMBKILLER worked like a charm.

Yea I know the dif on boot-loader and sim
I ended up going through tmobile despite not being a customer on their face book page and they had my imei white-listed for unlock on their server
I was station the tmb killer program is almost identical to a Samsung program i use
I have a h830 I am tired of Sammy and their games got this one out of luck as t mobile has no service stores or anything within like 100 miles of me So just finding a H830 in my area and me landing it is luck
I contacted the guy from this method for sim unlock and he seems legit hope to do loads of business with him in the future
